Abstract
494,218. Dividing by fusion. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. Feb. 24, 1938, No. 5836. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] For metal cutting a fuel gas jet L<1> and an oxidizing gas jet L <11> are directed against successive portions of a metal body B sufficiently close to one another to form a diffusion flame and an oxidizing gas jet J is directed against the heated metal. The jets L<1>, L" preferably have a velocity of from 35 to 175 feet per second and the jet J has a velocity of from 600 to 1800 feet per second when completely severing metal and from 200 to 1000 feet per second when removing metal from a metalsurface. When cutting at high speeds or on rough surfaces, a small amount of the oxidizing gas may be mixed with the fuel gas before discharge from the burner nozzle. The burner nozzle shown in the Figure comprises inner intermediate and outer members 14, 16 enclosing passages C, I, O for the jets J, L<11>, L<1> respectively. The outlets for the jets L<1>, L<11> may be annular or be formed by rings of spaced orifices. The lower portions of the passages L, O may be inclined to the passage C.
