Abstract

493,772. Cutting metal by fusion; blowpipe burners. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. April 13, 1937, No. 10455. Convention date, April 30, 1936. Addition to 448,432. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] The method of cutting metal according to the parent Specification, in which supplementary heat is applied to one surface of the body being cut, is modified in that supplementary heat is applied to more than one surface of the body being cut. A single cutting blowpipe B which may have a central cutting gas passage surrounded by a number of fuel gas passages in the usual manner, is not necessarily water cooled. The work M in the form of a thick sheet is moved relatively to the cutter along .rollers 19. Preliminary heat is supplied to the work by heating tips 13 (five are provided in the example given) which project from a water-jacketed body 12, a part 14 of which projects downwards between the cutting blowpipe and the heating tips to protect the former. The oppositely disposed preliminary heating device 16 is similar to that just described, the water-cooled shield 18 in this case preventing the flame from the heating tips 17 entering the lower part of the cut and thus interfering with the cutting flame from the nozzle 15. Supplementary heat may also be supplied to the work subsequent to the cutting operation by one or more pairs of post-heating leads 20, 21. A shield 30 is used to protect the rollers 19 in the latter arrangement. The application of the invention to the cutting of a flange on aT-section beam is described.
