Abstract

258,808. Marks, E. C. R., (Kobe, Inc.). April 24, 1926. Blowpipe burners.-Slots of trapezoidal section are cut in sheet metal by means of a torch comprising a head 31 and a tip 36 secured together by a nut 37. The head 31 is formed with a central cavity 32 and an annular 34, the cavity 32 being fed with oxygen or an oxidizing gas and the cavity 34 being fed with a combustible mixture of gases such as oxygen and hydrogen. The tip 36 is formed with passages 38 communicating with the cavity 32 and passages 40 communicating with the cavity 34. The gas mixture issuing from the passages 40 forms a flame for heating the sheet metal 15 to incandescence while the oxygen issuing from the passage 38 cuts a slot 21 in the metal as the torch is moved in relation to it. The passages 38 are inclined relatively to the tip axis so that the issuing oxygen jets cross one another and spread after leaving the tip. The slots cut are consequently widest where the jets emerge from the metal. The torch is of special utility in cutting slots in steel pipes or casing forming the. lining of oil wells.
