Abstract

1,152,492. Latches. ROSS-BURNET, Inc. 3 May, 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 19394/66. Heading E2A. A latch mechanism comprises a plunger 38 movable through a mounting plate 15 to actuate a sliding latch bolt 13 by means of a lever 43 having a pivot 44 spaced from the plunger and bolt and perpendicular to the common plane thereof, a touch plate 16 in alignment with the plunger, relatively movable connecting means 17 between the plates including a T-shaped pivot lever 24 secured through its shank to one of the plates, means forming a chamber recessed to receive the cross-head of the T-shaped pivot lever secured to the other plates, resilient means 41 biassing the plunger into contact with the touch plate so that rocking and linear movements of the touch plate 16 cause linear movement of the plunger, the mounting plate being rectangular, with the plunger passing through the centre thereof and the mounting plate detachably supporting a cover 57 enveloping the mounting plate and a portion of the connecting means including interengaged portions of the means forming the chamber and pivot lever. As shown, in which a touch plate, mounting plate and plunger assembly is provided at each side of a door, each mounting plate is provided with four apertures 22 for permitting the plates to be fitted in common alignment or at right angles to each other. The plunger 38 bears at its inner end on lever 43. A locking plate 61 is slidable, in a channel in the base of the pivot lever, from a position in which movement of the plunger is blocked when the narrow end 63 of a key hole slot is engaged with a reduced section 64 of the plunger, to a position which passes the full diameter of the plunger through the wider end of the slot. The plate 61 is operated through a forked lever 66 and a rod 69 from the opposite side of the door by a key member 70 which may be integrally attached to, or releasably engaged with the rod 69. Each mounting plate is provided with grooves 71, 71<SP>1</SP> aligned with the apertures 22 to permit orientation of the key 70 in any of four radial positions irrespective of the relative positions of the mounting plates.
