A door latch operating handle assembly comprises a handle 7, a shaft 5 fast with the handle and capable of operative connection to a second handle 7a through an intermediate mortise latch 27, a housing 9 in which the shaft is mounted so as to be capable of both rotary movement for operating the latch and for longitudinal movement so as to be displaceable out of connection with the second handle, a spring 20 mounted in the housing to bias the shaft towards the position of engagement with the second handle and means for locating the shaft in its alternative longitudinal positions. In the construction shown the locating means comprises a V-shaped projection 18 at the end of the handle 7 which is engageable with either of a pair of V section recesses 16 and 17 formed in a bush 8 journalled in the housing 9, the groove 16 being of greater depth than the groove 17. Both of the handles 7 and 7a have bores of square cross-section and the shaft 5 has portions 23 and 24 of square cross-section in the vicinity of its two ends and another square section portion 25 intermediate the ends, the remainder of the shaft, except for a tapering end portion. being of circular section smaller in diameter than the width of the square section. The portion 23 is engageable with the bore 22 of the handle 7a in the position of the shaft defined by the engagement of the projection 18 with the recess 16 and is out of engagement with the bore 22 when the projection 18 is in the recess 17. Similarly the portion 25 of the shaft is engaged with a square section bore in a follower 26 of the latch when the portion. 23 is in engagement with the bore of the handle 7a and disengaged from the follower in the other position of the shaft. Both of the handles are provided with centering springs 15 (not shown) and 15a and plates 11, 11a which co-operate with the housing 9 and 9a to limit the rotary movement of the handle. The spring 20 is disposed within the housing 9 between the plate 11 and a detachable crosspin 21 located in a transverse aperture through the shaft, alternative apertures being provided for the pin to suit the length of the shaft after the square section end portion 24 has been cut to suit the door thickness.
