Description

M. FARCH. LOCK MECHANISM. APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1908. Q@ Y Patented sept. 2s, 1909.
v 4114i O MOGENS FARGH, OF EROGCLYX, NEW YQRK.
LOCK MECHANSM.
Speceation of Letters Patent.
Peuteiited Sept. 289 i909.
Application led 'May 29, 1963. Serial No. @235,64
To all whom it may concer Bc it known that Moennig ihnen, ot Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ot New York, have invented u certain neuv and ueerul Improvement in Lock lllechanism, and do hereby declare that the followinf; is a full and enact description thereof.
My invention relates to un improvement in locke, and especially in locks which are adapter for use on do rs.
lily lock is so eonwructed that the single locking bolt therein adapted to act both as 'a latch for keeping trie door temporarily closed and as a permanent lock for securing the door closed tor any -length of time de- Hired.
it also consists in a very convenient errungement of latch releasing mechanism whereby the dol i handle is provided With a plunger which cooperates with the latch by the more pressure oi the thumb to retract the saine when it is desired to open the door.
lu the accompanyin1 drawings Figure 1 shows a horizontal section of e door equipped with my loch; .and Fig. 2, a vertical 'section of the saine.
In the drawings 1 is o. door provided with a lock cursingv Q ot' the usuel type, having an end plato 3 for giving the lock casing a tinished appearance on the edge of the door. The end plate El ie provided with an aperture through which the latch bolt el is adapted to pass. This has at its end projecting through the end plate l -a beveled or curved surface 5, so that when the bolt d is beiner used as a latch, the door Will be automatica l-y secured in place when'closed, as is usuel u ith latches in general. rlhe rear end of the bolt 4. is .formed into a yoke against tl e front end G of which a spring' T is designed to coperatc, the rear vend of the Springl 7 abutting against a stationary support 8 secured within the lock easing 2. The rear side ot the stationary support 8 is beveled so as to produce two beveled surfaces 9. Similar, though oppoeitely directed beveled surfaces 10 are located at the rear end ot the yoke 5. ln the operative position of the bolt l as shown in Fig. 1, the Said beveled surfaces 9 and 10 form tivo pockets, one on either side oi the lock casing, und cooperating therewith there are two balls 11, one for either pocket located on either eide of the lock bolt. 'lhe latter are designed to be pushed inwardly when it is desired to release the latch 5 by means of thel plungers 12 located within the door knobs 13 and extending-through the ends thereof et the points 1l.
ln l l have shown the knob and plunger l cated on one side only ot the door, but is to be understood that the door lrnob und plunger on the other side are constructed in exactly the saine manner. lt will also be seen,7 however, that my invention will Work equally Well, if such a construction be found desirable, by placingY a door knob and plunger on one side of the door only. ln order to use the bolt eluot only as o latch but also asa loelrj l provide one side et the yoke with an aperture 15 which is of the proper size and so located as 'to receive the end of a slide bolt 16 held in position by the guides 17. l actuate the bolt 16 by means ot a lever 18 having eslot 19 in its end which cooperates with e pin 20 located upon the bolt i6. ne lever 1.8 is pivoted to the lock cesing :it the point 201. The lever 18 could be operated in any desired manner. l have shown it, however, as oprated by means of a small handle or thumb piece 21 projecting through the outer surface of the door. lt is to be understood that instead of the thumb piece 21, i might substitute any'ordinary #forni oi lock mechanism.
ln the operation of the device, ordinarily the bolt e will be used merely as a' latch', in which ease upon the closingv oin the door the beveled or curved edge 5 thereof Will cooperate with the door casing so as to cause the latch to be pushed baeliwardly into the lock casing 2 until the door has become com pletely closed, whereupon the Spring` 7 pushes the bolt et forwardly so as to secure the door in its closed position. Willen now it is Adesired to open the door, one of the han d les 13 is grasped und the plunger 14 located therein depressed. This causes the ball 11 cooperating with the plunger 12, which has been depressed, to push against the beveled surface 10 located at the rear end of the yoke 5 against the force of the spring' 7 until the end ot' the bolt l is entirely Withdrawn into the lock casing1 Which results in the release of the door and allowing it to be opened.
When 1t is found desirable to utilize the` bolt e es a permanent lock ltor a door foi" any desired period of time, the thumb piece 21 or its equivalent locking mechanlsm 1s Operated to move the lever 18 so as to intro` duce the end of the bolt 1G into the aperture 15 in the side of the yoke 5. When this hustaken place, 1t will be seen that the plunger and ball mechanism for retracting the bolt 4 cannot be operated so as to retract the bolt, and when it is desired to open the door it is firstnecessary to move the lever l8 so as to Withdraw the bolt 16 from the aperture l5 in the side of the yoke 5. The removal of the bolt 16 from the aperture then permits the bolt. l to be Withdrawn in the usual' manner by the plunger 12 and ball 11 cooperating therewith.
While I have described my invention above in detail, I do not Wish it to be anders stood that I am necessarily limited thereby, but considerthat my invention is a broad one and capable of'many iiiodilications and applications to different structures, without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim isl. In a device of the character described, the combination ot' a spriiig-actiuited latch and a ball mechanism for retraction' the saine, the ball of said mechanism being adapted to Withdraw the catch by pushing .against it at right angles thereto.
2. In a device of the character describeiil, the combination ot a spring-actuated latch, and a plunger and ball mechanism for retractiiig the saine, the ball portion of said mechanism being constructed to move said latch by pushing against the saine at right angles thereto. f
3. In a device of the character described,
' the combination of a spring-actuated latch having a beveled yoke, a plunger and ball mechanism for retracting tlie'saine coperatingwith the beveled surface of the yoke.
4. lli a device of the character described,
the combination of a spring-actuated latch having a yoke, the rear end oit vthich is beveled, a spring cooperating Witl-g' the front portion thereof, and a plunger and ball mechanism for retracting the same coperating with the beveled rear end of the yoke.
5. In `a device of the character described, the combination of a spring-actuated latch having a beveled yoke, a plunger and ball mechanism for retracting the same cooper` ating With the beveled surface of the yoke,
and a locking mechanism for preventing -a plunger for rctracting' the same a ball Working,r at 'one side against the latch and at the other against the Jplunger to convey niotioii from the plunger to the latch and a lever and bolt locking' mechanism adapted to cooperate with aii aperture 1n the side of the latch for preventing,f the movement ol" the latch when desired.
l'n testiii'ioiiy that I claiiii the foregoiimr l have hereunto set my hand.
