1,068,078. Hydraulic reciprocating pumps and motors. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT Ltd. Oct. 7, 1965 [Oct. 12, 1964], No. 41629/64. Heading F1A. An axial or radial piston pump or motor with a rotating or fixed cylinder block has each piston 17, 18 engaging a swash plate or cam track through a metal sphere 21, 23 located in a cup formed on the end of the piston, the diameter of the sphere being greater than the displacement diameter of the piston. The sphere and cup assembly alternatively may be mounted on a cylinder which reciprocates on a fixed piston, Fig. 6 (not shown). The piston may be hollow, as shown, so that the sphere is subjected to the working hydraulic pressure. Alternatively, the piston may be solid with passages for conducting working hydraulic pressure to the sphere, Fig. 5 (not shown), and the cup may not extend as far as the equatorial plane of the sphere, so that it is located hydraulically during operation, fingers extending from the cup to prevent accidental dislodgement of the sphere. A ridge may be provided in the cup to limit inward movement of the sphere, and the cup may extend around the sphere to a diameter either greater or less than the displacement diameter of the piston, so that the sphere is either biased outwardly or maintained centralized in the cup. The sphere may run in a groove formed in the swash plate or cam track.
