Abstract

1,201,030. Hydraulic reciprocating motors and pumps. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT Ltd. Nov.27, 1967 [Dec.1, 1966], No.53751/66. Heading F1A. A hydraulic pump or motor has a rotary cylinder block 14, Fig. 1, with the cylinders therein disposed parallel or inclined to the rotational axis, a swash-plate or plates 9, 10 engaging pistons 17, 16 either directly or through slippers 22, 19 or through a bearing, and rotary bearing means 25, 28 for resisting axial and radial thrusts. The cylinder block, swash-plate and pistons are retained in a tubular casing 1 by a key 13 which abuts the swash-plate 9 and exerts an axial pre-load on the rotary bearing means. The motor or pump is assembled by first assembling the cylinder block, the swash-plate 9 and associated pistons 17 and slippers 22 together, and then fitting the bearing means 28 by a special tool (43), Fig. 3 (not shown). The pistons 16 are then inserted into the cylinders against the action of compression springs 18 by a special tool (47), Fig.4 (not shown), and are retained therein by temporarilyfitted abutment tabs (49). Next, the swash-plate 10 and bearing means 25 are assembled to the other assembled parts to form a sub-assembly, the parts being clamped together by removable clamping means (43,46), Fig. 5 (not shown). Then the sub-assembly is inserted into the casing 1, whereafter the key 13 and swash-plate securing bolts 6 are fitted. Next, the motor or pump is lifted via its drive shaft 26 to cause the cylinder block to move relatively to the casing by an amount permitted by the end float of the bearing means 25, 28 and this end float is measured, and a shim 42 of a thickness slightly greater (e. g. by 0.003 inches) than the measured end float is fitted by a special tool (43, 58, ) Fig. 6 (not shown), to take up the end float and to apply the axial pre-load to the bearing means, which pre-load is reacted through the swash-plate 9 and key 13 to the casing 1. Finally, a dowel pin 12 is fitted to prevent the swash-plate 9 from rotating. The key 13 comprises three or more arcuate parts so arranged that there are no gaps formed between them after they have been radially located into groove 5. Liquid is delivered to and from the cylinders via a valve plate 29 engaging a valve surface 31 of the cylinder block. 1,201,032.Pumping apparatus includingcentrifugal and reciprocating pumps. W. C . HILL, July 21, 1967 [June 23, 1966], No. 28039/66. Headings F1A, F1C and F1P. [Also in Division G1] An apparatus for supplying liquid under pressure, especially for pressure testing vessels, comprises a low-pressure conduit 28 connected to the mains or to the outlet of a low-pressure high displacement centrifugal pump 10, and a high-pressure conduit 32 pressurized by a high-pressure low displacement swash-plate pump 14, the conduits 28, 32 being connected to a common discharge conduit 38 having a non-return valve 30 whereby a vessel to be tested connected to the conduit 38 by a coupling 40 is rapidly filled with liquid from both pumps until pressure builds up to close the non- return valve 30 and thus cut off the low-pressure supply. A non-return valve 34 is provided in the high-pressure conduit 32 to prevent return flow through the pump 14. Both pumps are driven by a common petrol or diesel engine or by an air or electric motor 8 mounted on a mobile base-plate 2 which also carries a reservoir (6) Fig. 2 (not shown) having a pipe 22 connected to the suction pipes 18, 20 of the pumps. If the capacity of the vessel is greater than the reservoir, liquid from the mains supply can be connected to the reservoir through a coupling 54. The maximum pressure supplied to the test vessel is determined by the setting a pressure gauge 48 adapted to actuate a relay 50 to stop the driving motor 8. Pressure is released from the vessel by opening an adjustable pressure relief valve 44 having a return line 76 connected to the reservoirs. To empty the vessel the connection from the vessel to the coupling 40 is transferred to a coupling 55 connected to the suction pipes 18, 20. A vacuum pump 64 is provided for evacuating the vessel prior to pressure testing. It is stated that the apparatus may be used to drive an hydraulic ram.
