Abstract

580,544. Rotating cylinder pumps. HILLS, W. D., and CROUCHER, A. H. Dec. 14, 1943, No. 20248. [Class 102 (i)] ] In a rotating cylinder pump the cylinder bores 2 are inclined to the axis of rotation and the pistons 3 engage a conical swerve ring 4 which is suspended at 24 within the pump casing so that it can be rocked in a plane normal to the axis of rotation. The pistons 3 may be constructed as described in Specification 580,543, [Group XXVI], and their outward movement under centrifugal force may be assisted by springs. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder bores 2 terminate in radial passages 10 of rectangular section with rounded corners, these passages being sealed on the outside by a ring 12, and on the inside they communicate with arcuate high and low pressure ports 13, 14. Liquid enters a passage 7a, circulates around the pump body 1 to cool it, and passes through short spiral passages and an inlet passage 7 to the ports 14. The ports 13 lead to an outlet passage 8 fitted with. a spring-controlled relief valve 17 which permits discharge into the pump casing 11. Noise due to resonance effects built up on the swerve ring 4 by the pistons' 3 may be reduced by providing a rubber ring bonded to inner and outer conical members forming 'the bearing track of the ring. The swerve ring 4 has a hollow cylindrical extension 34 carried by a holder 37 which is pivoted on the pin 24 and which has a tongue 41 slidable between guide plates 42, 43. The resultant of the piston thrusts on the swerve ring assembly passes through, or close to, the suspension bearing 32, and the component of this resultant thrust which is normal to the axis of rotation tends to move the swerve ring to its central position against the action of a leaf spring 33, Fig. 12. The outer spring leaf 46 is secured at one end only and is engaged by a screw 47 which can adjust the stalling pressure of the pump. Opposite the spring 33 a pad 49 on the holder 37 is engaged by a cylindrical cam 48 which is rotatable by a handle 50 to limit the liquid flow from maximum to zero. Air is removed from the casing by means of a bleed screw 58. The outlet passage 8 may be connected by an external pipe to the back of a cylinder 62 containing a spring-pressed piston 63 similar to the pistons 3, and pushing on the holder 37 against the action of the spring 33, so as to provide pressure control as well as torque control, of the delivery. This piston 63 may be replaced by a bellows.
