Abstract

1,215,946. Reciprocating engines. D.E. JOHNSON. Nov.28, 1967 [Dec. 13, 1966], No.53999/67. Headings F1A, FiB and F1M. An engine comprises a rotatable drive shaft 11, cam means 19 circumscribing and coupled to the drive shaft and disposed radially outwardly thereof, a cylinder 27 having a piston 26 reciprocably received therein and mounted with its axis parallel to the axis of the drive shaft and fluid passage means (not shown) for the cylinder for providing ingress and egress of fluid used in effecting reciprocation of the piston. The cylinder and piston are recessed in the central portions thereof to receive the cam means, the piston being provided in the central recessed portion thereof with a pair of rollers 24, 25 each of which engages a respective cam surface 20, 21 on the cam means whereby reciprocation of the piston in the cylinder acts upon the cam means so as to cause the drive shaft to rotate. The cylinder has a longitudinally extending slot therein for receiving and guiding rollers 49, 50 extending radially outwardly from the piston so as to inhibit rotation of the piston relative to the cylinder. The engine may be a steam engine or internal-combustion engine or be operated by compressed air or hydraulic fluid.
