  • Controller 23 controls washing unit 21, and is provided with a cloth amount detector 23d which detects the amount of clothes put into the washing machine.
  • Cloth amount detector 23d detects the amount of the clothes put in the washing tub by monitoring a rotation speed of the washing tub while washing unit 21 is controlled to cause the motor for turning the washing tub containing clothes to rotate with a constant torque.
  • the method to detect the cloth amount is not limited to this method, and any method can be used as long as the amount of clothes in the washing machine can be detected. For example, a method can be used in which a speed of change in a water level is detected while water is being supplied in the washing tub, or a method may be used in which a weight scale provided on a mechanical element for supporting the washing tub is used.
  • Controller 23 is provided with water level determination unit 23b which determines the water level of water to be supplied into the washing tub at the time of the washing operation.

When the cloth amount is large, the water level is set relatively high; and when the cloth amount is small, the water level is set relatively low. With this arrangement, depending on the amount of the clothes put into washing machine 1, necessary cleaning performance and rinsing performance are obtained without consuming unnecessary amount of water.
