Definitions
- the invention relates to a plasma screen with a front panel, one Back plate and a number of interposed, by partitions separate, gas-containing plasma cells, in which there is a plasma area Plasma can form between two discharge electrodes.
- Such a plasma screen is known for example from EP 764 965 A2. It usually consists of a matrix of plasma cells (microcavities) in which one Gas discharge is ignited. This gas discharge preferably generates radiation in the UV range from a phosphor layer in the plasma cell visible light is converted into one of the colors red, green or blue. This visible light can go through the transparent glass front panel transmit.
- the invention is therefore based on the object of having a plasma screen improved discharge efficiency and with higher efficiency. This The object is achieved by the one specified in claim 1 Plasma screen released.
- the high losses in known plasma screens come in particular by the fact that after the ignition of the gas discharge near the as A cathode acting discharge electrode creates a layer that Glow discharges are mostly referred to as cathode cases.
- a cathode facing region of this layer is a very high electric field strength low ion and electron density observed.
- the current is particularly there carried by the ions, which outnumber the electrons. Due to the High electric field strength, ions are strongly accelerated in this area and give their energy mainly in elastic collisions with the gas molecules and the walls.
- the inventive agents for local narrowing of the plasma area are suitably provided where there is a high electron density, ie not right near the cathode.
- a high electron density ie not right near the cathode.
- the task can also be solved with a plasma screen according to claim 2.
- a plasma screen By extending the discharge path (path on which the discharge takes place between the discharge electrodes) between the Discharge electrodes cause the area referred to as the cathode case in front of the cathode, in which there are more ions than electrons compared to the remaining areas between the discharge electrodes, becomes relatively smaller. Relative So the lossy zone is seen smaller. This can make UV radiation more efficient are generated, and the proportion of the cathode in front of the cathode losses that occur are less.
- solutions according to the invention according to claims 1 and 2 are common inventive idea based on an increase in discharge efficiency and a higher efficiency can be achieved by providing funds that cause an area between the discharge electrodes both the highest possible electric field and as many electrons as possible are in order to be able to excite as many electrons as possible.
- the invention is preferably applied to AC plasma screens in which the plasma cells are controlled by AC voltage and in which the Discharge electrodes according to claim 4 covered by a dielectric layer are.
- the invention can also be used with DC plasma picture screens are used in which the discharge electrodes are not of a dielectric Layer are covered.
- each with one Discharge electrode is arranged on the front plate and on the back plate, can the means for narrowing the plasma area according to claim 7 one arranged on the partitions for separating the individual plasma cells Apertures are formed.
- the narrowing means according to claim 9 are preferably made of dielectric Designed material. However, it is also the use of other materials, such as e.g. Metal or metal with a dielectric coating possible, whereby the Means for narrowing or lengthening the path are given a fixed potential could.
- the design of the is particularly easy to manufacture and easy to adjust Invention according to claim 10. With a suitable design of the wells as In particular, according to claim 11, even several constrictions can be simultaneously introduced into the plasma area and the discharge path can be extended.
- the AC plasma screen shown in detail in FIG. 1 contains one Front plate 1 and a back plate 2.
- the front plate 1 contains a glass plate 3 on a dielectric layer 4 and a thin protective layer 5 (mostly made of MgO) are applied.
- Parallel, strip-shaped, transparent discharge electrodes 6.7 applied so that they from the dielectric layer 4 are covered.
- the back plate 2 contains a glass plate 8 the parallel, strip-shaped, perpendicular to the discharge electrodes 6.7 extending address electrodes 14 are applied.
- These are from Phosphor layers 10, 11, 12 covered in one of the three primary colors red, green, blue.
- the individual phosphor layers 10, 11, 12 are preferably made of dielectric material existing partitions (barriers) 9 separated.
- a single plasma cell 15 in such a plasma screen is shown in Fig. 2.
- the Front plate 1 rotated by 90 ° compared to the illustration in FIG. 1.
- a gas preferably a Noble gas mixture (He, Ne, Xe, Kr).
- a plasma through which radiation 17 in the UV region is preferably generated (or VUV range (vacuum UV range)) is generated.
- This UV radiation 17 stimulates the phosphor layer 10 to glow, the visible light 18 in one of the emits three basic colors, which passes through the front panel 1 to the outside and thus represents a luminous pixel on the screen.
- the dielectric layer 4 over the transparent discharge electrodes 6, 7 serves, among other things, in AC plasma picture screens for a direct discharge between the discharge electrodes 6, 7 consisting of conductive material (metal, mostly ITO (Indium-doped Tin Oxide)) and thus the formation of a To prevent the arc from igniting the discharge. If the electric field strength in the plasma region 16 rises above the ignition field strength, the conductivity of this path increases very quickly by generating charge carriers through ionization. The charge carriers transported and deposited on the dielectric layer reduce the internal field strength to such an extent that the electron losses overcompensate for the electron gain through ionization and the discharge stops automatically.
- conductive material metal, mostly ITO (Indium-doped Tin Oxide)
- FIG. 4 The construction of a plasma screen according to the invention, in which the described Disadvantages to be avoided are shown in detail in FIG. 4.
- Plasma screens are on both the front panel 1 and the rear panel 2 between the discharge electrodes 6,7 upstanding, opposite Walls 20,21 arranged, which are preferably made of dielectric material.
- FIG. 5 in which a single plasma cell is shown such a plasma screen, through these walls 20,21 Plasma region 16 in the middle between the discharge electrodes 6,7 locally at the Position 22 is tapered.
- an area of high electric field strength generated by accelerating the electrons This causes in this area an increase in the mean electron energies, so that there electrical efficiently Energy is converted into excitation and thus into radiation energy.
- FIG. 6 An alternative embodiment of the invention is shown in FIG. 6.
- a wall 23 centrally between the discharge electrons 6, 7 attached, which can, however, come closer to the back plate 2. Even with only Such a wall 23 can taper the plasma area 16 at the point 24 can be achieved.
- a wall 23 can also an extension of the discharge channel between the discharge electrodes 6.7 can be achieved, whereby UV radiation can be generated more efficiently. This comes about through the fact that all areas (see Fig. 3) can be widened, ie also inefficient area directly in front of the cathode which the ion number clearly outweighs the electron number. This area will however broadened by a smaller factor than the subsequent one (efficient) area, roughly equilibrium between the number of electrons and ions prevails.
- FIG. 7 An easy to manufacture embodiment of an inventive Plasma screen is shown in Fig. 7.
- the plasma forms in it Depressions 25, 26 and above the intermediate dielectric wall 27 from (see Fig. 8).
- the depressions 25, 26 can be as shown in FIG. 8 be designed frustoconical with a circular cross section, the Cross section to the back plate 2 becomes smaller, so that there are two local constrictions 28.29 form.
- This embodiment can also have an additional one Extension of the discharge route result.
- Such a front panel 1 can be manufactured step by step.
- the first step involves using a first dielectric layer 21 on the glass plate 3 homogeneous thickness applied to which in a second step another dielectric layer 42 or a dielectric plate is applied.
- this Layer 42 can be sandblasted beforehand or subsequently, for example or the corresponding hole structure can be introduced by baking.
- FIG. 9 A plasma cell 15A of such a plasma screen is shown in FIG. 9.
- the Discharge electrode 6A is on the glass plate 8A of the front plate 1A
- Discharge electrode 7A perpendicular to 6A on the glass plate 3A of the back plate 2A appropriate.
- the plasma region 16A becomes on the latter Locally tapered.
- the introduction is also conceivable several such apertures 32 at different locations around the plasma 16A to narrow several places. The same is also the case in other embodiments Invention the attachment of several local tapering points possible.
- the invention can also be used in an alternative embodiment, not shown can be applied with both discharge electrodes on the back plate are arranged. However, the visible light must cover the phosphor layers penetrate.
