Definitions
- the invention relates to an access system, in particular for motor vehicles.
- Motor vehicle access systems are currently divided into so-called passive access systems and so-called active access systems. Both include an electronic key, normally owned by a person desiring access to the motor vehicle, and a base station located in the motor vehicle for communication with the key. To access the motor vehicle, the key and base station execute a security communication protocol to decide if the access is authorized.
- Passive access systems use a transponder as an electronic key.
- the transponder normally does not contain buttons to be activated and then communicates with the base station when it is within a predetermined distance from the base station.
- Such systems are usually not entirely passive, so the base station is activated for the purpose of communication by an act of the person desiring access, such as by actuating a door handle of the motor vehicle.
- passive access systems have the disadvantage that they are vulnerable to so-called forwarded attacks. These attacks can be carried out if the thief accepts or knows that the key is in the vicinity of the motor vehicle.
- An electronic device detects and amplifies the communication signals between the base station and the key, while - if necessary - the base station is activated, for example, by pulling on the door handle.
- An active access system includes an electronic key that includes user-activated controls to execute the communication protocol. These systems are therefore safer than passive access systems because ownership and activation of the key is necessary to gain access. Nevertheless, these access systems have the disadvantage that they do not have the ease of use of the passive access system.
- an access system for a security zone of a building wherein the security zone at least consists of a security door, an elevator group and doors of other rooms to be secured.
- the access system further comprises portable transceiver units communicating with stationary transceiver units associated with the security door, the elevator group and the doors of the rooms to be secured.
- a mode selection button of the portable transceiver unit a person can select between two operation modes “automatic, continuous” and “manual by push-button".
- the "manual push-button" operation mode corresponds to an active access system in which floors that are less frequently served by the elevators are to be selected by a ten-key, while in the passive mode "automatic, continuous” access is to more frequently served floors.
- a security zone access system comprising a security zone base station and an electronic key for performing a communication protocol with the base station to gain access to the security zone, the electronic key being adapted to communicate with the base station communicate to activate and deactivate a passive access system, and wherein the base station is able to initiate the electronic key to initiate and activate the communication protocol.
- the access system is characterized in that the passive access mode is disabled when the system is unused for a predetermined period of time.
- FIG. 1 Figure 2 is a block diagram of a preferred embodiment of the access system and Figure 2 is a more detailed block diagram of the access system.
- An access system 2 comprises as electronic key a transponder 4 and a base station 6 arranged in a vehicle 8.
- the tan ponder 4 and the base station 6 are able to communicate with each other via a radio link.
- the tan ponder 4 comprises standard transponder components such as an antenna 20, a receiver 22, a transmitter 24 and a microprocessor 26 with a nonvolatile memory 28.
- the base station 6 in the motor vehicle 8 also includes such standard components as an antenna 30, a receiver 32 and a microprocessor 34 with a non-volatile memory 36.
- the base station 6 is part or in the sense of communication with an electronic control unit 38 of the vehicle 8, which controls electronic functions of the motor vehicle, including an immobilizer function.
- the base station 6 is able to communicate with the transponder 4 as a passive access system by the base station 6, the transponder 4 is stimulated to initiate and activate the security communication protocol.
- the base station 6 is programmed to store configuration information and / or parameters in the memory 36.
- configuration information and / or parameters can be set by the transponder 4 to deactivate the passive access mode and thus the passive access system.
- a special initiation signal of the activated transponder 4 is necessary to execute a safety communication protocol.
- the configuration information and / or parameters may also be set in such a manner that the access system 2 is operated in a timer mode in which the base station 6 deactivates the passive access system for a predetermined period of time.
- the configuration information and / or parameters may be manipulated such that the access system 2 is in a so-called limited mode of operation in which the transponder 4 only provides access to certain zones of the motor vehicle 8 and provides access to other zones such as the trunk or glove box or stops.
- the access system 2 has four modes of operation, a passive access mode, an active access mode, a timer mode, and a restricted mode of operation.
- the current operating mode is indicated by the activation and deactivation of the LEDs 10 and 12.
- the activation of the LED 10 indicates the passive access mode in operation
- the activation of the enable LED 12 indicates that the active access mode is active.
- Activation of the two LEDs indicates the timer mode, with the two-time activation of the two LEDs signaling the limited mode of operation.
- LEDs 10 and 12 remain activated for a short period of time only. The mode can be checked by simultaneously pressing the two buttons 14, 16 of the transponder 4.
- Each of the modes may be selected and configured by the user using the transponder 4 to communicate with the base station 6 and setting the configuration information and / or parameters.
- the buttons 14, 16 are to be pressed in a predetermined manner, for example by simultaneously pressing certain buttons or by pressing in a predetermined order.
- the transponder 4 comprises three standard buttons 14 for controlling an active access system and another fourth button 16 for configuring the access system 2 for one of the four modes of operation.
- the fourth button 16 In order to enable or disable the passive access mode to switch between passive access and active access accordingly, the fourth button 16 must be pressed so that switching between the four modes and in accordance between the LEDs 10 and 12.
- buttons 14 and 16 are then used to enter a personal identification number (PIN).
- PIN personal identification number
- Each button 14 to 16 represents a number.
- the LEDs 10 and 12 light up three times. This indicates that the PIN must be entered again to confirm. If the correct PIN is entered a second time, the LEDs 10 and 12 will light up again three times to confirm the entry of a correct PIN.
- a confirmation of the PIN is only necessary if this is selected by the user and not specified by the manufacturer of the transponder 4. Access to the motor vehicle 8 is then limited in that the transponder 4 can not be used to gain access to the restricted areas, such as the trunk and / or glove compartment of the motor vehicle 8.
- Entering the PIN means that the same PIN must be entered to disable the limited mode of operation. Again, the fourth button 16 must be pressed until the LEDs 10 and 12 flash twice. The four buttons 14 and 16 can then be used to enter the correct PIN. When the correct PIN is entered, the LEDs 10 and 12 alternately light three times to indicate the deactivation of the restricted operating mode. In this configuration, the transponder 4 secured by the entry of the PIN and placed in the restricted operating mode can be handed over to the hotel staff or the luggage carrier. In order to avoid the necessity of entering the PIN, the owner may alternatively be provided with at least two transponders 4, which are identical except for a key-specific signature code stored in the memory in each key.
- the base station 6 receives the key-specific signature code and stores it in the memory 36. Only the transponder 4 with the stored signature code can be used to disable the limited mode of operation.
- the owner of the vehicle 8 may for this purpose provide a second transponder 4 for the hotel staff or the luggage carrier, which can not be used to display the limited operating mode.
- the signature code is to be cleared from the base station 6.
- the base station 6 non-volatile stores a master transponder signature code, which is also stored in a master transponder, the master transponder being handed to the owner along with other keys. Only the master transponder can be used to activate and deactivate the hotel operation mode. In this embodiment, the master transponder is always in the possession of the owner and requires a mark or color coding.
- the transponder 4 further includes an audible warning device 40 which is controlled by the microprocessor 26 to deliver a brief audible signal when the transponder 4 receives an authorization signal from the base station 6.
- the base station 6 transmits the authorization signal when it allows access to the motor vehicle 8.
- the authorization signal can also be transmitted when entering a new operating mode. If the owner of the tan-pas 4 is within range of the motor vehicle 8, the owner is made aware of the activated access to the motor vehicle 8, either initiated by the transponder 4 of the owner or another party, such as an unauthorized person.
- the transponder 4 may be provided with an LCD display in place of the LEDs 10 and 12.
- the LCD display is controlled by the microprocessor 26.
- the LCD display is integrated with the transponder 4 and can be activated to control the LCD To display messages to users so that they can easily switch between the four modes of operation.
- the LCD display may alternatively or additionally also be arranged in the motor vehicle 8 and be connected to the base station 6 in order to obtain the same display as that of the tan-panner 4.
- the buttons on the transponder 4 may be used or additional control buttons may be added in the motor vehicle 8. In an alternative embodiment, neither an additional button 16 nor an additional LED are necessary.
- the existing buttons 14 and the existing LED 10 of the transponder 4 can be used for multiple functions.
- buttons 14 may be pressed simultaneously to switch between the four modes.
- the timer can also be set by pressing two of the buttons 14 simultaneously for a predetermined time, and while the LED is flashing in a certain way, one of the buttons 14 can be used to set the delay time.
- the operating mode in which the system 2 is located may be indicated by the flashing frequency of the existing LED 10.
- the access system 2 is particularly advantageous because it provides the user with all the benefits of a passive entry system but increases the security of the system, if desired.
- the system is not vulnerable to so-called forwarded attacks. For example, if the authorized user is sleeping in a motel adjacent to the motor vehicle 8, the passive access mode may be deactivated immediately or for a predetermined period of time be put into the timer mode.
- the access system 2 can be placed in a restricted access mode.
- the transponder 4 emits an acoustic signal when it is within range and the access system 2 provides unauthorized access.
- the access system 2 has the advantages of a passive entry system and the security of an active entry system, which is possible without duplication of standard components, except perhaps providing a key with an additional control button, visual or audible indication.
