Definitions

  • the invention relates to motor oils with high dispersibility and good wear protection.
  • Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates play an important role as anti-wear agents with simultaneous antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor action.
  • metal salt additives naturally forms ash, which together with the residues from the engine oils with increasing duration to the load on the engines. Since the practice is careful to jointly use both types, ie polymer additives and formulated as packages, metal salt-containing additives, the compatibility of the two types of additives is of particular importance. Highly polar, especially basic substitution of the additives can also lead to problems with sealing materials.
  • French Patent FR-A-1 173 356 discloses additive formulations comprising ethylenically unsaturated monomers having from 4 to 30 aliphatic carbon atoms, esters of ⁇ , ⁇ -unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids with polyalkylene glycols having from 2 to 7 carbon atoms and their alkyl ethers and polar Hydroxy and / or amino groups substituted radicals are constructed.
  • Copolymers of long-chain (meth) acrylic acid esters and (meth) acrylic acid monoesters of polybasic alcohols are used, for example, in US Pat. No.
  • EP-B 0 418 610 discloses dispersant-effective VI improvers comprising PAMA polymers (polyalkyl (meth) acrylates) based on long-chain alkyl (meth) acrylates and functionalized (meth) acrylic acid alkyl esters from the group the hydroxyalkyl ester and the polyalkoxylated alkyl ester in combination with olefin copolymers and / or HSD copolymers and / or hydrogenated polyisoprene or polybutadiene described. It is an object of the present invention to provide additized engine oils with high dispersibility and good wear protection whose content of nitrogen-containing dispersants and of ash-forming additives containing phosphorus and metal salts is substantially below the customary and recommended use concentrations.
  • the preparation of the polymer components PC to be used according to the invention in the form of cooligomers and / or copolymers is known per se.
  • cooligomers of this type are described.
  • the novel polymer component PC can also be present in combination with olefin copolymers (OCP) in the form of concentrated polymer emulsions, as described in DE-A 39 30 142 or US Pat. No. 5,188,770.
  • OCP olefin copolymers
  • the cooligomers of the claimed type can be prepared under certain conditions by radical-induced polymerization, for example by thermal polymerization and with the addition of a suitable initiator or a redox system.
  • the polymerization can be carried out in the absence of a solvent but also in the presence of suitable solvents. Accordingly, it is possible to use all conventional solvents which have been identified as the polymerization medium, as well as mineral oils, HC oils, PAO, esters or already prepared oligomers.
  • the 1-alkene can be given in accordance with formula IV in a suitable reaction vessel and brought to a suitable reaction temperature. In general, a temperature range of 80 to 200 degrees C, in particular 160 ⁇ 20 degrees C may be considered as an appropriate range.
  • the component of the formula (I) or the formulas (I) and (II) in the allocated shares preferably in the feed over a certain period of time, for example 0.25 to 10 hours, for example within 5 1/2 hours, the component of the formula (I) or the formulas (I) and (II) in the allocated shares.
  • it is allowed to polymerize for some time, usually a few hours - as an approximate 6 hours stop - polymerize in the batch.
  • Suitable initiators are known radical starters (compare Kirk-Othmer, 3rd Ed., Vol. 13, pg. 355-373, Wiley Interscience 19891, Rauch-Puntigam loc.
  • the total amount of initiator used are generally in the range 0.1 to 10 wt .-%, preferably in the range 0.1 to 5 wt .-% based on the totality of the monomers.
  • initiators are selected whose disintegration characteristics are adapted to the polymerization modalities.
  • a half-life of the initiator (in benzene) at the reaction temperature of about 0.25 hours may be mentioned.
  • peroxide initiators such as di-tert-butyl peroxide.
  • the addition of 0.001-0.005 mol of initiator per portion with addition in portions is again indicated.
  • the mineral oils to be treated are understood to mean the customary paraffin-based or naphthenic base oils and also synthetic oils corresponding to commercial SAE single-range and multigrade classes. Examples include mineral oil NS 100 to NS 600 (BP enerpar 11), hydrocracked (HC) oils, poly- ⁇ -olefins (PAO) and ester oils and also dioctyl adipates or polyol esters, for example (see Ullmanns Enzyklopädie der Techn , Vol. 10, pp. 641-714 VCI).
  • Table 2 compares the result with the formulation according to the invention in the state of the art. Cam and ram wear were measured. Only the maximum value reached in each case is evaluated, which is why only the maximum values were specified during the evaluation (TAB 2).
  • the evaluation shows that by replacing 1.5 Wt .-% polyisobutylene-bis-succinimide against the polymer component PC (in the form of the product of Example A-1), the content of ZnDDP additives from 0.8 to at least 0.5 wt .-% reduce. This corresponds to a reduction of the phosphorus content in the formulation from 0.068 to 0.043%, of the zinc content from 0.078 to 0.049%.
