Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for destroying pests in an object infested therefrom, in which the object is heated in air surrounded by a temperature range in which an organic life of the pests is not possible, and it over a period of time sufficient to safely kill the pests holds in this temperature range and then allowed to cool and controls the relative humidity during the temperature treatment.
- hot air treatment for pest control in roof trusses, wooden beam ceilings, half-timbered walls, etc. in which heated air is admitted into the building under excess pressure and heated to a temperature at which the wood pests are certainly killed if a certain exposure time is observed becomes.
- DIN 688 800 wood protection in building construction The hot air treatment is accompanied by a drying out of the infected object, which is desirable when combating fungi or sponges, particularly in the case of waterlogging, in order to bring the mycelium growth to a standstill and to kill the fungus (cf. DE-OS 33 38 958).
- the known hot air treatment is not suitable for preserving valuable and sensitive objects, in particular works of fine art and handicrafts such as furniture, altars, plastics, picture frames and the like. a. m. It is known that constant climatic conditions are of great importance for the preservation of such objects. Reference should be made to the complex air conditioning systems in museums and restoration workshops, with which the room temperature and air humidity are kept essentially constant.
- the hot air treatment used in construction technology would apply to an object to be restored, e.g. B. an antique piece of furniture, because of the associated dehydration bring serious problems with it. There is a risk of cracks in the wood, warping within the object, lifting and peeling off layers of paint, curling in polishes, embrittlement and loosening of the glue, etc.
- the quarantine provisions of the Cargo Containers Quarantine aspects and procedures, Australian Quarantine Service 1984, cover page, pages 1 and 44 and the form 2 / 5.84 of the agricultural authorities of Baden-written for the treatment confirmation relate to heat sterilization or a kilning of wood used for export to Australia or New Zealand.
- the wood is radically dried at high temperature and then subjected to moisture treatment.
- DE-C-550 315 describes a process for the impregnation of wood, in which the wood is heated until it begins to decompose and its moisture content is not reduced but increased as far as possible.
- the applicant's subsequently published DE-A-38 39 368 is the Tecknik stand in the Federal Republic of Germany.
- the applicant has voluntarily restricted himself with reference to the latter document and submitted separate claims for the Federal Republic of Germany.
- the object of the invention is to provide an environmentally friendly method for the destruction of pests, in particular insects, which is completely harmless to health and which is more sensitive to preservation Objects can be used without the risk of impairment and the demonstrable destruction of all pests is guaranteed.
- a user-friendly and versatile device for performing the method is to be created.
- this object is achieved by regulating the moisture content of the air during the temperature treatment of the object in such a way that there is no or no significantly changed moisture exchange between the object and the air. It is achieved in this way that the object moisture - in the case of objects consisting of wood the wood moisture - is constant to a good approximation during the temperature treatment.
- the temperature treatment under these conditions even with considerable heating, has no negative effects on a sensitive object which is to be preserved, which can be explained by the fact that, in addition to the moisture exchange with the air, which takes place even under normal conditions, no drying or moistening of the Object.
- the latter can be heated for a sufficiently long time in temperature ranges in which there is no organic life, so that the complete killing of all pests is guaranteed. Since no chemicals are used, the process is completely harmless to health and environmentally friendly.
- An essentially constant object moisture can possibly already be achieved by keeping the relative air humidity constant during the temperature treatment. Appropriate treatment of fruit or vegetables is linked to protection.
- relative humidity is the degree of saturation of air with water vapor in relation to the maximum humidity that air can absorb above a water surface.
- This maximum humidity, at which the air is saturated increases with increasing temperature. Without regulating the air humidity during the temperature treatment, the relative air humidity would drop sharply in the phase of heating the object and would increase in the phase of cooling, but would no longer reach the original level due to the drying of the object in the meantime.
- the inventive control of the relative humidity to a constant amount of z. B. 70% to 75%, as it is at room temperature due to natural conditions or air conditioning, includes an enrichment of the air with water vapor in the heating phase and a removal of water vapor in the cooling phase.
- An essentially constant object humidity can be achieved even better if the relative air humidity is increased during the heating phase and lowered in the cooling phase and thereby follows a characteristic curve (hygroscopic isotherm) of the constant object moisture, in particular wood moisture, at the respective temperature and air humidity.
- the object is preferably heated by exposure to hot air. This is beneficial for precise temperature control.
- the object is preferably heated over its full volume to a final temperature of approximately 55 ° C. and held at this final temperature for approximately 60 minutes.
- the object is preferably hot air at a slightly higher temperature, e.g. B. of 57 ° C, exposed. Thermal treatment of the object at 55 ° C for 60 minutes guarantees complete pest destruction.
- Reaching the final temperature can be checked by a core temperature measurement on the object and recorded in a verifiable manner, e.g. B. with a writer.
- the hot air temperature is preferably regulated in such a way that its temperature difference from the measured core temperature does not amount to more than a predetermined amount.
- the fact that the temperature of the process air in the heating phase is only slightly above the measured core temperature and in the cooling phase is only slightly below the measured core temperature prevents excessive temperature gradients and thermal stresses in the object, which is treated very carefully.
- the object should be warmed up from room temperature to the final temperature over a period of several hours so that thermal stresses are avoided as far as possible.
- the time required varies depending on the material and size of the object to be treated, but five to twelve hours can serve as a guide.
- the cooling of the object from the final temperature to room temperature takes a comparable time.
- a climate chamber with an electric heating unit, a blower, a temperature control and an air humidification device is suitable as a device for carrying out the method, the latter being connected to a measuring and control device for the relative air humidity.
- the air heated on the heating unit is circulated by the blower in the climate chamber, which is important for uniform heating of the object and precise temperature control.
- the air humidification device can include a heatable and preferably also a coolable water basin over which the process air sweeps. Water is evaporated from the pool to increase the relative humidity. In the cooling phase, however, the cooled pool can serve as a condenser.
- the air humidification device can also include an ultrasonic nebulizer for water, with which a very fine distribution of the water to be added to the air is achieved.
- the device can have a condenser for water and / or a lockable passage opening for the release of process air to the environment. It has proven practical in the cooling phase to lower the relative humidity by regulatingly releasing a portion of the process air into the environment. Alternatively or additionally, the excess water can be condensed on a condenser when the object is cooled.
- distilled water is evaporated and / or dispersed, which is taken from a reservoir of the device.
- One or more probes can be present for the core temperature measurement already mentioned, one probe having proven to be sufficient.
- the climate chamber can be permanently installed in almost any size. However, mobile operation is also conceivable in which a complete climatic chamber is carried on a vehicle, for example a truck. The user of the method can then drive to the private owner of an object to be treated or a museum in order to carry out the treatment on the spot. Finally, a climate chamber that can be dismantled should also be considered, which is brought in individual parts to the object to be treated and built around it. This procedure is recommended for larger objects that cannot or should not be moved, such as altars.
- An antique wooden cabinet coming for conservation is infested with rodent beetles (anobias), the larvae of which are commonly referred to as wood worms.
- the cabinet is placed in a climatic chamber, which is permanently installed in the restorer's studio.
- a probe for core temperature measurement is attached to the thickest wooden parts of the cabinet.
- the climatic chamber is closed and an electrically heated hot air blower located in it is put into operation in order to heat the cabinet.
- the temperature of the hot air as it exits the fan is regulated. It is initially 24 ° C and is raised under program control, the temperature difference from the measured core temperature not exceeding 4 ° C is.
- a measuring and control device detects the relative air humidity in the climatic chamber and controls an air humidification device which consists of a heatable and coolable trough with distilled water, over which the hot air coming from the fan sweeps.
- the relative air humidity is increased in the heating phase, the control of the air humidification device following a characteristic curve of constant wood moisture at the respective temperature and relative air humidity.
- the hot air is enriched with water evaporated from the pool.
- the air temperature, the air humidity and the core temperature measured with the probe are recorded with a multiple recorder. After heating for eight hours, the probe measured a core temperature of 55 ° C.
- the temperature of the hot air is 57 ° C.
- the heating power and the air humidification device are now regulated so that the temperature and humidity of the process air remain essentially constant, while the core temperature of 55 ° C. is maintained over a treatment time of at least 60 minutes. This is followed by slow cooling, during which the temperature of the hot air is reduced substantially linearly and the heating is finally switched off.
- the temperature difference to the measured core temperature is also a maximum of 4 ° C in this phase.
- the relative air humidity is reduced in accordance with the characteristic curve of constant wood moisture, for which purpose the tub is cooled with distilled water and, moreover, process air is released to the environment through an opening which can be optionally locked and released with a controlled flap arrangement.
- the air temperature in the climate chamber is 22 ° C and a core temperature of 25 ° C is measured. This creates conditions under which the cabinet can be removed from the climate chamber.
- a climate chamber of the type described above is installed on a truck, with which the user of the method drives up to private owners of objects to be treated or museums without their own restoration department.
- the objects are brought to the truck in the climatic chamber and thermally treated there as in Example 1.
- a climatic chamber is built around an altar made of scaffolding and insulation panels in order to treat the altar as in Example 1. Due to the size of the property, longer heating and cooling times can be expected.

Description
Patentanmeldung Ser. No. 07/270 608 beschrieben.
- Aus dem Fachbuch H. E. Desch, Timber - Its structure properties and utilization, 6.
Auflage, 1.
