Definitions
- the invention relates to a dampening unit for an offset printing machine with a pair of rollers, consisting of an applicator roller for applying dampening solution to a plate cylinder and a metering roller, a first contact zone formed by mutual pressing of the metering roller and the application roller along axially parallel surface lines of the roller pair in contact, with a gear mechanism for driving the pair of rollers with the circumferential speeds of the metering roller and the application roller essentially pointing downward in the region of the first contact zone and with a reservoir for dampening solution formed above the first contact zone and formed by the lateral surfaces of the pair of rollers and sealing means at its ends .
- Such a dampening system is known from DE-OS 22 06 498.
- the applicator roller for the dampening solution is driven via a gear connected to it by a gear meshing with it and connected to the plate cylinder.
- This type of drive harbors the risk of the formation of so-called “toothed strips” on the printed material, which can be caused by backlash.
- the object of the present invention is to propose a generic dampening system with which a clean print image can be achieved, which is in particular free of "toothed strips”.
- the applicator roller is driven exclusively by friction.
- the generally elastic coating of the application roller alleviates any vibrations resulting from the gear drive of the metering roller, so that the undesired appearance of so-called “toothed strips” is counteracted.
- the operation of the dampening system according to the invention with the specified slip between the plate cylinder and applicator roller also provides, as a further advantage, an extremely stable damp film on the printing plate which does not tear off easily.
- Another advantage of the slip mentioned is that it counteracts the oxidation of the printing plate.
- the Dampening unit comprises a metering roller 3 and an applicator roller 4 for the dampening solution.
- the metering roller 3 is supported by a shaft 6, which is received on both sides in the machine's fixed bearings.
- a bearing plate 7 is arranged on each shaft journal of the shaft 6 so as to be pivotable about the latter.
- the two bearing plates 7 are connected to one another by means of crossbeams 8.
- the applicator roller 4 is supported with its ends in a sliding shoe 9, which in turn slides on straight guide surfaces 10 incorporated into the bearing plates 7. These guide surfaces 10 are substantially parallel to the direction of a tangent to the plate cylinder 2 in the second contact zone 34.
- the respective sliding shoe 9 is connected to a shaft 11 which is threaded at the free end and runs in the direction of the guide surfaces 10 and from the respective one Bearing plate 7 is guided.
- a compression spring 12 supported on the bearing plate 7 acts on the respective sliding shoe 9 in the direction of “releasing the contact with the metering roller”.
- the shaft 11 also penetrates a recess 13 in the respective bearing plate 7, in each of which an actuator for the respective sliding block 9 is provided.
- the respective actuator is formed from a slidably arranged on the shaft 11 and against a screwed onto the thread of the shaft 11 an adjusting sleeve 18 and a rack 17 (not shown) meshing with the rack 17 and 16 coaxial with a worm gear.
- the gears (not shown) for adjusting the respective rack 17 are jointly fastened on an adjusting shaft 19.
- the worm wheel 16, which is in engagement with a worm 15, is also fastened on this adjusting shaft 19, so that the adjusting shaft 19 can be rotated by means of an actuating part 14 arranged on the worm 15.
- the dampening solution In the upper gusset between the metering roller 3 and the application roller 4 is the dampening solution, which is enclosed here by suitable sealing means (not shown) on the end faces of these rollers.
- An amount of dampening solution which can be adjusted by the mutual pressing of these rollers with the aid of the actuating part 14 is conveyed through the first contact zone 20 of these rollers over the lateral surface of the application roller 4 located under this contact zone 20 to the plate cylinder 2.
- the dampening unit has a gear drive for driving the pair of rollers formed from the metering roller 3 and the applicator roller 4, with the circumferential speeds of the pair of rollers pointing downward in the region of the contact zone 20.
- This gear transmission drives the metering roller 3 at an increased peripheral speed compared to the peripheral speed of the plate cylinder 2. This is done via a drive wheel 21 of the gear transmission, which meshes with a gear 22 which is arranged on the shaft 6 and is connected to the latter via a freewheel (not shown).
- a trough 32 serves to collect dampening solution residues from the storage space 33 when the metering roller 3 and the application roller 4 are separated from one another at the first contact point 20, if necessary for cleaning purposes, by means of the actuating part 14.
- the application roller 4 is driven in the second position shown in the drawing by friction in the first contact zone 20 and in the second contact zone 34, while driving the application roller 4 in the first position, not shown, in which the application roller 4 is lifted off the plate cylinder 2 , exclusively by friction in the first contact zone 20.
- the dampening unit 1 in the drawing is in its second position, set against the plate cylinder 2 shown. To switch off the dampening unit, it can be pivoted counterclockwise into its first position by pivoting the bearing plates 7 about the shaft journal of the shaft 6.
- Damping rollers of dampening systems are generally carried out with a soft surface.
- a braking torque acts on the pair of rollers as a result of the flexing work, which is to be applied when the metering roller 3 and applicator roller 4 are pressed against one another.
- these frictional moments are deliberately exploited and compensated by driving the metering roller 3 at a higher speed than the plate cylinder 2 so that the application roller 4 rotates in the second position at a peripheral speed of the order of 0.5-2 % is less than the peripheral speed of the plate cylinder 2.
- the size of the braking torque exerted by the sealing means on the application roller 4 can be influenced within certain limits by the sealing force exerted by the sealing means.
- the increased peripheral speed of the metering roller 3 is achieved in that the outer diameter of the metering roller 3 is made larger than the pitch circle of the gear wheel 22 driving it.

Abstract
