Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein elektrooptisches Anzeigeelement mit einer Elektrode, die aus einem durchsieht!-
gen, elektrisch !eitenden Substrat mit Beschichtung aus
clektrochromem Materia! besteht, mit einer Gegenelektrode
und einer Elektrolytschicht aus einem in Wasser gelösten Polymer, die in Kontakt mit der Elektrode
steht und eine ionenleitende Verbindung zwischen der :i
Elektrode und der Gegenelektrode gewährleistet
In der US-PS 38 79 108 ist ein elektrooptisches Anzeigeelement für die Verwendung in Datenanzeigevorrichtungen
und Bildeinrichtungen beschrieben, das übereinander angeordnet ein Elektrodenpaar enthält, jo
zwischen dem zwei einander entsprechende elektrochrome Schichten angeordnet sind, die durch ein
halbfestes leitfähiges Mittel getrennt sind, das in Form von Paste, Schmiere oder Gel, die leitfähige Materialien
enthalten oder selbst leitfähig :>ind, vorliegt und in einem J5
Abstandhalterring untergebracht .it. Als elektrochromes
Material ist Wolframoxid angegeben. Als leitfähiges Mittel ist unter anderem auch hydrolysiertes
Polyacrylamid genannt. Hydrolysiertes Polyacrylamid in halbfester Form, wie auch die anderen oben
genannten leitfähigen Mittel, enthält eine große Menge an Wasser, wodurch Korrosionsprobleme am elektrochromem
Material (WO3) und an den Elektroden auftreten.
In den US-PS 37 04 057, 37 08 220, 38 19 252,
38 27 784 sind ebenfalls elektrooptische Anzeigeelemente beschrieben. Als Elektrolyt dient dabei — wie
unter anderem auch in der US-PS 38 79 108 angegeben — ein Gemisch aus Glycerin und Schwefelsäure. Ein
solcher Elektrolyt greift jedoch allmählich sowohl durch Erosion als auch durch Lösen die elektrochrome Schicht
an. Der Angriff macht sich sowohl nach einer gewissen Anzahl von Zyklen als auch nach einer gewissen
Lagerdauer bemerkbar. Der Mechanismus dieses Angriffs ist bislang nur unzureichend bekannt, jedoch «
kann angenommen werden, daß er im wesentlichen auf die Anwesenheit von Wasserspuren oder Spuren eines
Komplexbildners zurückzuführen ist.
Weiterhin ist aus der US-PS 37 12 710 ein bei Raumtemperatur ionenleitender fester Elektrolyt bekannt.
Bei Verwendung dieses festen Elektrolyten im elektrooptischen Anzeigeelement der beschriebenen
Art treten jedoch bereits nach kurzem Betrieb dadurch Kontaktprobleme an der Grenzfläche zwischen der
Elektrode und dem festen Elektrolyten auf, daß sich f.r>
dieser von der Elektrode ablöst.
Der Erfindung liegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, ein elektrooptisches Anzeigeelement anzugeben, das bei
Betrieb und Lagerung langfristig stabil bleibt und kurze Zykluszeiten ermöglicht
Diese Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß die Elektrolytschicht fest oder pastos ist und das
Polymer Polystyrolsulfonsäure, Polyacrylsäure, PoIymethacrylsäure
oder Polyphenolsulfonsäure ist.
Gebräuchlicherweise werden die Ionenaustauscherharze
als Schüttung eines Granulats oder kleiner Kugeln in Säulen verwendet wobei die Schüttung ein
Leervolumen aufweist Beim Bauelement der Erfindung wird dagegen ein Ionenaustauscherharz in Form einer
kontinuierlichen, porenfreien und ein vorgegebenes Volumen leerraumfrei ausfüllenden Schicht eingesetzt.
Solche Schichten sind als Ionenaustauschermembranen bekannt Diese Membrane sind zwar an sich geeignete
Elektrolyte für die Herstellung der Bauelemente, erfordern zur Herstellung ausreichender elektrischer
Kontakte zwischen den Elektroden und dem Elektrolyten im Bauelement jedoch erhebliche Andruckkräfte.
Der elektrische Kontakt kann statt durch die Andruckkräfte auch in der Weise hergestellt werden, daß die
Austauschermembran bis zur Sättigung mit einem Elektrolyt getränkt wird, der mit der elektrooptischen
Schicht verträglich ist. Durch dieses Verfahren ist jedoch wieder in der zuvor beschriebenen Weise die
elektrochrome Schicht dem aggressiver, erodierenden Angriff des Elektrolyten ausgesetzt
Einen guten und dauerhaften Kontakt zwischen den Elektroden und dem polymeren ionenaustauscherharz
erhält man durch Lösung in Wasser, wobei man den Solvatationsgrad des Systems so wählt, daß die
Konsistenz fest oder pastos ist
Die vorstehende Beschreibung berücksichtigt hinsichtlich der Elektrolyte noch nicht den Fall, daß die
Ionenaustauschermembran zwischen der Elektrolytlösung im Anodenraum und der EleKtrolytlösung im
Kathodenraum eine Trennfunktion ausübt Dies ist der Fall, wenn das elektrochrome Bauelement der Erfindung
mit einer Austauschermembran ausgerüstet ist, die als semipermeable Trennwand für jinen oder mehrere
flüssige Elektrolyte wirkt.
Der Elektrolyt wirkt häufig fur sichtbares Licht streuend und bzw. oder undurchsichtig. Wenn die Zelle
zwei zueinander symmetrische und aus gleichem Material bestehende elektrochrome Elektroden besitzt,
ist der Elektrolyt undurchsichtig, denn wenn er es nicht wäre, könnte man die Farbänderung einer der
elektrochromen Schichten nicht wahrnehmen, da die andere elektrochrome Schicht gleichzeitig durch die
durchsichtige erste Elektrode hindurch gesehen würde. Ein streuender Untergrund ist beispielsweise auch dann
erforderlich, wenn die Hilfselektrode reflektierend ist, beispielsweise aus einem Metall besteht, oder schwarz
ist, beispielsweise aus Graphit besteht. Auch wenn die' Hilfselektrode koplanar zur elektrochromen Elektrode
angeordnet ist, wird ein verbesserter Kontrast erhalten, wenn der Elektrolyt einen das Licht streuenden
Untergrund bildet. Diese Undurchsichtigkeit oder dieses Streuvermögen kann durch Zusatz eines
Pigmentes, beispielsweise durch Zusatz von TiOj, zum
Ionenaustauscherharz hergestellt werden. Prinzipiell kann je nach den Anforderungen des Einzelfalls jedes
beliebige Pigment zugesetzt werden, solange es mit dem Austauscherharz verträglich ist. Zur Erzielung der
verschiedensten Farbeffekte können die Farbtöne der Pigmente frei gewählt werden. Die Verwendung eines
festen oder pastösen Elektrolyten ermöglicht gegenüber der Verwendung eines flüssigen Elektrolyten den
Vorteil, daß eine mehrfarbige Anzeige in einem einzigen
Element mit einer einzigen Zelle realisiert werden kann.
Der im elektrooptischen Bauelement der Erfindung verwendete feste oder pastose Elektrolyt weist
gegenüber flüssigen Elektrolyten weiterhin den Vorteil ι auf, daß er geringere Probleme beim Zusammenbau und
der Abdichtung aufwirft, und zwar eben gerade wegen · seines Aggregatzustandes.
Um den Vorgang des Ionenausf.auschs mit zufriedenstellendem
Wirkungsgrad ablaufen zu lassen, muß das in gebräuchlicherweise körnig eingesetzte Austauscherharz
in seinem gesamten Volumen aktiviert werden. Dies führt zu einer hohen Volumenkonzentration der
austauschbaren Ionen im Austauscherharz und gleichzeitig zu einer Erhöhung Jer Diffusionsgeschwindigkeit
der Ionen in der Polymerphase. Diese beiden Eigenschaften sind gleichzeitig die wichtigsten von der festen
Phase des Ionenaustauscherelektrolyts geforderten Eigenschaften bei seiner Verwendung im Bauelement
der Erfindung.
Der im elektrooptischen Bauelement der Erfindung verwendete Elektrolyt wirkt gleichzeitig als Schutzschicht
für die elektrochrome Schicht und ·. erlangen dadurch die Betriebsdauer des Bauelements im Vergleich
zu Bauelementen, die mit bekannten Elektrolyten 2=>
arbeiten.
In der Fig. 1 ist der Aufbau eines elektrooptischen
Anzeigeelements gezeigt. Ein elektrisch selbst nicht leitendes Substrat, eine Glasplatte 1, ist mit einer
durchsichtigen dünnen elektrisch leitenden Schicht 2, n>
vorzugsweise aus SnO2, bedeckt. Diese Schichtstruktur
bildet insgesamt ein elektrisch leitendes durchsichtiges vorderes Substrat des Bauelementes. Auf diesem
Substrat wird die elektrochrome Schicht 3 aufgebracht, die vorzugsweise aus WO3 besteht. Die elektrochrome js
Schicht wird im Falle von Anzeigeelementen nach Maßgabe eines vorgegebenen Musters, beispielsweise
der bekannten 7-Segmentanordnung, aufgetragen. Die Dreischichtenstruktur 1,2,3 bildet die Elektrode.
Dir Gegenelektrode ist eine Schicht 5, die mindestens
eine elektrochrome WO^-Schicht aufweist, die im Falle des WO] vorzugsweise mit 1O°/oigur wäßriger Schwefelsäure
bei —1,0V gegen Hg/HgaSO4 behandelt worden
ist. Die so hergestellte stark gefärbte Gegenelektrode wird vor ihrer Verwendung im Bauelement der
Erfindung gründlich gewaschen und getrocknet.
Zwischen die Elektrode und die Gegenelektrode ist der feste oder pastose Elektrolyt 4 eingefügt. Er wird
vorzugsweise ausgehend vom Natriumsalz der Polystyrolsulfonsäure,
Molekulargewicht 7000, hergestellt Das Salz wird mit einer Konzentration von etwa 10 g/l in
deionisiertem Wasser gelöst und über einen sauren Ionenaustauscher gegeben. Zu der so erhaltenen
wäßrigen Polystyrolsulfonsäurelösung werden, bezogen auf das Trockengewicht der Polystyrolsulfonsäure, etwa
5 bis 10Gew.-% eines sonnengelben TiO2-Sb2O3-Pigmentes
gegeben, um dem Elektrolyten optisch streuende, die Hilfselektrode maskierende Eigenschaften zu
verleihen. Die das gelbe Pigment und die Polystyrolsulfonsäure enthaltende Lösung wird anschließend bis zur
Bildung einer viskos-elastischen Paste eingedampft.
Die so erhaltene 5 bis 10Gew.-% gelbes Pigment
enthaltende Polystyrolsulfonsäurepaste wird auf die die Schicht 5 bildende Gegenelektrode und auf die
Dreischichtenelektrode 1, 2, 3 aufgetragen. Anschließend werden die beiden so beschichteten Elektroden
aufeinandergedrückt.
Die Elektrolytschicht 4 ist in dem in F i g. 2 gezeigten Ausführungsbeispiel der Erfindung als nur sehr dünne
Schicht ausgebildet und dient bei dieser Ausbildung im wesentlichen nur als Schutzschicht für die elektrochrome
Elektrode. Die ionenleitende elektrische Verbindung zwischen der Elektrode und der Gegenelektrode ist
durch einen zweiten Elektrolyten 6 gewährleistet, der zum ersten Elektrolyten 4 in Reihe geschaltet ist. Dieser
zweite Elektrolyt 6 kann praktisch beliebiger Art, auch flüssig, sein. Er darf lediglich weder den Elektrolyten 4
noch die Gegenelektrode 5 angreifen.

- Patentanspruch;Elektrooptisches Anzeigeelement mit einer Elektrode, die aus einem durchsichtigen, elektrisch leitenden Substrat mit Beschichtung aus elektro- ϊ chromen Material besteht, mit einer Gegenelektrode und einer Elektrolytschicht aus einem in Wasser gelösten Polymer, die in Kontakt mit der Elektrode steht und eine ionenleitende Verbindung zwischen der Elektrode und der Gegenelektrode gewährlei- in stet, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Elektrolytschicht fest oder pastos ist und das Polymer Polystyrolsulfonsäure, Polyacrylsäure, Polymethacrylsäure oder Polyphenolsulfonsäure ist
