Die Erfindung "betrifft Hochdruck (EP)-Schmieröle.
Hohe Belastungen treten häufig in den SammelgetrielDen, die in
Kraftfahrzeugdifferentialen verwendet werden, in Druckluftwerkzeugen,
Gaskompressoren, hydraulischen Hochdrucksystemen, MetalllDearbeitungsanlagen und ähnlichen Einrichtungen

sowie in vielen Arten von Lrgern auf. Um die unerwünschten
Auswirkungen zu vermeiden, die sich "bei Verwendung uncompoundierter
Öle unter diesen hohen Drücken ergeben, enthalten die in diesen Fällen benutzten Schmiermittel "EP-Zusätze". Meistens
handelte es sich bei diesen Mitteln bisher um organische oder metallorganische Verbindungen, die öllöslich sind oder dem Öl
leicht als stabile Dispersion beigemischt werden können.
Kürzlich wurde von Peeler in der amerikanischen Patentschrift 3 313 727 ein EP-Schmiermittel beschrieben, das durch Dispersion
eines anorganischen hydratisieren Natrium- oder Krliumborats in einem nichtpolaren Schmieröl erhalten wird. Das Borat, Wasser,
und ein einfacher Emulgator wurden dem nichtpolaren Medium zugesetzt. Das Gemisch wurde dann gerührt und so eine Dispersion
von Wasser in dem Öl hergestellt, die erwärmt wurde, um das Borat zu dehydratisieren,, Peeler beschrieb weiter, dass die üblichen
Additive wie Rostschutzmittel, Detergentien, Schauminhibitoren usw. in dem fertigen borathaltigen Schmiermittel vorhanden sein
können.
Die von Peeler beschriebenen borathaltigen Öle haben aber im Gebrauch schwerwiegende Nachteile. Wenn Wasser in das borathaltige
Schmiermittelsystem gelangt, kristallisiert Borat aus dem Öl aus und bildet harte Körnchen. Diese Körnchen verursachen
heftige Geräusche und können unter Umständen die Getriebe oder Lager reibst beschädigen. Außerdem setzt der Verlust an Borat
durch Kristallisation die EP-Funktion des Schmiermittels stark herab.
In der oben angeführten Patentschrift'von Peeler v/erden Nrtrium-
und Kaliumborat enthaltende Schmiermittel beschrieben. Das Borat

wird in dem Schmieröl mittels eines einfachen Emulgators oder
Diepergierungomittels-dispergiert. Bei dem Dispergens handelt
es Gich um eine Substanz aus der grossen Vielzahl ionischer und
nichtionischer Stoffe, von denen viele, darunter Sulfonate und
Succinimide, von Peeler angeführt werden«, Die genannte Patentschrift
bezieht sich wiederum auf die amerikanische: Patentschrift 2 987 476 hinsichtlich der detaillierten Beschreibung vieler ionischer
Dispergierungsmittel, die "benutzt werden können, um "anorganische
Borsäureverbindungen" den im wesentlichen nichtpolaren Ölen "beizumischen· In der amerikanischen Patentschrift 1 101 449
wird eine wässrige Lösung he schrieben, die Hatriumborat und ein
Kolloid-Dispergens enthält. In der amerikanischen Patentschrift 2 753 305 wird ein in Metallwalζanlagen verwendetes Schmiermittel
beschrieben, das einen Alkohol, ein Alkaliborat, ein "Seife lösendes Kupplungsmittel", Paraffinwachs und ein sulfuriertes Öl
enthält. In der amerikanischen Patentschrift 2 781 314 wird die Beimischung fester, feinverteilter Rostschutzmittel von 0,1 bis
100 Mikron Durchmesser, beispielsweise Metallsulfonate, zu den
Ölen beschrieben. Die Getriebeschmierung wird bei G-uthrie, PETROLEUM
PRODUCTS HANDBOOK (1st Ed., McGraw-Hill Book Co.: I960), auf den Seiten 9-47 bis 9-49 und bei Boner, GEAR AND TRANSMISSION
LUBRICMTS (Reinhold Publ. Corp.: 1964), auf den Seiten 85-100
diskutiert. Die Steinbohrerschmierung wird in LUBRICATION (Texaco,
Inc., Vol. 56, Mo. 5:1970), Seite 61-76 besprochene
Ziel der Erfindung ist ein Hochdruck-Schmiermittel mit verbesserter
Wasserverträglichkeit.
Das crfindungsgemässe Schmiermittel enthält ein Öl von geeigneter
Viskosität, in dem 1 bis 60 Gewichtsprozent (bezogen auf die

Gesamtmischung) amorpher» weniger als 1 Mikron grosser Partikeln
hydratisiertes N&triumbojfst mit 0,5 "bis 4 Hydratwasser dispergiert
sind» wobei diese Dispersion des Borats in dem öl mit
Hilfe eines Dispergensgemisches hergestellt worden ist» das aus
40 "bis S9t9 Gewichtsprozent eines lipapMlen» anionischen» grenzflächenaktiven
Agens, das ein Metall der Gruppe II -and Schwefel
enthält» lind aus 0»! bis 60 Gewichtsprozent eines lipopnile»,
nichtionischen t. grenzflächenaktiven Agens besteht. Geeignete
anionische Dispergierungsmittel sind Metallsulfonate und sulfuriert
e Phenolate, während zu den nichtionischen Dispergierungsmitteln
Succinimide und Pentaerythritderivate zählen·
Die erfindungsgemässen Mischungen sind stabile EP-Schmiermittel
mit verbesserter Wasserverträglichkeit. Sie zeigen ein gutes "Verhalten in Standardtests wie z.B. dem wVier-Kugeltt-3!est, Es
ist keine Kristallbildung festzustellen, wenn die Schmiermittel mit Wasser in Berührung gelangen. Die Mischungen sind für zahlreiche
Zwecke brauchbar» wo hohe Drücke auftreten» und eignen sich besonders als Schmiermittel für Kraftfahrzeugdifferentiale. Die
Produkte besitzen flüssige oder halbflüssigg Konsistenz und riele
sind transparent, eine Eigenschaft, die sehr vorteilhaft ist, wenn auf das Aussehen Wert gelegt wird oder wenn die geschmierten
Getriebe oder Lager während des Betriebs beobachtet werden sollen.
Sie können auch zerstäubt werden und eignen sich als Sprühmittel;
auch unter hohen Drücken entzünden sie si/ch nicht. In den
meisten Fällen sind rie nichttoxisch und reizen die Haut nicht.
Die erfindungsgemässen Mischungen sind EP-b'chmiermittel mit verbesserter
Wasserverträglichkeit, die gekennzeiclinet nind durch
ein Ol mit geeigneter Viskosität, ein hjdrotisiertes Natriumborat

mit 0,5 "bis 4 Hydratwasser und ein Dispergensgemisch, das aus
40 "bis 99,9 Gewichtsprozent eines anionischen, lipophilen, grenzflächenaktiven
Agens, das ein Metall der Gruppe II und Schwefel enthält, und aus 0,1 "bis 60 Gewichtsprozent eines lipophilen,
nichtionischen, grenzflächenaktiven Agens besteht.
Die hydratisierten Borate der erfindungsgemässen Schmiermittel
sind hydratisierte NatriumboaiEte der Formel
worin χ eine Zahl von 1 "bis 2 und y eine Zahl zwischen 0,5 und
4 ist. Die Formel ist als empirisch anzusehen und soll nicht exakt angeben, in welcher-Form Borat und Wasser in dem Öl vorliegen.
Einzelne, in dem Öl dispergierte Boratglas-Partikeln können eine Zusammenfe±zung haben, die nicht dieser Formel ent-"
spricht, alier die Formel gilt für die durchschnittliche Gesamtzusammensetzung
aller Partikeln.
Die Boratglas-Partikeln besitzen fast alle eine Grosse von weniger
als 1 Mikron und grösstenteils von weniger als 0,5 Mikron.
Geeignete Natriumborate sind die Metaborate und !Petraborate mit
0,5 bis 4 Hydratwasser sowie Gemische dieser Borate. Bevorzugte Mischungen sind Natriummetaborate mit 1,5 bis 2,5 Hydratwasser.
Die erfindungsgeaäesen Mischungen enthalten im allgemeinen etwa
J, bis 25 Gewichtsprozent (einschliesslich Hydratwasser) Natriumt rat und vorzugsweise etwa 5 bis 15 Gewichtsprozent, Durch Redu
erung der ölmenge können aber Konzentrate erhalten werden,

die 25 bis 60 Gewichtsprozent des hydratisierten Natriumborats
a/ufweisen,, Diese Konzentrate werden vor dem Gebrauch, durch Zusatz von Öl auf die gewünschte Boratkonzentration verdünnt.
Schmieröl
Das Medium, in dem das Borat dispergiert ist, kann jede beliebige Flüssigkeit mit niedriger Dielektrizitätskonstante sein, die
unter den Reaktionsbedingungen indifferent (vor allem unverseifbar) ist und eine für ein Schmiermittel geeignete Viskosität
besitzt. Die Viskositäten geeigneter Flüssigkeiten liegen im allgemeinen
bei 35 bis 50 000 Saybolt-fUniversal^Sekunden (SUS) bei
38 C. Das flüssige Medium oder das Öl kann natürlicher oder synthetischer
Herkunft sein. Zu den natürlichen Kohlenwasserstoffölen zählen Öle auf Paraffin- und Naphthenbasis sowie auf gemischter
Basis. Synthetische Öle oind beispielsweise Polymere verschiedener
Olefine (im allgemeinen mit 2 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen), alkylierte aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe usw. Nientkohlenwasserstoffe
sind u.a. Polyalkylenoxide (z.B. Polylthylenoxid), aromatische
Äther, Silikone usw. Bevorzugte Medien sind natürliche wie synthetische Kohlenwasserstofföle, von denen wiederum solche
bevorzugt sind, die SAE-Viskositätszahlen von 5W bis 2OW und 20
bis 250 besitzen (siehe Guthrie, Seite 9-15) und ganz besonders
solche, deren SAE-Viskositätszahlen im Bereich von 75 bis 250 Riegen.
Der Schmierölgehalt der Mischung hängt von der Konzentration der übrigen Komponenten ab, denn das Schmieröl bildet den Rest der
Mischung, nachdem die Konzentrationen von Natriumborat, Disper-

gensgemisch und gegebenenfalls irgendwelcher Additive festgelegt
sind. Gewöhnlich liegt die Qlkonzentration im Bereich von 65
"bis etwa 99 Gewichtsprozent* vorzugsweise. 80 Ms etwa 95 Gewichtsprozent
in der B&triebsmischung und "bei etwa IO "bis etwa 65 Gewichtsprozent
in dem Konzentrat.
Ein wichtiges Merkmal äer Erfindung,, das. die Verwendung der erfindungsgemässen
Mischungen in Gegenwart von Wasser gestattet* ohne dass es zur Kristallisation kommt t besteht in dem Vorhandensein eines Dispergensgemiseh.es, das die Batriiimboratpartikeln
in dem Öl fein verteilt» Dieses Dispergensgemisch enthält zwei
Komponenten: ein lipophiles, anionisches,grenzflächenaktives
Agens (oder "Dispergens"), das ein Metall der Gruppe II und Schwefel
enthält, und ein lipophiles, nichtionisches, grenzflächenaktives Agens (oder "Dispergens")· (Der Ausdruck "lipophil" ist
hier als synonym mit "hydrophob" anzusehen, was "bedeutet, dass
eine Verbindung praktisch unlöslich in und ujjmischbar mit Wasser
ist und sich leicht in organischen Flüssigkeiten mit einem elektrischen
Dipolmoment von 0,5 Debye-Einheiten oder weniger löst.)
Die Konzentrationen des anionischen Dispergens und des nichtioniachen
Dispergens in dem Gemisch liegen im Bereich von 40 bis 99,9
Gewichtsprozent für das anionische Dispergens und 60 bis 0,1 Gewichtsprozent
für des nichtionische Diepergens« Vorzugsweise
liegt das anionische Dispergens in einer Menge von 50 bis 95 Gewichtsprozent und das nichtionische Dispergens von 50 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent
vor. Das Gewientsverhältnic von cnionischcm Diepergens
zu nichtionischem Dispergens liegt gewöhnlich im Bereich

von 6-1:1, vorzugsweise 4-1:1.
Das lipophile, onionische, grenzflächenaktive Agens ist eine
Verbindung oder ein Gemisch von Verbindungen, die alle ein Metall der Gruppe II und Schwefel enthalten. Eine Anzahl dieser Verbindungen
ist in den vorerwähnten amerikanischen Patentschriften 3 313 727 und 2 987 476 beschrieben,, Besonders bevorzugt sind
Salze ölloslicher, schwefelhaltiger, carbocyclischer Verbindungen,
die eine benaoide oder cycloaliphatische Struktur besitzen können.
Hierzu gehören die Salze der carbocyclischen Schwefelsäuren.
Bei den Salzen dieser Säuren handelt es sich um Salze der Metalle,
die üblicherweise der Gruppe II zugerechnet werden, das heißt der Erdalkalimetalle, und gewöhnlich um Salze von Magnesium, Strontium,
Calcium und Bexium, besonders Calcium und Magnesium. Diese Salze können durch direkte Umsetzung der Säure mit einer Base oder
einem Salz des Metalls der Gruppe II hergestellt werden. Sie können aber auch in der Weise erhalten werden, dass zunächst ein
Salz der Säure mit einem Metall der Gruppe I durch Keutralisierung
der Säure mit einer Base dieses Metalls hergestellt wird, worauf das Öalz des Metalls der Gruppe I in das Salz des Metalls
der Gruppe II durch Übertragungsreaktion mit einem Salz oder einer Base des Metalls der Gruppe II umgewandelt wird« Verfahren zur
Herstellung solcher öalze nach allen diesen Methoden sind dem
Fachmann geläufig.
Die öllösliehen carbocyclischen Schwefelsäuren, deren Salze hier verwendet werden, sind carbocyclische Sulfonsäuren, Sulfaminsäuren,·
Sulfinsäuren, Thiosulfonsäuren und andere. Diese Säuren
können cycloaliphatische oder alkylcuTi/festituierte aromatische ,
Konfiguration besitzen,

Eine besonders geeignete Gruppe öllöslicher Salze von carbocyclischen
Schwefelsäuren umfasst die Salze von Sulfonsäuren verschiedener Art wie cycloaliphatische, hydroaromatisehe, aromatische
(Benzolsulfonsäuren wie auch Naphthalinsulfonsäuren)
und heterocyclische Säuren sowie deren Gemische. Als Salze geeigneter Säuren seien angeführt die Salze von Sulfonsäuren
wie z.B. Benzolsulfonsäuren, Toluolsulfonsäuren, Naphthalinsulfonsäuren,
Triisopropyl-naphthalinsulfonsäuren, Polyamylnaphthalinsulfonsäuren, Diphenylsulfonsäuren und andere. Von besonderem
Interesse sind die Salze von Sulfonsäuren aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoffe, die mit einer höheren Alkylgruppe (oder
-gruppen) substituiert sind und in denen der Alkylsubstituent (oder die -substituenten) insgesamt mindestens etwa 8, vorzugsweise
aber nicht mehr als etwa 22 Kohlenstoffatome besitzt (besitzen).
Geeignete Verbindungen sind ferner die Salze von Phenolsulfonsäuren, bei denen es sich um monocyclische wie auch
polycyclisch^, einwertige wie auch mehrwertige Säuren handeln kann, die vorzugsweise ebenfalls Alkyl und/oder Arylsubstituenten
tragen. Erwähnt seien die öllöslichen Salze von Kresolsulfonsäuren, Xylenolsulfonsäuren, Naphtholsulfonsäuren, Catecholsulfonsäuren
und andere. Geeignet sind auch die Salze von Sulfonsäuren vollständig oder partiell hydrierter aromatischer
Verbindungen, beispielsweise von Tetrahydronaphthalinsulfonsäure,
Besonders bevorzugt aber wegen ihrer bequemen Zugänglichkeit sind die Salze von Erdölsulfonsäuren, besonders derjenigen
Säuren, die erhalten werden durch Sulfurierung verschiedener

Kohlenwasserstoff-Fraktionen wie Schmierölfraktionen und Extrakten,
die reich an Aromaten sind und erhalten werden durch Extraktion von Kohlenwasserstoffen mit einem selektiven Lösungsmittel,
wobei die Extrakte nach Belieben vor der Sulfurierung
durch Umsetzung mit Olefinen oder AlkylChloriden mit Hilfe eines
Alkylierungskatalysators alkyliert werden können; ferner organische Polysulfonsäuren wie Benzoldisulfonsäure, die alkyliert
sein können oder nicht und andere. Bevorzugte Salze der erfindungsgemässen Verwendung sind Salze alkylierter aromatischer
Sulfonsäuren, in denen das (die) Alkylradikal(e) mindestens etwa
8 Kohlenstoffatome, beispielsweise etwa 8 bis etwa 22 Kohlenstoff
atome enthält (enthalten)» Beispiele für diese bevorzugte Gruppe von Ausgagsmaterialien sind die aliphatisch substituierten
cyclischen Sulfonsäuren, in denen der (die) aliphatische(n) Substituent(en)
insgesamt mindestens 12 Kohlenstoffatome enthält (enthalten) wie z.B. die Alkylarylsulfonsäuren, alkylcycloali·
phatischen Sulfonsäuren und alkylheterocyclischen Sulfonsäuren sowie aliphatischen Sulfonsäuren, in denen das (die) aliphatische
(n) Radikale) insgesamt mindestens 12 Kohlenstoffatome enthält
(enthalten). Beispiele für die öllöslichen Sulfonsäuren sind: Erdölsulfonsäuren, Vaselinsulfonsäuren, mono- und polyparaffinsubstituierte
Naphthalinsulfonsäuren, substituierte Sulfonsäuren wie Cetylchlorbenzolsulfonsäuren, Cetylphenolsulfonsäuren und
ähnliche, aliphatische Sulfonsäuren wie Paraffinsulfonsäuren,
ungesättigte Panaffinsulfonsauren, hydroxysubstituierte Pairaffinsulfonsäuren
usw., cycloaliphatische Sulfonsäuren wie Erdöl-Naphthalinsulf onsäuren, Cetylcyclopentylsulfonsäuren, mono- und
polyparaffinsubstituierte Gyclohexylsulfonsäuren und andere

Der Begriff "Erdölsulfonsäuren" soll alle Sulfonsäuren umfassen, die direkt aus Erdölprodukten gewonnen werden.
Sulfonate von Metallen der Gruppe II zur erfindungsgemässen Verwendung
sind beispielsweise die folgenden: die Calcium-, Barium- und Magnesiumsalze von aus Knochenöl gewonnenen Benzolsulfonsäuren,
Calcium-dipolypropenbenzolsulfonat, Barium-dipolypropenbenzolsulfonat,
Mngnesium-dipolypropenbenzolsulfonat, die Calcium-,
Barium- und MagnesiumsalZe von Mahagoni-Erdölsulfonsäuren,
Calcium-triacontylsulfonat, Magnesium-triacontylsulfonat,. Calciumlaurylsulfonat,
Barium-laurylsulfonat, Magnesium-laurylsulfonat
usw.
Die lipophilen, nichtionischen, grenzflächenaktiven Agenzien
umfassen solche, die im allgemeinen als "aschefreie Detergenzien11
bezeichnet werden. Vorzugsweise haben die nichtionischen Ober—
flächen-Behandlungsmittel einen HLB-Faktor (hydrophil-lipophiles
Gleichgewicht) unter etwa 7 und vorzugsweise unter etwa 5·
Eine Hauptgruppe der lipophilen, nichtionischen, grenzflächenaktiven
Stoffe bilden die N-substituierten Alkenylsuccinimide, die aus Alkenylbernsteinsäure oder -bernsteinsäureanhydrid und
Alkylenpolyaminen hergestellt werden können. Diese Verbindungen
entsprechen im allgemeinen der Formel

Die N-substituierten Alkenylsuccinimide können durch Umsetzung von Maleinsäureanhydrid mit einem Olefinkohlenwasserstoff und
Reaktion des erhaltenen Alkenylbernsteinsäureanhydrids mit dem
Alkylenpolyamin hergestellt werden. Das MR"-Radikal der obigen
Formel, das heißt das Alkenylradikal stammt aus einem Olefin mit 2 bis 5 Kohlenstoffatomen. Das Alkenylradikal wird also
durch Polymerisation eines Olefins mit 2 bis 5 Kohlenstoffatomen
erhalten, bei der ein Kohlenwasserstoff gebildet wird, dessen Molekulargewicht bei etwa 400 bis 3OOO liegt. Geeignete Olefine
sind beispielsweise Äthylen, Propylen, 1-Buten, 2-Buten, Iso-buten,
und deren Geraische, Da die Methoden der Olefinpolymerisation zur Bildung der Polymeren unwesentlich sind für die hier beschriebenen
Verbindungen, kann nach jedem der zahlreichen Verfahren gearbeitet werden, die für diesen Prozess zur Verfügung

Die zur Herstellung der Succinimide verwendeten Alkylenamine
besitzen die Formel

bedeuten und das Alkylenradikal AIk1 vorzugsweise ein niederes
Radikal mit weniger als 8 Kohlenstoffatomen ist. Die Alkylenamine sind in der Hauptsache Methylenamine„ Äthylenamine, Butylenamine,
Propylenamine, Pentylenamine, Hexylenamine, Heptylenamine, Octylenamine,
andere Polymethylenamine sowie cyclische Amine und höhere
Homologe dieser Amine wie Piperazine und aminoalkylsubstituierte Piperazine. Beispiele sind im einzelnen: Äthylendiamin, Triäthylentetsamin,
Propylendiamine, De came thyl endiamin, Octamethylendiamin,
Di(heptamethylen)triamin, Tripropylentetramin, Tetraäthylenpentamin,
Trim ethyl endiamin, Pentaäthylenhexamin, Di(trimethylen)-triamin,
2-Heptyl-3-(2-aminopropyl)imidazolin, 4-Methyl-imidazolin,
l,3-Bis-(2-aminoäthyl)imidazolin, Pyrimidin, 1-(2~Aminopropyl)
piperazin, l,4-Bis-(2-aminoäthyl)piperazin und 2-Methyl-l-(2-aminobutyl)piperazin.
Höhere Homologe, die erhalten werden können durch Kondensation von zwei oder mehreren der oben angeführten
Alkylenamine, sind ebenfalls brauchbar.

verwendet werden, sind Verbindungen, in denen Pentaerythrit mit einem -Polyolefin und Maleinsäureanhydrid oder mit einem Polyolefin
und einem Phosphorsulfid kombiniert ist· Die Polyolefine
sind Polymere von monomeren Olefinen mit 2 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen wie Polyäthylen, Polypropylen, Polybuten, Polyisobutylen und
andere· Diese Olefine enthalten im allgemeinen insgesamt 20 bis 25O Kohlenstoffatome und vorzugsweise 30 bis I50 Kohlenstoffatome.
Als Phosphorsulfide verwendet werden PpS„, P9S1,, P. S7,
PjS und verwandte Verbindungen» Von diesen ist PpS„ (Phosphorpentasulfid)
wegen seiner leichten Zugänglichkeit bevorzugt.
Andere nichtionische Emulgatoren, die verwendet werden können, sind Polymethacrylate und Copolymere von Polymethacrylat oder
Polyacrylat mit Vinylpyrrolidon, Acrylimid oder Methacrylimid.
Das Dispergensgemisch von lipophilen, grenzflächenaktiven Agenzien
liegt im allgemeinen in einer Menge von etwa 0,25 bis 5» gewöhnlich
etwa 0,5 bis 3 Gewichtsprozent der Mischung vor. Die im

Additive
Weitere Stoffe können als Additive in der erfindungsgemässen
Mischung zugegen sein. Diese Additive können augesetzt werden,
um einige Eigenschaften zu verbessern, die dem Schmiermittel
durch das Natriumborat verliehen werden, oder um andere erwünschte
Eigenschaften zu erzielen. Zu den Additiven gehören Rostschutzmittel,
Antioxidantien, Oilinessmittel, Schqitninhibitoren,
Mittel, die den Viskositätsindex verbessern oder den Stockpunkt erniedrigen usw. Gewohnlich beträgt die Menge der Additive etwa
0,01 bis 5» vorzugsweise etwa 0,1 bis 2 Gewichtsprozent bezogen auf die Gesamtmischung. Der Zusatz eines Schaumdämpfungsmittels
kann ebenfalls vorteilhaft sein«, Die erforderliche Menge beträgt im allgemeinen etwa 0,5 bis 50 ppm bezogen auf die Gesamtmischung.
Die erfindungsgemässen Mischungen werden durch Dehydratisierung
der Wasser-öl-Jimulsion einer wässrigen feösung von Natriymborat
hergestellt, . um die gewünschte Dispersion des
hydratisieren Natriumborats in dem Öl zu Das Verfahren

wird in der v/ei^e .-'.us ge führt, dass Natriumborat, Wasser und
das gewünschte Emulgatorgemisch in das indifferente, nichtpolare
Öl eingetragen werden, worauf lebhaft gerührt wird, um eine Dispersion des Wassers in dem 01 zu erzeugen, und dass anschliessend
r-olange auf eine geeignete Temperatur erwärmt wird, bis die
dehydratisierung des N.itriumborats im gewünschten Masse erreicht
ist. Das Borat kann dem Öl bequem in Form einer wässrigen Lösung zugesetzt \verden.
Die Temperatur, auf die die Emulsion erwärmt wird, beträgt im allgemeinen mindestens 120 C, gewöhnlich mindestens 135 Co Es
kann aber auch bei einer Temperatur bis zu 230 C gearbeitet werden,
jedoch empfiehlt es sicH^,nicht über 175 C hinauszugehen.
Bei vermindertem Druck kann bei niedrigeren Temperaturen gearbeitet werden. Gewöhnlich wird der Prozess aber bei Atmosphärendruck
und bei den angegebenen Temperaturen durchgeführte
Die Reaktionszeit hängt von dem Grad der Entwässerung, der vorhandenen
Wassermenge und der Temperatur ab. Die Zeit ist nicht
kritisch und es wird meistens durch die erwähnten Variablen bestimmt,
wie lange erwärmt werden muss. Das anfänglich vorhandene
Wasser soll zum Lösen des N triumborats ausreichen, eiber es soll
nicht mit . oviel Wasser gearbeitet werden, dass sich die Dehydratisierung
schwierig gestaltet.
Die folgenden Daten verdeutlichen die unerwartete Überlegenheit der erfindungsgemässen Mischungen gegenüber den bisher bekannten
Produkten, Die Angaben der Tabelle betreffen die EP-Eigenschaften
und die Wasserverträglichkeit der erfindungsgemässen Mischungen.
Für den in der Tabelle beschriebenen Test wurden alle Proben in

der Weise hergestellt, dass eine wässrige Lösung von Natriumborat in dem Paraffirikohlenwasserstoff (SAE 90) mit Hilfe des in der
Tabelle angegebenen Dxspergierungsmittels oder Dispergensgemisches
diepergiert wurde. In den meisten Fällen war eine geringe
Menge Silikon als Schaumdämpfungsmittel zugegen. Das Gemisch wurde bei der angegebenen Temperatur dehydratisiert, bis ein Wassergehalt
von etwa 1,5 bis 2,5 Mol pro Mol Borat erreicht war0
Die Neigung des Testgemisches zur Kristallisation wurde mittels eines von zwei zur Verfügung stehenden Tests bestimmt. Bei dem
ersten Test werden 10 Prozent Wasser einem Öl beigemischt, das 5 Gewichtsprozent festes Borat enthält, undoes wird solange auf
150 C erwärmt, bis nur noch 2 Prozent Wasser in dem Öl zurückgeblieben
sind. Die teilweise dehydratisierte Lösung wird dann
täglich auf Menge und Härte eventuell gebildeter Abscheidungen
überprüfte Es kann auch eine modifizierte Form des "Coordinating Research Counsel L-33 Tests" benutzt werden. Bei diesem
Test werden 1,3 1 (2 /2 pints) des zu testenden Schmiermittels in ein auf einem Prüfstand montiertes Kraftfahrzeugdifferential
eingebraqfc und es wird Wasser zugesetzte Das Getriebe wird dann in Gang gesetzt, wobei es erwärmt wird und eins chli es send wird β-β-weiter
erwärmt, ohne dass es in Betrieb ist. Bei dem hier angewandten modifizierten Test wird Wasser in einer Menge von etwa
100 craJ zugesetzt (anstatt 28,3 cmJ) und dir Differentialzusammenbau
wird während des Erhitzens ständig in Gang gehalten. Da bei
diesen beiden Tests für die Zwecke der Erfindung vergleichbare
Ergebnisse erzielt werden, ist in der Tabelle keine Angabe darüber
enthalten, welcher Test imJ Jeweiligen Fall benutzt wurde,
um Auskünfte über die Kristallisation zu gewinnen.

Die EP-Eigenschaften der erfindungsgemässen Mischungen werden
bestimmt, indem die Mischungen als Test-Schmiermittel in dem bekannten
"Vier-Kugel"-Test benutzt werden. Dieser Test ist bei Boner, Seite 222-224 beschrieben» Da?ei Stahlkugeln von 12,7 nun,
wie ie gewöhnlich in Kugellagern verwendet werden, werden in einen Stahlbecher eingesetzt und festgeklemmt. Eine vierte Kugel
gleicher Art wird am Ende einer Walze befestigt, die sich um ihre Vertikäkchse dreht. Die Kugeln werden in das zu prüfende Schmiermittel
eingetaucht, und die vierte Kugel wird unter einem bestimmten Druck gegen die drei anderen gepresst. Die vierte Kugel
wird dann während einer bestimmten Zeit mit bestimmter Geschwindigkeit gedreht. Nach Ablauf der Zeit wird der Durchmesser der
Abnutzungskalotten auf den drei festen Kugeln gemessen und die
erhaltenen Wertewerden gemittelt« Die mittlere Gröase der Abnutzungskalotten
wird als Versuchsergebnis aufgetragen. Je kleiner dieser Durchschnittswert ist, desto besser sind die EP-Eigenschaften
des geprüften Schmiermittel!· XJm als befriedigendes EP-Schmieröl angesehen zu werden, darf der im Vier-Kugel-Test
ermittelte Wert nicht grosser als 0,5 na und vorzugsweise nicht
grosser als 0,45 mm sein·

Die Angaben in der Tabelle steigen deutlich, dass bei Verwendung eines Dispergenstyps allein die vorzüglichen wasserbeständigen
Schmiermittel nicht erhalten werden können· Wenn nur der eine Tjtp verwendet wird, neigt das Schmiermittel entweder zur Kristallisation
oder es ist nicht haltbar genug, um im Vier-Kugel-Test zu bestehen« Nur bei synergetischer Kombination der beiden
Dispergensmit'teltypen können die hervorragenden borathaltigen Schmiermittel gemäss der Erfindung hergestellt werden.
Die erfindungsgemässen Mischungen eignen sich auch als Sprühmittel·
Xn einem derartigen System wird das Schmiermittel in einem Gerät zur Nebelerzeugung zerstäubt und mittels eines Luftstroms
durch die Rohre geführt· Die Schmieröltröpfchen vereinigen
sivh und sammeln sich an der zu schmierenden Stelle· Diese
Systeme ermöglichen die gleichzeitige Schmierung mehrerer voneinander
entfernter und schwer zugänglicher Punkte von eimern zentralen Schmierölbehälter aus·
Damit ein Schmiermittel sich zur Verwendung als Sprühsystem eignet,
muss es sich nicht nur leicht zerstäuben lassen (mit oder ohne Erwärmung), sondern die Tröpfchen müssen sich auch vereinigen
und an dem zu schmierenden Punkt sammeln. Schmieröle, die
in Nebelform verharren und sich an dem zu schmierenden Punkt in
die Atmosphäre verteilen, werden ale "Streunebel" bezeichnet.
Streunebel sind unerwünscht, nicht nur, weil das Schmiermittel ungenutzt bleibt und vergeudet wird, sondern auch, weil sie
die Luft verunreinigen und einen schädlichen Einfluss auf die Gesundheit der Arbeiter haben· Die erfindungsgemässen Schmiermittel
verhindern die Bildung von"Streunebel11 in wirksamer Weise.

Die erfindungsgemässen Mischlingen besitzen auch ausgezeichnete
Eigenschaften, -wenn ale in Druckluftwerkzeugen benutzt werden«
Diese Werkaeuge werden durch Einspritzen eines zerstäubten Schmiermittels in den einströmenden Luftstrom der Druckluftvorriehtung
geschmiert· Das Schmieröl gelangt mit den verschiedenen
Innenteilen des Werktags in Berührung und bildet einen
zusammenhängenden Schutzfilm auf den freiliegenden Teilen· Wann]'die Temperatur der komprimierten Luft, durch die die Vorrichtung
betätigt wird) die autogene iSntzündungstemperatur des
vernebelten Öls überschreitet, so kommt es zur Entzündung und
spontanen Verbrennung. Das führt nicht nur zu einem starken
Druckanstieg, sondern bewirkt auch eine erhebliche Erhöhung der Innentemperaturen. Diese wiederum führen zu einem Verlust
an Schutzfilm und zum Festfressen der Metallteile. Bei Verwendung der erfindungsgemässen Mischungen werden derartige Verbrennungen
stark eingeschränkt und unter normalen Arbeitsbedingungen
vielfach ganz ausgeschaltet·
Die Vorzüge der erfindungsgemäsaen Schmiermittel können in
jedem Schmierung·eyetem ausgenutzt werden, wo hohe Drücke oder
Belastungen auftreten* Beispiele sind die Sammelgetriebe in
XraftfahrζeuggetKleben und Getriebedifferentialen, hochbelastete
Lager, Druckluftwerkzeuge wie? Bohrhammer, Ausrücker, Druekluftbohrer,
Tiefbohrer usw., Gaskompressoren, hydraulische
Anlagen, in denen extreme Drücke auftreten und Einrichtungen

- Patentansprüche1# Schmiermittel, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es ein Ql von geeigneter Viskosität enthält, in dem 1 bis 60 Gewichtsprozent bezogen auf die Gesamtmischung amorpher Partikeln von weniger als 1 Mikron Grosse hydratisiertes Natriumborat mit 0,5 bis 4 Hydratwasser dispergiert sind, wobei die Dispersion des Borats in dem Öl mit Hilfe eines Dispergensgemisches hergestellt worden ist, das aus 40 bis 99»9 Gewichtsprozent eines lipophilen, anionischen, grenzflächenaktiven Agens , das ein Metall der Gruppe II und Schwefel enthält, und 0,1 bis 60 GewichtsproaEent eines lipophilen, nichtionischen, grenzflächenaktiven Agens besteht.2. Mischung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Borat in einer Konzentration von 1 bis 25 Gewichtsprozent und das Disρergensgemisch in einer Konzentration von 0,5 bis 3 Gewichtsprozent vorliegt.3· Mischung nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Borat in einer Konzentration von 5 bis 15 Gewichtsprozent und das Dispergensgemisch in einer Konzentration von 0,5 bis 3 Gewichtsprozent vorliegt.k. Mischung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sie durch Dehydratisierung der Dispersion einer wässrigen Lösung von Natriumborat und dem Dispergensgemisch in dem Schmieröl bei einer Temperatur im Bereich von 12O°-23O°C hergestellt wird.209851/1067ο Mischung nach Anspruch 10, dadurch gokonnzoiclmet, dass siο durch Dehydratisierung bei einer Temperatur im Bereich von l/l3O-175OC hergestellt ,drd.12· Verfahren zum Schmieren eines Getriebes oder Lagers, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass auf die Oberflächen des Getriebes oder Lagers eine Mischung gcmäss einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche aufgebracht wirdo13· Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Schmieröls, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass (l) ein Öl von geeigneter Viskosität, (2) 1 bis 60 Gewichtsprozent Natriumborat bezogen auf das Gewicht des Öls, (3) eine ausreichende Menge Wasser, um das Natriumborat zu lösen und (^i) 0,05 bis 3 Gewichtsprozent eines üispergensgemisches bestehend aus hO bis 99»9 Gewichtsprozent eines lipophilen, anionischen, grenzflächenaktiven Agens, das ein Metall der Gruppe II und Schwefel enthält, und aus 0,1 bis 60 Gewichtsprozent eines lipophilen, nichtionischen, grenzflächenaktiven Agens miteinander vermischt werden,dass das Gemisch lebhaft gerührt wird, um eine stabile Emulsion von Wasser in Öl zu erzeugen und dass das emulgierte Gemisch im wesentlichen bei Atmosphärendruck auf eine Temperatur über 12O°C erwärmt wird, um das freie Wasser aus dem Gemisch zu entfernen.Für: Chevron Research CompanySan Franci/sco, CaI., V.St.A.(Dr.H.J.Wolff) Rechtsanwalt »AD209851 /1067
