技术领域
本发明涉及等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,更具体地说,本发明涉及一种在维持期间检测平均信号电平并根据平均信号电平施加重叠维持脉冲或非重叠维持脉冲来提高放电效率、延长面板使用寿命并降低操作温度的等离子体显示面板的驱动方法。
背景技术
常规等离子体显示面板包括寻址电极线、前介电层和后介电层、扫描电极线、维持电极线、荧光层、障壁以及前基板和后基板之间的氧化镁(MgO)保护层。
寻址电极线以预定模式形成在后基板上。后介电层形成在寻址电极线上。障壁沿着平行于寻址电极线的方向形成在后介电层上。障壁限定每个放电室的放电空间并避免放电室之间的光波干涉。荧光层形成在障壁之间的寻址电极线上的后介电层上。荧光层包括顺序布置的红荧光层、绿荧光层和蓝荧光层。

前面板110和后面板120可被相互粘结并由诸如熔块(未示出)等粘结元件所密封,但不是必须要由粘结元件粘结。当放电室Ce处于真空状态时,前面板110和后面板120可借助由真空所产生的压力而相互粘结。可在放电室Ce中填充包括氙(Xe)、氖(Ne)、氦(He)和氩(Ar)或者它们的混合气体的放电气体,且在混合气体中该放电气体包含约10%的氙(Xe)气。
前基板111和后基板121可以由玻璃制成。前基板111可由具有高能见度的材料制成。由于后基板121不需要传输光,所以后基板121可以从比适用于前基板111的材料范围更宽的材料范围中选择,并且不局限于具有高能见度的材料。更期望具有高反射系数或减少无效功的各种材料。
为了提高等离子体显示面板1的亮度,可以在前基板121或后基板123上形成反射层(未示出),或者可以在后介电层123中包括反射材料,从而使荧光材料发出的可见光有效地向前侧反射。
由于扫描电极线112和维持电极线113的透明电极112b和113b被布置在前基板111的表面上,因此它们必须能够传输由荧光层125发出的可见光。具有优良能见度的透明电极112b和113b可由ITO、SnO2或ZnO制成。由于寻址电极线122可以不考虑能见度而形成,因此寻址电极线122可以由广泛选择的材料制成并可由诸如Ag、Cu和Cr等高导电性材料制成。前保护层116可以形成在前介电层115上。前保护层116用于保护前介电层115并发射二次电子以促进放电。
布置在前基板111和后基板121之间的障壁124可被形成,以协同前基板111和后基板121一起限定放电室Ce。图1示出障壁124将放电室Ce分割成矩阵形。然而,放电室Ce并不局限于矩阵形,而是可以被分割成各种图案,例如,蜂窝图案和△图案。此外,虽然图2示出放电室Ce的横截面为矩形,但是放电室的形状并不局限于矩形。例如,放电室Ce可具有诸如三角形、五角形等多边形、圆形或椭圆形截面。
障壁124可以形成在后介电层123上,并可由包括诸如Pb、B、Si、Al和O之类元素的玻璃制成。可以根据需要将诸如ZrO2、TiO2和Al2O3之类的填充物以及诸如Cr、Cu、Co、Fe和TiO2之类的颜料添加到那儿。障壁124可以保护在其中涂覆荧光层125的空间,抵抗由在前面板110和后面板120之间填充的放电气体的真空度(例如0.5atm)产生的压力,并防止放电室Ce之间的串扰。红、绿和蓝荧光层125可被布置在由障壁124限定的空间中,并且荧光层125可以被障壁124所分割。
荧光层125可通过向后介电层123和障壁124的表面涂敷荧光浆,并在那儿执行干燥过程和烘烤过程而形成,其中将红荧光物质、绿荧光物质和蓝荧光物质中的一种荧光物质、溶剂以及粘结剂混合可形成荧光浆。红荧光物质的实例包括Y(V,P)O4:Eu,绿荧光物质的实例包括ZnSiO4:Mn和YBO3:Tb,而蓝荧光物质的实例包括BAM:Eu。
可在每个荧光层125的整个表面上形成例如MgO的后保护层128。后保护层128防止当在放电室Ce中发生放电时由于放电粒子的碰撞而造成的荧光层的退化,并发射二次电子以提高放电效率。
图3示出图1所示等离子体显示面板的电极布置的示意图。
参见图1至图3,扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn可以彼此平行布置。也就是说,扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn可以布置在前介电层115中。寻址电极线A1、A2、...、Am可以布置成与扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn垂直。放电室Ce可被限定成扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn与寻址电极线A1、A2、...、Am相交的区域。
图4示出体现图1所示等离子体显示面板的驱动方法的驱动装置的框图。
参见图3和4,该等离子体显示面板的驱动装置可以包括图像处理器400、逻辑控制器402、Y驱动器404、寻址驱动器406、X驱动器408和等离子体显示面板1。
图像处理器400接收诸如PC信号、DVD信号、视频信号和电视信号等外部图像信号,将模拟信号转换为数字信号,处理该数字信号并将该处理过的数字信号作为内部图像信号输出。内部图像信号可以包括红(R)、绿(G)和蓝(B)图像数据、时钟信号以及分别具有8位的垂直和水平同步信号。
逻辑控制器402接收来自图像处理器400的内部图像信号,执行γ校正、自动功率控制等,并输出寻址驱动控制信号SA、Y驱动控制信号SY和X驱动控制信号SX。本发明的逻辑控制器402检测来自内部图像信号每单元帧的平均信号电平(ASL)。当该平均信号电平小于预定值时,逻辑控制器402输出驱动控制信号SX和SY,以产生重叠维持脉冲。当该平均信号电平等于或大于预定值时,逻辑控制器402输出驱动控制信号SX和SY,以产生非重叠维持脉冲。
Y驱动器404接收来自逻辑控制器402的Y驱动控制信号SY,并在复位期间(图6中的PR)将具有擦除电压用于初始化放电的擦除脉冲、在寻址期间(图6中的PA)将具有正扫描高电压(图6中的Vsch)和由该正扫描高电压依次变化而成的负扫描低电压(图6中的Vscl)的扫描信号以及在维持期间(图6中的PS)将具有正维持放电电压(图6中的Vs)和接地电压(图6中的Vg)的维持脉冲分别施加至等离子体显示面板1的扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn
寻址驱动器406接收来自逻辑控制器402的寻址驱动控制信号SA,并在寻址期间(图6中的PA)将显示数据信号输出至等离子体显示面板1的寻址电极线,其中显示数据信号将寻址电压(图6中的Va)施加至所选择的放电室。寻址驱动器406在维持期间(图6中的PS)施加短脉冲。该短脉冲的电压可以小于或等于寻址电压(图6中的Va)。
X驱动器408接收来自逻辑控制器402的X驱动控制信号(SX),并将在复位期间PR和寻址期间PA具有偏置电压(图6中的Vb)以及在维持期间具有正维持放电电压Vs和接地电压Vg的维持脉冲施加至等离子体显示面板1的维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn
作为图1所示等离子体显示面板的驱动方法的一个实例,图5示出扫描电极线的寻址-显示分离驱动方法。
参见图3和5,一个单元帧可被分成多个子域,例如8个子域SF1、...、SF8,以在分时系统中显示灰度色标。每个子域SF1、...、SF8可被分成复位期间(未示出)、寻址期间A1、...、A8和维持期间S1、...、S8。
在每个寻址期间A1、...、A8,可将显示数据信号施加至寻址电极线A1、A2、...、Am,并可将相应的扫描脉冲顺序施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn
在每个维持期间S1、...、S8,可将维持脉冲交替施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn。这样,其中在寻址期间A1、...、A8形成壁电荷的放电室就会产生维持放电。
等离子体显示面板的亮度与单元帧中维持脉冲的数量成比例。当构成一幅图像的一帧由八个子域和256个灰度色标所表现时,就可以1、2、4、8、16、32、64和128的比例,将不同数目的维持脉冲分配给这些子域。如果要显示133个灰度色标,则可在SF1、SF3和SF8中对放电室进行寻址并产生维持放电。
分配给子域的维持脉冲数可依据根据自动功率控制的子域的加权值来灵活决定。分配给子域的维持脉冲数可以考虑γ特性或面板特性而进行各种变化。例如,分配给SF4的灰度色标等级可由8降至6,而且分配给SF6的灰度色标等级可由32上升至34。构成一帧的子域数可根据设计规格而进行各种改变。
图6示出用于驱动图1所示等离子体显示面板的驱动信号的时序图。图7示出在图6的维持期间的重叠维持脉冲的详细时序图。图8示出在图6的维持期间的非重叠维持脉冲的详细时序图。
如上所述,子域SF具有复位期间PR、寻址期间PA和维持期间PS。
在复位期间PR,可以首先将接地电压Vg施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2...、Yn。接着,可将维持放电电压Vs突然施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn,然后可以施加具有上升电压Vset的上升斜坡信号,使其达到最大电压Vset+Vs。由于施加该具有非突变斜率的上升斜坡信号,因而产生弱放电。由于该弱放电,而在扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn附近积聚负电荷。再接着,扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn突然下降至维持放电电压Vs。然后,在那儿施加下降斜坡信号,使其达到最低下降电压Vnf。由于将该具有非突变斜率的下降斜坡信号施加至扫描电极线,因而产生弱放电。在该扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn附近积聚的负电荷由于该弱放电而被部分发射。结果,在扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn附近仍然保留有适于产生寻址放电的许多负电荷。在将下降斜坡信号施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn的同时,可将偏置电压Vb施加至维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn。在复位期间PR,可将接地电压Vg施加至寻址电极线A1、A2、...、Am
接下来,在寻址期间PA,为了选择显示图像的放电室,可将扫描高电压Vsch施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn,然后可将具有扫描低电压Vscl的扫描脉冲顺序施加至扫描电极线。可以依照扫描脉冲,将具有寻址电压Va的显示数据信号施加至寻址电极线A1、A2、...、Am。可以将偏置电压Vb连续施加至维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn。寻址放电可以由于寻址电压Va、扫描低电压Vscl、因扫描电极Y附近的负电荷而产生的壁电压以及因寻址电极A附近的正电荷而产生的壁电压而执行。当执行完寻址放电后,正电荷被积聚在扫描电极Y附近,而负电荷则被积聚在维持电极X附近。
在维持期间PS,图4所示的逻辑控制器402检测每一单元帧的平均信号电平。当该平均信号电平小于预定值时,以上升斜率达到维持放电电压Vs并以下降斜率达到接地电压Vg的第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲被分别交替施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn。第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲中具有维持放电电压Vs的间隔在时间上彼此重叠。这种第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲被称为重叠维持脉冲。
参见图7详细描述重叠维持脉冲。从t1到t2,施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn的第一维持脉冲可以上升斜率达到维持放电电压Vs。此时,施加至维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn的第二维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg。从t2到t4,第一维持脉冲可连续具有维持放电电压Vs。从t2到t3,第二维持脉冲可连续具有接地电压Vg,并从t3到t4可以上升斜率达到维持放电电压Vs。因此,在t4,第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲具有在时间上彼此重叠的维持放电电压Vs。接下来,从t4到t5,第一维持脉冲可以下降斜率达到接地电压Vg。从t4到t7,第二维持脉冲可具有第一电压Vs。从t5到t6,第一维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg。从t6到t7,第一维持脉冲可以上升斜率达到第一电压Vs。第二维持脉冲从t7到t8以下降斜率达到接地电压Vg,并从t8到t9可具有接地电压Vg。该上升斜率和下降斜率通常被用于能量补充和恢复。
在维持期间PS的重叠波形意味着在施加至扫描电极Y的第一维持脉冲和施加至维持电极X的第二维持脉冲中具有维持放电电压Vs的间隔重叠。本发明并不仅限于第一电压在t4处重叠的情况,也就是说,第一电压可与第二电压重叠更长的时间段。该重叠的间隔越长,第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲的周期就会越短,且该维持脉冲之间的间隔就会越短。也就是说,当放电频率增加时,空间电荷可以在维持放电中更充分地被利用。因此,重叠维持脉冲的放电效率好于非重叠维持脉冲的放电效率。
从壁电荷的角度描述维持放电。当第一维持脉冲具有维持放电电压Vs时,维持放电由于该施加至扫描电极Y的正极性的维持放电电压Vs、施加至维持电极X的接地电压Vg、因积聚在扫描电极Y附近的正电荷而产生的壁电压以及因积聚在维持电极X附近的负电荷而产生的壁电压而执行。同时,负电荷被积聚在扫描电极Y附近,而正电荷被积聚在维持电极X附近。
接下来,当第二维持脉冲具有维持放电电压Vs时,维持放电由于该施加至维持电极X的正极性的维持放电电压Vs、施加至扫描电极Y的接地电压Vg、因积聚在维持电极X附近的正电荷而产生的壁电压以及因积聚在扫描电极Y附近的负电荷而产生的壁电压而被执行。同时,正电荷被积聚在扫描电极Y附近,而负电荷被积聚在维持电极X附近。这些操作可以不断被重复,从而连续执行维持放电。
当由图4所示的逻辑控制器402检测到的平均信号电平大于或等于预定值时,以上升斜率达到维持放电电压Vs以及以下降斜率达到接地电压Vg的第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲被分别交替施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn。在第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲中具有维持放电电压Vs的间隔不会在时间上彼此重叠。这种第一和第二维持脉冲被称为非重叠维持脉冲。
参见图8详细描述非重叠维持脉冲。从ta到tb,施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn的第一维持脉冲可以上升斜率达到维持放电电压Vs,并且施加至维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn的第二维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg。从tb到tc,第一维持脉冲可具有维持放电电压Vs,并且第二维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg。从tc到td,第一维持脉冲可以下降斜率达到接地电压Vg,并且第二维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg。从td到te,第一维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg,并且第二维持脉冲可以上升斜率达到维持放电电压Vs。从tf到tg,第一维持脉冲可具有接地电压Vg,第二维持脉冲可以下降斜率达到接地电压Vg。第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲可通过重复上述操作而被施加至扫描电极线Y1、Y2、...、Yn和维持电极线X1、X2、...、Xn。上升斜率和下降斜率通常用作能量补充和恢复。
当施加非重叠维持脉冲时,维持放电的周期延长,而维持放电的频率下降。因此,非重叠维持脉冲的放电效率小于重叠维持脉冲的放电效率。然而,当存在大量维持脉冲时,重叠维持脉冲的使用会导致温度增加和适用寿命缩短。
如上所述,本发明具有以下优点。
在本发明中,检测每单元帧的平均信号电平(ASL)。当该平均信号电平小于预定值时,维持脉冲的数量较少。因此,重叠维持脉冲不会显著升高温度,而会提高放电效率和亮度。相反,当平均信号电平大于或等于预定值时,维持脉冲的数量增加。因此,非重叠维持脉冲可以抑制温度的升高并延长等离子体显示面板的使用寿命。
因此,根据本发明,可以提高放电效率,抑制温度升高并延长面板的使用寿命。
此处已经公开了本发明的示例性实施例,而且尽管使用了具体的措辞,但它们仅从一般描述意义上被使用和解释,而不以限制为目的。因此,本领域的技术人员应该理解在不背离下面的权利要求所提出的本发明的精神和范围的前提下,可以在形式和细节上进行各种改变。

Claims (13)

1、一种等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,在该等离子体显示面板中,扫描电极线和维持电极线彼此平行,并且寻址电极线被与所述扫描电极线和维持电极线隔开且交叉,该方法包括:
将单元帧在时间上分成多个子域;
为每个子域产生具有复位期间、寻址期间和维持期间的驱动信号;
检测所述单元帧的平均信号电平;
交替地将第一维持脉冲施加至扫描电极线和第二维持脉冲施加至维持电极线,其中每个所述第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲均以上升斜率达到第一电压,并以下降斜率达到接地电压;和
按照所述单元帧的平均信号电平控制交替施加的时序。
2、如权利要求1所述的驱动方法,其中,当所述平均信号电平小于预定值时,控制所述时序包括在所述第一维持脉冲和所述第二维持脉冲中同时具有所述第一电压。
3、如权利要求2所述的驱动方法,其中,当所述平均信号电平等于或大于所述预定值时,控制所述时序包括在所述第一维持脉冲和所述第二维持脉冲中不同时具有所述第一电压。
4、如权利要求1所述的驱动方法,进一步包括,在复位期间:
将维持放电电压施加至扫描电极线;
将上升电压施加至扫描电极线;
将下降斜坡信号施加至扫描电极线,以达到最低下降电压;和
在施加该下降斜坡信号的过程中,将偏置电压施加至维持电极线。
5、如权利要求4所述的驱动方法,其中施加所述下降斜坡信号包括:突然下降至所述维持放电电压,并随后逐渐从所述维持放电电压下降至所述最低下降电压。
6、如权利要求5所述的驱动方法,进一步包括在突然下降之后,延迟逐渐下降。
7、如权利要求4所述的驱动方法,其中施加所述维持放电电压包括突然将所述维持放电电压施加至扫描电极线,并且施加所述上升电压包括将所述上升电压逐渐施加至扫描电极线。
8、如权利要求7所述的驱动方法,进一步包括在突然施加所述维持放电电压之后,延迟逐渐施加所述上升电压。
9、如权利要求4所述的驱动方法,进一步包括,在寻址期间:
顺序将扫描高电压施加至扫描电极线,然后施加扫描低电压;和
将寻址电压施加至所选择放电室的寻址电极线。
10、如权利要求9所述的驱动方法,进一步包括:在寻址期间将所述偏置电压施加至维持电极线。
11、如权利要求9所述的驱动方法,其中所述扫描低电压等于所述最低下降电压。
12、如权利要求1所述的驱动方法,进一步包括,在寻址期间:
顺序将扫描高电压施加至扫描电极线,然后施加扫描低电压;和
将寻址电压施加至所选择放电室的寻址电极线。
13、如权利要求12所述的驱动方法,进一步包括:将偏置电压施加至所述维持电极线。
