最近几年,具有构成大、薄彩色显示板的内置表面放电法AC型等离子显示板的等离子显示器受到关注(例如,请参考特开平5-205642号公报)。
图1至3示出了这种传统表面放电法AC型等离子显示板的部分结构。
如图2所示,等离子显示板(PDP)的结构用于对互相平行设置的正面玻璃基板1与背面玻璃基板4之间的各个像素产生放电。正面玻璃基板1的表面是显示面。正面玻璃基板1的背面侧顺序设置有多个纵向行电极对(X’,Y’)、用于覆盖行电极对(X’,Y’)的电介质层2、以及用于覆盖电介质层2的后面、由MgO(氧化镁)构成的保护层3。如图1所示,各个行电极X’、Y’分别包括:透明电极Xa’、Ya’,由宽ITO或其它透明导电膜构成;和总线电极Xb’和Xb’,由用于增加导电率的窄金属膜构成。在显示屏幕的垂直方向交替设置行电极X’和Y’,它们彼此相对,其间存在放电间隙g’,其中矩阵显示的一条显示线(行)L由各对行电极(X’,Y’)构成。如图3所示,背面玻璃基板4具有:多个列电极D’,排列在与行电极对X’、Y’垂直的方向;带状挡壁5,平行地位于这些列电极D’之间;以及荧光层6,由覆盖挡壁5的侧面以及列电极D’的红(R)、绿(G)和蓝(B)荧光材料形成。如图2所示,在保护层3与荧光层6之间存在其内充入含有氙气的Ne-Xe气体的放电空间S’。如图1所示,各个显示线L被形成为具有一个放电单元C’,该放电单元C’组成单元发光区,其中挡壁5在列电极D’和行电极对(X’,Y’)之间的交叉处分割放电空间S’。
作为用于显示上述表面放电法AC型PDP的图像信息中的中间色调的方法,已知采用子场的灰度级驱动方法。在这种驱动方法中,将一个场显示周期划分为N个子场,而且分配给各个子场与其权重匹配的发光量。此外,通过设置其中对各个放电单元进行发光的子场和其中根据输入图像信号不发生发光的子场,来进行发光驱动。在此,可以显示通过一个场实现的对应于发光总量的中等亮度。
图4示出为了进行驱动在各个子场内对PDP施加的各种驱动脉冲。
如图4所示,各个子场包括批复位周期Rc、地址周期Wc以及保持周期Ic。
在批复位周期Rc,通过在成对的行电极X1’至Xn’与Y1’至Yn’之间同时分别施加复位脉冲RPX、RPY,对所有放电单元同时进行复位放电,因此,在各个放电单元内临时形成预定数量的壁电荷。在后面的地址周期Wc中,对行电极Y1’至Yn’顺序施加扫描脉冲SP,而且依次对一条显示线上的列电极D1’至Dn’施加对应于输入图像信号的各个像素的像素数据脉冲。也就是说,如图4所示,与扫描脉冲SP同步,将由m个像素数据脉冲组成、分别对应于第一至第n条显示线的图像数据脉冲组DP1至DPn顺序施加到列电极D1’至Dm’。仅在对其同时施加扫描脉冲和高压像素数据脉冲的放电单元内发生地址放电(选择擦除放电)。通过该地址放电,在放电单元中形成的壁电荷随之消失。相反,壁电荷却保留在未发生地址放电的放电单元内。在后面的保持周期Ic内,在行电极X1’至Xn’与Y1’至Yn’之间施加保持脉冲IPx、IPy,该行电极X1’至Xn’与Y1’至Yn’一起形成与各个子场的权重相对应的数量的电极对。因此,仅在其中仍保持壁电荷的发光单元内,仅以与施加的保持脉冲IPx、IPy的数量对应的次数重复保持放电。通过进行这种保持放电,包含在放电空间S’内的氙Xe发出波长为147nm的真空紫外线。通过这些真空紫外线,激发在背面基板上形成的红(R)、绿(G)和蓝(B)荧光层,以产生可见光。
在类似于传统表面放电法AC型PDP的显示板中,在表面基板的电介质层上形成的MgO层包括用于保护离子轰击的保护功能以及用于通过提高放电概率实现稳定运行的二次电子放电功能。在其中形成面是阴极的放电过程中,MgO层在二次电子放电特性方面优良,而且可以提高放电概率。然而,因为MgO层还具有紫外线吸收特性,因此不能在背面基板侧(荧光形成面侧)形成。因此,在传统显示板的列电极与扫描电极之间进行选择放电(地址放电)的过程中,位于背面基板侧的列电极侧是阳极,而且位于正面基板侧的扫描电极形成阴极,即,通过对列电极施加正数据脉冲,而对扫描电极施加负扫描脉冲,来产生选择放电。
上述问题被引用作为本发明旨在解决的问题的实例,本发明的目的是提供一种通过提高选择放电的放电概率,可以稳定实现增加选择操作的显示器和显示板驱动方法。
发明内容
本发明的显示器是一种在输入图像信号的基础上根据各个像素的像素数据,将一个场显示周期划分为多个分别具有地址周期和保持周期的子场周期,来显示图像的显示器,该显示器包括:显示板,具有:相互面对的正面基板和背面基板,其间有放电空间;位于正面基板的内表面上的多个行电极对;以及在背面基板的内表面上与行电极对相交的多个列电极,在行电极对与列电极的各个交叉处形成有单元发光区,该单元发光区包括第一放电单元和第二放电单元,在第二放电单元中,在正面基板侧提供了光吸收层,而在背面基板侧提供了二次电子放电材料层;地址装置,用于在地址周期内,对各个行电极对的第一行电极顺序施加正扫描脉冲,同时按照与扫描脉冲相同的定时,依次把对应于像素数据的像素数据脉冲施加给各个列电极,一次一个显示线,以使列电极侧构成阴极,从而在第二放电单元内选择性地发生地址放电;以及保持装置,在保持周期内,对构成行电极对的各个行电极施加保持脉冲,其中,保持装置以负极性对第一行电极施加在保持周期内施加的各保持脉冲中的最后一个保持脉冲。
本发明的显示板驱动方法是一种在输入图像信号的基础上根据各个像素的像素数据来驱动显示板的驱动方法,该显示板具有:相互面对的正面基板和背面基板,其间有放电空间;位于正面基板的内表面上的多个行电极对;以及在背面基板的内表面上与行电极对相交的多个列电极,在行电极对与列电极的各个交叉处形成有单元发光区,该单元发光区包括第一放电单元和第二放电单元,在第二放电单元中,在正面基板侧提供了光吸收层,而在背面基板侧提供了二次电子放电材料层,其中,一个场显示周期由多个分别具有地址周期和保持周期的子场周期构成;在地址周期内,对各个行电极对的第一行电极顺序施加正扫描脉冲,同时按照与扫描脉冲相同的定时,依次把对应于像素数据的像素数据脉冲施加给各个列电极,一次一个显示线,以使列电极侧构成阴极,从而在第二放电单元内选择性地发生地址放电;在保持周期内,对构成行电极对的各个行电极施加保持脉冲;以及以负极性对第一行电极施加在保持周期内施加的各保持脉冲中的最后一个保持脉冲。

具体实施方式
图5示出了构成本发明显示器的等离子显示器的结构。
如图5所示,该等离子显示器包括:PDP 50,即等离子显示板;X电极驱动器51;Y电极驱动器53;地址驱动器55;以及驱动控制电路56。
在PDP 50上形成分别在显示屏幕的垂直方向延伸的带状列电极D1至Dn。此外,在PDP 50上形成分别在显示屏幕的水平方向延伸的带状列电极X1至Xn以及行电极Y1至Yn,以便交替排列或以图5所示的数字顺序排列它们。行电极对,即行电极对(X2,Y2)至行电极对(Xn,Yn)承载PDP 50的第一至第(n-1)条显示线。在显示线与列电极D1至Dm之间的交叉点上形成承载像素的像素单元PC(由图5所示的点划线包围的区域)。即,PDP 50具有属于第一条显示线的像素单元PC1,1至PC1,m,属于第二条显示线的像素单元PC2,1至PC2,m,…以及属于第(n-1)条显示线的像素单元PCn-1,1至PCn-1,m的矩阵型结构。
图6至9提供去除了PDP 50的部分内部结构的示意图。
此外,图6是从显示面侧观看的、PDP 50的平面图。图7示出了沿图6所示线VII-VII的PDP 50的剖视图。图8示出了沿图6所示线VIII-VIII的PDP 50的剖视图。图9示出了沿图6所示线IX-IX的PDP 50的剖视图。
如图6所示,行电极Y分别由在显示屏幕的水平方向延伸的带状总线电极Yb(行电极Y的主体部分)以及多个与总线电极Yb相连的透明电极Ya构成。总线电极Yb由例如黑色金属层薄膜构成。透明电极Ya由ITO或其它透明导电膜构成,而且它们分别排列在总线电极Yb上对应于列电极D的位置。如图6所示,透明电极Ya在垂直于总线电极Yb的方向延伸,所形成的透明电极Ya的第一端和第二端宽。即,将透明电极Ya看作从行电极Y的主体部分凸出的凸出电极。此外,行电极X分别由在显示屏幕的水平方向延伸的带状总线电极Xb(行电极X的主体部分)以及多个与总线电极Xb相连的透明电极Xa构成。总线电极Xb由例如黑色金属膜构成。透明电极Xa由ITO或其它透明导电膜构成,而且全部排列在总线电极Xb上对应于列电极D的位置。如图6所示,透明电极Xa在垂直于总线电极Xb的方向延伸,透明电极Xa的端部具有宽的形状。换句话说,可以将透明电极Xa看作从行电极X的主体部分凸出的凸出电极。如图6所示,通过预定宽度的放电间隙g,互相对着排列透明电极Xa和Ya的加宽部分。换句话说,构成从成对形成的行电极X和Y的主体部分凸出的凸出电极的透明电极Xa和Ya,通过放电间隙g,互相对着排列它们。
如图7所示,在承载PDP的显示面的正面玻璃基板10的背面形成由透明电极Ya和总线电极Yb构成的行电极Y以及由透明电极Xa和总线电极Xb构成的行电极X。此外,还在正面玻璃基板10的背面形成电介质层11以覆盖行电极X和Y。在对应于电介质层11的表面上的受控放电单元C2(以下说明)的位置形成从电介质层11向着背面侧凸出的突起电介质层12。如图6所示,突起电介质层12由含有黑色或暗色色素的带状光吸收层构成,而且所形成的突起电介质层12在显示面的水平方向延伸。突起电介质层12的表面和在其上不形成突起电介质层12的电介质层11的表面由MgO(氧化镁)构成的保护层(未示出)覆盖。在与正面玻璃基板10平行设置的背面基板13上,平行而且间隔预定间隔设置多个在垂直于两个总线电极Xb和Yb的方向(垂直方向)延伸的列电极D。在背面基板13上形成覆盖列电极D的白色列电极保护层(电介质层)14。在列电极保护层14上形成分别由第一横向壁15A、第二横向壁15B以及纵向壁15C构成的挡壁15。在列电极保护层14上对着总线电极Yb的位置形成在显示面的水平方向延伸的第一横向壁15A。在列电极保护层14上对着总线电极Xb的位置形成在显示面的水平方向延伸的第二横向壁15B。在总线电极Xb(Yb)上以等间距排列的各透明电极Xa(Ya)之间的位置处,形成在垂直于各个总线电极Xb(Yb)的方向延伸的纵向壁15C。
此外,如图7所示,在列电极保护层14上对着突起电介质层12的区域(包括纵向壁15C、第一横向壁15A以及第二横向壁15B的侧面)形成二次电子放电材料层30。二次电子放电材料层30是由具有低功函数(例如等于或者小于4.2eV)、和所谓高二次电子放电系数的高度为 的材料构成的层。用于二次电子放电材料层30的材料包括例如:诸如MgO、CaO、SrO以及BaO的碱土金属氧化物;诸如Cs2O、CaF2、MgF2或其它氟化物的碱金属氧化物;TiO2、Y2O3或利用晶体缺陷以及通过掺入杂质升高了其二次电子放电系数的材料、菱形薄膜以及纳米碳管(carbonnanotube)等。同时,如图7所示,在列电极保护层14上,在对着突起电介质层12的区域之外的区域上(包括纵向壁15C、第一横向壁15A以及第二横向壁15B的侧面)形成荧光层16。存在由用于发出红光的红荧光层、用于发出绿光的绿荧光层以及用于发出蓝光的蓝荧光层构成的三基色系统作为荧光层16,该三基色系统的分配针对各个像素单元PC决定。在二次电子放电材料层30和荧光层16以及电介质层11之间存在其内包含放电气体的放电空间。如图7和9所示,第一横向壁15A、第二横向壁15B以及纵向壁15C的各自高度不能高到接触到突起电介质层12或电介质层11的表面。因此,如图7所示,在第二横向壁15B与突起电介质层12之间存在可以通过放电气体的间隙r。在第一横向壁15A与突起电介质层12之间,形成在沿着第一横向壁15A的方向延伸并用于防止放电干扰的电介质层17。此外,如图8所示,在沿着纵向壁15C的方向,在纵向壁15C与突起电介质层12之间连续形成电介质层18。
在此,第一横向壁15A和纵向壁15C包围的区域(图6中的点划线包围的区域)是承载像素的像素单元PC。此外,图6和7所示的像素单元PC由第二横向壁15B划分为显示放电单元C1和受控放电单元C2。如图6和7所示,显示放电单元C1分别包括承载显示线的行电极X和Y的行电极对以及荧光层16。同时,受控放电单元C2包括:位于该显示线的显示面之上的承载显示线的行电极对中的行电极Y、承载相邻显示线的行电极对中的行电极X;突起电介质层12和二次电子放电材料层30。此外,如图6所示,在显示放电单元C1内,通过放电间隙g,互相对着排列在行电极X的透明电极Xa的各第一端形成的加宽部分,以及在行电极Y的透明电极Ya的各第一端形成的加宽部分。同时,尽管在透明电极Ya的各另一端形成的加宽部分包括在受控放电单元C2内,但是透明电极X并未包括在其内。
此外,如图7所示,显示面的垂直方向上(图7中的横向方向)互相相邻的各像素单元PC的各放电空间被第一横向壁15A和电介质层17屏蔽。然而,如图7所示,属于同一个像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1和受控放电单元C2的各放电空间通过间隙r连接在一起。此外,如图8所示,尽管在显示面的横向方向互相相邻的各受控放电单元C2的各放电空间被突起电介质层12和电介质层18包围,但是在显示面的横向方向互相相邻的显示放电单元C1的各放电空间互相连接在一起。
因此,在PDP 50上形成的像素单元PC1,1至PCn-1,m由其放电空间互相连接在一起的显示放电单元C1和受控放电单元C2构成。
根据驱动控制电路56提供的定时信号,X电极驱动器51对PDP 50的各个行电极X1、X2、X3、X4、X5、…、Xn-1以及Xn施加各种驱动脉冲。根据驱动控制电路56提供的定时信号,电极驱动器53对PDP 50的各个行电极Y2、Y3、Y4、Y5、…、Yn-1以及Yn施加各种驱动脉冲。根据驱动控制电路56提供的定时信号,地址驱动器55对PDP 50的列电极D1至Dm施加像素数据脉冲。
驱动控制电路56首先将输入的图像信号变换为例如用于表示各个像素的亮度级的8位像素数据,然后,再对该像素数据执行错误扩散处理和抖动(dither)处理。例如,在错误扩散处理过程中,像素数据的前6个有效位是显示数据,而像素数据的后2个有效位是错误数据。此外,在显示数据内还反映了通过附加权重到对应于周围像素的像素数据的各错误数据所产生的数据。通过这样做,利用周围像素伪表示对应于原始像素的后2位的亮度,因此,通过对应少于8位,即6位的显示数据,表示与像素数据的8个有效位相同的亮度灰度级表示是切实可行的。此外,基于该错误扩散处理获得的6位错误扩散处理像素数据进行抖动处理。在抖动处理过程中,互相相邻的多个像素形成单个像素单元和抖动附加像素数据,其中通过分别对与该单个像素单元内的各像素对应的各个错误扩散处理像素数据分配由不同系数值构成的抖动系数,附加该抖动附加像素数据。通过附加这些抖动系数,在看作单个像素单元时,也能够仅利用抖动附加像素数据的前4个有效位表示等效于8位的亮度。
利用错误扩散处理过程和抖动处理过程,驱动控制电路56将8位像素数据变换为4位多色调像素数据PD,并根据图10所示数据变换表,将该多色调像素数据PD变换为15位像素驱动数据GD。因此,将可以利用8位表示256个灰度级的像素数据被全部变换为由16种模式构成的15位像素驱动数据GD。接着,通过利用对应于一个屏幕的各个像素驱动数据GD1,1至GD(n-1),m的等位列(equal bit column)分割该像素驱动数据GD1,1至GD(n-1),m,驱动控制电路56获得像素驱动数据位组DB1至DB15。对于各个子场SF1至SF15,以对应于一条显示线(m条显示线)的数量,驱动控制电路56依次将与这些子场对应的像素驱动数据位组DB中的各数据位送到地址驱动器55。
图11示出利用选择擦除寻址进行PDP 50的半色调驱动中的发光驱动序列。
在图11所示的发光驱动序列中,将图像信号中的场划分为15个子场SF1至SF15,并在各个子场内实现地址行程W和发光保持行程I。此外,在首部子场SF1,实现位于地址行程W之前的批复位行程R,而在最后子场SF15中,在发光保持行程I之后立即实现擦除行程E。
图12示出根据图11所示的发光驱动序列,利用批复位行程R、地址行程W以及发光保持行程I,由X电极驱动器51和Y电极驱动器53对PDP 50施加的各种驱动脉冲。此外,图12提供其中仅去除了首部子场SF1和后面的子场SF2的示意图。
首先,在批复位行程R中,Y电极驱动器53产生其后沿变化比后续说明的保持脉冲的后沿变化平缓的负复位脉冲RPY,然后,同时将该负复位脉冲RPY施加到PDP 50的各行电极Y2至Yn。此外,利用与该复位脉冲RPY的时间同样的时间,X电极驱动器51产生正复位脉冲RPX,并同时将该正复位脉冲RPX施加到PDP 50的各行电极X1至Xn。同时,地址驱动器55产生正复位脉冲RPD,并同时将该正复位脉冲RPD施加到PDP 50的列电极D1至Dm。根据这样施加的复位脉冲RPD、RPY以及RPX,在PDP 50的所有像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2的列电极D与行电极Y之间发生复位放电(白放电),并且因此在这些受控放电单元C2内形成壁电荷。此外,通过这样施加复位脉冲RPD、RPY以及RPX,相对于行电极X和Y,列电极D侧为阳极。此外,通过间隙r,复位放电向显示放电单元C1转移,如图7所示,从而在显示放电单元C1的行电极Y与X之间产生放电。通过这种放电转移,在所有图像单元PC的显示放电单元C1内形成壁电荷。
如上所述,在基于选择擦除寻址过程的批复位行程R中,壁电荷在PDP 50的所有像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内形成,并且在发光单元模式下,初始化所有这些像素单元PC。
接着,在地址行程W中,Y电极驱动器53对所有行电极Y2至Yn施加正电压V1,同时对行电极Y2至Yn顺序施加具有正电压V2(V2>V1)的扫描脉冲SP。同时,X电极驱动器51将行电极X1至Xn设置为0V。地址驱动器55将对应于子场SF1的像素驱动数据位组DB1内的数据位变换为具有对应于各个数据位的逻辑电平的脉冲电压的像素数据脉冲DP。例如,地址驱动器55将逻辑电平0像素驱动数据位变换为正高电压像素数据脉冲DP,而将逻辑电平1像素驱动数据位变换为低压(0V)像素数据脉冲DP。此外,与扫描脉冲SP的施加时间同步,将该像素数据脉冲DP依次施加到对应于一条显示线的(m)列电极D1至Dm。换句话说,地址驱动器55首先将由对应于第一显示线的m个像素数据脉冲DP构成的像素数据脉冲组DP1施加到列电极D1至Dm,然后,将由对应于第二显示线的m个像素数据脉冲DP构成的像素数据脉冲组DP2施加到列电极D1至Dm。在对其同时施加了具有正电压V2的扫描脉冲SP和低压(0V)像素数据脉冲DP的像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2内的列电极D与行电极Y之间产生擦除地址放电。此外,伴随擦除地址放电的放电通过图7所示的间隙r向显示放电单元C1转移,从而在显示放电单元C1的行电极Y与X之间产生放电。通过使放电从受控放电单元C2转移到显示放电单元C1,如上所述,在显示放电单元C1内形成的壁电荷消失。同时,尽管施加了扫描脉冲SP,但是在对其施加了高压像素数据脉冲DP的像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2内,不产生如上所述的擦除地址放电。因此,因为未发生如上所述的放电从受控放电单元C2转移到显示放电单元C1,所以显示放电单元C1内的壁电荷的形成状态仍保留存在状态。换句话说,当在显示放电单元C1内存在壁电荷时,该状态保持不变,而在不存在壁电荷时,保持该壁电荷的未形成状态。
因此,在基于选择擦除寻址的地址行程W中,根据对应于子场的像素驱动数据位组的数据位,在像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2内选择性地产生擦除地址放电,从而擦除壁电荷。因此,将其中保留壁电荷的像素单元PC设置为发光单元模式,而将擦除了其中的壁电荷的像素单元PC设置为不发光单元模式。
接着,在保持行程I中,X电极驱动器51重复对行电极X1至Xn施加负保持脉冲IPX,而Y电极驱动器53重复对行电极Y2至Yn施加负保持脉冲IPY。对行电极X1至Xn和行电极Y2至Yn交替施加保持脉冲。重复次数等于分配到保持行程I所属的子场的次数。在施加保持脉冲IPX或IPY时,在已经被设置为发光单元模式的像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内的透明电极Xa与透明电极Ya之间产生保持放电。图12利用箭头示出保持放电的放电电流的方向。在如图7所示的显示放电单元C1上形成的荧光层16(红荧光层、绿荧光层以及蓝荧光层)被保持放电产生的紫外线激发,从而通过正面玻璃基板10,辐照对应于这些层的荧光色的光。换句话说,伴随该保持放电的发光的重复次数,为分配到保持行程I所属的子场的次数。
通过施加负保持脉冲IPX、IPY,在被设置为发光单元模式的像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内的列电极D侧放电空间内形成负壁电荷。通过对行电极Y2至Yn施加保持脉冲IPY,强制终止各个保持行程I。因为终止保持行程I,所以在行电极Y2至Yn的一侧的放电空间内形成正壁电荷。因此,在该子场的地址行程W结束时,在显示放电单元C1内形成壁电荷状态。
如图12所示,在从子场SF1转移到下一个子场SF2时,立即开始地址行程W。如上所述,当Y电极驱动器53对所有行电极Y2至Yn施加正电压V1时,对行电极Y2至Yn顺序施加具有正电压V2(V2>V1)的扫描脉冲SP。同时,X电极驱动器51将行电极X1至Xn设置为0V。地址驱动器55将对应于子场SF1的像素驱动数据位组DB1内的数据位变换为具有对应于逻辑电平的脉冲电压的像素数据脉冲DP,并与扫描脉冲SP的施加时间同步,像素数据脉冲DP依次被施加到对应于一条显示线的(m)列电极D1至Dm
子场SF1的保持行程I结束时的显示放电单元C1内的壁电荷的形成状态是子场SF1的地址行程W结束时的状态,因此,在开始子场SF2内的地址行程W时,不需要放电从受控放电单元C2转移到显示放电单元C1。因此,在子场SF2的地址行程W内,在对其同时施加了具有正电压V2的扫描脉冲SP和低压(0V)像素数据脉冲DP的像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2内的列电极D与行电极Y之间,产生擦除地址放电。然后,伴随擦除地址放电的放电通过图7所示的间隙r向显示放电单元C1转移,从而在显示放电单元C1的行电极Y与X之间产生放电。通过使放电从子场SF2的地址行程W的受控放电单元C2转移到显示放电单元C1,在子场SF1内形成的壁电荷在显示放电单元C1消失。同时,尽管施加了扫描脉冲SP,但是在对其施加了高压像素数据脉冲DP的像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2内不产生上述擦除地址放电。因此,因为在子场SF2的地址行程W内也不产生放电从受控放电单元C2转移到显示放电单元C1,所以显示放电单元C1内的壁电荷的形成状态仍保持存在状态。换句话说,经过子场SF1的周期后的壁电荷位于显示放电单元C1内,这种状态保持不变,而在不存在壁电荷时,保持该壁电荷的未形成状态。
子场SF2的保持行程(未示出)的操作过程和后续子场的各个行程的操作过程与子场SF1的地址行程和保持行程的操作过程相同。
根据图10中所示的16种像素驱动数据GD,图11和12所示的批复位行程R、地址行程W以及保持行程I的驱动被执行。如图11和12所示根据在子场SF1至SF15内对选择擦除寻址施加的驱动,仅在子场SF1的批复位行程R内提供使像素单元PC从不发光单元模式转换到发光单元模式的机会。因此,在子场SF1至SF15之间,在一个子场内发生擦除地址放电,而一旦将像素单元PC设置为不发光单元模式,则在后续子场中,不能将这些像素单元PC再变换为发光单元模式。因此,根据基于图10中所示的16种像素驱动数据GD的驱动,在各个后续子场内,以匹配要再现的亮度的比例,将像素单元PC设置为发光单元模式。在发生擦除地址放电(实心圆表示的)之前的间隔内,实现在各个子场的保持行程I中跟着的保持放电发光(空心圆表示的)。
根据上述驱动过程,可以实现对应于在一个场周期内发生放电的总次数的亮度。换句话说,根据通过驱动、采用图10所示的第一至第十六灰度级产生的16种发光模式,可以实现对应于16种灰度级的半色调亮度,该16种灰度级与空心圆表示的子场内发生的保持放电总数匹配。
在如上所述,执行基于选择擦除寻址的驱动时,当在地址行程W内产生擦除地址放电时,对行电极Y施加具有正电压V2的扫描脉冲SP,而对列电极D施加低压(0V)像素数据脉冲DP。因为受控放电单元C2内的列电极D的电位比行电极Y的电位低,所以对于行电极Y,在受控放电单元C2内形成的二次电子放电材料层30是阴极。因此,在发生擦除地址放电时,二次电子放电材料层30有效产生二次电子,并且由此在受控放电单元C2内可靠地产生擦除地址放电。
此外,在上述实施例中,以采用N(在该实施例中为15)个子场的对应于(N+1)个灰度级的再现半色调亮度的灰度级驱动为例,并且对其操作进行了说明。然而,该操作过程同样还可以应用于与N个子场中的2N灰度级对应的再现半色调亮度的灰度级驱动。
图13示出构成本发明另一个实施例的等离子显示器的结构。对图5所示的设备的描述是用于其中显示板中承载显示线的行电极X和Y以X、Y、X、Y阵列的方式排列的情况。然而,在图13所示的设备中,使用其中以X、X、Y、Y、X、X、Y、Y阵列的方式排列的显示板。
代替图5所示的PDP 50,图13所示的等离子显示器采用其中行电极X和Y的排列顺序是X、X、Y、Y、X、X、Y、Y的PDP 500,在其它方面,PDP 500与图5所示的PDP 50相同。
PDP 500形成有分别沿显示屏幕的垂直方向延伸的带状列电极D1至Dm。此外,在PDP 500内形成分别沿显示屏幕的水平方向延伸的带状列电极X1至Xn和行电极Y2至Yn,以便交替并按数字顺序排列。各行电极对,即,行电极对(X2,Y2)至行电极对(Xn,Yn)承载PDP 500的第一至第(n-1)显示线。在显示线与列电极D1至Dm的交叉点(图16中的点划线包围的区域)形成承载像素的像素单元PC。即,PDP 50具有属于第一条显示线的像素单元PC1,1至PC1,m、属于第二条显示线的像素单元PC2,1至PC2,m,以及属于第(n-1)条显示线的像素单元PCn-1,1至PCn-1,m的矩阵型阵列。
图14至17提供了去除PDP 500的部分内部结构的示意图。此外,图14示出了从显示面侧观看的结构的平面图。图15示出了沿图14所示线XV-XV观看的剖视图;图16示出了沿线XVI-XVI观看的剖视图;图17示出了沿线XVII-XVII观看的剖视图。在图14至17中,利用与图6至9中的标号相同的标号表示与图6至图9中相同的结构部件。
即,PDP 500形成有矩阵型阵列的像素单元PC,该像素单元PC包括其结构与PDP 50中的放电单元对的结构类似的放电单元对(显示放电单元C1和受控放电单元C2)。然而,与PDP 50不同,对于PDP 500,在屏幕的垂直方向上互相相邻的两个像素单元PC的受控放电单元C2被相邻排列。如图15所示,这些相邻的受控放电单元C2的放电空间被第一横向壁15A和电介质层17屏蔽。
图18示出在根据图10和11所示的驱动序列驱动采用选择擦除寻址的PDP 500时,X电极驱动器51和Y电极驱动器53对PDP 500施加各种驱动脉冲。
在图18中,在批复位行程R、地址行程W以及保持行程I施加的复位脉冲RPX、RPY和RPD以及像素数据脉冲DP、扫描脉冲SP和保持脉冲IPX和IPY与图12所示的相同。即,通过施加各种驱动脉冲产生的放电以及伴随该放电的动作与在图12中描述的相同。然而,图18所示的驱动过程中,在地址行程W中,对X电极X1至Xn施加的是预定正电压,而不是0V。预定正电压是其电平在发生擦除地址放电时,导致通过间隙r向显示放电单元C1转移,并在显示放电单元C1的行电极Y和X之间导致放电的电压。
在保持行程I中,X电极驱动器51对行电极X1至Xn重复施加负保持脉冲IPX,而Y电极驱动器53对行电极Y2至Yn重复施加负保持脉冲IPY。对行电极X1至Xn以及行电极Y2至Yn交替施加保持脉冲。重复次数等于分配到保持行程I所属的子场的次数。在施加保持脉冲IPX或IPY时,在已经被设置为发光单元模式的像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内的透明电极Xa与透明电极Xb之间发生保持放电。在图18中,利用箭头表示保持放电的放电电流的方向。
通过施加负保持脉冲IPX、IPY,在已经被设置为发光单元模式的像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内的列电极D侧放电空间内,形成负壁电荷。通过对行电极Y2至Yn施加保持脉冲IPY,强制终止各个保持行程I。因为终止保持行程I,所以在行电极Y2至Yn侧的放电空间内形成正壁电荷。因此,在显示放电单元C1内形成在子场的地址行程W结束时的壁电荷状态。
图19示出了对图5所示等离子显示器的PDP 50施加的各种驱动脉冲波形的另一个例子。在图19中,与图12所示的各种驱动脉冲波形类似,仅示出部分子场SF1和部分下一个子场SF2。在保持行程I,X电极驱动器51对行电极X1至Xn重复施加正保持脉冲IPX,而Y驱动器53对行电极Y2至Yn重复施加正保持脉冲IPY,并以负极性,仅对行电极Y2至Yn施加保持行程I的最后一个保持脉冲IPY。保持行程I中的保持脉冲IPX和IPY的施加方法与图12所示的负极性保持脉冲的施加方法不同。此外,在图19所示的脉冲施加方法中,对行电极X1至Xn和行电极Y2至Yn交替施加保持脉冲。重复的次数等于分配到保持行程I所属的子场的次数。在施加保持脉冲IPX或IPY时,在被设置为发光单元模式的像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内的透明电极Xa与透明电极Ya之间发生保持放电。图19利用箭头示出保持放电的放电电流的方向。
因为通过施加负保持脉冲IPY终止保持行程I,所以在被设置为发光单元模式的像素单元PC的显示放电单元C1内的列电极D侧的放电空间内,形成负壁电荷,而在行电极Y2至Yn侧的放电空间内,形成正壁电荷。因此,在显示放电单元C1内,形成子场地址行程W结束时的壁电荷状态。
此外,如图19所示,还是在图13所示的等离子显示器情况下,可以实现其中仅以负极性施加给保持行程I的最终保持脉冲IPY,以及以正极性施加到其它保持脉冲IPX和IPY的施加方法。
如上所述,根据本发明,通过提高选择放电的放电概率,可以稳定提高选择操作的速度。

Claims (10)

1.一种显示器,该显示器在输入图像信号的基础上,根据各个像素的像素数据,将一个场显示周期划分为多个分别具有地址周期和保持周期的子场周期,从而显示图像,
该显示器包括:
显示板,具有:相互面对的正面基板和背面基板,其间有放电空间;位于正面基板的内表面上的多个行电极对;以及在背面基板的内表面上与行电极对相交的多个列电极,在行电极对与列电极的各个交叉处形成有单元发光区,该单元发光区包括第一放电单元和第二放电单元,在第二放电单元中,在正面基板侧提供了光吸收层,而在背面基板侧提供了二次电子放电材料层;
地址装置,用于在地址周期内,对各个行电极对的第一行电极顺序施加正扫描脉冲,同时按照与扫描脉冲相同的定时,依次把对应于像素数据的像素数据脉冲施加给各个列电极,一次一个显示线,以使列电极侧构成阴极,从而在第二放电单元内选择性地发生地址放电;以及
保持装置,在保持周期内,对构成行电极对的各个行电极施加保持脉冲,
其中,保持装置以负极性对第一行电极施加在保持周期内施加的各保持脉冲中的最后一个保持脉冲。
2.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中保持装置以负极性把在保持周期中施加的所有保持脉冲施加给所述行电极对。
3.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中通过将第二放电单元内的选择性地址放电延伸到第一放电单元,地址装置将第一放电单元设置为发光单元状态,或者设置为不发光单元状态。
4.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中第一放电单元包括这样一个部分,其中在放电空间内,构成行电极对的第一行电极和第二行电极通过第一放电间隙互相面对,而第二放电单元包括这样一个部分,其中在放电空间内,列电极与行电极对中的第一行电极通过第二放电间隙互相面对。
5.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中:
构成行电极对的第一和第二行电极分别包括:在行方向上延伸的主体部分;以及凸出部分,在列方向上从主体部分凸出,在单元发光区内通过第一放电间隙互相面对;
第一放电单元包括这样一个部分,其中在放电空间内,凸出部分通过第一放电间隙凸出;以及
第二放电单元包括这样一个部分,其中在放电空间内,行电极对的第一行电极的主体部分与列电极通过第二放电间隙互相面对。
6.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中各个单元发光区的第二放电单元的放电空间被相邻单元发光区放电空间和挡壁包围,而在行方向上相邻的各个单元发光区的第一放电单元的放电空间连接在一起。
7.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中仅在第一放电单元内形成通过放电发光的荧光层。
8.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,进一步包括:
复位装置,用于在由地址装置执行地址放电之前,对第一行电极施加复位脉冲,从而在第二放电单元内的第一行电极与列电极之间产生复位放电。
9.根据权利要求1或8所述的显示器,其中与保持脉冲相比,复位脉冲的波形的上升部分或下降部分的电平过渡比较平缓。
10.一种驱动方法,该方法用于在输入图像信号的基础上,根据各个像素的像素数据来驱动显示板,该显示板具有:相互面对的正面基板和背面基板,其间有放电空间;位于正面基板的内表面上的多个行电极对;以及在背面基板的内表面上与行电极对相交的多个列电极,在行电极对与列电极的各个交叉处形成有单元发光区,该单元发光区包括第一放电单元和第二放电单元,在第二放电单元中,在正面基板侧提供了光吸收层,而在背面基板侧提供了二次电子放电材料层,
其中,一个场显示周期由多个分别具有地址周期和保持周期的子场周期构成;
在地址周期内,对各个行电极对的第一行电极顺序施加正扫描脉冲,同时按照与扫描脉冲相同的定时,依次把对应于像素数据的像素数据脉冲施加给各个列电极,一次一个显示线,以使列电极侧构成阴极,从而在第二放电单元内选择性地发生地址放电;
在保持周期内,对构成行电极对的各个行电极施加保持脉冲;以及
以负极性对第一行电极施加在保持周期内施加的各保持脉冲中的最后一个保持脉冲。
