Description

(ModeL) W. OASADY. Wheel Making Machine.
Patented Nov. 23,
WITNESSES 1N VENTUR:
,- ATTORNEYS.
WILLIAM GASADY,
'ATENT OFFICE.
OF MILTON, IOWA.
WHEEL-MAKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,753, dated November 23, 1880.
To all whom c't may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM UASA-DY, of Milton, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved WVheel-Making Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine for fitting and putting together the several parts of a wheel.
The invention consists of felly-boring, spoke tenoning, and spoke-gaging devices combined in one machine and operated as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a plan of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section, on line x 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end elevation of a portion of the device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of thedevice.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A is the frame or bed of the machine. B is amovable headblock resting upon the parallel horizontal timbers a a ot the frame A, and carrying the boring-crank (J, journaled upon it. Secured upon the shank of the boring-crank O is a collar, 0, to which is attached a guide-lever, D, that is fulcrumed on the supporting-rod D, which is attached to the side of the head-block B. By means of this guidelever D the boring-crank can be advanced or retracted at will. In the end of the said boring-crank 0 an ordinary auger, O, for boring fellies can be fixed, or a hollow auger for turning or tenoning the ends of the spokes. This head-block B is provided with a shank, b, in which is a slot, 1), and said shank I) projects downward between the parallel timbers a a, and a wedge, b, driven through the slot b holds the head-block in position. By loosening the said wedge b the said head-block B may be moved longitudinally along the bed-timbers a a, as it may be desired to turn or tenon the ends of long or short spokes.
E is the felly-block, provided with a slotted shank,f, and secured on the frame A in the same manner as is the head-block B. Afelly to be bored is set on the seat f of this block E and against the shoulder f, where said felly is held by the hand-screw F, that passes down through the plate F, which plate is secured on the top E of the said shoulder f.
- Application filed September 15, 1880.
(ModeL) When the spokes of a wheel are to be tenoned this folly-block E is removed.
G is the hub rest or block, provided with an upward-projectin g central pin, G, over which pin G a hub may be set and held in position. This hub-block G has secured to it two slotted plates, gg, that project downward on either side of the end timber, a, and through said timber a and through the slots of the plates 9 9 passes a bolt, 9, on which is a thumb-nut, g. By means of these plates gg, bolt g, and nut g, the said hub-block G may be vertically adjusted and held in position.
H represents a hub set on the pin G, and I I spokes in said hub. on the top of the hub block pin G the gage-arm K is firmly held by a nut, h. In a mortise in the face and outer end of this arm K is inserted the gage L, which is vertically adjustable, and is held in place by the wedge or pin "5. This gage L is shouldered at l, and in its lower and forked end is pivoted a lever, M, the purpose of which lever M is to seize the outer end of a spoke and hold it firmly in position against the shoulder I, while said spoke is being driven into the hub.
By means of the gage L and lever M a spoke can be held at any desired angle when driven into the hub.
Haviu g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. A wheel making machine constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of frame A,head-block B, provided with boringcrank O, telly-block E, provided with plate F and screw F, and adjustable hub-block G, provided with pin G, gage-arm K, gage L, and lever M, as set forth.
2. In a wheel-making machine, the combination, with the frame A, of the adjustable hub-block G, provided with pin G, and slotted plates g g, screw 9, and nut g, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the hub-block G, provided with vertical pin G, of .the gagearm K, adjustable gage L, and lever M, substantially as herein shown, and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM OASADY.
