desktop machine provided with a supply mechanism and positioning a sheet of work The present invention relates to an office machine provided with a mechanism for supplying and positioning a worksheet, this machine possibly being, for example, a typewriter, and comprising a roller and an element. application of the sheet capable of moving to engage with the roller and to move away from the latter,
and an indicating device capable of rotating with the roll to indicate the position of the sheet as a result of the line spacing movement of the roll.
The machine according to the invention is characterized in that said indicating device, which rotates normally with the roller when the line spacing is carried out, is removably connected to the roller, and in that a control device is arranged to become active upon disengagement of said applicator member from the sheet upon insertion of a sheet, in order to prevent rotation of the indicating device when it is in its starting position, the control device automatically returning to its rest position by a new engagement of the application element of the sheet with the roller.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention, as well as a detail of a variant.
Fig. 1 is a partial perspective view of this embodiment.
Figs. 2 to 5 are views, at various scales, of details shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of this embodiment.
Fig. 7 is a view of a detail. shown in fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a partial view ep end of this embodiment.
Fig. 9 is a partial elevational view of a variant.
Fig. 10 is a partial perspective view corresponding to FIG. 9.
The embodiment shown is a typewriter provided with standard parts, arranged in a known manner. This embodiment has a carriage, generally designated A, having a left end plate 1 which, together with a right end plate (not shown) serves to support a roll 2 for supplying a sheet of paper. job. The right end plate (not shown) is provided with a bearing for a shaft 3 (fig. 6) which passes through the roller 2 to mount the latter in rotation on the right end plate.
The left end plate 1 has a side part 4, provided with a bearing 5 for the journaling of a hollow shaft 6. On the inner end of the shaft 6 is mounted, rotatably, the hub 7 d a coupling ring 8 with a cylindrical collar 9 having a grooved inner part 10. The ring 8 normally couples the shaft 6 with the left end of the roller 2 and supports the latter in rotation. The roller 2 is provided with a sleeve 11 fixed to the left end of the roller by screws, one of which is shown at 12.
The sleeve 11 has a reduced diameter end portion 13 which fits over the shaft 6 and can slide smoothly relative to it to keep the roller 2 coaxially aligned with the shaft 6 for rotation of the roller 2 and the sleeve 11 relative to the shaft when the parts are being assembled and to allow movement at the end of the roller 2 relative to the shaft 6 during assembly.
The end portion 13 of the sleeve 11 also carries, for a sliding movement, a coupling disc 14 which is guided in end movement relative to the roller 2 by several pins, one of which is shown at 15, extending and slidable in a bore 16 made in the body of the sleeve 11. The inner end of the pin 15 projects into a larger bore 17, formed in the core of the roller 2.
A spring 18, interposed between the bottom of the bore 17 and a collar fixed to the pin 15, urges the pin and, consequently, the disc 14 towards the left, so as to bring its peripheral ridged face 20 going s' slimming, engaged with the serrated part 10 of the collar 9 of the clutch ring 8. In this way, the clutch ring 8 and the roller 2 are normally coupled in rotation.
The shaft 6 is connected to the coupling disc 14 and thence to the roller 2, so that as the shaft rotates the roller rotates to effect line spacing or line spacing movements. a worksheet in contact with said roller. In the form shown, the shaft is provided with a manually operated button 21, fixed to the shaft 6 by stop screws 21d. The inner end of shaft 6 is provided with an arm 22 having a projection 23 arranged to extend into one of several openings 24 of the coupling disc 14, the arrangement being such that when the The shaft 6 and the arm 22 rotate the disc 14, the sleeve 11 and the roller 2 also rotate.
Normally, the rotation of the shaft 6 and of the roller 2 will be effected, for defined spacings, by a ratchet mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel 25 integral with the hub 7 of the coupling ring 8 and a detent spring. (not shown) which is urged in contact with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 25. The interline movement of the roller 2 can also be effected by a motor device comprising a pawl or a similar element (not shown) capable of cooperate with the ratchet wheel 25.
The line or line spacing mechanism illustrated and described above is provided with means to allow fractional spacings of the roller 2, i.e. movements which are not affected by the ratchet wheel 25. This fractional line spacing mechanism comprises a rod 26 which extends into the bore of the hollow shaft 6 and which is provided with a sleeve 27 on its outer end, arranged to slide in a bore of the hub. 28 of the manual button 21. - The sleeve 27 carries a cheek 29 normally bearing against a shoulder 30 of the hub of the button 21.
A push-button 31 is fixed to the outer end of the rod 26 and it is biased outwardly by a spring 32 interposed between the button 31 and the hub 28 of the button 21, the spring 32 normally maintaining them. parts in their relative position shown in FIG. 6. When the button 31 is pressed inward, causing the rod 26 to move to the right of FIG. 6, the inner or right end of the rod 26 engages a finger 33 fixed on the coupling disc 14 and extending through the bore in the shaft 6.
Continuation of the rightward movement of the rod 26, while it is engaged with the finger 33, moves the coupling disc 14 to the right, so as to disengage its ridged periphery 20 from the ridges 10 at the end. inside the collar 9 of the coupling ring 8. Next, the button 21, shaft 6, sleeve 11 and roller 2 can be rotated fractional amounts of row space, while neck ring 8 can be rotated. and the ratchet wheel 25 are held against any rotation by the trigger urged by a spring (not shown) bearing against the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
The mechanism shown comprises an application element of the worksheet de signed generally by B and comprising a leaf 34 formed of two side arms, one of which is shown at 35, and a front cross member 36, provided with rollers, one of which is represented at 37, arranged to engage with a working sheet W passing around the roller 2 to hold the working sheet against the roller. Each of the arms 35 extends behind the cross member 36 and pivots at its rear end at 35q on the upper end of an arm 35b whose lower end pi votes at 38 on the end plate of the carriage. adjacent 1.
A spring 39, stretched between a stud 40 of the arm 35 and a stud 41 of the end plate 1, normally maintains the mechanism for applying the worksheet in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 8 for which a stop lug 42 of the arm 35b is pressed against the end plate 1.
To facilitate the insertion of a worksheet from the rear, from below and then up onto the front of the roll 2, the slider 36 can be pulled forward to the position shown in lines. dotted lines BI, causing the arm 351) to swing clockwise (fig. 8), so that the spring 39 extending normally behind the pivot 38 , passes beyond the pivot and extends in front of the latter so as to effect an overtaking movement relative to the center and to maintain the crossmember in the adjustment position relatively distant from the roller 2, as indicated in dotted lines in BI. We can then easily pass the worksheet W from the back under the roll 2 and,
going up, between the roller and the rollers 37 of the cross member 36. The cross member 36 can then be pushed backwards to the working position shown in solid lines in FIG. 8, causing the rollers 37 to press the worksheet against the upper part of the roll 2 and bringing the glue sheet tightly to the cylinder to ensure proper supply of the sheet when the roll is rotated. If desired, the crosshead can be tilted upward to the position shown in dotted lines at B2 to allow for control of the strike.
The mechanism shown also comprises a paper table 43 which may be of known construction, comprising an anterior part and inclined downwards 44 adjacent to the roller 2, and a posterior and substantially horizontal part 45 starting from the top of the part 44. The machine further includes a mechanism for supplying and positioning the worksheet. This mechanism comprises a sheet finish indicating device, generally designated C, controlled by the position of the application element of the worksheet B.
The device C comprises an indicator drum 46, with a cylindrical cheek 47, which fits on the collar 9 of the coupling ring 8. The drum 46 has a flange 48, pressed against the flange of the coupling ring 8. by a friction drive transmission washer 49 mounted on the hub 7 of the ring 8 and bearing against the inner face of the ratchet wheel 25 and the outer face of the flange 48 of the indicator drum 46. Normally, the rotation of the coupling ring 8 and the ratchet wheel 25 which results from the rotation of the roller 2 drives, via the washer 49, the indicator drum 46 so as to make the latter rotate in correspondence with the roller 2 .
The drum 46 is provided with graduations 50 which can be observed, with respect to a lower edge 51 of a reference plate 52, fixed to the leaf 34. The arrangement is such that when the indicator drum has been set to a position of determined start, and when the worksheet W has been put in the correct position with respect to the indicator drum 46, the subsequent rotation of the roller 2 and the drum 46 will bring up the graduations 50 of the drum, read in relation to the plate. Reference 52, to provide an indication of the amount of space still remaining free for typing before the lower edge of the worksheet W reaches the striking line.
A control device associated with the positioning of the flapper 34 is arranged to determine the initial or starting position of the indicator drum 46 and to put the indicator device temporarily out of service in order to allow the operator to rotate the roller 2. and to put the worksheet W in position, this in order to ensure a correct indication of the approach of the lower edge of the sheet W, when the graduations 50 of the drum subsequently pass in front of the reference plate 52 in progress. typing.
The drum 46 has a circumferential groove 5 designed to receive the spout 54 of a ratchet control device 55 which pivots on a screw of a bracket 57 fixed to a transverse element 57 of the frame of the carriage. As shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, console 57 also carries an interline, anti-repeat cam plate 58, which pivots on the same screw 56 as control pawl 55. Screw 56 passes through cam plate 58, console 57 and control pawl 55, and receives a nut 59. A coiled spring 60 allows the cam plate 58 to swing in a clockwise direction (Figs. 4 and 5).
A spacer sleeve 61 is interposed between the console 57 and the control pawl 55. The control pawl 55 is biased to swing in the clockwise direction (Figs. 4 and 5) by a spring 62 interposed. between the pawl 55 and a stud 63 of the console 57. Normally, when the cross member 36 is in the working position, as shown in FIG. 8, the pawl 55 is held in a high or inactive position, by a cam plate 64 which engages a cam edge 65 of the lower part of the pawl 55, in front of its nose 54. When the pawl is held in its upper position, its beak 54 is released from the bottom of the circumferential groove 53 of the indicator drum 46.
When the cross member 36 is moved in the direction of the arrow a (fig. 2) to its adjustment position shown at BI in fig. 8, the cam plate 64 moves away from the cam edge 65 of the pawl 55, allowing the spring 62 to swing the pawl 55 down to project its beak 54 into the groove 53 of the indicator drum 46. The groove 53 has a notch 66 in which the beak of the pawl 54 is inserted when the drum 46 has been moved to a determined starting position.
In order that, during the typing and line spacing operations, the graduations 50 of the drum 46 indicate the amount of space still available for typing before the end of the worksheet W is reached, the sheet must be working W is placed in position relative to the roller 2 and to the drum 46 when the latter is in its starting position determined by the introduction of the pawl 54 in the notch 66. To facilitate the preliminary positioning of sheet W, the rear end of the horizontal part of the paper table 45 has a cheek 67 at mark 68.
The distance from the mark is such, with respect to the diameter of the roller and to the graduations 50, that, when the indicator drum 46 is in its starting position, determined by the introduction of the pawl nose 54 into the notch 66, and the worksheet W has been brought into position with its lower edge facing, or in contact with the reference mark 68, a subsequent rotation of the roll 2 while being struck operates the indicator drum 46 to indicate the gap which is available for typing on the worksheet.
The initial positioning of the worksheet W with respect to the indicator drum 46, when the latter is in its starting position, can be facilitated by providing a vertical reference cheek against which the lower edge can be pressed at this time. of the worksheet.
But once the worksheet has thus been placed in position relative to the roller 2 and the indicator drum 46, it is advantageous to retract the vertical reference cheek so as not to interfere with the smooth supply of the material. worksheet during line spacing operations or, more particularly, when the roller 2 is turned upside down to retract the worksheet, for example to allow erasing to be effected.
The mechanism may include an element for guiding and positioning a worksheet, comprising a locating member which can be placed in a working position to cooperate with the lower edge of a worksheet or which can be retracted, so as not to interfere with it during the strike. Preferably, the positioning of the guide element can be effected or adjusted by positioning the cross member in its adjustment or working position. An embodiment of this type is shown in FIGS. 9 and 10 in which the rear part 69 of a paper table is provided with an edge 70 folded down, comprising a slot 71. A guide member 72 pivots on a rod 73 mounted on the frame of the carriage.
The guide member 72 has a reference edge portion 74 extending upward. Normally the guide plate 72 is retracted or in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 9, so that the reference edge 74 will be disposed below the paper table 69.
When it is desired to use the marking edge portion 74 to place a worksheet in position, the guide arm 72 is tilted in the direction of clockwise movement (Fig. 9) about its pivot 73. so as to cause the reference edge 74 to protrude upwardly through the slit 71 and above the paper table 69, as indicated by dotted lines in FIG. 9. A device makes it possible to position the guide arm 72 according to the position of the crosspiece for applying the worksheet. As shown in fig. 9, a cross member, generally designated by 75, has an arm 76 which pivots at 77 on a rocker arm 78, itself pivoting on the rod 73.
On the rod 73 also pivots a lever 79 (FIG. 10), comprising a tab 80 extending in a generally horizontal manner across and in front of a tab 81 integral with the arm 78. When the cross member 75 is moved forward, the arm 78 is tilted clockwise (fig. 9 and 10), causing the tab 81 to exert pressure against the tab 80 of the lever 79 and to tilt the latter in the clockwise.
A finger 82 of the lever presses upwards against the lower face of the guide element 72, so as to lift the guide element from the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 9 to the position indicated in dotted lines for which the marker edge 74 is raised and arranged to cooperate with a worksheet when the latter is brought into position relative to the roller 2 and the indicator drum 46. The cross arm 76 is provided with a roller 83 arranged to rest on a fixed track 84 carried by the frame of the carriage.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 8, the leaf application flapper 34 is pulled forward to position BI for the insertion of a worksheet W around the roller 2, between the latter and the rollers 37. The movement towards the 'front of the leaf 34 withdraws the cam plate 64 from its engagement with the cam edge 65 of the control pawl 55 and allows the latter to lower under the action of the spring 62 so that the beak of the pawl 54 bears against the bottom of the groove 53 in the indicator drum 46.
With the working sheet W having been inserted, the roller 2 rotates to advance the sheet and also to drive the indicator drum 46 by the friction drive transmission washer 49 until the nose of the pawl 54 drops into the sheet. 'notch 66 at the bottom of the throat of drum 53, thus immobilizing the drum. Roller 2 is then rotated until the lower edge of the worksheet W is opposite the reference mark 68 on the paper table 45. The flapper 34 will then be returned to its normal position to hold the sheet. working W against the roller 2.
The return movement of the leaf 34 also causes the cam plate 64 to engage with the cam face 65 on the pawl 55 so as to lift the pawl and thus allow the drum 46 to be dragged by friction. when the roller 2 turns. These operations having been carried out, the graduations 50 of the drum, observed with respect to the reference plate 52, will indicate, during the subsequent rotation of the roller 2, the value of the space remaining for the strike before reaching the bottom of worksheet.
When the machine includes the guide device 72 described above and shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, the operations carried out for positioning the worksheet in the initial position will be the same as those described above. But the movement of the bat so much towards its adjustment position acts moreover to move the guide device 72 towards its active position for which the reference mark 74 is arranged above the paper table 69; the movement of the leaf towards its normal or working position after the positioning of the worksheet will cause the guide device 72 to return to its retracted position for which its reference part 74 will be out of the path of the progress of the leaf. the W.
