Les autres moyens alimentateurs en feuil les destinés à faire progresser les feuilles de copie comprennent les éléments suivants : une roue 21, de faible largeur par rapport au cylin dre rotatif, est fixée au centre d'un arbre 22 porté par des roulements disposés dans les flas ques latéraux de la machine ; cet arbre est entraîné par intermittence de la façon suivante un levier 23 s'articule sur un axe fixé dans le flasque latéral 1 de la machine, en 24, de ma nière que son extrémité supérieure porte contre un galet de came 25 porté par la face de gau che de la came 15 ;
Ainsi que le montre la fig. 4, chaque patin à. friction 77 est constitué par une bande de caoutchouc fixée à un support en tôle métalli que emboutie 79 légèrement cambrée vers l'in térieur de manière à posséder l'élasticité néces saire ; ce support comporte, .en outre, une lan guette 80 par laquelle on peut le fixer solide ment au. bord supérieur du guide coulissant 70 .ou 71. _ Chaque taquet de guidage 78 est également porté par un support métallique 82;
Dans ces conditions, l'humidification de la face supérieure de cette feuille de papier commence, à partir d'une marge non humidifiée qui correspond à la dis tance séparant le bord antérieur du tampon humidificateur (en position abaissée) du creux ou génératrice de contact entre les éléments qui constituent le couple imprimeur. Le tour suivant du cylindre achève l'introduction de la feuille de papier dans le couple imprimeur tout en imprimant sur la feuille le texte ou sujet porté par le stencil ou original enroulé autour du cylindre;
Copying machine In alcohol type duplicating machines, where copies are made from a specially prepared carbonless sheet wrapped around a rotating cylinder, the copy sheets must feeding one by one the trough of the printing torque, composed of the aforementioned cylinder and a counter-pressure roller, after having been moistened with a volatile solvent for the ink or poly copy paste :
Machines of this kind are either designed for manual sheet feeding, or equipped with an automatic feeder mechanism by which the sheets are transferred one by one from the stack they form to the hollow of the torque. printing, between the rotating cylinder and the back pressure roller, at the appropriate time, by means operating in synchronism with the rotating cylinder. This feed mechanism is often relatively complicated and constitutes a large fraction of the total cost of the machine.
The present invention relates to a duplicating machine comprising a rotary cylinder and a counter-pressure roller cooperating with said cylinder and forming therewith a printing couple, as well as a mobile humidifier pad automatically actuated during a fraction of the cycle. of the cylinder so as to directly moisten the copy sheets, an automatic feed device located upstream of the humidifier pad in the sheet feed plane in the direction of the printing couple.
This machine is characterized in that this feed device comprises a feed plate comprising means for laterally aligning the sheets, a driving feed wheel of reduced width relative to that of the cylinder and of which the torque. feed is transmitted to the lower surface of the copy sheet, a counter pressure roller of smaller diameter than that of said wheel and able to remain on the sheet,
and means intermittently actuating the feed wheel in synchronism with the cylinder so as to transfer a sheet towards the hollow of the printing neck and to complete the feed movement and to allow the. leading edge of the sheet to be gripped by the printing couple before the humidifier pad is brought into contact with the sheet.
The accompanying drawing represents; by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the object of the invention, as well as a detail of a variant. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of said embodiment. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 relates to said variant.
Fig. 4 is a section on a larger scale, taken in part along the plane IV-IV of FIG. 1 and partly along the plane V-V of fig-l.
The machine shown comprises a flange 1 on the right and a flange 1a on the left which form part of the same frame, the front end or the supply side of the machine being located on the right, looking at FIGS. 1 and 2.
Each side flange 1 and 1 of the machine is made up of a sort of casing in which various bosses have been brought from the foundry forming the bearing surfaces of the axes, intended to receive the bearings of various mobile parts of the machine; however, to simplify the description, only those parts which are necessary for the understanding of the invention will be mentioned.
We can also see, at 2, the periphery of a rotating cylinder whose rotation, during operation of the machine, takes place in the direction of clockwise, while 3 designates a back pressure roller which extends over the entire width of the cylinder and forms the printing couple with the latter. The cylinder dre is provided with a movable blocking device intended to keep wound around the cylinder a stencil or similar original, to be reproduced (not shown).
Details relating to the arrangement of the printing couple and the movable stencil locking device or the like are well known in such machines; it is therefore. no need to describe them here.
A humidifier pad 4, intended to humidify the copy sheet, extends up to a short distance from the printing couple; this tam pon is mounted to pivot about a horizontal axis P and it is controlled by a cam device which will be discussed later.
A removable feed plate 10 extends from the front of the machine and carries an automatically controlled, friction-operated sheet feeder means; this feeder means comprises a friction feed roller 5 mounted on the end 6 of an elbow shaft 7 supported in turn so as to be able to pivot freely around its axis on a sliding carriage 8.
For this purpose, the tree. 7 comprises a finger 7a which engages in a bayonet groove 7b formed in a socket 13, which makes it possible to easily remove the assembly made up of the shaft 7 and the roller 5. The carriage 8 can move the along a guide rail 9 rigidly fixed to the right side of the movable feed plate 10, using studs 11.
The friction feed roller is mounted on the end of the bent shaft, 6 by means of a clutch device consisting of a ratchet device of the freewheel type, so that the feed roller can rotate only in the direction of the needles of a watch (in fig. 1). The feed roller 5 and its freewheel are not shown in detail in the drawing.
The friction feed roller 5 can be made up of any number of rubber disks, mounted on a sleeve which can be threaded on the shaft 6 and made integral with a clutch device already mounted on this shaft 6. The connection between the assembly consisting of the roller 5 and the drive device may be produced in the form of a finger arranged on the device and which engages in a hole in the assembly of the friction feed roller.
A push bar 12 is also mounted on the carriage 8 and the complete assembly, consisting of the carriage, the bent shaft, the friction pullers and the push bar 12, is biased towards its rest position ( in which the drawing shows) by a spring 14, one end of which is fixed to a part of the carriage 8, the other end being fixed to one of the fixed studs 11.
The mechanism of the friction feed roller, described above ,. is actuated by a cam mechanism whose control is synchronized with that of the rotary cylinder and is made up of the following components: a cam 15 is fixed to one end of the cylinder shaft, between the end of this and @ the side flange 1 of the frame of the machine; a doorbell lever 16 is pivotally mounted on a pin 17 fixed in the lateral flange and carries a cam roller 18 intended to follow the contour of this cam 15.
The lower end of the doorbell lever 16 is articulated on a rod 19 which passes through a guide slot 20 formed in the front face of the lateral flange 1; when the machine is at rest, that is to say as shown in the drawing, this rod 19 emerges a short distance from the slot 20 and comes to bear against the bent end of the push bar 12 fixed to the 'assembly of the friction roller described above.
The other sheet feeder means intended to advance the copy sheets comprise the following elements: a wheel 21, of small width compared to the rotary cylinder, is fixed to the center of a shaft 22 carried by bearings arranged in the side flanges of the machine; this shaft is driven intermittently as follows: a lever 23 is articulated on an axis fixed in the lateral flange 1 of the machine, at 24, so that its upper end bears against a cam roller 25 carried by the face left of cam 15;
the lower end of the lever 23 is articulated at 26 on a link 27 which in turn articulates at 28 on another link 29 pivoting around an axis 30 fixed to the side flange 1. The upper end of the lever 29 carries a finger 31 which moves in a mortise 32 formed in a lever 33 associated with the shaft 22 of the wheel 21 by the intermediary of any uni-directional drive device, such as a ratchet or freewheel clutch , for example a freewheel with rams and rollers, so that the wheel can only be driven in an anti-clockwise direction (fig. 1),
the lever 33 being disconnected from the shaft when it moves in the direction of clockwise.
The rim of the wheel 21 carries a tire 34 of rubber or the like capable of exerting some friction drive on the paper; this wheel cooperates with an uncontrolled feed roller 35, carried by the feed plate 10,
so as to consti kill with the wheel 21 a drive or feeder torque. The feed plate itself has a funnel-shaped outlet end formed by an apron 36 made of thin sheet metal arranged transversely between the raised edges 38 and 39 of the plate and fixed to the latter by means of bolts. .
A notch 37 is cut in the anterior edge of the aforementioned apron and the axis of the roller 35 is housed in the bearing surfaces 40 formed in an elastic plate 54 supported in cantilever by the apron 36, using rivets 55. This arrangement allows the roller to bear with slight pressure against the periphery of the wheel 21 when the plate is in the position shown in the drawing. The bottom 41 of the plate is also provided with a notch 42 to allow the wheel 21 to pass through the plate and to come into contact with the roller 35.
A fixed bar 43 disposed opposite the humidifier pad between the two flanges of the frame of the machine, is also provided with a notch 44 of corresponding width, to allow passage of the periphery of the wheel 21. The assembly of the feed plate 10, including its friction roller 5 with native alternating movement and the uncontrolled roller 35 is housed in guides formed in the lateral flanges of the machine, while the front edge of the plate rests on the transverse bar 43 which serves as a fixed paper guide, as shown in fig. 1.
The means provided to ensure the humidification of the copy sheet in synchronism with the movement of the rotary cylinder are as follows: The humidifier pad 4 is housed in a pad housing 56 which is articulated around an axis P and whose l The front end is biased downward by springs (not shown) attached to the machine frame and the pad housing assembly.
A disc-cam 52, fixed near the end of the shaft of the rotary cylinder, opposite to that carrying the cam @ 15, cooperates with a roller. cam 58 fixed to a lever 59 which articulates freely around the axis P already mentioned and which is sol licit upwards by a spring 60 -attached to the frame at 61.
One of the ends 57 of the pad holder housing has a tab 62 (fig. 2) carrying an adjustment screw 63, the end of which facing downwards applies against the lever 59: under the bias of the springs acting on said pad holder housing -; however, the traction produced by the spring 60 is predominant and maintains. normally the case in question in the high position.
This adjustment screw is used to. adjust the position of the pad holder housing relative to the lever 59 and, consequently, the synchronism of the movement of the humidifier pad, as will become clear from the following description.
The following ways are used to keep a stack of sheets in the tray while still allowing feeding. individual - -sheets.
Two sliding paper guides 70, 71 com carry adjustment means making it possible to use papers of different widths. For this purpose, in the bottom 41 of the plate, mortises 72, 73 are provided and each guide has a boss 74 which passes through the corresponding mortise as well as a leaf spring 75, also provided with a similar mortise, this spring being normally kept tensioned against the bottom of the plate by means of a pin 76 which passes through the boss 74. The friction produced by the spring 75 is sufficient to maintain the paper guide in the adjustment position. chosen.
Fixed friction pads 77 keep the sides of the paper stack 50 near its rear end so that the friction feed roller 5 picks up only one sheet at a time. Smooth-faced guide tabs 78 laterally guide the picked up sheet. individually from the stack; these cleats are arranged near. the front end of the paper guides: side 70 and 71..
As shown in fig. 4, each skate to. friction 77 consists of a rubber band fixed to a stamped metal sheet support 79 slightly arched inwardly so as to have the necessary elasticity; this support comprises, .in addition, a lan watch 80 by which it can be securely fixed to the. upper edge of the sliding guide 70. or 71. Each guide tab 78 is also carried by a metal support 82;
but in this case the stopper is made of a material with a smooth or polished surface, for example plastic, so that the stopper ensures the guiding of the sheets, without braking them, when they leave the stack.
The operation of the machine described above is as follows: The stack of copy paper 50 is placed on the platen. and stabilized laterally by the friction pads 77 and the guide cleats 78, while the front edge of the stack is set back from the generator by which the roller 35 is in contact with the wheel 21, the distance between this front edge of the stack and said generator being slightly less than the feed stroke d formed by the translational movement of the feed roller 5.
The friction feed roller 5 rests on the top sheet of the stack and approximately in the center thereof. Starting from the rest position shown in the drawing, the cylinder and the cams turn clockwise, so that the doorbell lever 16 turns, for half a revolution of the cylinder, in a way. to reach the position indicated in phantom, while the rod 19 moves the carriage 8 and the whole of the friction roller against the action of the spring 14 over a distance d indicated in fig. 2, the roller on the top sheet.
During the remaining fraction of the cylinder rotation, the doorbell lever 16, the rod 19 and the friction feed roller 5 are pulled back, biased by the spring 14 which is under tension; during this second half-revolution, the feed roller 5 is locked to the elbow shaft 6 and drives the top sheet of the stack to bring it - under the front end in the shape of a barrel, of the tray 10 and between the feed couple formed by the wheel 21 and the roller 35.
At this moment the wheel 21 is stationary. The edge 81 of the notch 37 formed in the apron contributes to guiding the front edge of the sheet between the wheel 21 and the roller 35. During the first quarter of a successive revolution of the cylinder, the linkage consists of the lever. 23, of the connecting rod 27, of the lever 29 and of the lever 33 is actuated by the cam follower 25 so as to rotate the wheel 21 about 90o in a counterclockwise direction.
During this phase of the machine's operating cycle, the first sheet of copy paper is transferred to the front by the feeding couple formed by the wheel 21 and the roller 35, that is to say in the direction of the depression formed between the cylinder 2 and the back pressure roller 3, while, simultaneously, the friction feed roller 5 carried by the platen has made a fraction of a further backward movement over the next sheet of stack to prepare for another forward movement to transfer the second sheet.
The timing of the cams is provided so that there is the minimum delay between the instant when the sheet is transferred from the stack to the feeder torque 21, 35 and the start of the rotation of this feed torque, in order to advance the sheet towards the printing couple. When the leading edge of the first sheet of paper has been gripped by cylinder 2 and back pressure roller 3, cam disc 52 which controls the humidifier pad device lowers cam roller 58 and lever 59,
against the contrary bias of the spring 60, which allows the pad assembly to descend by rotating around the axis P and rests the front lower edge of the humidifier pad against the sheet. paper.
Under these conditions, the humidification of the upper face of this sheet of paper begins, from a non-humidified margin which corresponds to the distance separating the front edge of the humidifier pad (in the lowered position) from the hollow or contact generator. between the elements that constitute the printing couple. The next revolution of the cylinder completes the introduction of the sheet of paper into the printing pair while printing on the sheet the text or subject carried by the stencil or original wrapped around the cylinder;
however, simultaneously, the second sheet of paper was introduced between the elements of the feed couple consisting of the wheel 21 and the roller 35 as a result of the forward stroke effected by the friction feed roller 5.
The bearing 53 of the cam 52 which controls the humidifier pad is profiled. so as to make it possible to provide the necessary delay in the actuation of the positive buffer device with respect to the forward movement of the copy sheet by the feeder couple 21 and 35; however, this setting can be changed later using screw 63.
The return of the carriage and of the rod 19 is provided by the return spring 14. Although a single return spring is sufficient, it is preferable to also provide a separate return spring for the rod 19; this additional spring is indicated at 93 (fig. 2) in the form of a compression spring held between the side plate 1 and a collar fixed to the rod 19 or a shoulder thereof.
In the feed mechanism described above, the plate 10 as well as the friction feed device can be withdrawn as a whole at any time, since there is no positive coupling between the rod 19 and the friction feed roller. 5.
Fig. 3 relates to a variant having a positive but easily removable coupling between the rod 19 and the assembly of the friction feed roller.
The carriage 8 is slidably mounted on the rail 9, as in the embodiment described above, but, instead of a push bar 12 (fig. 1. And 2), this variant comprises a locking lever 85 which is articulated on the carriage at 86 and cooperates with a finger 87 fixed on the rod 19 so as to constitute a quick-disconnect coupling.
A trigger lever 89 is fixed to the end of the axis of the angled lever 7 which extends in the transverse direction of the carriage 8, and carries a finger 90 intended to cooperate with a notch 91 formed in the locking lever 85 As shown in the drawing, in the coupling position, the locking lever 85 is biased downwards by a spring 88 so that a slot 92 engages the finger 87. Therefore, the automatic feeding of the pins sheets can be secured in the same way as in the case of figs. 1 and 2, as long as the locking lever is integral with the finger 87.
When it is desired to replace the automatic feed by the manual feed, the roller 5 is tilted counterclockwise to place it in the position indicated in phantom lines, so that the finger 90 engages the notch 91 and releases the locking lever, which allows the slot 92 to release the finger 87. The mechanism is held in this position by the weight of the roller 5 which holds the trigger lever 89 against a stopper 94.
The finger 87 is disengaged from the opening of the slot - but not from the rim 95 and, consequently; it pushes the trolley to the left along rail 9 and out of the feed zone.
If you want to resume the automatic feeding, the roller is tilted clockwise on the stack of sheets and the carriage is pushed forward by hand, which has the consequence. to slide the inclined nose 96 of the locking lever over the finger 87 and allows the reciprocal engagement of the slot and the finger. During this movement, the top sheet of the stack is transferred forward by the friction roller 5 and the automatic feeding resumes from that moment without interruption.
Any suitable means can be used to guide and hold the feed tray 10 in the machine. In the machine shown, as seen in fig. 1, 2 and 4, grooves l01 are 'formed in each side flange 1 and the to receive guide plates 102 fixed to the bottom of the plate, on either side thereof. In the edge of each plate is formed a gap 103 through which passes the end of a finger 104 so as to engage in a small cavity 107 formed in the corresponding flange of the frame.
Each finger has a sleeve 105 by which it is freely mounted on a fixed rod 106, while a spring 108 normally urges the finger in the position which allows it to lock the plate in the aforementioned grooves. To remove the plate, one acts on the fingers using their tabs 109, so as to remove their ends from the intervals 103 and then allow the plate to be extracted.
The machine is normally equipped with a receiving plate arranged at the rear of the printing couple to collect the sheets of poly copy after printing. To save space, this tray can be made in the form of a telescopic device. In addition, the details of the sliding carriage 8 can be op portunently changed; for example, the flat guide rail 9 can be replaced by a guide rail with a round section carrying a res out of. different type of return for the carriage, this spring being attached to the right end of the guide rail and bearing against the end of the carriage.
When using a round section rail, it may be necessary to provide an additional lateral guide member to compensate for the elbow shaft 6 and the friction feed roller 5, and also to avoid applying pressure. excess on the battery.
