Mechanism for advancing and positioning a sheet of paper of a typewriter The present invention relates to a mechanism for advancing and positioning a sheet of paper from a typewriter , comprising a feed roller and a line spacing mechanism for rotating the roller and advancing the sheet of paper,
in which the roller is provided at one end with an indicating device comprising a graduation and an index for use in conjunction with reference marks on a paper table and positioned so as to cooperate with the lower end of the roller. the sheet of paper when inserted between the paper table and the roll, the graduation on the roll being at a portion which can be rotatably adjusted relative to the index.
It is common practice to provide in current typewriters, in addition to the usual click mechanism by means of which defined increases in rotation of the line spacing roller are obtained upon actuation of the carriage return lever line spacing, a mechanism for effecting fractional line spacing movements of the roll.
To enable such operations to be carried out, a two-part clutch device is incorporated in the roller, this device remaining normally active but being able to be taken out of engagement to allow the roller to rotate relative to the wheel. ratchet click mechanism.
Some known mechanisms are constructed in such a way that they require the existence of two separate graduations, one being on the end of the roller to be used in conjunction with the second graduation on the paper table or alternatively only they require an adjustment mechanism in addition to the fractional line spacing mechanism.
The mechanism according to the invention is characterized in that said graduation forming part of the paper holder roll is rotatably connected with the line spacing mechanism and forms part of a coupling device by means of which the roll is liable to be taken out of engagement to rotate independently, and in that the registration mark on the paper holder table is spaced to bring it into the correct position relative to the axis of the roll so that, for an end-of-page indication operation, by adjusting said graduation of the indicating device to a starting position determined in advance by rotation of the roller,
the bottom edge of the paper sheet can be brought up to meet the registration mark by releasing the coupling to release the roll and allow it to be rotated until the sheet is matched when the machine is set for end-of-page indication when reengaging the coupling.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism for advancing and positioning a sheet of paper of a typewriter according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the carriage of the typewriter equipped with the embodiment of the mechanism. Fig. 2 is a developed view of a gra duation. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of an indicator element.
Fig. 4 is a partial perspective view showing a worksheet the lower end of which coincides with a reference mark.
Fig. 5 is a partial horizontal section of the extreme left part of the typewriter roller of FIG. 1.
Fig. 6 is a section through the broken line 6-6 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 7 is a view taken looking from the right hand end of FIG. 1, some parts being shown in section and others in elevation. The embodiment of the mechanism of the machine shown in the drawing comprises a carriage base constituted by a rail 1 which can move for the spacing of the letters and to return back, on a frame rail 2. Balls 3 are inserted. between the carriage frame rail 1 and the frame rail 2. The carriage frame includes end plates 4 and 5, the latter being equipped. with a bearing 6 for mounting, in rotation, a shaft 7 which carries the roller 8 for advancing the worksheet.
An operating knob 9 is fixed to the right end of the shaft 7 by means of set screws, one of which is shown at 10 in FIG. 1. The shaft 7 is mounted in a bore 11 (fig. 5) of the roller 8, the left end of this shaft passing through a sleeve 12 por as a flange 13 fixed to the roller 8 by means of screws of which the 'one is indicated at 14. For assembly or disassembly of the shaft 7 and the roller 8, the shaft can be slid through the bore 11 and the sleeve 12. To hold the shaft and the roller in their assembled position, set screws 15 carried by a boss 16 fixed to the right end of roller 8 are tightened.
The boss 16 cooperates with the right end plate 5, with the bearing 6 and with the central boss of the button 9 to prevent any axial movement of the shaft with respect to the carriage.
The left end of the shaft 7 is mounted so as to rotate in a bearing 17 screwed into the left end plate 4 and held in place by a lock nut 18. A button 19, fixed at the end left side of shaft 7 by means of set screws 20, can be used alternatively with button 9 to rotate roller 8, in order to advance a worksheet S.
A click mechanism serves to determine defined fractions of rotation of roller 8 for line spacing. In the type shown, this click mechanism comprises a movable ratchet member 21 attached to the central boss of a coupling member 22 and providing the fractional spacing of the lines. The element 22 comprises a part 23 and a part 24 in the form of a peripheral casing carrying, on its inner surface, a ring of coupling teeth 25. Another coupling element 26 cooperating with the element 22 is equipped with dowels, one of which is shown at 27, these dowels passing through a guide bore 28 made in the rim 13 of the sleeve 12 and through an enlarged hole made in the body of the roller 8.
A flange 30, fixed to the inner end part of the pin 27, serves as a seat for one end of a compression spring 31, the other end of which rests on the bottom of the enlarged hole 29. The other pins, which are not shown, but which are similar to the pin 27, are equipped in a similar manner with edges 30 which can cooperate with springs 31. The arrangement is such that the springs 31, which act on the edges 30 of the pins , tend to move the coupling member 26 axially outwardly, so as to normally bring the coupling teeth 32 of the member 26 into engagement with the crown 25 of the coupling member 22.
Accordingly, the ratchet member 21 is normally coupled with the roller 8 so as to rotate synchronously with it.
To cooperate with the ratchet member 21 to determine defined degrees of line spacing movements made by the ratchet, and therefore by the roller 8, a roller 33 is mounted on a lever 34 articulated at 35 on the left plate 4. A spring 36, fixed to the end plate 4 and to the left end of the lever 34, urges this lever upwards, so as to keep the roller 33 elastically in contact with the element. ratchet 21, a stop 36 being carried by the end plate 4 and being able to be met by the lever 34 to limit the movement of the roller 33 upwards.
A combined line spacing and carriage return lever, which lever is of a known type (not shown), can be used to actuate the ratchet member via an operating arm 37 articulated on the bearing 17 and carrying a pawl (not shown) able to engage with the ratchet element 21. A mechanism can also be used to determine the single or multiple spacing of the lines by the operation of the lever. combined return of the carriage and spacing of the lines, and this mechanism can include a control arm, part of which is shown at 38 articulated on the bearing 17. A spacing washer 39 is interposed between the control arm 38 and the control arm 37.
It is sometimes desirable to cause the roller 8 to perform a fraction of the space movement of a line, i.e. to impart to the roller a smaller rotational movement than a single spacing movement of line corresponding to the spacing of the teeth of the ratchet element. In order for this operation to be carried out, a mechanism serves to decouple the coupling elements 22 and 26, which allows the roller 8 to rotate relative to the ratchet element 21. For this purpose, the left end of the shaft 7 is hollow, because it has a groove 40 in which engages an operating rod 41 equipped at its outer end with a control knob 42 which can be actuated by a finger.
A washer 43, attached to the rod 41 inside the hub of the button 19, may engage said hub at the end of the groove 40 to prevent the rod 41 from being completely withdrawn from the groove 40. The inner end of the rod 41 may engage and rest on an ear-shaped portion 44 attached to the coupling member 26.
To make the roller 8 perform the fraction of a line spacing movement, the button 42 is pushed inward, causing the rod 41 to press on the lug 44 and move the coupling member 26 axially to the right in fig. 5, this movement having the effect of disengaging the coupling teeth 32 relative to the crown 25. The roller 8 can then be rotated by means of the button 19 and of the shaft 7, while the ratchet element 21 is held stationary by the click roller 33.
When the fraction of the line spacing movement has been effected by the roller 8, the button 42 is released, which allows the springs 31 to return the coupling element 26 to its normal position of. clutch with the coupling element 22. The coupling teeth 32 and 25 are so thin that when they re-engage this does not give rise to any appreciable relative displacement, by rotation, between the coupling elements 22 and 26.
The carriage shown in the drawings also includes a hollow plate 45 which extends below roller 8 and feed rollers 46 and 47. A rear paper table 48 is hinged at 49 to the frame of the carriage. A paper hoop designated as a whole by 50 comprises arms 51 and 52 articulated at 53 on the carriage, and a front bar 54 carrying rollers 55 for retaining the paper.
Considered in general, the assembly described so far is known. The embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention is capable of being incorporated into known types of typewriters, in particular portable machines, with the minimum of changes to be made to them and comprises an indicating device having clues allowing the operator to know how well there are lines available to complete a worksheet.
This device is formed in part by the outer surface 56 of the coupling element 22 which bears the index SET and the numbers 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 with graduation lines corresponding and intermediate lines allowing the numbers 7, 5, 3, 1, which are not actually indicated, to be easily interpolated. The spaces between the lines of the scale correspond to the degrees of advancement of the sheet of paper for the spacing of the lines, that is to say to the spaces which separate two neighboring teeth of the ratchet element 21, as shown in fig. 2. The lines of the graduation of the indicator are arranged so as to be read together with a relatively fixed member, index 57 carried by the paper hoop 50.
The surface 56 surrounds and envelops the coupling elements 25 and 32.
When the button 42 is not pressed inwards, so that the coupling elements 22 and 26 are engaged by the springs 31, the rotation of the roller is accompanied by a simultaneous rotation of the surface 56. However, when the fractional row space button 42 is pressed inwardly, so as to decouple the coupling elements 22 and 26 which are removably engaged, the roller 8 can rotate freely, while the surface 56 remains stationary.
An extension arm 58 extending the paper table is hinged at 59 on a mounting plate member 60 attached to the paper table 48 by means of screws 61. A conjugate extension arm 62 crosses the arm 58 and is hinged at 63 on the arm 58 at a point spaced from the articulation 59 of the arm 58. A spring friction washer 64 (fig. 6) is interposed between the arm 62 and the head of the articulation 63. At the lower end of the arm 62, a che town 65 spaced from the pivot 63 engages in a long groove 66 of the plate 60 and it is movable so as to be able to both pivot and slide in the groove.
The groove 66 is generally parallel to the axis of the shaft 7 and the arrangement is such that when the arm 58 or the arm 62 is moved to pass from a lower position of withdrawal or of rest indicated in dashed line in FIG. . 1 at a superior position of extension or action indicated in solid lines in said figure, the combined arm moves in correspondence. Conversely, when one of the arms is brought to its rest position, the other arm follows the movement. A groove 67 is made in the rear portion of the paper table 48 to allow the arms 58 and 62 to extend upward from their mounting on the plate 60.
The arm 58 carries a button 68 obtained by external stamping and capable of engaging a hole 69 of the mounting plate 60 to retain the arms 58 and 62 in a removable manner in their raised or extended position. When the arms are in their extended position, they effectively together form an upper continuation or extension of the paper table 48 to support a worksheet, as shown in FIG. 7, so as to prevent the ends of the worksheets from sagging behind the typewriter and coming into contact with the edges of a carrying case (not shown).
The operation is as follows: a sheet of paper S is inserted in a known fashion below and around the roller $, and when the coupling elements 22 and 26 are engaged, that is to say in taken together, the roller 8 and, consequently, the surface 56 are rotated until the mark SET coincides with the index 57 of the scale . The button 42 is then pressed to disengage the coupling elements 22 and 26, and the cylinder is rotated until the lower edge of the sheet of paper S coincides with a guide line connecting reference marks 70 carried by the extension arms 58 and 62 and parallel to the axis of the roller 8.
While the roller 8 is being rotated to bring the sheet of paper to this position, the click roller 33 prevents the ratchet member 21 and therefore the surface 56 from rotating. The button 42 is then disengaged and at this time the indicator marks SET and the bottom edge of the sheet of paper coincides with the registration marks 70.
The roller 8 is then rotated so as to place the worksheet S in the desired position as desired by the operator to begin writing at or near the top of the sheet. When the roller is rotated to make the spacing of the successive lines, the surface 56 rotates with the cylinder and, when the bottom of the page approaches the writing line, the figures 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 and the corresponding graduations, as well as the intermediate lines of the scale, come to be placed under the index 57 so as to gradually indicate the extent of the space remaining to receive the writing, before the bottom of the worksheet reaches the entry line.
In order for the indicating device to be able to correctly indicate the amplitude of the space remaining for writing, the distance between the reference marks 70 and the axis of the roller 8 is such, relative to the diameter of the cylinder, that when the operating button 9 or 19 has been actuated with the coupling elements 22 and 26 engaged to bring the surface 56 to its predetermined starting position, when the coupling elements 22 and 26 have been disengaged, when the roller 8 was rotated by means of the operating knob to bring the bottom of the worksheet to coincide with the registration marks 70 and when the coupling elements 22 and 26 were re-engaged, a new how well the roller rotates,
with the consequence that a degree of advancement of the sheet in the direction of the line spacing causes the indicating device to indicate the space remaining available on the sheet to receive the writing when the bottom of the sheet approaches the writing line. In one example, the necessary relation between the parts is satisfied when the diameter of the cylinder is substantially 32 mm and when the distance between the registration marks 70 and the axis of the cylinder is substantially 114 mm.
In order that the device can be used with very short worksheets, which are not long enough to extend from the registration marks 70 to the roll 8, the hollow paper plate 45 has a reference line. 71 with which one can bring the lower edge of these short sheets to coincide before putting the coupling elements 22 and 26 back into engagement.
In a variant, only one of the extension arms bears the reference mark 70.
