La fig. 1 représente l'ensemble d'une ma chine à calculer selon l'invention; La fig. 2 est une coupe du mécanisme d'impression de la machine; La fig. 3 est une vue de détail d'un électro-aimant commandant le mécanisme d'impression; La fig. 4 est une coupe horizontale du mé canisme d'impression représenté en coupe verticale sur la fig. 2; La fig. 5 est une vue isométrique du mé canisme accumulateur électrique;
La fig. 6 est une vue, en plan, d'un com mutateur chargé d'effectuer les reports pen dant les opérations d'addition; La fig. 7 est une coupe suivant la ligne 7-7 -de la fig. 6; Les fig. 8 et -9 sont des vues, respective ment en plan et en coupe, d'un commutateur chargé d'effectuer les reports pendant les opé rations de soustraction; La fig. 10 est une vue schématique d'un accumulateur et d'un mécanisme coordonnateur montrant la façon dont s'effectue l'addition;
On va supposer que chaque carte 137 por tant un article de compte négatif, ou un ar ticle de compte à retrancher, présente une perforation en avant de la première perfora tion d'addition, dans une colonne coopérant avec un balai analyseur 260. Toute carte pré- sentant la. perforation en question ferme un circuit partant de la ligne 171 et passant par le fil 174, l'induit du moteur 25, la ligne 262, le balai analyseur 260, le fil 265, le con tact d'amenée des cartes CI'-15, lequel se ferme simultanément avec le passage, sous le balai 260, de la portion de la carte qui présente la perforation spéciale;
Nachâne to calculate. The present invention relates to a calculating machine, provided with an input mechanism and an accumulator mechanism, a purely electrical input receiver, divided into a number of sections to receive the inputs.
In known calculating machines, of the I-Iollerith type, the input mechanism is controlled by punched cards on which the numbers are represented by drilled holes: at different places and which show the different numbers. Each of the columns of a map usually corresponds to an order of units, and, to allow the use of a decimal system, each column has ten positions of dots gradually moving away from the edge of the map, from so as to represent the ten digits.
The input mechanism is constituted, in these machines, by electric brushes called analyzer brushes, the reason of one brush per column of the card; the latter is brought under the brushes in an uninterrupted movement so that, when any brush meets a hole drilled in a position corresponding to a number, an electric circuit closes at a moment of the machine cycle corresponding to the number it is about. This circuit closure gives rise to an electrical pulse regulated in time, which actuates a printing and accumulating mechanism.
The calculating machine according to the invention can be of the type just mentioned, but it is obvious that it can belong to any other calculating machine system, for example to that in which the input mechanism is constituted by a keyboard. It is characterized by a coordinating mechanism arranged between the input mechanism and the electric mechanism receiving the inputs, to allow simultaneous inputs into the different sections of the electric mechanism receiving the inputs.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the accumulator comprises a series of ten electromagnets for each order of units and each of the electromagnets in question is provided with a pair of contact elements. . Each of the electromagnets forming part of a series corresponds to a particular number and, when energized, it closes its contact so as to make the particular number it represents apparent.
The closing of a particular circuit therefore constitutes the fundamental manifestation of any figure entered into the accumulator. The addition is obtained by changing the connections of the circuits, so that the closed contact, corresponding to a digit, commands the contact to close when another digit is entered. For example, if the zero contact is closed in the accumulator, it prepares in advance a circuit passing through the other relays, so that the input of the number three, for example, closes the contact of relay no.3 and opens that of the zero leave.
The circuit of relay n 3 thus becomes the basic circuit, so that, if another number is entered, for example the number five, the relay n 8 is energized and closes its contact, which corresponds to the number eight, i.e. sum of three and five.
In this embodiment, a transfer mechanism makes it possible to add with exactitude figures, belonging to different imitated orders, taken from the punched cards, in the case of a machine using punch cards. The subtraction is carried out in an analogous manner, with the difference that the circuits are selected so that their change, when entering a digit, corresponds to a subtraction.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown, by way of example, this embodiment of the object of the invention.

Fig. 11 is a view similar to that of FIG. 10, showing how the subtraction is performed; Figs. 12 and 12a, the first of which must be placed above the second, schematically represent a complete circuit of the machine.
As seen in fig. 1, the machine is driven by an electric motor 25 which, by means of a system of belt and pulleys, the assembly of which is designated by 26, turns the main transmission shaft 27 of the machine.
The part of the machine where the cards are fed is similar to that which is usually found on machines of this type. It has been fully represented and described in the Lake patent, issued in the United States under the number 1600413. The mechanism for feeding the cards passes them one by one from a ma gasin or a hopper to the analyzer brushes. constituting the input mechanism of the machine, so that they can separately control the addition and impression mechanisms. The supply of the cards is controlled by a shaft 28, which is driven by the main transmission shaft 27, by means of a suitable gear 29.
The ordinary clutch device, which is driven in a single revolution by electromagnetic control and then automatically disengaged, is interlocked in the gear train, so that the excitation of the electromagnet of the device Card feed clutch rotates card feed shaft 28 through four complete machine cycles. At the supply shaft of the cards are fixed the ordinary supply cams, the whole of which is designated by 32, and which are responsible for opening and closing the contacts necessary for the operation of certain circuits during the operation. 'bring-cards.
The contacts actuated by the cams in question will bear the indicator letters CF. On the card supply shaft are also fixed three switches 33, 34 and 271. The switch 33 constitutes the coordinating mechanism, the switches 34 and 271 will be called respectively the addition carry switch and the carry switch. of subtraction. The role of these three switches will be explained later.
It will be understood that as long as the card feed clutch system is engaged, all the cards located in the part of the mechanism where the cards are fed will come, one by one, under the analyzer brushes constituting the input mechanism, and the contact boxes 32 of the supply of the cards as well as the switches 33, 34 and 271 will function.
The cams for supplying the cards are, with the switches 33, 34 and 271, the only rotating organs which play a direct role in the accumulation operation; this results in a considerable mechanical simplification of the machine as regards the accumulator mechanism.
The machine is further simplified owing to the fact that it comprises only one printing shaft 35, both for columnarization and for totalization. This shaft is driven without stopping by the main transmission shaft 27, by means of a gear train, the assembly of which is designated by 36. The single-turn clutch device, of which we have spoken more top, is selectively operated such that the printing mechanism can be operated from the printing shaft, either in conjunction with the card supply shaft or independently of the card supply operation.
The printing mechanism also drives, through suitable gears, a switch 38 which opens the printing circuits when the machine is not prepared for printing operations. A series of brushes 292, cooperating with fixed switches 37, is also driven by the printing mechanism, so as to carry out totalization operations, as will be explained below.
The printing mechanism, shown in particular in figs. ? and 4, is absolutely similar to the mechanism usually used on machines of this type and which has been shown in the Daly and Page patent issued in the United States under No. 17,6,2145, with this modification however, that the single print shaft 35 actuates the typical bars for both column setting and totalizing operations. On the printing shaft 3.5 is fixed a disc 41, the periphery of which has a single notch.
This disc is driven without stopping, by the main transmission shaft 27, through the gear 36.
A box-shaped cam 42, mounted loose on the printing shaft, carries fixed to it a toothed wheel 43, which drives the switch 38 as well as the brushes 92. On the toothed wheel 43 is. articulated a pawl 44, which carries a projection which can engage in the notch of the disc 41 and tends at any time to engage therein by means of a spring 45. This engagement can be prevented by means of a latch 46, actuated by a spring, so as to normally hook the shank 47 of the pawl 44. As long as the shank of the pawl is thus engaged, the rotation of the main transmission shaft does not cause that of the cam. printing 42.
But when the lo quet 46 rocks, so as to abandon the pawl 44, the latter engages its projection in the notch of the disc 41 and thus drives the box-shaped cam 42. During the addition operations of the machine, the operation or not operation of the cam 42 is determined by a lever 51, the operation of which has been described in US Pat. No. Daly et Page No. 1762145.
The handle of the lever in question is visible in fig. 1; it is arranged so that, when it is in the L position, the printing mechanism operates; when the handle of the lever 51 is brought into the position marked A, the printing mechanism does not work. The shaft 60 carries an arm, connected to the lever 51 and which actuates a trin gle 52 (fig. 4), which is moved to the right of the figure when the machine has to print, and to the left when the machine does not have to print. not print.
The rod 52 carries, at its end, a bevelled part 53 which can engage between projections carried by scissors, 54 and 55.
The movement of the rod 52 to the right causes the branch 54 which is fixed to the shaft 57 (which carries the pawl 46) to tilt and thus causes the shaft to tilt counterclockwise by disengaging the pawl 46 of the shank 47 of the pawl 44, which allows the protrusion of said pawl to engage in the notch of the disc 41 and thus to rotate the impression cam 42 with the main transmission shaft.
The operation of the part 53 causes, in this case, the branch 55 of the scissors to tilt slightly in the direction of clockwise, thus moving the alignment roller 58 away from the notch formed in the cam in the form of a box 42. The function of this alignment roller 58 is to place the printing shaft, and its associated members, exactly in the position corresponding to zero, when no printing operation takes place.
The movement of the lever 51, responsible for causing or avoiding the setting in a column, also controls the contact 61 (FIG. 4), the role of which will be explained below.
The cam 42 carries a groove 62, in which engages a 6: 3 roller pivoting on an arm 64. The latter is attached to a tilting shaft 65 which carries additional arms 66. As the cam 42 rotates, the shaft rocker 6 <5 rocks under the control of the arm 64 and thus raises the lowering arms 66 syn chronically with the operation of the machine. The arms 66 are responsible for lifting and lowering the type bars of the machine. The bars, type 71 carry, at their upper end, a type carrier 72 whose characters represent the various figures.
The type bars in question slide in a cross member 7'3, which is connected to the arms 66 by connecting rods 74, thanks to which the printing cam 42 raises and lowers the cross member 73 in question. The latter carries support plates 75 to which are articulated arms 76, each of which is engaged under the lower edge of a type bar 71. Springs 77, connected to the plates 75 and to the arms 76, normally raise the bar bars. types with the crossbar 73 and thus successively bring the various types of the type carrier 72 in front of the plate 78.
The movement of any type bar can be interrupted, without impeding the movement of the cross member, by means of the springs 77 which tension so as to allow the cross member to move relative to the type bar.
Each of the type bars is provided with rack teeth 81 which cooperate with a pawl 82 to stop the type bar in certain positions and thereby select the various types for printing. The pawl 82 is normally engaged with a latch 83, controlled by a take-off rod 84 actuated by a printing electromagnet 85. The printing electromagnets are energized at different times so as to print the prints. different digits selected.
When these electromagnets are excited, they attract their armatures 86, so as to pull the take-off rods 84 to the right and thus release the latches 83, which allows the pawls 812, under the control of their springs , to hook the tooth of the rack 81 which arrives in a suitable position to be thus grasped. This results in stopping the type bars with the correct type arranged in front of the platen for printing. As the crosshead approaches the upper limit of its stroke, hammers 91 stumble so as to produce the impression of the type facing the platen.
The hammers in question are actuated by a common yoke 92 pivoting at 93 and pushed in the reverse direction-clockwise by a then spring 94. A lever 95, articulated to the arm 6,6, brings back the 'caliper <B> 92 </B> and thus tension the spring 94 when the arm 66 goes up. When the latter reaches its upper limit, the lever 95 hits an obstacle which causes it to swing around its pivot, which forces it to abandon the caliper 92 at, the action of the spring 94 and to strike a blow. dry on the hammers 91, so as to produce the impression.
The printing mechanism is brought into play, for the printing of a total, when the machine is arranged to avoid columnarization, by an electromagnet 101 (fig. 3 and 4). This electromagnet is excited, during the totalization cycles, in the way which will be explained later. When it is thus excited, the electromagnet 101 attracts its frame 102, the articulated support of which carries an arm 103, which cooperates with a finger 104 located on an arm 105 fixed to the shaft 57. The arm <B> 105 </B> then tilts shaft 57, unless the latter is already in position to print and forces latch 46 (fig. 2) to release pawl 44.
The protrusion on the latter then engages in the notch of the disc 41 and rotates the printing cam 42 with the main transmission shaft 27, during the operation. totalization. If the machine is arranged so as not to make a column setting, the latch 46, as soon as the electromagnet 101 ceases to be excited, moves backwards, so as to hook the tail 47 of the pawl 44 @ to the end of the total printing cycle: the clutch system is thus free, so as not to make columnarization during the following addition operations:
Fig. 5 shows the electric accumulator mechanism, receiver of the inputs, which is of the purely electric type as opposed to a mechanism of this kind with purely mechanical actuation, this mechanism being divided into four sections, in order to receive the inputs of four unit orders. Each order of units has ten relays 110, each of which has its contact 111. Each time any relay is energized, its armature 112, which is suitably mounted to pivot on a rod, forces, by tilting, the element. lower contact 111 to mount, thanks to the projection 113, and thus close the contact.
A blocking plate 114, pivoting at 115, has an edge 116 turned inward, which lies in the path of the lower elements of the contacts 111. The plate is. normally held in place by a res comes out 117. When a contact 111 closes, the movement of the lower contact element, which acts on the edge 116 turned in. switches the plate 1.14 and when the contact element reaches that of its positions corresponding to the closing of the circuit, the spring 1.17 returns the plate 114 to its normal position, thus blocking the particular contact closed.
In the figure, the fifth contact is blocked in this way in the order of the units. Incidentally, the rocking movement of the plate 111 (to block a contact element, following the excitation of the corresponding electromagnet) releases all the previously closed contacts, so that only one contact at a time remains closed in an order of units.
The accumulator can be put back to. zero, that is, each contact representing significant digits can. be opened, by means of the reset bar 121 actuated by a reset electromagnet 122. This bar is supported by pivoting arms 123, one of which (the one on the right) carries the frame 124 of the reset electromagnet 122. In front of each blocking plate 114, the bar is provided with a cutout tab <B> 126 </B> which cooperates with a vertical extension of the locking plates 114. When the electromagnet 122 is energized, the bar 121 is caused to move to the right and it causes all the plates 114 to tilt, so as to release all the contacts 111 which were closed.
We can note that, to use the accumulator in question, it is essential to start an addition with the contact <B> 111, </B> corresponding to zero, closed, because a base circuit is required to start the machine. For this purpose, the contacts 126, at the rate of one contact for each order of units of the accumulator, are actuated by a rod 127, supported by an arm 128, which is fixed to the armature support system. 124 of the resetting electromagnet. The oscillation of the mature ar 124, as a result of the excitation of the electromagnet 122, causes the. closing of the contacts 126, which has the effect of exerting the electromagnets 110 corresponding to the zero of each order of units.
Enough clearance is left between the tabs 125 and the vertical extensions of the bars 114, on the one hand, and between the control bar 127 and the contacts 126, on the other hand, so that the zero electromagnets as well excited remain so long enough to allow the plate 114 to return to its locked position and to keep the zeros contacts closed in each order of units. In addition to the contacts 111, the orders of intermediate units of the accumulators have an additional series of contacts 131 for the electromagnet of the digit nine, and additional contacts 132 for the electromagnet zero.
The contacts in question are organized so as to close concurrently with the contacts 111 of the respective relays. They play a role in the port as will be explained later.
Fig. 10 makes it possible to understand the principle of addition for a single order of units. 135 designates an analyzer brush of the machine combined, in the usual way, with a cylinder or roller 136. The perforated card 137 passes between the brush 135 and the cylinder 1.36 and, during this passage, any perforation located in a position any indicator point allows the brush 135 to momentarily touch the cylinder 136. This momentary contact is set, in. time, according to the position of the indicator point, thanks to the constant movement of the card through to the machine.
The switch or coordinating mechanism 33 which, as explained above, is mounted on the card supply shaft (FIG. 1), rotates in a movement synchronized with that of the card 137, so that determined lines, shown on the dotted switch, and numbered from nine to zero, pass through a series of brushes when the dots. Corresponding indicators themselves pass through the analyzer brush 135. The lower face of the switch 3 is provided with concentric conductive batons 140, while its upper face carries conductors 141 in the form of a spiral.
The rings 140 are discontinuous, so as to. open the addition circuits between the cards, when the analyzer brushes are in contact with the 1.3: 6 roller. A row of brushes 143 cooperates with the bars 140 and a row of brushes 142 cooperates with the spiral conductors 141. Each spiral 141 is connected with only one of the rings 140, indicated by the small circumferences in the drawing. Each brush 142 is connected with one of the relay electromagnets 110, the outermost brush being connected with electromagnet # 9, the next brush with electromagnet # 8 and so on. .
The brushes 1.43 are connected, in the same way, to one of the contacts 111 of, relays 110 ,. The outer broom is connected to relay contact # 9, the next to # 8 and so on.
A return wire 144, common to all relay contacts 111, terminates, passing through an accumulator battery B, at the analyzer brush 135. Likewise, the electromagnets 110 are connected by a wire 145 which terminates at the cylinder. 136. It is thus seen that in order to energize a relay coil 110 which shell, the circuit must be completed with the analyzer brush 13.5 as well as between the brushes 142 and 143. When the position of the new indicator point on the card passes through the analyzer brush, the dotted line marked "9" of the switch 33 passes through the brushes 142.
At this moment, the broom 142, numbered 9 against the spiral 141, which is joined to the ring 140 of zero, the broom 142 numbered 8 touches the spiral 141 connected to the ring no 9 and the broom 142 numbered "7" cooperates with the spiral connected to the ring no.8 and so on. When indicator point 8 on map 13.7 passes through the analyzer brush, the dotted line marked "8" on switch 33 passes through brushes 142.
The connections have been changed in that the bare broom 142 meroté "9" now meets the spiral 141 connected to the ring 140 of no 1, the broom 142, numbered "8" cooperates with the spiral re linked to the ring 141 of zero and the No. 7 broom cooperates with the spiral connected to the No. 9 ring and so on. It can therefore be seen that the circuit connections have been changed so as to correspond to the change in the indicator points which are located under the analyzer bays. This change of one unit for each indicator point position continues when the switch turns and when the cards are brought past the analyzer brushes.
A particular example will make it possible to enter the addition operation. We will first assume that the zero electromagnet 110 has been excited so as to close its <B> 111 </B> contact and that a card passing through the analyzer brushes has a perforation located in the position indicator point no 3. The card arrives under the analyzer brushes with the new indicator point forward and, when indicator point three reaches the brushes and thus provokes a temporary contact of the brush 135 with the cylinder 136, the dotted line no 3 of switch 3: 3 is located under brushes 142.
An addition circuit is thus established as follows: This circuit starts from the brush 135 and passes successively through the accumulator battery B, the common return wire 144, the contact 111 of zero, the brush 143 of zero, the zero ring 140, to end with the spiral 141 of no 9. The spiral no 9 coo father with the brush 142 numbered 3, so that the circuit is extended through this brush to the relay electromagnet 110 corresponding to No. 3 and returns to cylinder 186 through common return wire 145. Relay electromagnet No. 3 is thus energized and represents the entry of a three into the accumulator, entry caused by the presence of 'a point indicating three on map 187.
We will now assume that the following card has a perforation in the position of the indicator point out of five, which means that the accumulator, at the end of the operation, must show eight, or, in other words , that contact 111 of relay 110 numbered 8 must be closed. When the position of the point. indicator five passes through the analyzer brush 135, the dotted line No. 5 of switch 33 passes through brushes 142.
In this case, the addition circuit starts from the analyzer brush 135 and passes successively through battery 13, the common return wire 144, contact 111 of relay no.3 (which is the only one to be closed at this time. ), the corresponding broom 143. at no.3 and the ring 140 numbered 3, to end in the spiral 141 connected with the ring no.3.
It will be noted that when the accumulator reaches the position for which the dotted line no 5 is under the brushes 1-12, this particular spiral is in contact with the brush 142 of no 8. As a result, the circuit is extended by relay 110 numbered 8, closes its contact 111 and returns to the cylinder <B> 136. </B> Other figures can be added in the same way, the switch 33 cooperating by means of its brushes 142 and 143 , with the card, so as to carry out, in each case, the appropriate addition.
To subtract, we use the same mechanism, but the circuit connections are changed. Fig. 11 allows this operation to be understood. The circuit arrangement has been changed so that the brushes 142 are connected to the contacts 111 instead of to the relay coils, as in the case of an addition; the brushes 143 were connected to the relay coils 110 instead of being connected to the contacts 111, as before. For the rest, the arrangement remains 1a the same, that is to say that, on the one hand, the brush 142 numbered 9 is connected to the contact 111 numbered 9; on the other hand, the brush 143 numbered 9 is connected to the relay box No. 9 and so on.
As before, switch 33 operates synchronously with the supply of card 1.37, but thanks to the change made to the circuit connections, a number represented by a perforation on card 137 will be subtracted from the number indicated by the accumulator, at instead of being added to this number. A particular example will make the above clearer. We will assume that the contact 111 of relay 110 corresponding to No. 8 is closed, which indicates that the accumulator has received an eight from either a single card or from successive additions. It will be assumed, in addition, that a card 137 having a perforation in position no.3 passes through the analyzer bay 135.
In this case, the number three must be subclassed from the number eight, which means that at the end of the operation, the relay contact 111 numbered 5 must be closed. When the indicator point of the number three passes through the analyzer brush 135, the dotted line # 3 of switch .33 is under the brushes 142. The subtraction circuit then starts from the analyzer brush <B> 135 </B> and passes successively by the battery B, the common return wire 144, the contact 111 of the relay no.8 (which is closed) to lead to the brush 142 numbered 8. At this moment, the brush 142 numbered 8 is in contact with the spiral 141 connected to the ring 140 numbered 5.
Consequently, the circuit is extended by the brush 143 numbered 5 up to the relay coil 110 numbered 5 closing its contact 111, etc., up to the common return wire 145 to return to the cylinder <B> 136. </ B> The subtraction of other figures represented by perforations is carried out in an absolutely similar manner, the rotation of the switch 33 still suitably coupling the brushes 142 and 143, so as to carry out the appropriate under traction thanks to: arrangement of contact spirals 141.
Before explaining 1c, the complete operation of the machine according to the circuit diagram, certain basic principles of the transfer mechanism will be explained with reference to figs. 6 and 7 which represent the addition transfer switch 34, which is also mounted on the card supply shaft 28, as shown in FIG. 1. As in all accumulators, each time entering a number results in a lower number in a certain order of units than that which appeared on the device before entry, in the order of units in question, there is reason to postpone.
If, for example, the accumulator indicates before an entry a digit "5" in a certain order of units, there is no need to carry over provided the entry results in one of the digits 6, 7, 8 or 9, that is, a number greater than five; but if the entry gives as a result a number such as 4, 3, 2, 1 or 0, less than the number which was indicated previously, it means that the addition has exceeded zero and that it is necessary to carry over a unit to the following order of units. In the present invention, there are two separate feedback circuits for the addition relays; one of the circuits is used when there is a place to carry out a transfer and the other is used when there is no transfer to carry out.
The control pulse which produces the input, passing through the return circuits, arranges the mechanism so that the necessary units can be carried over after the part of the cycle corresponding to the addition. Selection of the feedback circuit (carry circuit or non-carry circuit) is obtained through switch 34, which functions much like switch 33, but is more simply constructed. On one of its sides, the switch in question carries two concentric segmental conductors 151 and 152, the first cooperating with a brush 153 connected to the return circuit with transfer 154, while the segment 152 cooperating with a brush 155 connected to the return circuit without postponement 156.
As will be clearly explained later, the circuits in question are not the real carry circuits, but the return circuits of the addition relays, through which the addition pulse passes to bring into play or not the deferral mechanism according to the conditions required by the addition. The title side of the switch 34 is provided with two plates 161 and 162 isolated from each other at 168. A portion of the insulating part 163 takes the form of a spiral, so as to change the circuits. A series of brushes 164, in circuit with the addition relays, cooperates with the plates 16'2 and 163.
The switch 34 rotates synchronously with the feed of the cards and the spiral-shaped insulating strip 16.8 is used to change the feedback circuits 154, <B> 1156 </B> depending on whether a transfer is required or whether it is not 'do not. We will assume that the cumulative ac indicates a number five. If the following operation is added 1, 2, 3 or 4, no carryover is necessary. In each of the aforementioned cases, the brushes 164 carrying the nos. 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, by which the addition circuits are completed, will all cooperate with the plate 1e62 connected to the ring 152 during the entry of the number in the device. Consequently, the return must be made by the circuit without postponement 156.
If we add 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 to the five, a carryover is necessary. In this case, the brushes 16i-1 corresponding to the digits 0, 1., 2, 3 or 4 are in the addition circuit and it will be noted that, for the indicator points 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, all the brushes in question cooperate with the transfer plate 161, which has the effect of introducing the transfer circuit 154 into the addition circuit.
The spiral insulating plate 163 thus determines, upon input caused by a particular indicator point, whether or not there will be a report, depending on whether the result of the addition in a given order of units is inferred. greater than or greater than the number which was read on the accumulator before. The mechanical arrangement and operation of the transfer switch has been explained at this point in the description to enable the circuit diagram to be understood, but the operation of the switch in question will appear more clearly. during the explanation of the machine which will be given later, in accordance with the circuit diagram.
Figs. 8 and 9 represent a carry switch for the case of subtraction. The arrangement of this switch is roughly similar to that of the carry switch used for additions, but the spiral insulating strip is arranged there so as to suitably change the return circuits taking into account the carryovers required by the subtraction. . The theory and operation of this switch is evident from the foregoing description of the carry switch for additions.
We have, as far as possible, simplified the circuit diagram (fig. 12 and 12a) by applying it to a simple type of machine comprising a single row of analyzer brushes below which the cards arrive at their exit. of the shop. In these conditions.
each group of cards, that is to say each different classification of cards, must be placed separately in the magazine, or in the hopper, but it is understood that the; My principles of operation apply equally well to an automatic control machine, such as that which has been described in the patent issued in the United States to Daly and Page souç No. 17-62145. .
The motor 25, which drives the control mechanisms of the machine, is supplied with current by two main lines 171 and 172. This motor has in its inductor circuit a resistor 173 which can be bypassed so that the motor runs. a motor torque drawing at a low speed, when the machine drives the printing mechanism or, in other words, when it is operating under a high load.
During the addition operations, when the printing mechanism is not to be dragged, resistor 173 is inserted into the circuit, so that the motor can run at high speed.
The engine is started by pressing the start key ST, which has the effect of establishing a preliminary circuit which starts from the main line 171 and comprises successively:
the driver 174, the motor armature 25, then the clutch electromagnet 176 for supplying the cards, the motor relay 177, the start button .ST, the stop button S, to reach the other main line 172. The excitation of the relay 177 closes its contact 181 and establishes, for the engine. and for the clutch of the supply of the cards, a circuit which passes through the contact CF-1 card feeder, which closes shortly after starting the card feed, and thus bypasses the.
ST start button. This allows the start key to be released soon after the card feed has started. As soon as the leaves arrive at the brushes, the card lever contact 182 closes in a known manner, so that the motor continues to run as long as cards continue to pass through the brushes.
When the switch 182 of the card lever opens, the motor circuit remains established until the end of the cycle, thanks to a CF-2 contact which stops the motor at the end of the cycle; the opening of said contact is regulated in time, so that the motor, as well as the other mechanisms, stop in their normal stop position.
At the end of a group of cards, a total can be raised, either automatically or by a manual operation. If it is desired to obtain an automatic total, a switch 183 is closed which operates at the. hand. This switch controls the electromagnet 101 which, as explained above, operates the printing clutch device, so as to rotate the printing cam 42, during totalization.
The circuit of the electromagnet 101 and of the switch 183 comprises, on the one hand, the CF-4 contact of the card feed, which closes towards the end of each feed cycle. cards and, on the other hand, the contact <B> 186 </B> of the clutch device for supplying cards, which remains open as long as the device in question is engaged, and closes anyway. device is disengaged.
As soon as the disengagement of the card feeder device occurs, which indicates that the feed of the cards has ceased, a circuit is established starting from line 171 and which successively comprises the wire 174 ending in the motor. 25, the electromagnet 101, the cam contact CF-4, the switch 188, the channel 187, the contact 186 of the clutch device for the supply of the cards, to lead to the other main line 172 The CF-4 card feed contact alone remains closed for the moment, but as soon as the solenoid 101.
is excited, it closes contact 188 and thus closes contact CF-4 for supplying cards and switch 18.3. Shortly after the start of the print total cycle, the P-1 cam contact closes, thereby shorting and removing the excitation of the solenoid 101 of the summer device; m- printing cam clutch, while keeping the motor circuit established until the end of the printing cycle; contact P-1 opens. then and stop the engine.
Towards the end of the printing of a total, the contact to the P-2 terminal closes, thus energizing the reset solenoid 122, which serves to erase the digits on the relays of the accumulator and closing the zero contact in each order of units to prepare for future addition operations. The circuit of the reset electromagnet 122 comprises the contact 191 of the clutch for supplying the cards, which closes only when the supply clutch for the cards is disengaged, which prevents the excitation of the reset electromagnet to take place as long as the supply of the cards lasts.
Usually, resistor 173 is connected in series with the inductor winding of the motor, so that the normal speed of the motor is high. When we move the lever 51 which makes it possible to carry out or avoid a setting in column (fig. 4 and 1.) to the position corresponding to the setting. column, the contacts 61, 61a respectively close. Contact 61 bypasses resistor 13, so as to slowly rotate the motor when the printing mechanism closes during columnization.
A relay <B> 187, </B> disposed in the circuit for printing the totals, closes, when energized, its contact 192, so as to short-circuit resistor 173 while printing the total. . As a result, any printing operation takes place at low speed, while any direct addition operation takes place at high speed.
The T totals key allows at any time to manually control a totalization when the supply of cards does not work; a reset button B can be operated by hand whenever desired. If the hand key B is to be used, the automatic reset switch 193 must be opened to prevent the automatic reset from occurring.
Once the clutch electromagnet 176 for supplying the cards has been excited, the cards 137 are brought, one by one, under the analyzer brushes 135 and carry out the addition operations as theory has been explained. quëe previously about. fig. 10. The addition circuit will now be described in detail, to explain the simultaneous entry of digits into the various orders of units, and the necessary carry operations. Each analyzer brush 1315 is connected, via a star cam 195 (which closes the circuit instantaneously for each indicator point position) with the contacts 111 of the various orders of units.
The scheme of. circuit represents an accumulator at. three orders of units only, because it is possible, with the help of this accumulator, to fully understand the operation of the machine. The analyzer brush 135, which corresponds to the hundreds column of the card, is connected, by means of its star cam 195 and wire 196, to a conductor 197 common to all the contacts 11 of the addition shine. corresponding to the order of hundreds.
Likewise, the tens brush 135 is connected, by the intermediary of a wire 198 and the common conductor 200, to the contacts <B> 111 </B> of the counter relays of the order of tens and finally the brush 135 of the units is also connected to the contacts <B> 111 </B> of the relays of the unit order. The elements which remained free of the contacts <B> 111 </B> of the relays of the order of the hundreds are connected, by separate wires grouped together in a cable 201, to the upper contact elements 204 of a change mechanism. circuits controlled by an electromagnet 203.
For the addition operations, the excitation of the electromagnet 203 is removed and the central contact element 902 touches the upper contact element 204. The contact elements 202 are connected individually, by wires 205, to the brushes 143 of the switch; addition 33. The brushes 142 of said switch are individually connected, by wires 210, to the central contact elements 212 which touch the upper contact elements 211. contact 21.2 can also be moved by the electromagnet 203 and are normally in contact with each upper contact element 211.
The upper contact elements 211 are individually connected to the corresponding relay electromagnets 110, and the circuit extends through a common return wire 213, to a storage battery B, which in turn is connected to a block cooperating with the broom 135 hundreds. The connections of the unit order addition device and the tens order addition device are absolutely similar to those just described with regard to the hundreds order, so we will not describe them. we are not new.
It will be remembered that at the start of an addition operation, the zero contact 111 is closed and that the addition circuit passes through this closed contact; the suitable electromagnet 110 is selected by the analyzer brush 135, which acts in conjunction with the switch 33. The preceding explanation of the circuits should make it clear the addition circuit corresponding to the order of the hundreds.
The circuits corresponding to the tens and units accumulators are complicated by the fact that in the unit orders in question the feedback circuits for the counter relays are used to establish the carry circuits. The addition circuit for the tens counter starts from battery B and passes successively through the tens analyzer brush 135, its star cam 195, the wire 1918 and the common conductor 2001 up to the contacts 111; the circuit then follows the connections gathered in:
the cable 2:21 to the upper contact elements 223 of the circuit change mechanism, then the movable contact elements 222, the wires <B><I>205,</I> </B> the brushes 143 from the switch 33, travels the latter to the brushes 142 and then follows the wires 210 as well as the movable contact elements 2'2e6 (which are normally in contact with the upper contact elements 22: 5) to finally end in the 110i relay boxes corresponding to the tens order.
Instead of having a common return wire, the electromagnets of the order in question are connected individually, by a cable 2'26a ,, to the particular brushes 1.64 (which. Cooperate with the transfer switch d 'addition 34) then, either to the. line 15: 4, or at, la. line 15e6, depending on whether or not to carry forward.
Assuming that a particular entry of digit- should result in. a transfer, the circuit will continue by the wire 154 and by an electromagnet 230 (which is the transfer electromagnet) and will pass. then via the CF-10 cam contact and wire 231 to end at the other pole of battery B, of the order of tens. If there is no need to. transfer, the circuit starts from the addition transfer switch 3'4 and passes successively through wire 156 and the electromagnet 2-32 (which is the electromagnet without transfer) and returns through wire 231 to the battery , like before.
It will be noted, under these conditions, that if there is to be a carryover, the electromagnet 230 is excited thanks to the return circuits of the addition relay and that, if there is no carryover, it is the <B> 232 </B> electromagnet which is excited by the circuits in question.
The addition operation, in order of units, is substantially the same, the electromagnet 234 being energized when there is a carry-over, while it is the electromagnet 235 which is energized when i1_ there is no need to re port. The excitation of the electromagnet 2.30 or of the electromagnet 232 a. the effect of moving a contact lever 236, which is held, in a non-definitive manner, by a spring 235a, in one or the other of the positions. If the transfer solenoid 230 is energized, the lever in question closes contact 237 and thus prepares the actual transfer circuit.
The actual carryover a. occurs (fig. 10) when the analyzer brush 135 passes through the X position of the card <B> 137, </B> which takes place beyond the part of the machine cycle corresponding to the addition. At this moment, the CF-7 card feed contact closes, thus causing the excitation of an electromagnet 240 (fig. 12). This electromagnet moves, for each order of units, a group of contact elements, by connecting to the contact 111 immediately above, the conductors associated with each relay 110 of the accumulator. In other words, the wire connected to relay # 9 is mated with the wire connected to contact # 0. The indicator numbers of the conductors in question on the ss clearly show the complete arrangement of the connections.
Incidentally. these mechanisms of change. or closing circuits cut off communications between wires 205 and wires 210. At about the same time, the CF-8 cam contact (Fig. 1.2a) closes, so as to. complete the postponement circuit.
This circuit starts from the battery B corresponding to. order of hundreds, and successively comprises wire 241, lever 236, contact 23.7, the contact for driving CF-8 cards, wire 242, closed contact 111 of the order of hundreds, wire 2:01, contact 204-202, a suitable wire 2.05, contact 245 (controlled by solenoid 240), contact 211.-2i12 and wire 215, to terminate at the relay coils <B > 110 </B> of the order of the hundreds.
Thanks to the connection of each of the wires coming from the contacts 111 with the next upper wire ending in the relay coils of the accumulator, it is obvious that the number of hundreds which appears on the device will be modified so as to accuse the addition of one unit.
The operation of direct transfer from the order of the units to the order of the tens is carried out in the same way.
The transfer to the order of tens or of the order of tens is complicated by the fact that this order of units may have to carry out the transfer of a transfer. In other words, if the digit of the accumulator is new, before a carry-over operation, and if one adds one unit per carry-over, the number of the accumulator changes and becomes zero, and it is necessary to return one unit to the order of hundreds. This result is obtained in the event of an addition, by means of the contact 131 associated with the contact 1.11 numbered 9. The contact 13.1 closes each time the contact 111 numbered 9 closes to reveal the number nine on the ac cumulator.
The contact 131 is connected, by the wires 251 and 25'2, to two contact elements 25, 3, 'actuated by the lever 254 of the order of the units. This latter contact closes when the transfer solenoid 234 of the order of units in question has been energized so as to indicate a transfer. Contact 253 is connected directly to main line 172, thus establishing a circuit which extends from the line in question to contact 131.
This circuit is extended by wire 2! 56, the upper contact element 257, the central contact element 215,8 (which is associated with the circuit change mechanism) and the wire 259 which ends in the left element of the CF-10 contact. The central contact element of the CF-10 group in question is connected to the transfer electromagnet 2: 3.0 corresponding to the order of tens. Normally, the right contact CF-10 is closed to allow excitation of the transfer solenoid 230 in direct transfer operations, as explained previously.
When the Y position of the card (fig. 10) passes through the analyzer brushes, or, in other words, just before the actual transfer operation, the CF-10 contact moves and the circuit starts from contact 1 , 31 is thus extended by the left contact CF-10, to the transfer electromagnet 230 and the wire 154, to return to line 171.
Under these conditions, if the tens accumulator indicates nine, which means that its contact 131 is closed, and if, at the same instant, the order of the units must carry out a transfer, which is. highlighted by the closing of the contact. 253, the transfer magnet 2:30 of the order of tens will be found. excited so as to move the lever 236, which makes it possible to carry out a normal transfer of the order of tens to the order of hundreds.
The operation of subtraction is essentially analogous to the operation of addition, though, as we have seen. explained previously, with reference to FIG. 11, the circuits are rearranged so that an indicator point on the punch card results in a subtraction instead of an addition. The change of the circuits, necessary to carry out a subtraction, is obtained: for the order of hundreds, by means of an electromagnet 203, for the order of tens, by means of an electromagnet 261. and for the order of the units, by means of an electromagnet 262. When the electromagnet 203 is energized, it separates the central contact elements 202 and 212, respectively, from the upper contact elements 2:04 and 211, and brings them against the corresponding lower contact elements.
It will be noted that this change has the effect, on the one hand, of connecting the brushes 1.12 of the switch 83- to the contacts <B> 111 </B> instead of connecting them to the electromagnets 11 (l, like this was the case for the addition and, on the other hand, to connect the brushes 143 to the electromagnets 110 instead of connecting them to the contacts 111, as in the case of an addition. The description of FIG. B> It </B> which has been given above will make the operation of under tension very clear.
It will be assumed that each card 137 bearing a negative account item, or an account item to be subtracted, has a perforation in front of the first addition perforation, in a column cooperating with an analyzer brush 260. Any card presenting the. perforation in question closes a circuit starting from the line 171 and passing through the wire 174, the armature of the motor 25, the line 262, the analyzer brush 260, the wire 265, the card supply con tact CI'-15 , which closes simultaneously with the passage, under the brush 260, of the portion of the card which has the special perforation;
the circuit then passes through the wire <B> 266 </B> and the electromagnet 203, to end in the other main line 172. When the electromagnet 2i0.3 is energized, it attracts its armature and-move the contact elements 202 and 2:12, so as to. prepare the subtraction operations indicated by the card in question.
The electromagnet 203 is only momentarily energized, but its armature 2167 is held down by a spring-actuated latch 268 and thus remains engaged until. that it is released by the cam 2; 69, which is actuated by the soul born of the cards and releases the latch 26e8 once the cycle of the card is completed. The electromagnets 2'61 and 2; 62 are actuated at the same time as the electromagnet 203, in the manner of. operate the circuit change mechanism associated with the units and tens.
The carry forward operation, in a subtraction, is substantially analogous to that of the case of addition, but, in the first case, the carry is manifested by the subtraction of a unit from the order of units immediately. higher, whenever the result in an order of units is greater than the number which represented the same order of units on the counter before the subtraction. If, therefore, at the start of a subtraction, the digit of the tens of the counter was five and if, after the tension, this digit has become six, it is obvious that we have. had to subtract one unit to order: hundreds and thus effect a sort of negative carryover.
The switch 271, used for the subtraction transfers, is substituted for the switch 34 (which is used for the addition transfers) by means of the circuit change mechanism controlled by the electromagnet 203. This carry switch in case. of subtraction is similar to switch 34, but its conductive plates are: arranged for negative carryovers.
The operation of the deferral mechanism is absolutely similar to. that of the mechanism which serves for the addition, but, as the circuits have been changed for the purpose of the subtraction instead of being arranged for the addition, it is evident that the unit carried over in each case will be subtracted and not added or, in other words, this transaction is a loan instead of being a true carry-over transaction.
For the order of tens, this negative carryover can result in another carryover, because, if the order of the tens is represented on the counter by the number zero, and if one is subtracted during the subtraction, the order of tens in turn must borrow one unit from, the order of hundreds. The operation is, here, roughly the same as in the case of a direct transfer and the contact 132 closes when the zero relay contact 111 is closed. As before, a transfer from the units to the tens disposes the transfer relay of the tens to 230 and thus carries out a transfer from the tens to the hundreds.
This clearly follows from the description which has been given above of a similar carry over operation in the case of addition.
During the packing operations, the printing electromagnets 85 (fig. 12) are directly excited by the analyzer bays 13.5; however, said circuits are kept open during direct additions (without columnarization) by virtue of switch 38 which rotates only when the printing mechanism is operating and which, in turn, opens the circuits connecting the printing elements 85 to the brooms analyzers.
When said switch 38 turns, the bays 291 are coupled by the conductive part of the switch, and when an indicator point meets an analyzer brush 135, a circuit is established starting from the analyzing brush and passing: successively through the contact. star cam 195, line 196, printing electromagnet 85 and brushes 291 to end at battery B, and then back to the analyzer brush.
By virtue of this device, the printing electromagnets 85 are energized at different times, so as to operate the selection of the suitable type of printing for effecting printing, as explained previously in describing the mechanical details. of the printing system.
Printing a total also results in operating the printing mechanism; the switch 38 then operates in such a way as to complete the circuit of the electromagnet 85 up to the totalization circuit, passing through the battery B. Each order of units has a switch 37 for reading the totals. This switch is stationary and has ten conductor segments numbered zero to nine, which are connected to the corresponding contacts 111 of the associated accumulator.
During the totals taking operations, a brush 292 rotates by rubbing successively on the segments of the switch in the order and with an adjustment equivalent to those of the passage of a card through the analyzer brushes.
At the start of a total taking, one of the contacts 111 is closed, and indicates the number in the order of units. When the brush 292 meets the segment corresponding to the closed contact in question, a circuit is established which is not healthy by the electromagnet 85. For example, for the order of hundreds, this circuit starts from battery B and follows successively:
wire 245, contact 296 for the clutch of the card driver (which only closes when the card feed system is disengaged, which prevents any totalizing circuit from operating during the 'ad dition), wire 297, brush 292, the particular segment of the switch, the closed contact <B> 111, </B> and the common return wire 197, the wire 242, the solenoid of printing 85 and brushes 291, to end at the other pole of battery B. The total of the sum appearing on the accumulator is thus printed.
Immediately after printing a total (this is clear from the above description), the reset mechanism operates to clear the number in each order of units for the operation of following addition.
