Abstract
Céramique de titanate d'aluminium comportant comme phases cristallines principales une phase cristalline de titanate d'aluminium et une solution solide de cette substance, une phase cristalline de mullite et une phase cristalline de titanate de terre rare représente par RE2Ti2O7 (RE représente Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm ou Lu). La céramique de titanate d'aluminium possède des propriétés de coulée supérieures et une haute stabilité aux cycles thermiques.

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> DESCRIPTION Céramique de titanate d'aluminium et procédé pour la produire Contexte de l'invention et état de la technique La présente invention concerne une céramique de titanate- d'aluminium et un procédé pour la fabriquer. Plus particulièrement, la présente invention porte sur une céramique de titanate d'aluminium utilisée par exemple pour le revêtement de lumières, de collecteurs d'échappement (pour l'isolation thermique de l'intérieur des tuyaux d'échappement de moteurs) et de convertisseurs catalytiques, ainsi que sur un procédé pour produire ladite céramique de titanate d'aluminium. Une céramique utilisant du titanate d'aluminium comme matière de base possède un faible coefficient de dilatation thermique et un petit module de Young. Elle convient donc pour l'utilisation dans différents éléments employés dans des conditions sévères où ils doivent présenter une haute résistance aux chocs et une faible dilatation thermique, par exemple les revêtements de lumières, de collecteurs d'échappement (pour l'isolation thermique de l'intérieur de tuyaux d'échappement de moteurs à essence) et de convertisseurs catalytiques. On sait que dans les matériaux ordinaires à base de titanate d'aluminium (pour les matériaux à base de titanate d'aluminium, on emploiera ci-dessous l'abréviation matériau AT), le module de Young et la résistance aux sollicitations mécaniques sont directement <Desc/Clms Page number 2> proportionnels entre eux. C'est-à-dire que plus la résistance mécanique est élevée, plus le module de Young est grand. Inversement, si la résistance mécanique est faible, le module de Young est petit. Cela s'explique par le fait que lorsqu'un matériau AT possède une faible résistance mécanique, les grains cristallins de ce matériau sont généralement grands et il existe entre les frontières des grains un certain nombre de fissures faisant en sorte que le matériau AT peut facilement être déformé en flexion, et abaissant sa résistance mécanique. Plusieurs matériaux AT conventionnels ont un module de Young d'environ 2.000 kgf/mm2 ou plus et une résistance à EMI2.1 la flexion de 2 à 5 kgf/mm2. On a apporté différentes améliorations aux matériaux AT, en fonction de leurs applications, en y ajoutant des additifs etc. Dans ce contexte, on a proposé d'ajouté un oxyde de terre rare pour supprimer la décomposition du titanate d'aluminium à haute température et donner une résistance mécanique plus élevée. Par exemple, la publication de brevet japonais NO 3629/1982 propose une céramique à faible dilatation thermique comprenant comme phase principale un titanate d'aluminium contenant au moins un élément terre rare choisi dans le groupe comportant Y, La et Ce. La publication de brevet japonais Kokai (ouverte à consultation) NO 257165/1989 propose un titanate d'aluminium contenant un oxyde de terre rare, de la mullite et du titanate de fer, et qui est stable même à EMI2.2 des températures élevées d'environ 1. 000 à 1. 300 C. La publication de brevet japonais Kokai (ouverte à consultation) NO 25800/1990 propose une céramique à faible dilatation thermique composée d'une solution solide de titanate d'aluminium-titanate de magnésium et du titanate d'yttrium, qui est stable aux hautes températures. Les céramiques proposées dans la publication <Desc/Clms Page number 3> de brevet japonais 3629/1982 et dans la publication de brevet japonais Kokai (ouverte à consultation) No 258670/1990 contiennent un (des) élément (s) de terre rare. Elles présentent toutefois un petit nombre de fissures et possèdent donc une résistance mécanique élevée et un grand module de Young. Utilisées comme matériau coulables pour des métaux, elles présentent une faible déformation et sont incapables d'absorber les contraintes appliquées, c'est-à-dire qu'elles sont de qualité inférieure pour le coulage ; lorsqu'elles sont soumises à un cycle thermique dans lequel les alternances de chauffage à haute température et de refroidissement sont répétées, de nouvelles fissures apparaissent aux frontières des grains et leurs résistances en sont diminuées. Le titanate d'aluminium proposé dans la demande de brevet japonais Kokai (ouverte à consultation) NO 257165/1989 contient de la mullite et un oxyde de terre rare. Toutefois, il est de qualité inférieure pour la coulée, de manière similaire aux céramiques ci-dessus, et possède de plus une stabilité insuffisante aux cycles thermiques parce qu'il présente des fissures dans les grains cristallins et aux frontières des grains. Résumé de l'invention La présente invention a pour but de proposer un matériau AT ne présentant pas les invconvénients cités ci-dessus des matériaux AT conventionnels et possédant des propriétés supérieures de coulée ainsi qu'une grande stabilité aux cycles thermiques. Selon la présente invention, on propose une céramique de titanate d'aluminium comprenant comme phases cristallines principales une phase cristalline de titanate d'aluminium et une solution solide de cette substance, une phase cristalline de mullite et une phase <Desc/Clms Page number 4> cristalline de titanate de terre rare représentée par RE2Ti207 (RE repréxente Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm ou Lu). Selon la présente invention, on propose de plus un procédé pour produire un titanate d'aluminium comprenant les opérations de préparer une pluralité de poudres de matières premières avec un diamètre moyen des EMI4.1 particules de 5 m ou moins, choisies dans le groupe comportant une source de A1203, une source de Tri02, une source de Sitz, une source de Fie203, une source de MgO, une source d'élément terre rare, une source de mullite et du titanate d'aluminium, mélanger les poudres de matières premières pour obtenir un mélange, façonner le mélange pour obtenir un corps formé, sécher le corps façonné pour obtenir un corps sec et fritter le corps sec. La céramique de titanate d'aluminium de la présente invention possède d'excellentes propriétés de coulée et une grande stabilité aux cycles thermiques parce que la céramique de titanate d'aluminium est constituée comme ci-dessus et comporte comme phases cristallines principales une phase cristalline de titanate d'aluminium et une solution solide de cette substance, une phase cristalline de mullite et une phase cristalline de titanate de terre rare représentée par RE2Ti207 (RE représente Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm ou Lu). La raison n'est pas claire, mais on pense que les choses se passent comme suit. Lorsqu'un matériau à base de titanate d'aluminium fritté contient de la mullite et un titanate de terre rare, le titanate de terre rare prend la forme d'une structure dendritique et est présent aux frontières entre les cristaux de titanate d'aluminium et les cristaux de mullite, et les lie fortement ; lorsqu'un matériau de titanate d'aluminium fritté de ce genre est soumis à un cycle thermique et subit une contrainte thermique, il n'apparaît pas aux frontières des grains de fissures comme celles qui sont <Desc/Clms Page number 5> ordinairement engendrées à ces frontières des grains, et il apparaît des fissures dans les cristaux de titanate d'aluminium et les cristaux de mullite et ces fissures contribuent à améliorer les propriétés de coulée ; de plus, comme la liaison entre les cristaux est forte, comme on l'a dit ci-dessus, il n'apparaît pas de fissures aux frontières des grains durant le cycle thermique et on obtient donc une grande stabilité aux cycles thermiques. Dans la présente invention, l'utilisation de substances de départ en fines poudres d'une granulométrie moyenne de 5 m ou moins permet la production de la céramique de titanate d'aluminium visée parce qutelle donne lieu (1) à une réaction active entre le Tri02 et le composé de terre rare et (2) à la formation conséquente de titanate de terre rare de structure dendritique aux forntières des grains. Les phases cristallines dans la présente céramique de titanate d'aluminium consistent principalement en une phase cristalline de titanate d'aluminium et sa solution solide, une phase cristalline de mullite et une phase cristalline de titanate de terre rares. La céramique à base de titanate d'aluminium de la présente invention peut de plus comporter d'autres phases cristallines de rutile, corindon, etc. Brève description des dessins La fig. 1 montre la relation entre la déformation et la charge dans un essai de résistance à la flexion à quatre points (JIS R 1601) d'un échantillon de céramique. La fig. 2 montre les diffractions des rayons X des matériaux AT frittés obtenues dans les exemples et dans les exemples de comparaison. La fig. 3 est une micrographie électronique du type à balayage (agrandissement = 800) montrant la <Desc/Clms Page number 6> structure cristalline du matériau AT fritté obtenu dans un exemple de la présente invention. La fig. 4 est une micrographie électronique du type à balayage (agrandissement = 800) montrant la structure cristalline du matériau AT fritté obtenu dans un exemple de comparaison de la présente invention. Description détaillée de l'invention Les composants de base constituant la céramique de titanate d'aluminium de la présente EMI6.1 invention sont six composants de Al, TiO, SiO, FeOg, MgO et RE203, et les phases cristallines de la présente céramique de titanate d'aluminium consistent en trois phases de titanate d'aluminium (Al2TiO5). Au moins une partie de la phase titanate d'aluminium est une solution solide de titanate d'aluminium. Le composant RE de RE2Ti207 est un élément terre rare choisi parmi Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm et Lu et ne se rapporte à aucun autre élément terre rare. Les éléments terres rares autres que Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm et Lu ont tous des grands rayons ioniques et sont incapables de former un titanate de terre rare, ils se vitrifient aux frontières des grains, rendant impossible l'obtention d'un matériau AT désiré et ne sont donc pas utilisés dans la présente invention. Le fait que la céramique de titanate d'aluminium de la présente invention est principalement composée des trois phases cristallines citées ci-dessus, et que l'une de ces phases est une phase cristalline de RE2Ti2O7, est mis en évidence par la diffraction des rayons X des présents exemples, montrée à la fig. 2, et la micrographie électronique du type à balayage de la fig. 3. La composition de la présente céramique de titanate d'aluminium, exprimée sur base des oxydes, est de 40 à 60% en poids de Au203, 30 à 45% en poids de Tio2, <Desc/Clms Page number 7> 1 à 10% en poids de sio2, 0 à 4% en poids de Fe2O3, 0, 1 à 1, 5% en poids de MgO et 0,1 à 10% en poids de RE203. Lorsque la teneur de chaque composant oxyde sort de la gamme ci-dessus, il est impossible d'obtenir une céramique de titanate d'aluminium de propriétés supérieures tant pour la coulée que pour la stabilité aux cycles thermiques. En particulier lorsque la teneur en RE203 est inférieure à 0, 1% en poids, la céramique de titanate d'aluminium résultante possède une stabilité inférieure aux cycles thermiques. La source (matière première) de chaque composant oxyde est décrite. Comme source de Al, on peut utiliser par exemple une a-alumine, de la bauxite calcinée, du sulfate d'aluminium, du chlorure d'aluminium et de l'hydroxyde d'aluminium. Comme source de Ti02, on peut utiliser par exemple du rutile et de l'anatase. Comme source de Spi02, on peut utiliser par exemple de la tectite, du kaolin, de la mullite et du quartz. Comme source de MgO, on peut utiliser par exemple de la magnésite, du nitrate de magnésium et de l'oxyde de magnésium. Comme source de RE2O3, on peut utiliser par exemple les oxydes, les chlorures, les carbonates, les nitrates et les hydroxydes des éléments terres rares cités ci-dessus. Comme source de AlTiO, on peut utiliser (A) une poudre de titanate d'aluminium obtenue par mélange par voie humide ou à sec des sources de Al2O3 et de Tio2 puis calciner et broyer le mélange, ou (B) un titanate d'aluminium obtenu en soumettant une solution contenant EMI7.1 de l'aluminium et du titanium à une synthèse et une calcination. La source de AlTiO peut contenir au moins un oxyde choisi parmi SiO2, Fe, MgO et RE203. Les matières premières utilisées dans la présente invention contiennent la source de A12TiOs citée <Desc/Clms Page number 8> ci-dessus en une quantité de préférence égale à 5% en poids ou plus, et de préférence en une quantité de 20% en poids ou plus par rapport à toutes les matières EMI8.1 K premières. Dans la présente invention, les matières premières, chacune à l'état de fine poudre, sont mélangées selon la composition ci-dessus, puis façonnées dans la forme désirée et frittées pour obtenir une céramique à faible dilatation thermique. Dans ce cas, les EMI8.2 matières premières, en particulier la source de Trio2 et la source de AlTiOs, ont de préférence un diamètre moyen des particules d'environ 5 gm ou moins. Lorsque les diamètres moyens des particules des matières premières sont supérieurs à 5 Am, la réactivité entre les matières premières est faible et il n'y a pas de précipitation de titanate de terre rare, et on obtient une céramique de titanate d'aluminium de basse stabilité aux cycles thermiques. Comme méthode de façonnage, on peut utiliser toute méthode de façonnage connue comme le pressage à chaud, le moulage par coulée, le pressage au caoutchouc ou autre analogue. La température de frittage peut aller d'environ 1.400 à 1. 650 C, comme la température appliquée pour le frittage des céramiques ordinaires. Pour le façonnage et le frittage, on peut ajouter de manière appropriée un adjuvant de façonnage, un défloculant, un adjuvant de frittage, etc. La présente invention est décrite plus en détail ci-dessous à l'aide d'exemples. Toutefois, la présente invention n'est aucunement limitée aux exemples suivants. Dans les exemples, on a mesuré la contrainte de rupture et la stabilité aux cycles thermiques selon les méthodes suivantes. <Desc/Clms Page number 9> (1) Contrainte de rupture On a mesuré la contrainte de rupture en applicant la même méthode d'essai que pour la mesure de résistance à la flexion à quatre points des céramiques, spécifiée par JIS R 1601. C'est-à-dire que pour un échantillon ayant une épaisseur "t" (mm), on a relevé la déformation présentée par l'échantillon au cours de la période allant du début de l'application de la charge à la destruction de l'échantillon, dans le graphique de la figure 1 montrant la relation entre la déformation et la charge, et présentant une distance"a" (mm) d'un point 1 (début de l'application de la charge) à un point 4 (intersection entre la ligne de base 3 et une perpendiculaire à la ligne de base 3 tracée à partir d'un point correspondant à la destruction 2) ; puis on a calculé la contrainte de rupture de l'échantillon à partir de"a"et"t"à inaide de la formule suivante : Contrainte de rupture = 6t. a/1000 Incidemment, cette contrainte de rupture est le quotient de la résistance à la flexion divisée par le module de Young déterminé sur base de la déformation au point de destruction. Une contrainte de rupture plus grande correspond à des propriétés de coulée supérieures. (2) Stabilité aux cycles thermiques Un échantillon d'une longueur Lo (mm) a été chauffé durant 20 minutes dans un four à 900 C, puis sorti et refroidi par soufflage d'air durant 10 minutes. Cette procédure de cycle thermique a été répétée 600 fois. Ensuite on a mesuré la longueur LI (mm) de l'échantillon. On a également mesuré les résistances à la flexion à quatre points ao (avant le cycle thermique) et al (après le cycle thermique) selon JIS R 1601. A partir des valeurs obtenues pour Lo, LI, ao <Desc/Clms Page number 10> et #1, on a calculé la variation dimensionnelle (%) résultant du cycle thermique et la détérioration de la résistance au cycle thermique (%) de l'échantillon à l'aide des formules suivantes. Variation dimensionnelle du cycle thermique (%) = [ (Ll-LO)/Lo] x 100 Détérioration de la résistance au cycle thermique (%) = EMI10.1 [ (i-tTo)/o] x 100 <Desc/Clms Page number 11> Exemples 1-4 Les fines poudres constituant la matière première, reprises dans le tableau 1, ont été pesées pour produire une composition donnée. A cette composition, on a ajouté 22% en poids dteau et 0, 5% en poids d'un défloculant du type acide polyacrylique. Le mélange a été agité dans un broyeur à cuve durant 5 heures pour obtenir un mélange homogène. A ce mélange, on a ajouté 1,5% en poids d'un liant et on a agité et dégazé sous vide. Le mélange résultant a été moulé par coulée dans un moule en gypse pour obtenir une matière formée. On a calciné la matière formée sous pression normale à une température indiquée dans le tableau 1 pour obtenir quatre matériaux AT frittés. La diffraction des rayons X des matériaux AT frittés obtenus dans les exemples 1 à 3 sont représentées à la fig. 2. Comme on le voit à la fig. 2, la phase cristalline d'un titanate de terre rare est présente dans chaque spectre, c'est-à-dire YbzTiz07 dans l'exemple 1, Y2Ti2O7 dans l'exemple 2 et ErzTiz07 dans l'exemple 3. La fig. 3 montre la micrographie électronique du type à balayage, de la structure cristalline du matériau AT fritté obtenu dans la fig. 1. Dans la fig. 3, on observe une phase cristalline de YbTiOy brillant d'une couleur blanche sur la surface des grains de cristal, ce qui confirme la présence d'une phase cristalline d'oxyde de titanate de terre rare, de manière similaire au cas de la diffraction des rayons X. Pour chacun des matériaux AT frittés, on a mesuré la contrainte de rupture et la stabilité aux cycles thermiques. Les résultats sont repris dans le tableau 1. Le"A"qui représente dans le tableau 1 une source de AL, TiOs est une poudre de titanate d'aluminium broyé frittée d'une granulométrie de 5 Mm ou moins, <Desc/Clms Page number 12> EMI12.1 obtenue par mélange à sec d'une source d'Al203 et d'une source de Tri02, et calcination et frittage de ce mélange. Dans le même tableau 1, le"B"représentant également une source de Al2TiO5 est une poudre de titanate d'aluminium d'une granulométrie de 1 Mm obtenue en soumettant une solution aqueuse d'une source d'Al203 et d'une source de TiO2 à une synthèse et à une calcination. Incidemment, le matériau AT de l'exemple de comparaison 6 a été obtenu par le procédé décrit dans la demande de brevet japonais Kokai (ouverte à consultation) NO 257165/1989 citée ci-dessus, et le matériau AT fritté de l'exemple de comparaison 7 a été obtenu par le procédé décrit dans la demande de brevet japonais Kokai (ouverte à consultation) NO 258670/1990 cité ci-dessus. Les diffractions des rayons X des matériaux AT frittés obtenus dans les exemples de comparaison 2-4 sont montrées dans la fig. 2. Comme le montre la fig. 2, lorsqu'on utilisait un oxyde de terre rare de Pr, Nd ou Sm, on n'observait pas de phase cristalline de titanate de terre rare, ce qui indique qu'il ne se formait pas de phase cristalline de terre rare. La micrographie électronique du type à balayage de la structure cristalline du matériau AT obtenu dans l'exemple de comparaison 2 est montrée à la fig. 4. Dans la fig. 4, contrairement au cas de la fig. 3, il n'y a pas de zone blanche brillante et la présence de la phase cristalline de Pr2Ti07 n'a pas été confirmée. On a également mesuré la contrainte de rupture et la stabilité aux cycles thermiques des matériaux AT frittés obtenus. Les résultats sont repris dans les tableaux 5 et 6. Dans les tableaux 5 et 6,"A" et"B"représentent les mêmes sources de Al2TiOs que dans le tableau 1. Comme le montrent les exemples ci-dessus et les exemples de comparaison, les matériaux AT frittés de la présente invention possèdent des contraintes de <Desc/Clms Page number 21> rupture équivalentes ou supérieures à celles des matériaux AT frittés conventionnels des exemples comparatifs et des stabilités très élevées aux cycles thermiques (la détérioration de la résistance est de 0% ou moins et la variation dimensionnelle de 0,3% ou moins dans tous les cas). La présente céramique de titanate d'aluminium, qui est un matériau AT fritté, possède des propriétés de coulée supérieures et une haute stabilité aux cycles thermiques, et convient pour être utilisée comme matériau coulable pour l'application sur du métal, par exemple un revêtement de lumières de moteur à essence et un matériau pour lumières de moteur. Claims (6)
- REVENDICATIONS 1. Céramique de titanate d'aluminium comportant une phase cristalline de titanate d'aluminium et une solution solide de cette substance, une phase cristalline de mullite et une phase cristalline de titanate de terre rare représentée par RE2Ti207 (RE représente Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm ou Lu).
- 2. Céramique de titanate d'aluminium selon la revendication 1, comportant de plus au moins une phase cristalline choisie parmi le rutile et le corindon.
- 3. Céramique de titanate d'aluminiuin comportant 40 à 60% en poids de Al203, 30 à 45% en poids de TiO, 1 à 10% en poids de Sitz, 0 à 4% en poids de Fe203, 0,1 à en poids de MgO et 0,1 à 10% en poids de RE203 (RE représente Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm ou Lu).
- 4. Procédé pour produire un titanate d'aluminium, comportant les opérations de préparer une pluralité de poudres de matières premières d'une granulométrie moyenne de 5 jum ou moins, choisies dans le EMI24.1 groupe comportant une source d'A'203, une source de Tri02, une source de Spi02, une source de Fe203, une source de MgO, une source d'élément terre rare, une source de mullite et une source de titanate d'aluminium, mélanger les poudres servant de matière première pour obtenir un mélange, former le mélange pour obtenir un corps formé, sécher le corps formé pour obtenir un corps séché et fritter le corps séché.
- 5. Procédé pour produire un titanate d'aluminium selon la revendication 4, dans lequel les matières premières contiennent la source de A12Tios à <Desc/Clms Page number 25> raison de 5% en poids ou plus par rapport à la totalité des matières premières.
- 6. Procédé pour produire un titanate d'aluminium selon la revendication 4, dans lequel les matières premières contiennent la source de Al2TiO5 à raison de 20% en poids ou plus par rapport à la totalité des matières premières.
