Un catalizador para la oxidación selectiva de etano o mezclas de etano y etileno más oxígeno, que comprende los elementos Mo, Pd, X e Y en las relaciones a:b.c:d expresadas en átomos-gramo en combinación con oxígeno de fórmula: MoaPdbXcYd, donde los símbolos X e Y tienen los siguientes significados: X representa uno o varios elementos que se seleccionan del grupo formado por Cr, Mn, Nb, Ta, Ti, V y W; Y representa uno o varios de los elementos que se seleccionan del grupo formado por B, Al, Ga, In, Pt, Zn, Cd, Bi, Ce, Co, Rh, Ir, Cu, Ag, Au, Fe, Ru, Os, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zr, Hf, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Si, Sn, Tl y U; los índices a, b, c y d representan las relaciones expresadas en átomos-gramo de los correspondientes elementos, donde a = 1, b > 0, c > 0 y d = 0-2, con la condición de que el catalizador contiene como X al menos los elementos V y Nb y con la condición de que Mo y los elementos X no derivan de un heteropoliácido.
