Definitions
- the present invention relates to a diaphragm used for an electrolyte tank of a redox flow battery.
- a redox flow battery is an electrolyte bath that is separated into a positive electrode chamber and a negative electrode chamber by a diaphragm that allows hydrogen ions to permeate but not electrolyte ions. It is a secondary battery of a type that is circulated by a pump and performs charge / discharge using an oxidation-reduction reaction.
- the redox flow battery is expected to be a secondary battery for storing large power because it can be easily enlarged.
- vanadium compounds have been widely used as battery active materials for redox flow batteries because they have excellent electromotive force and battery capacity and can be easily regenerated even when the cathode and anode solutions are mixed.
- oxidation or reduction is performed between + 4-valent and + 5-valent V ions in the positive electrode chamber during charge / discharge.
- oxidation or reduction is performed between + 2-valent V ions and + 3-valent V ions.
- the diaphragm for the redox flow battery is further required to have excellent durability such that the performance of the diaphragm does not deteriorate due to repeated contact with the electrolyte solution for a long period of time and repeated charging and discharging.
- the VV redox flow battery diaphragm is required to have high oxidation resistance because it is in contact with pentavalent V ions having strong oxidizing power.

- JP 2000-235849 A Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 10-162853 US7,927,731B2
- the voltage efficiency is about 78%, and the thickness of the diaphragm is 600 ⁇ m to 1.5 mm. Therefore, further improvement in voltage efficiency is required, and further reduction in membrane resistance of the diaphragm is required.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a diaphragm for a redox flow battery that has excellent oxidation resistance that sufficiently satisfies recent demands, is excellent in selective permeability, and can achieve high energy efficiency, particularly high current efficiency.
- the present inventor results in selective permeability to ions when the pore diameter of the micropores of the porous membrane is made very small, and thus for batteries such as redox flow batteries. It was found that it can be used as a diaphragm. And since the porous membrane made from a fluororesin, especially the porous membrane made from PTFE has the outstanding oxidation resistance, when the fluororesin porous membrane was used, it discovered that the above-mentioned subject was achieved.
- the fluororesin includes not only a synthetic resin obtained by polymerizing fluorine-containing olefins, but also a resin containing the synthetic resin as a main component (for example, a resin containing 50% by mass or more of the synthetic resin). included.
- the diaphragm for a redox flow battery according to the present invention includes a porous membrane having an average flow pore size of 100 nm or less, a thickness of 500 ⁇ m or less, and an air flow rate of 0.1 ml / s ⁇ cm 2 or more.
- the diaphragm for a redox flow battery according to the present invention has selective permeability to ions and easily transmits hydrogen ions but hardly transmits electrolyte ions such as V ions.
- the porous membrane in the present invention does not have an ionic functional group. However, since the pore diameter of the porous membrane in the present invention is very small, it is possible to separate ions based on the size of ions, and therefore, it is considered that selective permeability is exhibited. As a result, the redox flow battery using the redox flow battery membrane according to the present invention can achieve low membrane resistance, high current efficiency, and high energy efficiency. Moreover, if the porous film in the present invention is made of a fluororesin, it has high chemical stability, excellent durability, and particularly excellent oxidation resistance.
- the average flow pore size is a value measured in accordance with ASTM F316-86, and a propylene, 1,1,2,3,3,3 hexafluoric acid oxide is used as the pore distribution measuring device and the liquid. And obtained as follows.
- the air flow rate is obtained by measuring galley seconds.
- the galley second is an index representing the air permeability of the membrane defined as the time (seconds) required to allow 100 ml of air to pass through the membrane with an effective membrane area of 6.42 square centimeters and a differential pressure of 1.22 kPa. Yes, measured using a digital Oken type air permeability tester.
- the average flow pore size of the porous film is preferably 30 nm or less.
- the average flow pore size is smaller, the selective permeability to ions is improved and the permeation of electrolyte ions can be prevented.
- high current efficiency can be obtained when used as a battery diaphragm.

- the diaphragm for a redox flow battery according to the present invention is preferably used for a Ti—Mn, Ti—Fe, Fe—Cr, Zn—Ce, Zn—Br, or Zn—Cl redox flow battery.
- the battery active material is larger than that of the VV redox flow battery. Therefore, even if the average flow pore size of the porous membrane is 100 nm or less, it is possible to prevent a decrease in selective permeability to ions.
- the redox flow battery membrane according to the present invention preferably further includes a porous support membrane for supporting the porous membrane.
- the porous membrane In order to increase the hydrogen ion permeability of the diaphragm to lower the membrane resistance and to obtain high voltage efficiency, the porous membrane preferably has a high porosity (ratio of volume occupied by pores in the membrane).
- the membrane is preferably thin.
- the diaphragm for a battery is required to have mechanical strength that can withstand the pressure of the electrolytic solution. However, increasing the porosity or thinning the film decreases the mechanical strength. Therefore, a method of supporting the porous membrane with a porous support membrane that has a mechanical strength that can withstand the pressure of the electrolyte and the like and that does not impede the permeation of ions is preferably employed. Strength is given.
- porous support membrane that has a mechanical strength that can withstand the pressure of the electrolytic solution and does not inhibit the permeation of ions
- a resin excellent in mechanical strength (and chemical stability) for example, a fluorine-based resin such as PTFE
- a porous membrane having a through hole having a diameter much larger than the pores of the porous membrane is preferably used.
- the range of the thickness and the porosity of the porous support membrane is not particularly limited, but is selected from a range in which sufficient mechanical strength is obtained without impeding the permeation of ions.
- the method for supporting the porous membrane with the porous support membrane is not particularly limited, but is usually performed by a method in which the porous membrane is bonded to the surface of the porous support membrane.
- the porous support film may be bonded to both surfaces of the porous film, that is, the porous film may be sandwiched between the porous support films. Alternatively, the porous film may be bonded to both surfaces of the porous support film.
- the mechanical membrane is made of a PTFE porous material having a large pore diameter by, for example, a method comprising the following steps 1 to 3.
- a membrane for a redox flow battery in which a PTFE porous membrane having a minute pore diameter is supported on a support membrane having excellent strength can be obtained.
- the porous membrane and the porous support membrane may be made of different fluororesins.
- Step 1 A PTFE non-porous membrane is formed by sintering PTFE powder.
- Step 2 On the PTFE porous membrane having a predetermined mechanical strength, the PTFE non-porous membrane formed in Step 1 is bonded using a fluororesin adhesive to form a composite.
- Step 3 The formed composite is stretched.
- the surface of the porous membrane is preferably treated with an ion exchange resin.
- the surface of the porous membrane is treated with an ion exchange resin, current efficiency can be improved.
- “the surface of the porous membrane is treated with an ion exchange resin” means that a cation exchange resin is applied to the surface of the porous membrane.
- a fluororesin-based cation exchange resin is preferably used.

As a result, by using this redox flow battery diaphragm, it is possible to produce a battery having a life sufficiently satisfying recent requirements and having high energy efficiency, particularly high current efficiency.
- the present invention is particularly suitably used as a diaphragm for a VV redox flow battery.
- FIG. 1 conceptually shows an enlarged cross section of the redox flow battery diaphragm.
- the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is bonded and supported on the surface of a porous support membrane 20.
- a plurality of micropores 12 are formed in the fluororesin porous membrane 10, and a plurality of pores 22 are formed in the porous support membrane 20.
- the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is on the electrolyte side where the + 4-valent or + 5-valent V ions are present, that is, the positive electrode chamber side, and the porous support membrane 20 is + 2-valent or + 3-valent.
- the battery diaphragm is disposed so as to be on the electrolyte side where the V ions are present, that is, on the negative electrode chamber side.
- a porous support membrane can be provided on both sides of the fluororesin porous membrane, or a fluororesin porous membrane can be provided on both sides of the porous support membrane. Is possible.
- the micropore 12 is a through-hole penetrating the front and back of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 (not necessarily penetrating linearly).
- the diameter a of the micropores 12 is considered to be close to the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10.
- the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is preferably 100 nm or less.
- the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is more preferably 30 nm or less. Preferably, it is 10 nm or less.
- V ions are more difficult to permeate the fluororesin porous membrane 10, so that the selective permeability to the ions of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is further improved.
- examples of the method for setting the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 to 100 nm or less include the method described in “(2) Production method” below.
- the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is 30 nm or less, except that the resin raw material is changed, and the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is 100 nm or less. The same method can be used.
- the thickness b of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is thin.
- V ions are easily transmitted. Therefore, an optimum thickness is selected in consideration of both.
- the permeability of hydrogen ions 1 depends on the porosity of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 and cannot be generally stated. However, if the thickness of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is 500 ⁇ m or less, High voltage efficiency can be obtained.
- the porosity of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is also preferable in order to obtain high voltage efficiency (low membrane resistance) because the permeability of hydrogen ions 1 increases as the porosity increases. However, when the porosity is increased, V ions are easily transmitted. Therefore, an optimal porosity is selected in consideration of both.
- the air flow rate of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is 0.1 ml / s ⁇ cm 2 or more, high voltage efficiency can be obtained.
- the air flow rate of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is 0.2 ml / s ⁇ cm 2 or more.
- the method described in the following “(2) Production method” and the like can be mentioned. If the resin raw material or the manufacturing parameters are changed, the air flow rate of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 can be changed.
- the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is a PTFE porous membrane, the nonporous membrane formed by heating and pressurizing the PTFE powder into a sheet shape as described above is produced.
- the porosity is increased, the diameter a of the micropore 12 is also increased. Therefore, the size of the porosity is limited also from this point.
- the porosity is preferably about 20 to 50%.
- the thickness c and the porosity of the porous support membrane 20 are selected within a range in which sufficient mechanical strength is obtained without impeding ion permeability.
- the pore diameter of the pores 22 is also selected from a range much larger than the diameter a of the micropores 12 so as not to impede ion permeability.
- the pore diameter of the pores 22 is usually about 0.2 to 10 ⁇ m and the thickness c is about 20 to 500 ⁇ m.
- the surface of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 on the positive electrode chamber side may be subjected to a hydrophilic treatment by applying a cation exchange resin (not shown).
- the current efficiency can be improved by performing the hydrophilic treatment.
- the redox flow battery membrane in which the porous membrane 10 made of a fluororesin is supported on the porous support membrane 20 is disclosed in JP-A-2009-179802, JP-A-2011-52175. And the method described in International Publication No. 2008/018400. For example, it can be produced by a method comprising the following steps 1) to 6).
- a PTFE dispersion for example, AD911 manufactured by Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.
- an aluminum foil having a thickness of, for example, 50 ⁇ m is spread and fixed on a glass plate so as not to be wrinkled, and PTFE powder is dispersed in a dispersion medium such as water.
- the above PTFE dispersion is stretched uniformly over the entire surface of the aluminum foil using a slide shaft or the like.
- 3) A non-porous PTFE thin film fixed on an aluminum foil is spread and fixed so that there are no wrinkles on the glass plate and the non-porous PTFE thin film is on top, and the melting point is lower than that of PTFE.
- thermoplastic fluororesin for example, tetrafluoroethylene / perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether copolymer (PFA)

- the composite is stretched uniaxially or biaxially.
- the nonporous PTFE thin film becomes a PTFE porous membrane having micropores with a uniform pore diameter, and the PTFE porous membrane 10 is supported on the porous support membrane 20 made of a PTFE porous body.
- a diaphragm for a redox flow battery can be produced.
- the average flow pore size of the fluororesin porous membrane 10 is 100 nm or less, preferably 30 nm or less. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 1, since H (hydrogen) ions 1 (actually hydronium ions, etc.) are small, they can pass through the micropores 12 formed in the fluororesin porous membrane 10. V ions 3 and 5 cannot pass through the micropores 12 because they are large. As a result, the fluororesin porous membrane 10 exhibits selective permeability.
- +5 valent V ion has a structure as shown in FIG. 2, and the radius of the sphere represented by a circle in FIG. 2 is about several nanometers, but the diameter is 100 nm due to further coordination of water molecules. It seems that it is difficult for micropores to pass through. The same applies to other V ions.
- the addition amount of the cation exchange resin is preferably 5% by mass or more, more preferably 10% by mass or more, with respect to the fluororesin porous membrane.

A nonporous fluororesin thin film) was formed. The average thickness of the fluororesin thin film calculated from the weight difference per unit area of the aluminum foil before and after the fluororesin thin film was formed and the true specific gravity of the fluororesin (2.25 g / cm 3 ) was about 2 ⁇ m. It was.

FIG. 3 shows the relationship between current efficiency and average flow hole diameter.
- FIG. 3 shows that the current efficiency improves as the average flow hole diameter decreases. As the average flow pore size is smaller, the permeation of V ions is hindered, and as a result, the current efficiency is improved. From FIG. 3, a current efficiency of about 70% is obtained at an average flow pore diameter of 40 nm, a current efficiency of 80% or greater is obtained at an average flow pore diameter of 30 nm, and a current efficiency of 90% or greater is obtained at an average flow pore diameter of 10 nm.
