図1に示すように、第1実施形態のリヤサスペンション1は、いわゆるH型トーションビーム式サスペンションであり、左右のトレーリングアーム2,3や、両トレーリングアーム2,3の中間部を連結するトーションビーム4、懸架ばねである左右一対のコイルスプリング5、左右一対のダンパ6等から構成されており、左右のリヤホイール7,8を懸架している。ダンパ6は、エネルギ回生ダンパであり、トランクルーム内等に設置されたダンパECU9と電流制御ユニット10とによって発電や減衰力が可変制御される。
図2に示すように、第1実施形態のダンパ6は、モノチューブ式(ド・カルボン式)であり、作動油が充填された円筒状のシリンダ12と、このシリンダ12に対して軸方向に摺動するダンパロッド13と、ダンパロッド13の先端に装着されてシリンダ12内を上部液室(一側液室)14と下部液室(他側液室)15とに区画するピストン16と、シリンダ12の下部に高圧ガス室17を画成するフリーピストン18と、ダンパロッド13等への塵埃の付着を防ぐカバー19と、フルバウンド時における緩衝を行うバンプストップ20とを主要構成要素としている。
図3に示すように、ピストン16は、シリンダ12の内周面に摺動自在に内嵌したハウジング31と、ハウジング31の内側に収容/固着されたステータ32と、ステータ32の内側に回転自在に保持されたロータ33と、ハウジング31の上下面に設けられた減衰バルブ34,35とを備えている。
図4にも示すように、ステータ32は、非磁性体(アルミニウム等)からなる円筒状のステータ本体41と、ステータ本体41に埋設された固定子巻線42とを有している。固定子巻線42は、ステータ本体41の円周上に30°間隔で上下4本ずつ(すなわち、計48本)配置されている。また、ステータ本体41には、ハウジング31のオリフィス37a,37bに連続するオリフィス43が穿設されている。
電流制御ユニット10は、昇圧回路やPWM回路、スイッチ素子等から構成され、車載バッテリ51とダンパ6との間に介装されている。電流制御ユニット10は、ダンパECU9から入力した制御信号によって制御され、ダンパ6の発生電流を車載バッテリ51に供給する、あるいは車載バッテリ51からダンパ6に駆動電流を供給する。
自動車が走行を開始すると、路面の凹凸やうねり、車体のロール動やピッチ動等に応じ、ダンパ6がテレスコピック作動する(すなわち、ピストン16がシリンダ12内を軸方向に移動する)し、作動油が上部液室14と下部液室15との間で移動する。例えば、ダンパ6が縮み側にテレスコピック作動した場合、ピストン16がシリンダ12に対して下降し、図3に示すように、一部の作動油がオリフィス37b,43,37aを下方から上方に通過して減衰力を発生し、一部の作動油が流通孔38a,38bを介してステータ本体41の中空部を上方に通過する。

第3実施形態も、その全体構成は前述した第1実施形態と同様であるが、ピストンの構成が異なっている。すなわち、図7に示すように、第3実施形態では、発電用のピストン16と減衰用のピストン61とを個別に設けるとともに、ロータ33にプロペラ形のスクリュー部62を採用している。
