Abstract

本発明は、少なくともヨウ素染色され、かつ一軸延伸されたポリビニルアルコール系フィルムからなる偏光子であって、前記偏光子の単体透過率が43%以上、偏光度が99.9%以上であり、波長440nmにおける平行透過率(Tp)と直交透過率(Tc)から算出される二色比が30以上であることを特徴とする色相の良好な偏光子である。

Description

明 細 書 偏光子、 その製造方法、 偏光板、 光学フィルムおよび画像表示装置 技術分野
本発明は、 偏光子およびその製造方法に関する。 また本発明は当該偏光子を用 いた偏光板、 さ らには当該偏光板等を用いた光学フィルムに関する。 さらには当 該偏光板、 光学フィルム等を用いた液晶表示装置、 有機 E L表示装置、 P D P等 の画像表示装置に関する。 背景技術
従来より、 液晶表示装置等の画像表示装置には、 偏光子に ト リァセチルセル口 —スフイルムなどの保護フィルムが貼合された偏光板が用いられている。 前記偏 光子は、 ポリ ビエルアルコール系フィル Λをヨウ素などの二色性染料で染色した 後、 ホウ酸水溶液中で延伸することにより製造されている。 偏光板の色相は、 液 晶表示装置の色相に大き く影響する。
しかしながら、 従来よ り用いられている偏光板は、 平行ニコルにおける透過ス ぺク トルでは波長 4 0 0 n m〜 5 0 0 n mの透過率が低いため、 平行ニコルにお いて色相が黄色くなる。 一方、 直交ニコルにおける透過スぺク トルでは波長 4 0 0 n m〜 5 0 0 n mの透過率が高いため、 直交ニコルにおいて色相が青く なる。 そのため、 これらの偏光板を用いた従来の液晶表示装置では、 白表示を行ったと きは若干黄色くなり、 黒表示を行ったときには青くなる問題があった。
白表示および黒表示をニュートラルグレーにする方法と して、 ヨウ素染色され 、 かつ一軸延伸されたポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムを、 所定量のヨウ化カリ ゥムを含有するホウ酸水溶液中で処理する とともに、 各工程の処理温度を制御す る方法が開示されている (たとえば、 特開 2 0 0 2— 1 6 9 0 2 4号公報)。 し かし、 前記公報に記載の方法では、 平行ニコル、 直交ニコルのいずれの場合にも 十分に色相が良好であるとはいえない。
またヨウ素系偏光子は耐久性が十分ではなく、 加熱環境下におかれた場合に、 偏光子 2枚を直交-コルで配置した場合に長波長の偏光抜けが起こ り 、 赤く変色 する問題がある。 この問題に対して、 偏光子に適度な量の亜鉛イオンを含有させ ることが提案されている (たとえば、 特許第 1 3 0 8 9 1 9号明細書, 特許第 1 6 0 6 9 9 9号明細書, 特開 2 0 0 2— 3 5 5 1 2号公報)。 これら特許文献で は、 高温条件下で放置した際に発生する長波長の偏光抜けを防止できることが示 されている。 しかし、 これら特許文献では偏光子に亜鉛イオンを含有させる必要 があるため、 偏光子表面に亜鉛が析出したり、 濃度管理が煩雑であったり、 皮膚 への刺激があるなどの問題がある。 発明の開示
本発明は、 色相の良好な偏光子を提供することを目的とする。 また本発明は色 相が良好で、 耐久性の良い偏光子を提供することを目的とする。
また本発明は、 色相の良好な偏光子の製造方法を提供することを目的とする。 また本発明は色相が良好で、 耐久性の良い偏光子の製造方法を提供するこ とを目 的とする。
また本発明は前記偏光子を用いた偏光板を提供することを目的とする。 さ らに 本発明は、 前記偏光子、 偏光板を用いた光学フィルムを提供すること、 さ らには 前記偏光子、 偏光板、 光学フィルムを用いた画像表示装置を提供することを目的 とする。
本発明者らは、 前記課題を解決すべく鋭意検討を重ねた結果、 以下に示す偏光 子および偏光子の製造方法等によ り前記目的を達成できることを見出し、 本発明 を完成するに至った。
すなわち本発明は、 少なく ともヨ ウ素染色され、 かつ一軸延伸されたポリ ビニ ルアルコール系フィルムからなる偏光子であって、
前記偏光子の単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度が 9 9. 9 %以上であり、 波長 4 4 0 n mにおける平行透過率 (T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) から下記式 : 二色比 = { 1 o g10 (l/k2)} / { 1 o g10 Cl/kJ}

k 2= 1 / 2 · ^ 2 X C(T p + T c ) 1/2— (T p - T c ) 1/2〕 から算出される二色比が 3 0以上であることを特徴とする偏光子、 に関する。 ヨウ素染色され、 かつ一軸延伸されたポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルム (偏光 子) において、 ヨ ウ素は I 3 と I 5-のポリ ヨ ウ素錯体と して吸着ざれている。 I 3一は約 4 7 0 n mにプロ一ドな吸収ピークを持ち、 I 5_は波長 6 0 0〜 7 0 0 η mにブロー ドな吸収ピークを持つ。 しかし、 従来の偏光子では、 波長 4 0 0 n m ~ 5 0 0 n mの短波長においては、 1 3—の配向が悪い。 すなわち、 波長 4 0 0 n m〜 5 0 0 n mの領域では、 偏光子の二色比が低かった。 そのため、 従来の偏光 子は平行ニコルでの透過スぺク トルでは波長 4 0 0 n m〜5 0 0 n mの透過率が 低く、 黄色く なり、 直交ニコルでの透過スぺク トルでは波長 4 0 0 n m ~ 5 0 0 n mの透過率が高く、 青く なつていた。
前記偏光子の二色比が低いことは I 3一の配向が悪いこ とによるから、 I 3 の配 向を良くすることで二色比を上げて、 偏光子の色相を改善することが可能である
。 特に、 液晶表示装置に用いられる冷陰極管は波長 4 4 0 n m、 5 5 0 n m、 6 1 0 n mに輝線を持っため、 通常、 ヨ ウ素系偏光子における短波長の特性は、 特 に 4 4 0 n mの特性が重要になる。
波長 4 4 0 n mの二色比は 3 0以上とすることで前記色相の問題を解消できる と考えられる。 しかし、 従来、 波長 4 4 0 n mの二色比を 3 0以上にするには、 偏光子の単体透過率を低くする必要があった。 しかし、 単体透過率を低くすると 光学特性上好ましく ない。 単体透過率は、 光学特性上 4 3 %以上であることが望 まれる。 すなわち、 単体透過率が 4 3 %以上では波長 4 4 0 n mの二色比を 3 0 以上にすることができなかった。
上記本発明の偏光子は I 3 の配向が良好であり、 単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏 光度が 9 9 . 9 %以上であり、 かつ波長 4 4 0 n mの二色比 3 0以上を満足する ものである。 かかる本発明の偏光子は良好な光学特性を有し、 しかも平行ニコル 、 直交ニコルのいずれの場合にも、 色相をニュー トラルに改善することができる 。 単体透過率は 4 3 %以上、 さ らには 4 3 . 5 %以上であるのが好ましい。 また 偏光度は 9 9 . 9 %以上、 9 9 . 9 2 %以上であるのが好ましい。 波長 4 4 0 n mの二色比は、 3 0以上、 さ らには 3 4以上であるのが好ましい。 波長 4 4 O n mの二色比は、 1 3-の配向を良くすることが困難であることから、 通常、 3 0以 上のものを得ることは困難である。
前記偏光子は、 ヨ ウ素含有率が 1 . 5〜 2 . 5重量%、 かつカ リ ウム含有率が 0 . 2〜 0 . 6重量%であることが好ましい。
偏光子を高温下においた場合には赤く変色するが、 これは長波長に吸収を持つ I 5—が分解し、 または配向性が低下するためと考えられる。 偏光子は、 ヨ ウ素染 色されたポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムを、 たとえば、 ホウ酸、 ヨ ウ化力 リ ウ ムが含まれる水溶液中で延伸することで製造される。 このとき、 透過率は延伸倍 率、 ヨ ウ素の濃度などで決定されるが、 偏光度はヨ ウ化カ リ ウムの濃度によって 変化する。 すなわち、 偏光子中のヨ ウ化カ リ ウムの量を増やすほど偏光度が上昇 するが、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウムを増やしすぎると偏光子を高温下においた場合には赤く 変色しているものと考えられる。
かかる観点から、 偏光子中のヨウ素含有率は 1 . 5〜 2 . 5重量%が好ましい 。 よ り好ましく は 1 . 7〜 2 . 4重量%、 さ らに好ましく は 2〜 2 . 3重量%で ある。 ヨ ウ素含有量が多すぎると、 偏光板の耐久性が十分でなく、 高温下におい て赤く変色しやすく なり、 ヨ ウ素含有量が少なく なりすぎる と偏光度が低く なり やすい。 また偏光子中のカ リ ウム含有率は 0 . 2〜 0 . 6重量%が好ましい。 よ り好ま しく は 0 . 3 ~ 0 . 5 8重量%、 さ らに好ましく は 0 . 4〜 0 . 5 7重量 %である。 カ リ ウム含有量が多すぎると、 偏光板の耐久性が十分でなく、 高温下 において赤く変色しゃすく なり、 ョ ゥ素含有量が少なく なりすぎると偏光度が低 く なりやすい。
また本発明は、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムをヨ ウ素染色する工程、 ヨ ウ素染色されたポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムを、 濃度 4重量%以上のョ ゥ化カ リ ゥムを含有するホウ酸水溶液中で一軸延伸する工程、
次いで、 濃度 0 . 8重量%以上のヨ ウ化カリ ウム水溶液で洗浄する工程を有す ることを特徴とする偏光子の製造方法、 に関する。
前記偏光子の製造方法において、 一軸延伸する工程のホウ酸水溶液 (延伸浴) におけるョ ゥ化物の濃度は 4 ~ 1 2重量%であることが好ましい。
前記偏光子の製造方法において、 洗浄する工程のヨ ウ化物水溶液 (洗浄浴) に おけるヨ ウ化物の濃度は 0 . 8〜 2 . 5重量 °/0であることが好ましい。 一般に、 偏光子は、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムをヨ ウ素染色、 軸延伸 処理等を行う ことによ り得られる。 ポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムをョ ゥ素染 色した後、 延伸処理やホウ酸水溶液に浸漬する と I 5 が生成し青色に呈色する。 —方、 ヨウ化カ リ ゥム水溶液のようなョ ゥ化物水溶液に浸漬してョ ゥ素イオンを 偏光子に含ませる と、 I 3 が生成し色相はニュー トラルとなる。 I 3 は I 5 よ り も配向が悪いため、 従来の製造方法で得られた偏光子は、 短波長の二色比は低く 、 長波長の二色比は高く なつていた。
上記本発明の偏光子の製造方法は、 従来のよ うにポリ ビュルアルコール系ブイ ルムを延伸処理等によ り配向してからポリ ョ ゥ素錯体を生成するよ り も、 ポリ ヨ ゥ秦錯体を生成してから延伸処理等を行う ことよ りポリ ビュルアルコール系ブイ ルムを配向する方が、 ポリ ヨウ素錯体の配向が良く なることを見出したものであ る。 すなわち、 I 3 の配向を良くするために、 濃度 4重量%以上のヨ ウ化物を含 有するホウ酸水溶液 (延伸浴) 中で I 3 を大量に生成させた後にポリ ビュルアル コール系フィルムを、 延伸することで、 配向の良い I 3 を得ることができ、 波長 4 0 0 n m ~ 5 0 0 n mの短波長での二色比を高くすることができる。 さ らに、 濃度 0 . 8重量%以上のヨ ウ化物水溶液 (洗浄浴) で洗浄することで、 余剰の I 3-を洗浄し、 配向の良い I をフィルムに残すことによ り、 I 3—及ぴ I 5 の量を制 御することができる。 延伸浴、 洗浄浴のヨ ウ化物の濃度が低すぎると I 3 の量が 少なく なりすぎ偏光板の色相が青く なる。 延伸浴のヨ ウ化物の濃度は、 4重量% 以上、 好ましく は 4 . 5重量%以上、 よ り好ま しく は 5重量%以上である。 洗浄 浴のヨ ウ化物の濃度は 0 . 8重量%以上、 好ましく は 1 . 0重量%以上、 よ り好 ましく は 1 . 2重量%以上である。
一方、 延伸浴、 洗浄浴のヨウ化物の濃度は高く してもそれ以上の効果が得られ にく い上に、 偏光子の色相は黄色く なり、 高温雰囲気に長時間保存した際に直交 ニコルの色相が赤く変色してしまう傾向がある。 延伸浴のヨ ウ化物の濃度は、 通 常、 1 5重量%以下の範囲と されるが、 前記観点から、 延伸浴のヨ ウ化物の濃度 は、 1 2重量%以下、 好ましく は 1 1重量。 /0以下、 よ り好ましく は 1 0重量%で ある。 洗浄浴のヨ ウ化物の濃度は、 通常、 6重量%以下の範囲と されるが、 2 . 5重量%、 好ましく は 2 . 3重量%、 よ り好ましく は 2重量%以下である。 前記偏光子の製造方法において、 ヨ ウ化物水溶液で洗浄する工程の後には、 乾 燥工程を設けることができる。 乾燥工程は、 7 0 °C以下であるのが、 耐久性のよ い偏光子を得る点から好ましい。
前記偏光子の製造方法において、 ヨ ウ化物は、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウムが好ましい。 延 伸浴、 洗浄浴に用いるヨ ウ化物と しては、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム、 ヨウ化ナ ト リ ウム、 ヨ ウ化リチウム、 ヨ ウ化亜鉛、 ヨ ウ化カルシウム、 ヨ ウ化コバル トなどの各種ョ ゥ化物を使用することができるが、 これらのなかでもヨ ウ化カリ ウムが、 フィル ム表面に析出しにく い点で好ましい。 なお、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム以外のヨ ウ化物を用 いる場合には、 ヨ ウ化物の分子量、 解離定数、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルム の膨潤度などから、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルム中に含まれるヨ ウ素イオン 濃度がヨ ウ化カ リ ゥムの場合と等しく なるよ うにョ ゥ化物の量を調整することが 好ましい。
前記偏光子の製造方法において、 ヨ ウ素染色工程と ともに、 延伸工程を施すこ とができる。 延伸工程は、 ホウ酸水溶液 (延伸浴) 中の前工程においても行う こ とができるが、 前工程における延伸工程は、 ヨ ウ素染色工程と ともに行うのがフ イルムが水に膨潤してしわになるのを防止できる点から好適である。
前記製造方法で得られる偏光子は、 単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度が 9 9. 9 %以上であり、
波長 4 4 0 n mにおける平行透過率 (T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) から下記式 : 二色比 = { 1 o g 10 ( 1 / k 2)} / { 1 o g 10 ( 1 / k i)}

また本発明は、 前記製造方法によ り得られた偏光子、 に関する。
また本発明は、 前記偏光子の少なく とも片面に、 透明保護フィルムを設けた偏 光板、 に関する。 かかる偏光板は、 前記特性 (単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度 が 9 9 . 9 %以上であり、 かつ波長 4 4 0 n mの二色比が 3 0以上) を有するも のが好ましい。
また本発明は、 前記偏光子または偏光板に、 さ らに他の光学層が少なく と も 1 層積層されていることを特徴とする光学フィルム、 に関する。
さ らに本発明は、 前記偏光子、 偏光板または前記光学フィルムを少なく とも 1 枚用いた画像表示装置、 に関する。 発明を実施するための最良の形態
本発明の偏光子に適用されるポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムの材料には、 ポ リ ビニルアルコールまたはその誘導体が用いられる。 ポリ ビニルアルコールの誘 導体と しては、 ポリ ビニルホルマール、 ポリ ビニルァセタール等があげられる他 、 エチレン、 プロ ピレン等のォレフィ ン、 アク リル酸、 メ タク リル酸、 クロ トン 酸等の不飽和カルボン酸そのアルキルエステル、 アタ リルァミ ド等で ¾性したも のがあげられる。 ポリ ビニルアルコールの重合度は、 1 0 0 0 ~ 1 0 0 0 0程度 、 ケン化度は 8 0〜 1 0 0モル%程度のものが一般に用いられる。
前記ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルム中には可塑剤等の添加剤を含有すること もできる。 可塑剤と しては、 ポリオ一ルおよびその縮合物等があげられ、 たとえ ばグリ セ リ ン、 ジグリ セ リ ン、 ト リ グリ セリ ン、 エチレングリ コール、 プロ ピレ ングリ コール、 ポリエチレングリ コール等があげられる。 可塑剤の使用量は、 特 に制限されないがポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルム中 2 0重量%以下とするのが 好適である。
通常、 未延伸のフィルムである、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムは、 厚さ 3 0〜 1 5 0 μ πι程度のものが用いられる。
前記ポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルム (未延伸フィルム) には、 ヨ ウ素染色す る工程、 ヨ ウ素染色されたポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムを、 濃度 4重量%以 上のヨ ウ化物を含有するホウ酸水溶液 (延伸浴) 中で一軸延伸する工程、 次いで 、 濃度 0 . 8重量%以上のヨ ウ化物水溶液 (洗浄浴) で洗浄する工程が施される ョ ゥ素染色処理はポリ ビニルアルコ ル系フィルムをョ ゥ素溶液に浸漬するこ とによ り一般に行われる。 ヨ ウ素溶液と して、 ヨ ウ素水溶液を用いる場合には、 ョ ゥ素および溶解助剤と して例えばヨ ウ化カ リ ゥム等のヨ ウ化物によ り ヨ ウ素ィ オンを含有させた水溶液などが用いられる。 ヨ ウ素濃度は 0. 0 1〜 0. 5重量 %程度、 さ らには 0. 0 2 ~ 0. 4重量%、 さらには 0. 2〜 0. 3 8重量%、 さ らには 0. 2〜 0. 3 5重量%が好ましく 、 ヨ ウ化物 (たとえばヨ ウ化力リ ウ ム) 濃度は 0. 0 1〜 1 0重量%程度、 さ らには 0. 0 2〜 8重量。 /0で用いるの が好ましい。
ヨ ウ素染色処理にあたり、 ヨ ウ素溶液の温度は、 通常 2 0 ~ 5 0 °C程度、 好ま しくは 2 5〜 40 °Cである。 浸漬時間は通常 1 0〜 3 0 0秒間程度、 好ましくは 2 0 ~ 24 0秒間の範囲である。
なお、 ヨ ウ素染色処理前に、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムを水に浸漬して 水洗してもよい。 ポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムを水洗することでポリ ビュル アルコール系フィルム表面の汚れやプロ ッキング防止剤を洗浄するこ とができる 。 さらに、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムを膨潤させることで染色のムラなど の不均一を防止する効果もある。
次いで、 ヨ ウ素染色されたポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムを、 ヨ ウ化物を含 有するホウ酸水溶液 (延伸浴) 中で一軸延伸する。 延伸浴のヨ ウ化物濃度は前述 の通り 4重量%以上である。 好ましく は、 4〜 1 2重量%、 よ り好ましく は 4. 5〜 1 1重量%、 さ らに好ましく は 5 ~ 1 0重量%である。
また延伸浴のホウ酸濃度は、 通常、 2〜 8重量%、 好ましく は 2. 5〜 7重量 %、 よ り好ましく は 3〜 6重量%である。 ホウ酸濃度が低いと偏光度が悪く なる 傾向があり、 一方、 ホウ酸濃度が高いと延伸されにく く なる。
一軸延伸処理は、 ヨ ウ素染色されたポリ ビニルアルコール系フィルムを、 前記 延伸浴に浸漬して行う。 延伸倍率は、 通常、 延伸倍率は 4〜 7倍程度、 好ましく は 5 ~ 6. 8倍、 さらに好ましく は 5. 5 ~ 6. 5倍とするのが望ましい。 延伸 フィルムの厚さは 5〜 8 0 μ m程度が好適である。
延伸浴中での延伸は多段で行う こともできる。 また、 延伸浴中での延伸前に、 延伸工程を施すこ ともできる。 延伸浴中での延伸前に、 延伸工程を施す場合には 、 延伸浴中での延伸後の延伸倍率が、 未延伸フィルムに対する トータルの倍率が 、 延伸倍率は 4 ~ 7倍程度になるよ うに制御する。 延伸浴中での延伸前の延伸倍 率は、 4倍以下、 2 . 8〜 3 . 8倍とするのが好ましい。 延伸浴中での延伸前の 延伸工程は、 ョ ゥ素染色工程と ともに行うのが好適である。
ホウ酸水溶液 (延伸浴) の^度は、 特に制限されず、 例えば 3 0 °C以上、 好ま しく は 4 0 ~ 8 5 °Cの範囲である。 浸漬時間は、 通常、 1 0〜: 1 2 0 0秒間、 好 ましく は 3 0〜 6 0 0秒間である。
次いで、 ヨ ウ化物水溶液で洗浄する工程を施す。 ヨ ウ化物水溶液 (洗浄浴) の ヨ ウ化物の濃度は、 前述の通り、 濃度 0 . 8重量%以上である。 好ましく は 0 . 8〜 2 . 5重量%、 よ り好ま しく は 0 . 8〜 2 . 3重量%、 さらに好ましく は 0 . 8〜 2 . 1重量。 /0以下である。 ヨ ウ化物水溶液 (洗浄浴) の温度は、 通常 1 5 〜 6 0 °C程度、 好ましく は 2 5〜 4 0 °Cである。 浸漬時間は通常 1 ~ 1 2 0秒程 度、 好ましく は 3 ~ 9 0秒間の範囲である。
次いで乾燥工程を施すことができる。 乾燥工程は 7 0 °C以下、 さ らには 6 0 °C 以下で行うのが好ましく、 4 5 °C以下で行うのがよ り好ましい。 また乾燥時間は 1 0分間以下、 さ らには 5分間以下とするのが好ましい。
得られた偏光子は、 常法に従って、 その少なく とも片面に透明保護フィルムを 設けた偏光板とすることができる。 透明保護フィルムはポリマーによる塗布層と して、 またはフィルムのラミネー ト層等と して設けることができる。 透明保護フ イルムを形成する、 透明ポリマーまたはフィルム材料と しては、 適宜な透明材料 を用いう るが、 透明性や機械的強度、 熱安定性や水分遮断性などに優れるものが 好ましく用いられる。 前記透明保護フィルムを形成する材料と しては、 例えばポ リ エチレンテレフタ レー トゃポリエチレンナフタ レー ト等のポリエステル系ポリ マー、 二酢酸セルロースや三酢酸セルロース等のセノレロース系ポリマー、 ポリ メ チルメタク リ レー ト等のァク リル系ポリマー、 ポリスチレンゃァク リ ロニ ト リル · スチレン共重合体 (A S榭脂) 等のスチレン系ポリマー、 ポリカーボネー ト系 ポリマーなどがあげられる。 また、 ポリ エチレン、 ポリ プロ ピレン、 シクロ系な いしはノルポルネン構造を有するポリオレフイン、 エチレン ' プロ ピレン共重合 体の如きポリオレフイン系ポリマー、 塩化ビエル系ポリマー、 ナイロンや芳香族 ポリ アミ ド等のアミ ド系ポリ マー、 イ ミ ド系ポリマー、 スルホン系ポリマー、 ポ リエーテルスルホン系ポリマー、 ポリエーテルエーテルケ トン系ポリマー、 ポリ フエ二レンスルフィ ド系ポリマー、 ビニルアルコール系ポリマー、 塩化ビニリデ ン系ポリマー、 ビニルプチラール系ポリマー、 ァリ レー ト系ポリマー、 ポリオキ シメチレン系ポリマー、 エポキシ系ポリマー、 あるいは前記ポリマーのブレンド 物なども前記透明保護フィルムを形成するポリマーの例と してあげられる。 透明 保護フィルムは、 アク リル系、 ウレタン系、 アク リルウレタン系、 エポキシ系、 シリ コーン系等の熱硬化型、 紫外線硬化型の樹脂の硬化層と して形成することも できる。
また、 特開 2 0 0 1 — 3 4 3 5 2 9号公報 (WO 0 1 Z 3 7 0 0 7 ) に記載の ポリマーフィルム、 たとえば、 (A) 側鎖に置換および Zまたは非置換イ ミ ド基 を有する熱可塑性樹脂と、 (B ) 側鎖に置換おょぴ または非置換フエニルなら びに二ト リル基を有する熱可塑性樹脂を含有する樹脂組成物があげられる。 具体 例と してはィ ソブチレンと N—メチルマレイ ミ ドからなる交互共重合体とアタ リ ロニ ト リル · スチレン共重合体とを含有する樹脂組成物のフイルムがあげられる 。 フィルムは樹脂組成物の混合押出品などからなるフィルムを用いることができ る。 これらのフィルムは位相差が小さく 、 光弾性係数が小さいため偏光板の歪み によるムラなどの不具合を解消することができ、 また透湿度が小さいため、 加湿 耐久性に優れる。
保護フィルムの厚さは、 適宜に決定しう るが、 一般には強度や取扱性等の作業 性、 薄層性などの点よ り 1〜 5 0 0 μ m程度である。 特に 1〜 3 0 0 mが好ま しく 、 5〜 2 0 0 i mがよ り好ましい。
また、 保護フィルムは、 できるだけ色付きがないことが好ましい。 したがって 、 R t h = [( n x + n y ) / 2 - n z ] · d (ただし、 n x、 n yはフィルム平 面内の主屈折率、 n zはフィルム厚方向の屈折率、 dはフィルム厚みである) で 表されるフィルム厚み方向の位相差値が一 9 0 n m~+ 7 5 n mである保護フィ ルムが好ましく用いられる。 かかる厚み方向の位相差値 (R t h) がー 9 0 n m ~+ 7 5 n mのものを使用することによ り、 保護フィルムに起因する偏光板の着 色 (光学的な着色) をほぼ解消することができる。 厚み方向位相差値 (R t h) は、 さらに好ましく は一 8 0 n m〜十 6 0 n m、 特に一 7 0 η π!〜 + 4 5 n mが 好ましい。
保護フィルムと しては、 偏光特性や耐久性などの点よ り、 ト リァセチルセル口 ース等のセルロース系ポリマーが好ましい。 特に ト リァセチルセルロースブイノレ ムが好適である。 なお、 偏光子の両側に保護フィルムを設ける場合、 その表裏で 同じポリマー材料からなる保護フィルムを用いてもよく、 異なるポリマー材料等 からなる保護フィルムを用いてもよい。
前記透明保護フィルムの偏光子を接着させない面には、 ハー ドコー ト層や反射 防止処理、 ステイ ツキング防止や、 拡散ないしアンチグレアを目的と した処理を 施したものであってもよい。
ハー ドコー ト処理は偏光板表面の傷付き防止などを目的に施されるものであり 、 例えばアク リル系、 シリ コーン系などの適宜な紫外線硬化型樹脂による硬度や 滑り特性等に優れる硬化皮膜を透明保護ブイルムの表面に付加する方式などにて 形成することができる。 反射防止処理は偏光板表面での外光の反射防止を目的に 施されるものであり、 従来に準じた反射防止膜などの形成によ り達成することが できる。 また、 ステイ ツキング防止処理は隣接層との密着防止を目的に施される またアンチグレア処理は偏光板の表面で外光が反射して偏光板透過光の視認を 阻害することの防止等を目的に施されるものであり、 例えばサンドプラス ト方式 やエンボス加工方式による粗面化方式や透明微粒子の配合方式などの適宜な方式 にて透明保護フィルムの表面に微細凹凸構造を付与することによ り形成すること ができる。 前記表面微細凹凸構造の形成に含有させる微粒子と しては、 例えば平 均粒径が 0 . 5〜 5 0 /ί ΐηのシリ カ、 アルミナ、 チタニア、 ジルコユア、 酸化錫 、 酸化インジウム、 酸化カ ドミ ウム、 酸化アンチモン等からなる導電性のことも ある無機系微粒子、 架橋又は未架橋のポリマー等からなる有機系微粒子などの透 明微粒子が用いられる。 表面微細凹凸構造を形成する場合、 微粒子の使用量は、 表面微細凹凸構造を形成する透明樹脂 1 0 0重量部に対して一般的に 2〜 5 0重 量部程度であり、 5〜 2 5重量部が好ましい。 アンチグレア層は、 偏光板透過光 を拡散して視角などを拡大するための拡散層 (視角拡大機能など) を兼ねるもの であってもよい。 なお、 前記反射防止層、 ステイ ツキング防止層、 拡散層やアンチグレア層等は 、 透明保護フィルムそのものに設けることができるほか、 別途光学層と して透明 保護フィルムとは別体のものと して設けること もできる。
前記偏光子と透明保護フィルムとの接着処理には、 接着剤が用いられる。 接着 剤と しては、 イ ソシァネート系接着剤、 ポリ ビュルアルコール系接着剤、 ゼラチ ン系接着剤、 ビニル系ラテックス系、 水系ポリエステル等を例示できる。 前記接 着剤は、 通常、 水溶液からなる接着剤が用いられる。
本発明の偏光板は、 前記透明保護フィルムと偏光子を、 前記接着剤を用いて貼 り合わせることによ り製造する。 接着剤の塗布は、 透明保護フィルム、 偏光子の いずれに行ってもよく 、 両者に行ってもよい。 貼り合わせ後には、 乾燥工程を施 し、 塗布乾燥層からなる接着層を形成する。 偏光子と透明保護フィルムの貼り合 わせは、 ロールラミネーター等によ り行う ことができる。 接着層の厚さは、 特に 制限されないが、 通常 0 . 1 ~ 5 m程度である。
本発明の偏光板は、 実用に際して他の光学層と積層した光学フィルムと して用 いることができる。 その光学層については特に限定はないが、 例えば反射板や半 透過板、 位相差板 ( 1 / 2や 1 / 4等の波長板を含む)、 視角捕償フィルムなど の液晶表示装置等の形成に用いられることのある光学層を 1層または 2層以上用 いることができる。 特に、 本発明の偏光板に更に反射板または半透過反射板が積 層されてなる反射型偏光板または半透過型偏光板、 偏光板に更に位相差板が積層 されてなる楕円偏光板または円偏光板、 偏光板に更に視角補償フィルムが積層さ れてなる広視野角偏光板、 あるいは偏光板に更に輝度向上フィルムが積層されて なる偏光板が好ましい。
反射型偏光板は、 偏光板に反射層を設けたもので、 視認側 (表示側) からの入 射光を反射させて表示するタイプの液晶表示装置などを形成するためのものであ り、 パックライ ト等の光源の内蔵を省略できて液晶表示装置の薄型化を図りやす いなどの利点を有する。 反射型偏光板の形成は、 必要に応じ透明保護フィルム等 を介して偏光板の片面に金属等からなる反射層を付設する方式などの適宜な方式 にて行う ことができる。
反射型偏光板の具体例と しては、 必要に応じマツ ト処理した透明保護フィルム の片面に、 アルミニゥム等の反射性金属からなる箔ゃ蒸着膜を付設して反射層を 形成したものなどがあげられる。 また前記透明保護フィルムに微粒子を含有させ て表面微細凹凸構造と し、 その上に微細凹凸構造の反射層を有するものなどもあ げられる。 前記した微細凹凸構造の反射層は、 入射光を乱反射によ り拡散させて 指向性ゃギラギラした見栄えを防止し、 明暗のムラを抑制しう る利点などを有す る。 また微粒子含有の透明保護フィルムは、 入射光及びその反射光がそれを透過 する際に拡散されて明暗ムラをより抑制しう る利点なども有している。 透明保護 フィルムの表面微細凹凸構造を反映させた微細凹凸構造の反射層の形成は、 例え ば真空蒸着方式、 イオンプレーティング方式、 スパッタ リ ング方式等の蒸着方式 ゃメ ツキ方式などの適宜な方式で金属を透明保護フィルムの表面に直接付設する 方法などによ り行う ことができる。
反射板は前記の偏光板の透明保護ブイルムに直接付与する方式に代えて、 その 透明フィルムに準じた適宜なフィルムに反射層を設けてなる反射シー トなどと し て用いることもできる。 なお反射層は、 通常、 金属からなるので、 その反射面が 透明保護フィルムや偏光板等で被覆された状態の使用形態が、 酸化による反射率 の低下防止、 ひいては初期反射率の長期持続の点や、 保護層の別途付設の回避の 点などよ り好ましい。
なお、 半透過型偏光板は、 上記において反射層で光を反射し、 かつ透過するハ 一フミ ラー等の半透過型の反射層とすることによ り得ることができる。 半透過型 偏光板は、 通常液晶セルの裏側に設けられ、 液晶表示装置などを比較的明るい雰 囲気で使用する場合には、 視認側 (表示側) からの入射光を反射させて画像を表 示し、 比較的暗い雰囲気においては、 半透過型偏光板のパックサイ ドに内蔵され ているパックライ ト等の内蔵光源を使用して画像を表示するタイプの液晶表示装 置などを形成できる。 すなわち、 半透過型偏光板は、 明るい雰囲気下では、 パッ クライ ト等の光源使用のエネルギーを節約でき、 比較的暗い雰囲気下においても 內蔵光源を用いて使用できるタイプの液晶表示装置などの形成に有用である。 偏光板に更に位相差板が積層されてなる楕円偏光板または円偏光板について説 明する。 直線偏光を楕円偏光または円偏光に変えたり、 楕円偏光または円偏光を 直線偏光に変えたり 、 あるいは直線偏光の偏光方向を変える場合に、 位相差板な どが用いられる。 特に、 直線偏光を円偏光に変えたり、 円偏光を直線偏光に変え る位相差板と しては、 いわゆる 1 4波長板 (ぇ 4板とも言う) が用いられる 。 1 2波長板 (え 2板とも言う) は、 通常、 直線偏光の偏光方向を変える場 合に用いられる。
楕円偏光板はスーパーツイス トネマチック ( S T N ) 型液晶表示装置の液晶層 の複屈折によ り生じた着色 (青又は黄) を補償 (防止) して、 前記着色のない白 黒表示する場合などに有効に用いられる。 更に、 三次元の屈折率を制御したもの は、 液晶表示装置の画面を斜め方向から見た際に生じる着色も補償 (防止) する こ とができて好ましい。 円偏光板は、 例えば画像がカラー表示になる反射型液晶 表示装置の画像の色調を整える場合などに有効に用いられ、 また、 反射防止の機 能も有する。 上記した位相差板の具体例と しては、 ポリ カーボネー ト、 ポリ ビニ ルアルコール、 ポリ スチレン、 ポリ メチルメ タク リ レー ト、 ポリ プロ ピレンやそ の他のポリオレフイ ン、 ポリアリ レー ト、 ポリ アミ ドの如き適宜なポリマーから なるフィルムを延伸処理してなる複屈折性フィルムや液晶ポリマーの配向フィル ム、 液晶ポリマーの配向層をフィルムにて支持したものなどがあげられる。 位相 差板は、 例えば各種波長板や液晶層の複屈折による着色や視角等の捕償を目的と したものなどの使用目的に応じた適宜な位相差を有するものであってよく、 2種 以上の位相差板を積層して位相差等の光学特性を制御したものなどであってもよ い
また上記の楕円偏光板や反射型楕円偏光板は、 偏光板又は反射型偏光板と位相 差板を適宜な組み合わせで積層したものである。 かかる楕円偏光板等は、 (反射 型) 偏光板と位相差板の組み合わせとなるよ うにそれらを液晶表示装置の製造過 程で順次別個に積層することによつても形成しう るが、 前記の如く予め楕円偏光 板等の光学フィルムと したものは、 品質の安定性や積層作業性等に優れて液晶表 示装置などの製造効率を向上させう る利点がある。
視角捕償フィルムは、 液晶表示装置の画面を、 画面に垂直でなくやや斜めの方 向から見た場合でも、 画像が比較的鮮明にみえるよ う に視野角を広げるためのフ イルムである。 このよ う な視角捕償位相差板と しては、 例えば位相差フィルム、 液晶ポリマー等の配向フィルムや透明基材上に液晶ポリマー等の配向層を支持し たものなどからなる。 通常の位相差板は、 その面方向に一軸に延伸された複屈折 を有するポリマーフィルムが用いられるのに対し、 視角捕償フィルムと して用い られる位相差板には、 面方向に二軸に延伸された複屈折を有するポリマーフィル ムと力 面方向に一軸に延伸され厚さ方向にも延伸された厚さ方向の屈折率を制 御した複屈折を有するポリマーや傾斜配向フィルムのよ うな二方向延伸フィルム などが用いられる。 傾斜配向フィルムと しては、 例えばポリマーフィルムに熱収 縮フィルムを接着して加熱によるその収縮力の作用下にポリマーフィルムを延伸 処理又は 及ぴ収縮処理したものや、 液晶ポリマーを斜め配向させたものなどが 挙げられる。 位相差板の素材原料ポリマーは、 先の位相差板で説明したポリマー と同様のものが用いられ、 液晶セルによる位相差に基づく視認角の変化による着 色等の防止や良視認の視野角の拡大などを目的と した適宜なものを用いう る。 また良視認の広い視野角を達成する点などよ り、 液晶ポリマーの配向層、 特に ディスコティ ック液晶ポリマーの傾斜配向層からなる光学的異方性層を ト リァセ チルセルロースフィルムにて支持した光学捕償位相差板が好ま しく用いう る。 偏光板と輝度向上フィルムを貼り合わせた偏光板は、 通常液晶セルの裏側サイ ドに設けられて使用される。 輝度向上フィルムは、 液晶表示装置などのパックラ ィ トゃ裏側からの反射などによ り 自然光が入射すると所定偏光軸の直線偏光また は所定方向の円偏光を反射し、 他の光は透過する特性を示すもので、 輝度向上フ イルムを偏光板と積層した偏光板は、 パックライ ト等の光源からの光を入射させ て所定偏光状態の透過光を得る と共に、 前記所定偏光状態以外の光は透過せずに 反射される。 この輝度向上フィルム面で反射した光を更にその後ろ側に設けられ た反射層等を介し反転させて輝度向上フィルムに再入射させ、 その一部又は全部 を所定偏光状態の光と して透過させて輝度向上フィルムを透過する光の増量を図 ると共に、 偏光子に吸収させにくい偏光を供給して液晶表示画像表示等に利用し う る光量の増大を図ることによ り輝度を向上させう るものである。 すなわち、 輝 度向上フィルムを使用せずに、 パックライ トなどで液晶セルの裏側から偏光子を 通して光を入射した場合には、 偏光子の偏光軸に一致していない偏光方向を有す る光は、 ほとんど偏光子に吸収されてしまい、 偏光子を透過してこない。 すなわ ち、 用いた偏光子の特性によっても異なるが、 およそ 5 0 %の光が偏光子に吸収 されてしまい、 その分、 液晶画像表示等に利用しう る光量が減少し、 画像が喑く なる。 輝度向上フィルムは、 偏光子に吸収されるよ うな偏光方向を有する光を偏 光子に入射させずに輝度向上フィルムで一旦反射させ、 更にその後ろ側に設けら れた反射層等を介して反転させて輝度向上フィルムに再入射させることを繰り返 し、 この両者間で反射、 反転している光の偏光方向が偏光子を通過し得るよ うな 偏光方向になった偏光のみを、 輝度向上フィルムは透過させて偏光子に供給する ので、 パックライ トなどの光を効率的に液晶表示装置の画像の表示に使用でき、 画面を明るくすることができる。
輝度向上フィルムと上記反射層等の間に拡散板を設けることもできる。 輝度向 上フィルムによって反射した偏光状態の光は上記反射層等に向かうが、 設置され た拡散板は通過する光を均一に拡散すると同時に偏光状態を解消し、 非偏光状態 となる。 すなわち、 拡散板は偏光を元の自然光状態にもどす。 この非偏光状態、 すなわち自然光状態の光が反射層等に向かい、 反射層等を介して反射し、 再ぴ拡 散板を通過して輝度向上ブイルムに再入射することを繰り返す。 このよ う に輝度 向上フィルムと上記反射層等の間に、 偏光を元の自然光状態にもどす拡散板を設 けることによ り表示画面の明るさを維持しつつ、 同時に表示画面の明るさのむら を少なく し、 均一で明るい画面を提供することができる。 かかる拡散板を設ける ことによ り、 初回の入射光は反射の繰り返し回数が程よく增加し、 拡散板の拡散 機能と相俟って均一の明るい表示画面を提供することができたものと考えられる 。
前記の輝度向上フィルムと しては、 例えば誘電体の多層薄膜や屈折率異方性が 相違する薄膜フィルムの多層積層体の如き、 所定偏光軸の直線偏光を透過して他 の光は反射する特性を示すもの ( 3 M社製、 D— B E F等)、 コレステリ ック液 晶ポリマーの配向フィルムやその配向液晶層をフィルム基材上に支持したものの (日東電工社製、 P C F 3 5 0や M e r c k社製、 T r a n s m a x等) 如き、 左回り又は右回りのいずれか一方の円偏光を反射して他の光は透過する特性を示 すものなどの適宜なものを用いう る。
従って、 前記した所定偏光軸の直線偏光を透過させるタイプの輝度向上フィル ムでは、 その透過光をそのまま偏光板に偏光軸を揃えて入射させることによ り、 偏光板による吸収ロスを抑制しつつ効率よく透過させることができる。 一方、 コ レステリ ック液晶層の如く 円偏光を投下するタイプの輝度向上フィルムでは、 そ のまま偏光子に入射させることもできるが、 吸収ロスを抑制する点よ りその円偏 光を位相差板を介し直線偏光化して偏光板に入射させることが好ましい。 なお、 その位相差板と して 1 4波長板を用いることによ り、 円偏光を直線偏光に変換 することができる。
可視光域等の広い波長範囲で 1 / 4波長板と して機能する位相差板は、 例えば 波長 5 5 O n mの単色光に対して 1 4波長板と して機能する位相差層と他の位 相差特性を示す位相差層、 例えば 1 2波長板と して機能する位相差層とを重畳 する方式などによ り得ることができる。 従って、 偏光板と輝度向上フィルムの間 に配置する位相差板は、 1層又は 2層以上の位相差層からなるものであってよい なお、 コレステリ ック液晶層についても、 反射波長が相違するものの組み合わ せにして 2層又は 3層以上重畳した配置構造とすることによ り、 可視光領域等の 広い波長範囲で円偏光を反射するものを得ることができ、 それに基づいて広い波 長範囲の透過円偏光を得ることができる。
また、 偏光板は、 他の光学層を積層したものからなっていてもよい。 従って、 上記の反射型偏光板や半透過型偏光板と位相差板を組み合わせた反射型楕円偏光 板や半透過型精円偏光板などであってもよい。
偏光板に前記光学層を積層した光学フィルムは、 液晶表示装置等の製造過程で 順次別個に積層する方式にても形成することができるが、 予め積層して光学ブイ ルムと したのものは、 品質の安定性や組立作業等に優れていて液晶表示装置など の製造工程を向上させう る利点がある。 積層には粘着層等の適宜な接着手段を用 いう る。 前記の倔光板やその他の光学フィルムの接着に際し、 それらの光学軸は 目的とする位相差特性などに応じて適宜な配置角度とすることができる。
前述した偏光板や、 偏光板を少なく と も 1層積層されている光学フィルムには 、 液晶セル等の他部材と接着するための粘着層を設けるこ ともできる。 粘着層を 形成する粘着剤は特に制限されないが、 例えばアク リル系重合体、 シリ コーン系 ポリマー、 ポリエステル、 ポリ ウレタン、 ポリ アミ ド、 ポリエーテル、 フッ素系 やゴム系などのポリマーをベースポリマーとするものを適宜に選択して用いるこ とができる。 特に、 アク リル系粘着剤の如く光学的透明性に優れ、 適度な濡れ性 と凝集性と接着性の粘着特性を示して、 耐候性や耐熱性などに優れるものが好ま しく用いう る。
また上記に加えて、 吸湿による発泡現象や剥がれ現象の防止、 熱膨張差等によ る光学特性の低下や液晶セルの反り防止、 ひいては高品質で耐久性に優れる液晶 表示装置の形成性などの点よ り、 吸湿率が低くて耐熱性に優れる粘着層が好まし い
粘着層は、 例えば天然物や合成物の樹脂類、 特に、 粘着性付与樹脂や、 ガラス. 繊維、 ガラスビーズ、 金属粉、 その他の無機粉末等からなる充填剤や顔料、 着色 剤、 酸化防止剤などの粘着層に添加されることの添加剤を含有していてもよい。 また微粒子を含有して光拡散性を示す粘着層などであってもよい。
偏光板や光学ブイルムの片面又は両面への粘着層の付設は、 適宜な方式で行い う る。 その例と しては、 例えばトルエンや酢酸ェチル等の適宜な溶剤の単独物又 は混合物からなる溶媒にペースポリマーまたはその組成物を溶解又は分散させた 1 0〜 4 0重量%程度の粘着剤溶液を調製し、 それを流延方式や塗工方式等の適 宜な展開方式で偏光板上または光学フィルム上に直接付設する方式、 あるいは前 記に準じセパレータ上に粘着層を形成してそれを偏光板上または光学ブイルム上 に移着する方式などがあげられる。
粘着層は、 異なる組成又は種類等のものの重畳層と して偏光板や光学フィルム の片面又は両面に設けることもできる。 また両面に設ける場合に、 偏光板や光学 フィルムの表裏において異なる組成や種類や厚さ等の粘着層とするこ ともできる 。 粘着層の厚さは、 使用目的や接着力などに応じて適宜に決定でき、 一般には 1 〜 5 0 0 mであり、 5 ~ 2 0 0 μ πιが好ましく、 特に 1 0 ~ 1 0 0 i mが好ま しい。
粘着層の露出面に対しては、 実用に供するまでの間、 その汚染防止等を目的に セパレータが仮着されて力パーされる。 これによ り、 通例の取扱状態で粘着層に 接触するこ とを防止できる。 セパレータと しては、 上記厚さ条件を除き、 例えば プラスチックフィルム、 ゴムシー ト、 紙、 布、 不織布、 ネッ ト、 発泡シー トゃ金 属箔、 それらのラミネー ト体等の適宜な薄葉体を、 必要に応じシリ コーン系や長 鎖アルキル系、 フッ素系や硫化モリブデン等の適宜な剥離剤でコー ト処理したも のなどの、 従来に準じた適宜なものを用いう る。
なお本発明において、 上記した偏光板を形成する偏光子や透明保護フィルムゃ 光学フィルム等、 また粘着層などの各層には、 例えばサリチル酸エステル系化合 物やべンゾフエノール系化合物、 ベンゾ ト リアゾール系化合物ゃシァノアク リ レ 一ト系化合物、 二ッケル錯塩系化合物等の紫外線吸収剤で処理する方式などの方 式によ り紫外線吸収能をもたせたものなどであってもよい。
本発明の偏光板または光学フィルムは液晶表示装置等の各種装置の形成などに 好ましく用いることができる。 液晶表示装置の形成は、 従来に準じて行いう る。 すなわち液晶表示装置は一般に、 液晶セルと偏光板または光学フィルム、 及ぴ必 要に応じての照明システム等の構成部品を適宜に組立てて駆動回路を組込むこと などによ り形成されるが、 本発明においては本発明による偏光板または光学ブイ ルムを用いる点を除いて特に限定はなく、 従来に準じう る。 液晶セルについても 、 例えば T N型や S T N型、 π型などの任意なタイプのものを用いう る。
液晶セルの片側又は両側に偏光板または光学ブイルムを配置した液晶表示装置 や、 照明システムにパックライ トあるいは反射板を用いたものなどの適宜な液晶 表示装置を形成するこ とができる。 その場合、 本発明による偏光板または光学フ イルムは液晶セルの片側又は両側に設置することができる。 両側に偏光板または 光学フィルムを設ける場合、 それらは同じものであってもよいし、 異なるもので あってもよい。 さらに、 液晶表示装置の形成に際しては、 例えば拡散板、 アンチ グレア層、 反射防止膜、 保護板、 プリ ズムアレイ、 レンズアレイシー ト、 光拡散 板、 パックライ トなどの適宜な部品を適宜な位置に 1層又は 2層以上配置するこ とができる。
次いで有機エレク ト ロルミネセンス装置 (有機 E L表示装置) について説明す る。 一般に、 有機 E L表示装置は、 透明基板上に透明電極と有機発光層と金属電 極とを順に積層して発光体 (有機エレク ト ロルミネセンス発光体) を形成してい る。 ここで、 有機発光層は、 種々の有機薄膜の積層体であり、 例えばト リ フエ二 ルアミ ン誘導体等からなる正孔注入層と、 アン トラセン等の蛍光性の有機固体か らなる発光層との積層体や、 あるいはこのよ うな発光層とペリ レン誘導体等から なる電子注入層の積層体や、 またあるいはこれらの正孔注入層、 発光層、 および 電子注入層の積層体等、 種々の組み合わせをもった構成が知られている。
有機 E L表示装置は、 透明電極と金属電極とに電圧を印加することによって、 有機発光層に正孔と電子とが注入され、 これら正孔と電子との再結合によって生 じるエネルギーが蛍光物資を励起し、 励起された蛍光物質が基底状態に戻るとき に光を放射する、 という原理で発光する。 途中の再結合というメカニズムは、 一 般のダイオー ドと同様であり、 このことからも予想できるよ う に、 電流と発光強 度は印加電圧に対して整流性を伴う強い非線形性を示す。
有機 E L表示装置においては、 有機発光層での発光を取り 出すために、 少なく とも一方の電極が透明でなくてはならず、 通常酸化ィンジゥムスズ ( I T O ) な どの透明導電体で形成した透明電極を陽極と して用いている。 一方、 電子注入を 容易にして発光効率を上げるには、 陰極に仕事関数の小さな物質を用いることが 重要で、 通常 M g — A g、 A l — L i などの金属電極を用いている。
このよ うな構成の有機 E L表示装置において、 有機発光層は、 厚さ 1 0 n m程 度ときわめて薄い膜で形成されている。 このため、 有機発光層も透明電極と同様 、 光をほぼ完全に透過する。 その結果、 非発光時に透明基板の表面から入射し、 透明電極と有機発光層とを透過して金属電極で反射した光が、 再び透明基板の表 面側へと出るため、 外部から視認したとき、 有機 E L表示装置の表示面が鏡面の よ うに見える。
電圧の印加によって発光する有機発光層の表面側に透明電極を備える と ともに 、 有機発光層の裏面側に金属電極を備えてなる有機エレク トロルミネセンス発光 体を含む有機 E L表示装置において、 透明電極の表面側に偏光板を設けると とも に、 これら透明電極と偏光板との間に位相差板を設けることができる。
位相差板および偏光板は、 外部から入射して金属電極で反射してきた光を偏光 する作用を有するため、 そ.の偏光作用によって金属電極の鏡面を外部から視認さ せないという効果がある。 特に、 位相差板を 1 / 4波長板で構成し、 かつ偏光板 と位相差板との偏光方向のなす角を π Ζ 4に調整すれば、 金属電極の鏡面を完全 に遮蔽するこ とができる。 すなわち、 この有機 E L表示装置に入射する外部光は、 偏光板によ り直線偏光 成分のみが透過する。 この直線偏光は位相差板によ り一般に楕円偏光となるが、 と く に位相差板が 1 / 4波長板でしかも偏光板と位相差板との偏光方向のなす角 が π , 4のときには円偏光となる。
この円偏光は、 透明基板、 透明電極、 有機薄膜を透過し、 金属電極で反射して 、 再び有機薄膜、 透明電極、 透明基板を透過して、 位相差板に再び直線偏光とな る。 そして、 この直線偏光は、 偏光板の偏光方向と直交しているので、 偏光板を 透過できない。 その結果、 金属電極の鏡面を完全に遮蔽することができる。 実施例
以下に本発明を実施例および比較例をあげて具体的に説明する。 なお、 各例中 の%は重量%である。 延伸浴、 洗浄浴における各濃度は、 溶液全体に対する、 各 溶質の濃度である。
実施例 1
厚さ 8 0 mのポリ ビニルアルコールフィルム (平均重合度 2 4 0 0、 ケン化 度 9 9 . 9 % ) を、 速度比の異なるロール間で、 3 0 ° ( 、 ヨ ウ素濃度 0 . 3 %、 ヨ ウ化カリ ゥム濃度 2 %のヨ ウ素水溶液中に 6 0秒間浸漬して、 染色しながら 3 倍に一軸延伸した。 次いで 6 0 °C、 ホウ酸の濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウムの濃度 5 %の水溶液 (延伸浴) 中に 4 0秒間浸漬しながら、 トータルで 6倍まで延伸した 。 次いで、 3 0 、 濃度 1 . 5 %のヨ ウ化カリ ウム水溶液 (洗浄浴) 中に 1 0秒 間浸漬することで洗浄した。 その後、 5 0 °Cで 4分間乾燥して偏光子を得た。 得 られた偏光子の両側に、 表面をケン化処理した厚さ 8 0 μ ηιの ト リ アセチルセル ロースフィルムをポリ ビュルアルコール系接着剤で貼り あわせた後、 6 0 °Cで 4 分間乾燥させて偏光板を得た。
実施例 2
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホウ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウム濃度 1 0 %の水溶液を用いたこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光板を得た。
実施例 3 実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホウ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウム濃度 1 0 %の水溶液を用いたこ と、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 2 %の水溶液を用 いたこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして 偏光板を得た。
実施例 4
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホウ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 7 % の水溶液を用いたこと、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 1 %の水溶液を用い たこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏 光板を得た。
実施例 5
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホウ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 5 % の水溶液を用いたこと、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 1 %の水溶液を用い たこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏 光板を得た。
実施例 6
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホゥ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウム濃度 1 5 %の水溶液を用いたこ と以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光板を得た。
実施例 7
実施例 1 において、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 3 %の水溶液を用いた こと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光 板を得た。
実施例 8
実施例 1 において、 ヨウ素水溶液と して、 ヨ ウ素濃度 0 . 4 %、 ヨ ウ化力 リ ウ ム濃度 3 %のヨ ウ素水溶液 (単体透過率が 4 2 . 5 %となるよ う) を用いたこと 以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光板を 得た。
実施例 9
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホウ酸濃度 4 %、 ョ ゥ化カリ ゥム濃度 2 % の水溶液を用いたこと、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨウ化カリ ウム濃度 5 %の水溶液を用い たこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏 光板を得た。
実施例 1 0
実施例 1 において、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 2 %の水溶液を用いた こと、 その後、 3 0 °Cで 5分間乾燥したこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子 を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光板を得た。
比較例 1
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホゥ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨウ化カリ ゥム濃度 3 % の水溶液を用いたこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光板を得た。
比較例 2
実施例 1 において、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 0 . 5 %の水溶液を用 いたこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして 偏光板を得た。 '
比較例 3
実施例 1 において、 洗浄浴と して、 純水を用いたこと以外は実施例 1 と同様に して偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏光板を得た。
比較例 4
実施例 1 において、 延伸浴と して、 ホウ酸濃度 4 %、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウム濃度 3 % の水溶液を用いたこと、 洗浄浴と して、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウム濃度 3 %の水溶液を用い たこと以外は実施例 1 と同様にして偏光子を得た。 また実施例 1 と同様にして偏 光板を得た。
実施例およぴ比較例で作成した偏光板について下記の評価を行った。 結果を表 1 に示す。
(単体透過率)
分光光度計 ((株) 村上色彩技術研究所製, D o t _ 3 C ) を用いて、 1枚の 偏光板の透過率を測定した。 なお、 偏光板の単体透過率は J I S Z 8 7 0 1 の 2度視野 (C光源) によ り視感度補整した Y値である。 (偏光度)
2枚の同じ偏光板を偏光軸が平行になるよ う に重ね合わせた場合の平行透過率 (T p ) と、 直交になるよ うに重ね合わせた場合の直交透過率 (T c ) を、 上記 分光光度計を用いて測定し、 以下の式から偏光度を求めた。
偏光度 (%) = {(T p -T c ) / (T p + T c )} X 1 0 0
なお、 平行透過率 (T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) は 2度視野 (C光源) によ り 視感度補整した Y値である。
(波長 4 4 0 n mの 2色比)
偏光板の波長 4 4 0 n mにおける平行透過率 ( T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) か ら下記式 : 二色比 = { 1 o g 10 ( 1 / k2)} / { 1 o g 10 ( 1 /k j}
但し、 1^= 1 2 · 7" 2 X 〔(T p + T c ) 1/2+ (T p - T c ) 1/2]
k 2= 1 / 2 - 2 X C(T p + T c ) 1/2- (T p - T c ) 1/2〕 によ り二色比を算出した。
(偏光子中のヨ ウ素、 カリ ウム含有量)
蛍光 X線測定装置 (株式会社リガク製, Z S X— l O O e ) を用いて測定した 。 得られた蛍光 X線の強度からファンダメ ンタルパラメータ法 (F P法) を用い て偏光子中のヨ ウ素含有率 (%)、 カ リ ウム含有率 (%) を求めた。
(色相 : Δ a b )
分光光度計 ((株) 村上色彩技術研究所製, D o t — 3 C) を用いて、 ハンタ 一表色系における a値、 b値を求めた (C光源)。 これらから、 下式によ り 厶 a b を求めた。
Δ a b ((平行 a値一直交 a値) 2+ (平行 b値一直交 b値) 2)
厶 a bは明度変化に応じた色度変化を表す。 この値が少ないほど色の再現性が良 い。 本発明では Δ a bは 5以下であることが好ましい。
(耐久性 : 加熱時の赤変の評価)
偏光板を 8 5 °Cの雰囲気で 2 4時間保存した後に、 直交ニコルの色相を目視に て下記基準で評価した。 ◎ : 赤変なし。 〇 : わずかに赤変。 △ : 赤変。 X : 著し く赤変。 ヨウ化カリウム

表 1から、 単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度が 9 9. 9 %以上であり、 4 4 0 n mの 2色比が 3 0以上の偏光子、 偏光板は、 色相が良好であることが分かる。 また、 さ らに実施例 1 ~ 5、 8 と実施例 6、 7、 9 との比較から、 ヨ ウ素含有率 力 1 . 5〜 2. 5重量%、 かつカ リ ウム含有率が 0. 2〜 0. 6重量%に制御し たものは加熱時の赤変を抑制でき、 耐久性にも優れていることが分かる。
また濃度 4重量%以上のヨ ウ化カリ ゥムを含有するホゥ酸水溶液中で一軸延伸 した後に、 濃度 0. 8重量%以上のヨ ウ化カリ ゥム水溶液で洗浄することで、 上 記偏光子を得ることができる。 ホウ酸水溶液中のヨ ウ化カ リ ゥム濃度を 4〜 1 2 重量%、 ヨ ウ化カリ ウム水溶液の濃度を 0. 8 ~ 2. 5重量%の範囲のものは耐 久性に優れる。 産業上の利用可能性
本発明の偏光子、 本発明の製造方法により得られた偏光子は、 偏光板、 さらに は偏光板等を用いた光学フィルムに好適に用いることができ、 これらは液晶表示 装置、 有機 E L表示装置、 P D P等の画像表示装置に適用できる。

Claims

請求の範囲
1. 少なく ともヨ ウ素染色され、 かつ一軸延伸されたポリ ビニルアルコール系 フィルムからなる偏光子であって、
前記偏光子の単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度が 9 9. 9 %以上であり、 波長 4 4 0 n mにおける平行透過率 (T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) から下記式 : 二色比 = { 1 o g 10 ( 1 / k 2)} / { 1 o g 10 ( 1 / k
但し、 1^= 1 2 · 2 Χ 〔(T p + T c ) 1/2+ (T p - T c ) 1/2]
k 2= 1 / 2 ' 2 X 〔(T p + T c ) 1/2 - ( T p— T c ) 1/2〕 で算出される二色比が 3 0以上であることを特徴とする偏光子。
2. ヨ ウ素含有率が 1 . 5 ~ 2. 5重量0 /0、 かつカリ ウム含有率が 0. 2〜 0 - 6重量%であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 1項に記載の偏光子。
3. ポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムをヨ ウ素染色する工程、
ヨ ウ素染色されたポリ ビュルアルコール系フィルムを、 濃度 4重量0 /0以上のョ ゥ化物を含有するホゥ酸水溶液中で一軸延伸する工程、
次いで、 濃度 0. 8重量%以上のヨ ウ化物水溶液で洗浄する工程を有すること を特徴とする偏光子の製造方法。
4. 一軸延伸する工程のホウ酸水溶液におけるヨ ウ化物の濃度が 4〜 1 2重量 %であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項に記載の偏光子の製造方法。
5. 洗浄する工程のヨ ウ化物水溶液におけるヨ ウ化物の濃度が 0. 8 ~ 2. 5 重量。/。であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項または第 4項に記載の偏光子の 製造方法。
6. ヨ ウ化物水溶液で洗浄する工程の後に、 7 0 °C以下で乾燥する工程を有す ることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項〜第 5項のいずれかに記載の偏光子の製造 方法。
7. ヨ ウ化物が、 ヨ ウ化カ リ ウムであることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項〜 第 6項のいずれかに記載の偏光子の製造方法。
8. ヨ ウ素染色工程と ともに、 延伸工程を施すことを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項〜第 7項のいずれかに記載の偏光子の製造方法。
9. 得られる偏光子は、 単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度が 9 9. 9 %以上で あり、
波長 44 0 n mにおける平行透過率 ( T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) から下記式 : 二色比 = { 1 o g 10 ( 1 / k2)} / { 1 o g 10 ( 1 k^}
但し、 ]^= 1 / 2 · ^ 2 Χ C(T ρ + T c ) 1/2 + (Τ ρ - Τ c ) 1/2
k 2= 1 / 2 · ^ 2 X C(T ρ + Τ c ) 1/2— (Τ ρ - Τ c ) 1/2〕 で算出される二色比が 3 0以上であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項〜第 8 項のいずれかに記載の偏光子の製造方法。
1 0. 得られる偏光子は、 ヨ ウ素含有率が 1. 5 ~ 2. 5重量。 /0、 かつ力リ ウ ム含有率が 0. 2 ~ 0. 6重量%であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項〜第
9項のいずれかに記載の偏光子の製造方法。
1 1. 請求の範囲第 3項〜第 1 0項のいずれかに記載の製造方法によ り得られ た偏光子。
1 2. 請求の範囲第 1項、 第 2項または請求の範囲第 1 1項に記載の偏光子の 少なく とも片面に、 透明保護フィルムを設けた偏光板。
1 3. 単体透過率が 4 3 %以上、 偏光度が 9 9. 9 %以上であり、
波長 44 0 n mにおける平行透過率 ( T p ) と直交透過率 (T c ) から下記式 : 二色比 = { 1 o g 10 ( 1./ k 2) } / { 1 o g 10 ( 1 /k }
但し、 ki- l Z S · ^ 2 X 〔(T p + T c ) 1/2+ (T p - T c ) 1/2]
k2= l / 2 - 2 X [(T p +T c ) 1/2- (T p - T c ) 1/2〕 から算出される二色比が 3 0以上であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 1 2項に 記載の偏光板。
1 4. 請求の範囲第 1項、 第 2項もしく は請求の範囲第 1 1項に記載の偏光子 、 または請求の範囲第 1 2項もしくは第 1 3項に記載の偏光板に、 さらに他の光 学層が少なく とも 1層積層されていることを特徴とする光学フィルム。
1 5. 請求の範囲第 1項、 第 2項もしく は請求の範囲第 1 1項に記載の偏光子 、 請求の範囲第 1 2項もしく は第 1 3項に記載の偏光板、 または請求の範囲第 1 4項に記載の光学フィルムを少なく とも 1枚用いた画像表示装置。
