UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVIN RINGOLD, OF CINCINNATI, OIIIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL CASH REGISTER COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
DESIGN FOR A CASH-REGISTER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 29,346, dated September 13, 1898. Application iiled lune 30,1898. Serial No. 684,881. Term of' patent 14 years.
To (LU whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWIN RINGOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of' Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Cash-Register Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
My design relates to designs for the cabinets of cash-registers.
In the appended drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view faken from one corner of a cabinet constructed in accordance with my new design. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view taken from the back of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view taken from one side of said cabinet; and Fig. 4 represents a view similar to Fig. 3, but taken from the opposite side with the lower portion of the side hood removed.
In order to facilitate the description of the cabinet, I will divide said description into three sections-first, that of the main casing 1; second, that of the base-casi ng 2, and, lastly, that of the side casing 3.
The sides of the base-casing 2 as well as the front of the drawer are designed to give a panel effect, each panel comprising a background or field of a rough, dead,or Roman finish and a surrounding raised polished border. Bas-relief ornaments are arranged on said drawer-panel, at each end of the same, and comprise, respectively, a bas-relief circular centerpiece 5, inclosing a cluster of leaves, and a fanciful leaf 6 to each side of said centerpiece. The top 7 of the base-casing 2 projects slightly beyond the sides and back of said casing and is finished smooth about its edge, while the lower edge of the said basecasing is provided with an ornamental beading 8 and the back with three bas-relief ornaments 9, similar to those on the front of the base. Each side of the base-casing is further provided with a middle bas-relief ornament 10, similar to the design 9, with the exception that the side sprays are omitted, and bas-relief designs to each side of said middle ornament and each comprising a base of scrolls and a leaf l2. Along the top, to each side ofthe main casing 1, which rests upon said top, is a bas-relief design comprising a central portion 13a, and to each side of the same leaves 11, similar to the leaves l2. At each of the rear corners of the said basecasing top is a circular bas-relief ornament 14, containing a design similar to that in the circle on the drawer-front. The ornaments 15 of the front corners of the top are substantially the same as the ornaments of the rear corners, with the exception of three radiating sprays of petals 16, with which they are provided. The design 17 for the front portion of the top consists of a circular center similar to those in the corners, scrolls, and leaves.
The general shape of the main casing l is rectangular at the bottom, with vertical sides and a front that iirst rises vertical, then arches inward, and then terminates in another vertical rise and a back that first rises perpendicular until near its top, where it curves inward slightly and then continues upward ver tically. The said back is bounded with a smooth strip and has its field, which is of the aforesaid Roman eect, divided vertically by a number of strips 19,so as to secure the desired panel effect, said panels terminating some distance below the top of the back. Each of these panels is provided near its lower end with a bas-relief leaf-spray ornament 22 and above each of said ornaments with a bas-relief ornament 23, which consists of a circular center, a leaf below said circle, and a small leaf spray above said circle. The top of each of the panels is`formed with a bas-relief pendant 24, while just above each of the four end sections is a bas-relief spray of petals 25. The designs of the sides of the casing 1 are substantially the same as the back, with the exception that the upper por tions of two of the panels are omitted. The top 26 of the casing 1 is rectangular in outline and is formed about its outer edge with a fancy molding 27 and bounded by a smooth 95 strip, which forms the usual panel. The lower vertical portion of the front has the abovedescribed panel effect and is formed with a relief design 20, comprising an approximately rectangular central figure, side circles and scrolls, and elongated leaves beyond said circles. At cach end of the said vertical portion is arranged a bracket 30, containing scroll ornaments in bas-relief. The arching portion of the front is divided into a number of panels, each of which, excepting the two end ones, is provided with a bas-relief ornament 31, comprising a circular center, and elongated leaves extend from the same. The two end sections of the curved portion of the front are formed, respectively, with bas-relief ornaments 32, each of which comprises a circular center, tapering stems extending from said center, and sprays of leaves beyond each stem. An elongated bas-relief ornament 33, comprising a middle leaf cluster and elongated leaves, is arranged at the top of said curved top portion and extends the width of the three middle panels.
Panels 34 are formed at each side of the upper front portion, and each contains an ornament 35, comprising a leaf-cluster base and a vertical elongated leaf above the same. The tablet 36, placed upon the top of the casing, is supported by basrelief scroll-brackets 37, and is also itself of a scroll design, having a curved lower edge terminating in scroll ends, the upper edge of the tablet curving upward at the middle and formed with a double scroll, capped by a petal cluster. The said tablet is bounded by a smooth polished border and is similar on both sides, having the usual dull background before described.
Having now fully described the base and main casings, I will pass on to the descript-ion of the side casing or hood 3. In general outline this hood is rectangular at the bottom, rises vertically at the back, then arches at the top, again arches forward and downward on a lower plane, and finally descends vertically in front, the crotch between the two arching portions of the hood being provided with a small curved hood 38. The outer vertical wall of the hood 3 is divided into two sections, the upper of which is solid, while the lower is of filigree conformation, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower edge of the up per section is bounded by one-half of an elongated leaf 39 of approximately cyma conformation and of gradually-decreasing size and is provided with elongated drooping leaves 40, which spring from its stem and diverge to the side of the same. An auxiliary stem 4l springs from the base of said leaf-stem and, describing a cyma, curls upward under a circular convex portion 42, which is just below and concentric with the arch of the hood. Auxiliary scrolls are arranged along the length of said leaf-stem and extend in basrelief over the dull-finished background of the section. The convex portion 42 contains an ornament similar to those employed in the circles on the front of the drawer, while radiating from said circle are ornamental leaf clusters 43. A small cup-shaped ornamental cap 44 is arranged slightly below and to one side of the aforesaid convex portion.
The above description relates to the designs on the solid section of the hood, and I will now describe the lower or filigree section. A partial leaf 45 bounds the upper edge of this lower section and completes the partial leaf on the lower edge of the upper section. The remainder of the lower section is filled in with interlocking scrolls and ornamental clusters of leaves of filigree formation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a cash-register cabinet herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN RINGOLD.
