Description
DESIGN.
J. L. FOLSOM.
CARPET.
Patented Apr. 8, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. FOLSOM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE HARTFORD CARPET COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,230, dated April 3, 1888.
Serial No. 262,052.
Term of patent 3!; years.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. FoLsoM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and original 5 Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, which forms a part of the same.
The invention relates to a design to be worked into or upon surfaces, such as carpets or similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel configuration and grouping of figures herein specifically shown and claimed.
The accon'ipauyingphotograph isa face view ofa carpet showing my new design.
My design consists of the irrcgularly-shuped figures A, B, C, D, E, F, and G disposed over the surface of the carpet, substantially as shown.
Figure A has a checkered or lattice work formed by two series of intersecting lines. At the corners and in the center of the blocks thus formed are small geometrical figures. At one side of the figure is an irregular mass of solid block-work. On all sides of the figure needlelike points or shafts project, making an irregular outline.
Figure B is divided into hexagonal blocks by a series of lines. These hexagonal blocks contain small geometrical ornaments. There are several masses of solid block-work connected with the figure. On all sides of the figure needle-like points orshafts project, making an irregular outline.
Figure C is divided by a series of lines into alternate squares and cross forms, each of which has a geometrical ornament at its center. Connected with the figure are irregular masses of solid block-work. On all sides there 0 are projecting needle-like shafts or points.
Figure D consists of a group of octagohal forms with square blocks or spaces at their corners. The octagonal forms are ornamented with geometrical figures. Connected withthis group are several masses of solid block-work. Needlelike shafts or points project on all sides.
Figure E consists of a group of manysided blocks ornamented with cross forms or compound geometrical forms. Outside of this group are several masses of solid block-work. Needle points or shafts project on all sides of the figure.
Figure F consists of a group of octagonal blocks ornamented with open geometrical figures. Several masses of solid block-work are disposed around the outside of the figure. Needle-like shafts or points project from the sides of the figure.
Figure G consists of a mass of open block- 5 work with ornamental figures in many of the blocks and of small irregular masses of solid bloclcwork. Needle shafts or points project from the sides of the figure.
With each of these figures is connected one 6 or more irregular stems projecting into the spaces between the figures and bearing one or two conventionalized leaf forms. Connected Willi these stems, and sometimes occurring separately, are small skeleton figures like thistle 7o blows.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The design for carpets, consisting of the figure E, substantially as shown.
2. The design for carpets, consisting of the figure F, substantially as shown.
3. The design for carpets, consisting of the various figures arranged substantially as shown.
