HEATING STOVE.
No. 17,740. Patented Sept. 27, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO GERMER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BLACK & GERMER,
, OF SAME PLACE.
l DESIGN FOR A HEATING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,740, dated September 27. 1887.
Application filed August 22, 1887. Serial No. 247,616. Term of patent 3i years.-
To alZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO GERMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for Heating-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My design relates particularly to the form and ornamentation of heating-stoves; and it consists in the features hereinafter set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying photograph, showing a perspective view of a heating-stove embodying the same.
In its general shape the stove is rectangular, with the open front thereof surmounted with an arched and outwardly-projecting hood, above which is an ornamental panel, the whole being surmounted by the overhanging molding of the top of the stove.
The base of the stove, A, is in its general shape rectangular, the top thereof, B, being substantially flat, forming a hearth for the stove. Each of the front corners of this hearth is an ornamental panel, D, of scroll-work, and across the front of the hearth, between the panels D D, are ornamental tiles or panels E. The outer edge of the hearth B is finished with a plain ogee-band, F, below which is a serrated band, G. Belowthe band G, I secure to the base A a curtain, H, ornamented with shell-work H, which curtain H joins with the legs I of the'stove, the band of shell-work H being continued on the upperportion of the legs I, so astoform a cifitinuous band around the base of the stove.
Above the top of the base A is an ornamental rod, J, which extends outward from each corner of the upright portion of the stove and around the ends and front of the hearth B. This rod J is ornamented with scrollwork at its ends, corners and across the front thereof.
The ends K of the upright portion of the stove are ornamented with rectangular panels L L, the styles K of which are ornamented with els, N, the lower portion of the front panels thereof being ornamented with a single column of spiral molding, O, the styles of the panels being plain ogee moldings P. The upper portions of the fronts of the corner-posts M are ornamented with foliated panels Q, surmounted by human busts R.
Between the corner-posts M on the front of the stove, above the hearth B, is a movable paneled plate, S, adapted to close up the space between the hearth B and the lower part of the grate T, the panel in the plate S being occupiedby words in ornamental letters, the same substantially occupying the whole of the panel S in the plate S.
The upper portion of the front of the stove between the foliate panels Q consists of an outwardly-projecting arched hood, a, the lower edge, b, thereof being rounded, above which the top of the hood a is ornamented with small panel-work c. and opposite the top of the panels Q, a bandmolding, d, extends across the front of the stove, and the panel a, formed by the arched hood a and the styles of the foliate panels Q and the band-molding d, I ornament with griflin-heads d near the ends thereof, in hasrelief and foliate work meeting in scrolls over the central part of the arched hood a. Above the molding d a panel, f, is formed by the band-mold d, the busts R, and the fascia e, go
which panel is provided with a central ornamental face, g, in basreIief, from which face foliate work extends each way and surrounds medallions i in the panel f, these medallions i being either'of tile inserted in spaces the panel for that purpose or made a part thereof, if desired. The fascia e of the top of the stove is ornamented with foliate work j. The general contour of the top I of the stove is pyramidal, the sides and ends curving roo gradually to the apex thereof, which is surmounted by an ornamental vase 0r figure, m,
also by 5 Above the arch of the hood a 80 left in the ornamentation of the top 1 consisting of, first, a plain band-cornice, a, overhanging the fascia 0; second, of a band of sheIIwork-ornamented molding, o, curving inward and upward; third, of aplain molded band,p; fourth, of a serrated band,1-; fifth, of a plain band, 8; sixth, of a'serrated band, It, and, seventh, of panels a, ornamented with raised scroll-work, which panels extend to the apex of the top Z, thus completing the top of the stove to the base of the ornamental figure m, hereinbefore referred to.
Having thus fully described my design, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a design for an open-front heating stove, the base A, consisting of the ornamental hearth B, having central front panels, E, ornamented with tiles, and corner panels, D, or namented with scroll-work, substantially as shown and described, and the curtain H, having shell ornaments H thereon, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a design for the ends of an open-front heating-stove, the styles K and the sunken panels L, having central and corner ornamentation, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a design for an open-front heatingstove, the corner-posts M, ornamented with spiral molding and foliate panels, with the projecting arched hood (1, with a rounded edge and ornamented with panel-work, the panel a, ornamented with griflins and foliate work, the baud-mold d, and the panel f, ornamented with medallions and foliate work, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a design for an open-front heating stove, the top Z, ornamented with plain shellwork and serrated band-molds and ornamental panels, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a design for an open-front heatingstove, the base A, ornamented substantially as shown and described, with the ends of the upright portion thereof having panels L therein, ornamented substantially as shown and described, the front posts, M, ornamented substantially as shown and described, and the arched hood a and the panels a and f, ornamented substantially as shown and described, and the top I, ornamented substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presen ee of two witnesses.
OTTO GERMER.
