- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AECHIBALD MCOALLUM, OF HALIFAX, ENGLAND, ASsreNoH To THE BIGELOW CARPET COMPANY, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,358, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed May 21, 1881. Term of patent 3} years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD MCGALLUM, of Halifax, England, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics 5 and it consists in the novel grouping and configuration of figures hereinafter more fully described.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.
The group A is composed of. a figure, B, somewhat resembling a pine-apple, growing upon a vine, from which vine also projects the leaf-like figure a, with smaller leaf-like figures projecting therefrom. From the same vine projects the figure C, composed of a leaf dividing into three parts, with buds b and d growing from the end of one division. The figures e and f somewhat resemble oak -leaves and grow on thesame vine, as does also the figure g, resembling a half-open bud, and the figure G, resembling a flower with its petals turned very far backward. The leaf-like figure E grows farther along this vine-stem, from which also projects the open flower-like figure D. From the end of the vine projects the figure H, resembling a cluster of grapes protruding from surrounding leaves. From this figure H projects on one side the figure ha branch bearing fruit resembling oranges. On the other side projects the figure ia branch bearing leaves and buds.
The above-described figures form the group or vine A, and the repetition of this group A at regular intervals over the background forms the design.
The background is composed of the group,
I, consisting of a series of bars with crosses at each end, set at right angles to each other and forming a regular pattern; also, of the group K, consisting of a series of squares, each containing a figure like a Maltese cross in its center and four small squares at the four corners.
A portion of the background is plain.
I claim- 1. The design for the background of carpets,
consisting of the group, I, of crossed bars, sub-.
4. The design for carpets, consisting of the group A, containing figures B a C b d e f g D E G H h z, the background I, and background K, substantially as shown.
ARCHIBALD MCCALLUM.
