CHARLES W. T. DAVIES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT.
Patented Jan. 25, 19-14 the skirt thereof; either in shirts of the ordi-- j nary type or in those of the coat type, 3
so that the bosom may be held smoothly but comfortably in place by attachment. to a l l l l nether garment of the wearer without uncvc strain on either of the garn'ients.
It consists, preterably, of a vertically ar ranged series of openings or button-holes m the skirt portion, below the bosom, substantially as shown in the accom 'ianying draw? ing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an ordinary type of bosoined shirt with my i111- provement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a like outside both of said iiaps; and available for tastening between the placket of the trousers; the openings in the reinforced skirt-edges being arranged in horizontal pairs, as clearly illustrated, though vertically sewn button holes might perhaps be used with great. advantage. When it is preferred to war the divided shirt inside the drawers, the outer overlapping edge of the skirt may be engaged with the nearest button of the drawersplacket, as shown in Fig. 4, and the other tlap of the drawers buttoned over it, the more securely locking it.
I am aware that shirts have been to vided with tabs depending from the o ttom of the bosom portion provided with a plurality of openings in which may be se cured one of the buttons of the drawers; but such constructions are imsatisfactory in that they do not necessarily hold the drawers at a point closely adjacent to their point of attachment to the shirt, the intervening View of a coat shirt having my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a partial. front View of the shirt-skirt and drawers showin the application of my invention when the shirt is worn outside the drawers,
and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the cooperation of the drawers with a coat shirt worn inside the same.
In the drawing, 1 represents a reinforcing piece applied to the inner surface of the shirt skirt, through which piece and the skirt are a series of openings 9, so located that one of said openings can always be at tached to the nearest, preferably the topmost, button of the placket of the drawers, when the shirt. 1s worn outside; as preterred by many wearers.
When the shirt front is divided thronghout its length, as shown in Fig. 9, it may i be still worn outside, with each of the'then overlapping sides oi. the skirt attached to the nearest drawcrs-button as in Fig. 3; or the edges of the skirt may be alternated With the flaps of the drawers-plackct; one side being fastened between, and the other space being liable to rack up micon'ifortably, and are never available to secure the garments together when the shirt-skirt is worn outside the drawers. This latter arrangement of the garment is, to many wearers, prcl'crable For the reason that it prevents the wrinkling and bunching of the garments in an unconilortable ridge about the person; while at the same time. with my in'iprovement, the drawers may be securely supported wilhoul 'the use ol suspenders and side tapes, and the garments alwayshcld in the correct relation without undue strain upon either. l'ndcr the word shirt I include the upper garment ol' pajamas and undcrshirts of any kind. The expression belowthe bosom does not necessarily imply that the garment should be specifically provided with a "boson1 but is med rather to define that portion thereof where the upper edge of a ncthcr garment, the drawers for instance, usually ends.
i use closely consecutive openings in carrying out my present invention, as distinguished from the ordinary button hole used for 'l'astei'iing the shirt together and which are spaced too "far apart in ordinary use for the purpose of cooperating, within a limited space, with a fastening member in the upper portion of a nether garment.
What I claim is:
lfA shirt, comprising a skirt having a plurality of vertically aiined button-holes therein whereby the shirt may be attached and adjusted to a nether garment'as set I tenth,
f g- A shirt comprising a bosom, and a skirt having a, reinforced portion, said re- CHARLES W. T. DAVIES.
