NITED TATES ABRAHAM FRANK, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,513, dated November 7, 1899.
Application filed March 8, 1899. Serial No. 707,620. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM FR NK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of-New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part, thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to safety cigar-boxes; and it has for .its object to provide a simple and improved box which will effectually obviate the reuse of the box for packing cigars without detection and in violation of revenue provisions.
To this end my invention comprises an improved boX in which the cancellation of the revenue-stamp will be effected by the act of removing the cigars.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the allneXed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cigar-box embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail top or plan view of a partof the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the box, which may be in the main of any suitable or adapted construction. Across one end of the box is arranged an interior partition B, which is provided with a series of openings Z), through which the ends (as shown at c) of the cigars 0 project a short distance when the cigars are in normal packed position in the box.
The revenue-stamp D is sealed across the outer face of the partition B and is provided with a series of extensions d, which project in relation to the openings 1) and are adapted to be sealed over the projecting ends 0 of the cigars, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The projections cl of the stamp or strip D preferably embody two divergent wings, as at d d, which are sealed around the sides of the projecting ends of the cigars.
The end E of the box adjacent to the partition Bis preferably hinged, so that the partition and sealing devices can be conveniently reached or inspected, and said hinged end may be secured by a suitable catch device, as at 6.
Under some circumstances, if it is desired, a safety-strip of paper or other material may be used for sealing the ends of the cigars in lieu of a revenue-stamp.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. When the cigars are originally packed in position, each cigar is in direct connection with or attachment to the sealing-strip D. The cigars may be separately and conveniently removed by simply drawing their projecting ends 0 from the opening I) in the partition, which operation will of course break the sealed connection by tearing off the extension d of the strip D. The unauthorized reuse of the box without detection for packing cigars is thus entirely obviated.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of mere mechanical construction and design as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to structural variations.
If desired, the stamp or strip D may be supplied upon the rear face of the partition 13 instead of upon its front face, and the extensions 61 may be sealed against the side of the cigars. I prefer to provide the partition with a strip of packing P at its end edges, which is preferably formed of rubber or similar elastic material, which will bear against the sides of the box and retain the partition in position, but which will at the same time permit of convenient adjustment of the partition to facilitate the removal of the cigars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An improved safety cigar-box, provided with an interior partition having a series of openings through which the ends of the cigars are adapted to project, in combination with a sealing stamp or strip arranged upon the partition and adapted to have a sealed connection with the ends of the cigars, substantially as set forth.
2. An improved safety cigar-box provided with an interior partition having a series of openings through which the ends of the cigars are adapted to project, in combination with a sealing stamp or strip provided upon said partition, and having a series of extensions projecting with relation to said openings and F tition arranged so that it can be thrown open adapted to be sealed in connection with the I to permit inspection of the partition and sealing-strip, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of March,
