Be it known that I, CHARLES T. BLOOMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of WVayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Pa )er Box, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to cartons or paper boxes, such as are employed for holding and carrying eggs and other commodities, the primary object of the invention being the provision of novel and improved means for fastening and sealing the cover of the box closed.

This invention contemplates the provision of such fastening or sealing means for the box cover, that when the cover is fastened and sealed in closed position, the cover cannot be reopened by maliciously inclined or unwarranted persons for changing or interfering with the contents of the box, without so injuring or mutilating the fastener and seal, or the box and its cover, as to enable the tampering to be readily detected by the purchaser or recipient of the box.

It is also within the scope of the invention, to provide a cover fastener and seal which will be inexpensive and simple in construction, which may be employed upon various paper boxes or cartons, and which will be simple, efficient and thoroughly practical in use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinati'on and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of an egg box or carton embodying the present fastener and seal, and illustrating the cover closed and sealed. Fig. 2 is a reduced plan view of the blank from which the box is formed.

In the drawing, there is illustrated an egg box embodying the body 1, and the back of which is provided with a swinging cover 2". The type of box illustrated is to be taken as conventional, since the present lmprovements may be employed upon various styles of boxes and cartons with equal success and propriety.

In carrying out the invention, the free edge of the cover 2 is provided with a tuck flap 3 which is insertible behind the front wall of the body 1 when the cover 2 is closed, there being a fold line l be tween the cover 2" and its flap 3".

The tuck flap 3" is provided with a slot 5", the ends of which terminate short of and adjacent the fold line 4, and which forms an approximately semi-circular tab 6" projecting from the free portion of the cover 2 within the opening formed in the flap 3 by the slot 5 and which opening extends adjacent to the fold line 4". The slot 5 is so formed, as to provide a relatively small lug or car 7 projecting centrally from the free portion of the tab 6", the lug 7 being tapered from its basal to its free end.

A circular seal 8 is imprinted or otherwise provided upon the tab 6", and the adjacent portion of the cover 2", so that one half of the seal 8 is disposed upon the outer side of the tab 6", while the other half is disposed upon the adjacent portion of the cover 2.

Glue or other adhesive material may be provided upon the back or inner side of the tab 6", and glue or other adhesive mate rial may be disposed upon the outer side of the lug 7", while glue or adhesive material may be provided upon the inner and outer faces or sides of the front wall of the body 1", immediately below and above a horizontal slot 12 provided in thefront wall of the body. In order to fasten and seal the cover 2", after the box has been filled, the tuck flap 8 "is tucked behind the front wall of the body when the cover 2 is swung to closed position, and the tab 6 moves downwardly over the outer side of the front wall, the glue or'mucilage portions of the tab 6 and lug 7 havingbeen previously moistened.

In this manner, the layers of the structure will be firmly held together under the pressure of the contents fof the box, so that the layers of the box will be held, together. while the glue sets or 'hardens. j

It is also evident that either one of the glued portions will enable the cover to be effectively sealed, should the other glued portion fail to adhere properly.

If desired, only one or two of the glued portions need be employed, and if the glued portion between the tab and body is eliminated, it will be obvious that the purchaser or recipient of the box may readily loosen the cover by running a knife or other suitable implement under the tab 6, and cutting the tab, which will immediately release the cover and enable the box to be opened.

Especial attention is directed to the fact that there are portions of the paper or other stock between the ends of the slot 5" and the fold line 4", will tend to hold the tab 6 in the same plane as the tuck flap 3" and consequently when the tuck flap is inserted into the body of the box behind the front wall thereof, the tab 6 will be held snugly and tightly against the outer side or face of the front wall, so that. the glue between the tab and front wall will cause the said portions to adhere properly. Furthermore, should a person attempt tornaliciously pry up the tab 6", those portions of the stock between the ends of the slot 5 and the fold line l will be torn so as to enable the tampering to. be readily. detected.

The variation illustrated in Fig. 5, resembles the first form, with the exception that the lug of the tab and the slot of the front wall of the body are eliminated. Thus, the cover 2 of the body 1 is provided with the tuck flap 3 having an arcuate slot 5 -whose end terminates short of the fold line l between the flap 3 and cover '2, so as to provide an approximately semicircular tab 6 movable over the outer side of the front. wall of the bodyl, the upper edge of the frontowall being provided with the notches or cuts 14: for receiving those portions of the flaps 3 between the ends of Thus, the tab 6 will be held snugly against the front wall of the body when the tuck flap is inserted behindithe said front wall and whereby the. glue may set properly between the tab and body. a

Havingthus described the invention, what is.claimed as new is 1. A paper box having a swinging cover provided with a tuck flap at its free portion insertible behind one wall of the box when the cover is closed, the said flap having a slot terminating short of the cover and providing a tab foldable over the outer side of the said wall and tending to remain in the plane of the flap, said wall having notches for receiving those portions of the flap between the ends of the slot and the cover.
