Description

HUBER'I V. HAILMAN, OF GOTEBO, OKLAHOMA.
PACKAGE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24L, 1917.
Application filed September 30, 1916. Serial No. 123,003.
7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT V. HAJLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gotebo, county of Kiowa, and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Package-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in package fasteners, and has for its object to provide a sticker which can be substituted for twine in fastening packages for mailing, and which embodies novel features of construction whereby the package can be opened for postal inspection without mutilating or destroying the sticker.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a package fastener of this character which can be inexpensively formed of paper, which can be easily handled as a unit and applied to a package at a single operation, which will securely grip the loose ends of the wrapping paper or package and hold them together, and which admits of the package being readily opened for postal inspection.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which one of the complemental members or strips of the package fastener is formed.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, showing the same as partially folded into its final form.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the three elements of the package fastener, showing the same as separated.
Fig. 4: is a plan view of the package fastener showing it in operative position.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The package fastener includes two coinplemental strips 1 and 2 which are arranged in alinement with each other and have their inner ends detachably connected by a removable locking-key 3. These complemental strips 1 and 2 may each be formed from a single sheet of paper, the strip 1 being adapted to be formed from the blank A shown by Fig. 1. The end portions of the blank A are gunnned on one side of the sheet, as indicated at 4 and 5, the gummed portion 4 extending over a considerably larger area than the gummed portion 5, and an intermediate ungunnned portion 7 being provided between the two gummed areas. This ungummed portion 7 is located toward one end of the blank and has a rectangular opening 8 formed therein. The blank is designed to be folded upon the dotted line 9 which extends across the middle of the ungummed area 7 and centrally across the opening 8. The manner of folding the blank is indicated by Fig. 2, and the gummed area 5 is moistened and caused to adhere to the inner end portion of the gummed area 4, thereby providing a pair of ungummed looped tongues 10 at the end of the strip, said tongues being separated by a recess provided by the before mentioned opening 8.
The strip 2 is formed in a similar manner, although the ungummed area is cut at the sides so that the end of the strip is provided with an intermediate looped tongue 11 corresponding to the notch between the loops 10 of the strip 1, and notches 12 adapted to receive the said tongues 10 of the strip 1. The removable locking key 3 is adapted to be inserted through the looped tongues 10 and 11 of the strips 1 and 2 for the purpose of holding the strips together and preventing them from pulling apart. This lockingkey has a pointed end and is preferably given a wedge-shaped formation so that the strips are drawn more closely together as the locking-key is inserted in position. It may also be noted that the lockingkey is flat and cooperates with the flat loops 1-0 and 11 to hold the strips 1 and 2 in substantially the same plane, thereby enabling the package fastener to be easily handled as a unit and readily applied to a package by a single operation. 7
In Figs. 4: and 5 the package fastener is shown as applied to the overlapping ends 14 of a sheet of wrapping paper. It will be obvious that the fastener can be readily applied by moistening the gummed ends i thereof and pressing it firmly in position with the ungummed intermediate zone over the loose ends of the wrapper. These loose ends will then be held securely together so thatthe package can be mailed with safety, although the package can be easily opened for postal inspection by removing the lock ing-key 3.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1; A package fastener including two complemental strips of paper having the outer ends thereof. gummed while the inner ends thereof are returned to provide longitudt nally projecting loops, and a separate removable key insertible through the loops to hold the strips detachably together.
2. A package fastener including two complemental strips of paper having the outer ends thereof gummed while the inner ends thereof are returned and out to form small longitudinally projecting looped tongues which have a staggered relation to each other, and a separate removable key insertible through the said looped tongues to hold the strips detachably together.
3. A package fastener including two coinplemental stripsof paper having the outer ends thereof gummed' While-the inner ends thereof'are returned and out to form small longitudinally projecting looped tongues which have a staggered relation to each other, and a separate removable Wedgeshaped locking key insertible through the loops to draw the strips toward each other and look them together.
I HUBERT V. HAILMAN.
