Description

液晶介質
本發明係關於一種液晶介質,係關於其於光電目的之用途,且係關於包含該介質之顯示器。
業內甚需要LCD(液晶顯示器),具體而言係其具有極高比電阻同時具有大工作溫度範圍、甚至於低溫亦可達成的短響應時間以及低閾值電壓之矩陣型液晶顯示器。具體而言,需要用於TN(扭轉向列型)顯示器單元之LC介質,其可在該等單元中提供以下優點:-擴大向列相範圍(尤其直至低溫)-於極低溫度下之切換能力(戶外使用、汽車、航空電子設備)-對UV輻射之抵抗性增加(更長的使用壽命)。
對於TN與STN(超扭轉TN)單元而言,期望尤其於低溫下具有更大可多工性、更低閾值電壓及更寬向列相範圍之LC介質。亦期望進一步增寬可用參數範圍(透明點、碟狀-向列轉變或熔點、黏度、介電參數、彈性參數)。
對於TV及監視器應用而言,期望具有快響應時間及低閾值電壓以及一良好LTS(低溫穩定性)之LC介質。此外,端視可切換LC層之厚度而定,可能需要一中等或高雙折射率。
然而,先前技術中已知之LC介質之缺點係其通常不能同時達成所有該等要求且對LC單元之其他參數無不利影響。
本發明之目的係提供LC介質,具體而言其係用於諸如TFT(薄膜晶體管)型之彼等主動矩陣顯示器且通常用於TN或STN顯示器,該等介質不具有上述缺點或僅具有較少缺點,且較佳同時具有極高比電阻、低閾值電壓、改良之LTS及快切換時間。另一目的係擴展LC介質庫以供專業人員使用。其他目的可自以下闡述顯而易見。
已發現,若在顯示器中使用本發明之LC介質可達成該等目的。
因此,本發明係關於一種LC介質,其包含:-15至25%(較佳18至22%)的一或多種式I化合物,-5至15%(較佳6至10%)的一或多種式II化合物,-1至10%(較佳2至5%)的一或多種式III化合物,-1至8%(較佳2至4%)的一或多種式IV化合物,-5至15%(較佳8至12%)的一或多種式V化合物,-20至30%(較佳22至27%)的一或多種式VI化合物,-20至30%(較佳24至28%)的一或多種式VII化合物,-3至10%(較佳4至8%)的一或多種式VIII化合物, 其中R1 與R5 彼此獨立係甲基、乙基、正丙基、正丁基、正戊基或正己基,R2 係甲氧基、乙氧基、正丙氧基、正丁氧基或正戊氧基,R3 係乙烯基或1E-丙烯基,R4 係乙烯基或3-丁烯基。
尤佳者係一包含以下化合物之LC介質:
尤佳者係一包含以下之LC介質:-6至10%的式Ia化合物,-6至10%的式Ib化合物,-2至5%的式Ic化合物,-6至10%的式IIa化合物,-2至5%的式IIIa化合物,-2至4%的式IVa化合物,-8至12%的式Va化合物,-12至17%的式VIa化合物,-8至12%的式VIb化合物,-11至15%的式VIIa化合物,-11至15%的式VIIb化合物,-2至4%的式VIIIa化合物,-2至4%的式VIIIb化合物。
在純狀態下,式I-VIII之化合物係無色的且可在有利於光電應用之溫度範圍內形成液晶中間相。其具有化學、熱且光穩定性。
可藉由如文獻(例如在標準著作中,例如Houben-Weyl,Methoden der organischen Chemie[Methods of Organic Chemistry],Georg-Thieme-Verlag,Stuttgart)中所闡述的本身已知之方法來製備式I-VIII之化合物,確切地講係在已知且適用於該等反應之反應條件下實施此製備。此處亦可使用其本身已知之各種變體,但此處不再詳細論述。
本發明亦係關於包含該類型LC介質之光電顯示器,且係關於該等LC介質於光電目的之用途。極佳者係TFT顯示器,其具有兩個平面平行外板(其可與一框架一起形成一單元)、用於切換外板上各像素之積體非線性元件及位於該單元內且具有正介電各向異性及高比電阻之本發明向列LC介質。
本發明之LC混合物能夠顯著增寬可用參數範圍。具體而言,已發現,其具有一快切換時間、低閾值電壓、良好LTS、高比電阻、高UV穩定性及高容量保持比(HR)[如S.Matsumoto等人之Liquid Crystals 5,1320(1989);K.Niwa等人之Proc.SID Conference,San Francisco,1984年6月,304頁(1984);G.Weber等人之Liquid Crystals 5,1381(1989)中之定義]。而且,透明點、旋轉黏度γ1 、低△n及介電各向異性之可達成組合皆優於自先前技術已知之材料。
本發明LC顯示器之構造(包括偏光板、電極基板及經表面處理之電極)與該類型顯示器之習知構造一致。術語"習知構造"涵蓋LC顯示器之所有衍生及修改形式,尤其包括基於多晶Si TFT或MIM(金屬-絕緣體-金屬)之矩陣顯示元件。然而,本發明之顯示器與基於TN單元之習知顯示器之間之明顯差異在於LC層參數之選擇。
可根據本發明使用之LC混合物可以一本身習知之方式製備。概言之,較佳於高溫下將期望量之用量較少組份溶於構成主要部分之組份中。亦可混合該等組份存於一有機溶劑(例如,丙酮、氯仿或甲醇)中之溶液,且在充分混合後再藉由(例如)蒸餾去除該溶劑。
該LC介質亦可包含彼等熟習該項技術者已熟知並闡述於文獻中之其他添加劑。舉例而言,可添加0至15%之多色染料、穩定劑或對掌性摻雜劑。適宜之摻雜劑與穩定劑展示於下文中。

除非在上下文中特別說明,否則,百分比皆係重量百分比。所有溫度皆係以攝氏度給出。m.p.表示熔點,cl.p.=透明點。此外,C=晶態,N=向列相,S=碟狀相且I=各向同性相。該等符號之間之數據代表轉變溫度。△n表示光學各向異性且n0 表示折射率(589奈米,20℃)。流動黏度v2 0 (平方毫米/秒)及旋轉黏度γ1 [mPa.s]各皆係於20℃下測定。V1 0 表示10%透射(垂直於板表面之視角)時之電壓。to n 表示接通時間且to f f 表示在一對應於2倍V1 0 值之操作電壓下之切斷時間。△ε表示介電各向異性(△ε=ε∥-ε⊥,其中ε∥表示平行於分子縱軸之介電常數且ε⊥表示垂直於分子縱軸之介電常數)。除非另有說明,否則,光電數據係於20℃在一TN單元中於第一最小值(即,d.△n值為0.5微米)時量測。除非另有說明,否則,該等光學數據皆係於20℃下量測。

Claims (4)

  1. 一種液晶介質,其包含:- 15至25%的一或多種式I化合物,- 5至15%的一或多種式II化合物,- 1至10%的一或多種式III化合物,- 1至8%的一或多種式IV化合物,- 5至15%的一或多種式V化合物,- 20至30%的一或多種式VI化合物,- 20至30%的一或多種式VII化合物,- 3至10%的一或多種式VIII化合物, 其中R1 與R5 彼此獨立係甲基、乙基、正丙基、正丁基、正戊基或正己基,R2 係甲氧基、乙氧基、正丙氧基、正丁氧基或正戊氧基,R3 係乙烯基或1E-丙烯基,R4 係乙烯基或3-丁烯基。
