本发明涉及一种基于极性化合物的混合物的液晶介质,涉及它用于电光学目的的用途,和涉及含有这种介质的显示器。
Description
本发明涉及一种液晶介质,涉及它用于电光学目的的用途,和涉及含有这种介质的显示器。
对LCD(液晶显示器)存在着极大需求,特别是对矩阵型的LCD,其具有非常高的比电阻,同时又具有大的操作温度范围,甚至在低温下也具有短的响应时间,和低的阈值电压。特别地,需要用于TN(扭转向列型)显示器液晶盒的LC介质,其有助于在液晶盒方面的下述优点:
-扩宽的向列相范围(特别是向下直至低温)
-在极低温度下的切换能力(户外使用、汽车、航空用电子设备)
-增加的抗UV辐射性(更长久的使用寿命)。
对于TN和STN(超扭转TN)液晶盒来说,需要LC介质,其能实现较大的多路传输性、较低的阈值电压和较宽的向列相范围,特别是在低温下。进一步扩宽有效参数范围(澄清点、近晶-向列相转变点或熔点、粘度、介电参数、弹性参数)也是需要的。
对于TV和监视器应用来说,需要LC介质,其具有快的响应时间和低的阀值电压,此外还具有良好的LTS(低温稳定性)。同时,取决于可切换的LC层的厚度,中等或高的双折射可能是需要的。
然而,现有技术中已知的LC介质具有缺点,即它们常常不允许同时达到所有这些要求,而不会不利地影响LC液晶盒的其它参数。
本发明的目的是提供LC介质,特别是用于有源矩阵显示器如TFT(薄膜晶体管)型的那些,和一般地用于TN或STN显示器的LC介质,其没有或仅在降低的程度上具有上述缺点,并且优选同时具有非常高的比电阻、低的阈值电压、改进的LTS和快的切换时间。本发明的另一个目的是扩大本领域技术人员可利用的LC介质的资源库。从下述描述中,其它目的会即刻显而易见。
现已发现,如果将根据本发明的LC介质用于显示器中,则这些目 的就可以实现。
本发明因此涉及一种LC介质,其包含:
-15-25%,优选18-22%的一种或多种通式I的化合物,
-5-15%,优选6-10%的一种或多种通式II的化合物,
-1-10%,优选2-5%的一种或多种通式III的化合物,
-1-8%,优选2-4%的一种或多种通式IV的化合物,
-5-15%,优选8-12%的一种或多种通式V的化合物,
-20-30%,优选22-27%的一种或多种通式VI的化合物,
-20-30%,优选24-28%的一种或多种通式VII的化合物,
-3-10%,优选4-8%的一种或多种通式VIII的化合物,
其中,
R1和R5彼此独立地为甲基、乙基、正丙基、正丁基、正戊基或正己基,
R2为甲氧基、乙氧基、正丙氧基、正丁氧基或正戊氧基,
R3为乙烯基或1E-丙烯基,
R4为乙烯基或3-丁烯基。
特别优选的是包含下述化合物的LC介质:
进一步优选包含下述化合物的LC介质:
-6-10%的结构式Ia的化合物,
-6-10%的结构式Ib的化合物,
-2-5%的结构式Ic的化合物,
-6-10%的结构式IIa的化合物,
-2-5%的结构式IIIa的化合物,
-2-4%的结构式IVa的化合物,
-8-12%的结构式Va的化合物,
-12-17%的结构式VIa的化合物,
-8-12%的结构式VIb的化合物,
-11-15%的结构式VIIa的化合物,
-11-15%的结构式VIIb的化合物,
-2-4%的结构式VIIIa的化合物,
-2-4%的结构式VIIIb的化合物。
在纯态下,通式I-VIII的化合物是无色的,并在如下温度范围中形成液晶中介相(mesophases),所述温度范围有利地定位用于电光学用途。它们是化学、热稳定的和对光稳定的。
通式I-VIII的化合物通过自身已知的方法制备,如描述于文献中(例如在标准著作中,诸如Houben-Weyl,Methoden der organischenChemie(有机化学方法)、Georg-Thieme出版社,Stuttgart),确切地说是在如下反应条件下,所述反应条件是已知的,和适于所述的反应。这里,也可使用自身已知的但并未在此更详细提及的各种变换形式。
本发明也涉及含有这种类型LC介质的电光显示器,和涉及这些LC介质用于电光学目的的用途。非常优选的是TFT显示器,其具有两个平面平行的外部板,所述板与框架一起形成液晶盒,该显示器还具有在外部板上用于切换单个像素的整合入的非线性元件,和具有位于液晶盒中的根据本发明的向列型LC介质,所述介质具有正介电各向异性和高的比电阻。
根据本发明的LC混合物能实现显著扩宽有效参数变化范围。特别是,发现它们具有快的切换时间、低的阈值电压、良好的LTS、高的比电阻、高的UV稳定性和高的电容量(capacity)保持比(HR)[如S.Matsumoto等人,Liquid Crystals 5,1320(1989);K.Niwa等人,Proc.SID Conference,San Francisco,1984年6月,第304页(1984);G.Weber等人,Liquid Crystals 5,1381(1989)中所定义的]。同样,可达到的由澄清点、旋转粘度γ1、低的Δn和介电各向异性的组合也优于现有技术中已知的材料。
根据本发明的LC显示器的构造,包括起偏振器、电极基板和经表面处理的电极,与这种类型显示器的常规构造相一致。术语“常规构造”包括所有的LC显示器的衍生型和变型,特别是包括基于多晶SiTFT或MIM(金属-绝缘体-金属)的矩阵显示器元件。但是,根据本发明的显示器与基于TN液晶盒的常规显示器间的显著差异是在于LC层的参数的选择。
可根据本发明使用的LC混合物通过自身常规的方法制备。通常,将所需量的以较少量使用的组分溶解在构成主要成分的组分中,有利地在升高的温度下进行。也可以将各组分在有机溶剂中的溶液混合,其中所述溶剂例如丙酮、氯仿或甲醇,和在充分混合后再除去溶剂,例如通过蒸馏。
LC介质也可进一步包含本领域技术人员已知的和在文献中描述的添加剂。例如,可以加入0-15%的多色染料、稳定剂或手性掺杂剂。适合的掺杂剂和稳定剂显示在下文中。

下述列举显示可能的手性掺杂剂,其可以优选以0.1-10wt%,非常优选0.1-6wt%的比例添加到根据本发明的LC介质中:

示对于10%传输(垂直于板表面的视角)的电压。t开表示接通时间和t 关表示切断时间,其是在对应于V10值的2倍的操作电压下。Δε表示介电各向异性(Δε=ε‖-ε⊥,其中ε‖表示平行于纵向分子轴的介电常数,和ε⊥表示垂直于纵向分子轴的介电常数)。除非另外明确说明,电光学数据在TN液晶盒中在第一最小值(即在d·Δn值为0.5μm)下在20℃下测量。除非另外明确说明,光学数据在20℃下测量。

-8-12%的结构式Va的化合物,
-12-17%的结构式VIa的化合物,
-8-12%的结构式VIb的化合物,
-11-15%的结构式VIIa的化合物,
-11-15%的结构式VIIb的化合物,
-2-4%的结构式VIIIa的化合物,
-2-4%的结构式VIIIb的化合物。
4. 根据权利要求1-3中至少一项的液晶介质用于电光学目的的用途。
5. 电光液晶显示器,其包含根据权利要求1-3中至少一项的液晶介质。
