I det første trinnet blir esteren 1 hydrogenert ved anvendelse av katalysatorer sa som Raney-nikkel, palladium pa trekull eller rhodium katalysator eller andre nikkel eller palladium inneholdende katalysator i et oppløsningsmiddel sa som metanol, etanol, isopropanol, etylacetat, eddiksyre, 1,4-dioksan, kloroform eller dietyleter ved en egnet temperatur i omradet fra 20°C til 80°C
I det andre trinnet ble alkoholen 2 behandlet med trifenylfosfm, imidazol og jod i et oppløsningsmiddel sa som eter, tetrahydrofuran eller acetonitril ved 0°C til romtemperatur, hvilket ga jodidet 3
I det tredje trinnet blir jodidet 3 behandlet med et egnet reduksjonsmiddel sa som litium-aluminiumhydnd eller litiumborhydrid i et oppløsningsmiddel sa som eter eller tetrahydrofuran ved en temperatur mellom 0°C og eller tilbakeløp, for a gi alkoholen 4
