제 3도는 각각 스메틱A, 스메틱C 및 스메틱C*물질의 정렬된 액정 물질층의 형태도이다.

Claims (28)

  1. 액정 물질층을 함유하도록 스페이서(spacer)에 의해 간격을 두고 떨어져 있는 두 개의 셀벽(여기에서, 벽의 내부표면은 그 위에 형성된 적극 구조를 가지며 적어도 하나의 벽 표면은 액정 정렬(alignment)을 제공하기 위해 처리된다.)을 제공하고 : 주위 온도 보다 높은 온도에서 콜레스테릭 상을 지니며 콜레스테릭 상으로부터 스메틱상으로의 전이 온도보다 적어도 0.1℃ 높은 온도에서 층두께 d의 절반 이상인 콜레스테릭 피치 P 및 키랄 스메틱상 내에 현저한 자발적 편광도(polarization)Ps를 갖는 표제와 키랄 스메틱 액정 물질을 키랄 스메틱상 및 등방성상 사이에 제공하고 : 혼합물을 콜레스테릭 상으로 가열하고 : 혼합물을 벽사이 공간에 도입하고 밀봉하여, 물질을 표제의 키랄 스메틱상으로 냉각시키는 단계를 포함하는 액정 디스플레이 장치의 제조방법.
  2. 제 1항에 있어서, 단일 방향 볼트 펄스(pulse)를 공급하면서 스메틱/콜레스테릭 전이 온도 이상으로 재가열하고 천천히 냉각시키는 단계를 추가로 포함하는 방법.
  3. 제 1항에 있어서, 물질을 콜레스테릭/스메틱상 전이 온도의 ±5℃내로 분당 20℃미만의 속도로 냉각시키는 방법.
  4. 제 1항에 있어서, 물질을 콜레스테릭/스메틱상 전이 온도의 ±5℃내로 분당 2℃미만의 속도로 냉각시키는 방법.
  5. 제 1항에 있어서, 양쪽 벽이 표면 정렬 처리되고 셀이 같은 방향으로 평행방향인 정렬로 배열된 방법.
  6. 제 1항에 있어서, 양쪽 벽이 표면 정렬 처리되고 셀이 반대방향으로 평행방향인 정렬로 배열된 방법.
  7. 제 1항에 있어서, 정렬이 단일방향 러빙(rubbing)에 의해 제공되는 방법.
  8. 제 1항에 있어서, 정렬이 실리콘 옥사이드의 단사정계(oblique)증발에 의해 제공되는 방법.
  9. 각각이 전극구조를 이루고 있으며 적어도 하나의 벽 표면이 액정 분자를 정렬시키도록 처리된 두 개의 셀 벽 사이에 함유된 표제의 키랄 스메틱 액정 물질층, 제 1선형 편광체판(polarizer) 및 제 2편광제판 또는 액정 물질내 이색 염료(dichoric dye)를 함유(여기에서, 액정물질은 통상의 장치 조작 온도에서는 표제의 카랄스메틱상을 지니고 주위온도 보다 높은 온도에서는 콜레스테릭 상을 지니며, 콜레스테릭상으로부터 스메틱상으로의 전이 온도 보다 적어도 0.1℃ 높은 온도에서 콜레스테릭상내에 층 두께 d의 절반이상인 콜레스테릭 피치 및 실질적인 자발적 편광도를 지닌다)하는 액정 장치.
  10. 제 9항에 있어서, 셀벽이 액정 분자를 동일한 방향으로 정렬하기 위해 표면 처리되었고 층 두께를 가로지르는 비스듬히 모난(splayed) 형태를 지닌 장치.
  11. 제 9항에 있어서, 전극이 행렬 형식으로 배열된 스트립(strip) 전극으로서 형성된 장치.
  12. 제 9항에 있어서, 전극이 세그먼트(segment) 형식으로 배열된 스트립 전극으로서 형성된 장치
  13. 제 9항에 있어서, 전극이 쉬이트(sheet) 전극으로서 형성된 장치.
  14. 제 9항에 있어서, 액정층 두께가 15㎛ 이하인 장치.
  15. 제 9항에 있어서, 콜레스테릭피치 P가 전이온도 보다 적어도 5℃높은 온도에서 d/2 이상인 장치.
  16. 제 9항에 있어서, 제 1편광체판이 중성 편광체판이고 제 2편광체판이 그의 광학적 축과 직교되도록 배열된 두 개의 상이하게 착색된 편광체판에 의해 대체된 장치.
  17. 제 9항에 있어서, 제 1편광체판이 그의 개폐상태중 어느 하나에서 액정 분자 정렬에 대해 그의 광학적 축이 평행되도록 배열되고, 제 2편광체판이 제 1편광체판에 대해 그의 광학적 축이 교차되도록 배열된 장치.
  18. 제 9항에 있어서, 콜레스테릭/스메틱 전이온도의 0.1℃ 이내에서의 콜레스테릭 피치가 액정층 두께의 4배 이상인 장치.
  19. 제 9항에 있어서, 액정 물질을 그의 두가지 상이한 상태로 개폐하기 위해 반대 방향 편광성의 두가지 직류 볼트를 전극 구조에 적용시키는 수단을 추가로 포함하는 장치.
  20. 통상의 장치조작 온도에서 표제의 키랄 스메틱상을 가지고 승온에서 콜레스테릭상을 갖는 물질을 함유하며, 콜레스티릭상으로부터 스메틱상으로의 전이 온도 보다 적어도 0.1℃ 높은 온도에서 콜레스테릭상 내에 4㎛이상의 콜레스테릭 피치와 스메틱상내에 실질적인 자발적 편광계수 Ps를 지니는 것을 특징으로 하는, 제 1항에 따른 방법에 이용되는 액정 물질 혼합물.
  21. 제 20항에 있어서, 물질이 온도에 따라 하기의 상을 갖는 물질 : 등방성상콜레스테릭상스메틱A상키랄 스메틱상고체상.
  22. 제 20항에 있어서, 물질이 온도에 따라 하기의 상을 갖는 물질 : 등방성상콜레스테릭상키랄 스메틱상고체상.
  23. 제 20항에 있어서, 콜레스테릭 상에서 피치가 콜레스테릭/스메틱상 전이 온도 보다 5℃이하로 높은 범위의 온도에 걸쳐서 4㎛이상인 물질.
  24. 제 20항에 있어서, 스메틱 피치가 2㎛이상인 물질.
  25. 제 20항에 있어서, 자발적 편광도가 0.1nC/㎠이상인 물질
  26. 제 20항에 있어서, 콜레스테릭/스메틱 상전이 온도가 40℃이상인 물질.
  27. 제 20항에 있어서, 콜레스테릭/스메틱 상전이 온도가 100℃이상인 물질.
