Abstract

Liquid crystal display cell substrates for providing a 25 DEG to 90 DEG out of plane tilted alignment are obtained by treatment to give a homeotropic alignment followed by oblique evaporation of e.g. silicon monoxide, magnesium fluoride, or silicon dioxide, onto the slide surface. The evaporation angle is less than 15 DEG to the slide surface and is typically 5 DEG . Increasing the thickness of the evaporated material lowers the final tilt angle from 90 DEG toward 25 DEG . The homeotropic alignment may be provided by plasma cleaning, immersion in chromosulphuric acid and followed by baking, or detergent cleaning with ultrasonic agitation followed by baking.
