엘라스토머 및 금속 섬유 간의 상용성을 개선시키기 위해, 아연 디메틸아크릴레이트(ZDMA) (Sartomer Company, Inc. : 상표명 "Saret 634")를 사용하였다. ZDMA는 잘 알려진 고무-금속 결합제이다. 이것은 엘라스토머 매트릭스와 금속 섬유 사이의 상용성을 개선시키기 위해 이 화합물에 사용하였다. 기타 결합제도 본 발명의 화합물에 사용할 수 있는데, 말레산 무수물 그래프트 폴리올레핀, 아크릴산 그래프트 폴리올레핀, 디아크릴산 아연, 카르복실산 코발트, 지르콘산 염 및 티탄산 염을 포함한다. 표 6은 본 실시예에서 각각 화합물 C, D, E에 사용된 레시피를 나타낸다. 화합물 (E)만이 금속 섬유, 즉 BEKI-Shield GR을 함유한다.
도 9는 신장 모듈러스의 비교를 나타낸다. 25% 및 50% 연신율에서 신장 모듈러스는 금속 섬유 로딩 수준을 증가시킴에 따라 증가함을 알 수 있다. 그러나, 100% 연신율에서의 모듈러스는 금속 섬유 로딩 증가로 유의적으로 변화되지 않는다. 일반적으로 엘라스토머 분자량이 높을수록, 화합물에 투입될 수 있는, 금속 섬유를 포함하는 필러의 로딩이 높아진다. 즉, 화합물에 로딩될 수 있는 금속 섬유의 양은 엘라스토머 분자량에 의존한다. 예를 들어, 약 100,000 g/mol 내지 약 300,000 g/mol 범위인 분자량을 갖는 EPDM을 사용하는 경우, 원하는 물리적 특성을 유지하면서, 금속 섬유 로딩은 약 50phr 내지 약 150phr 범위일 수 있다.
