Description
[1.液晶表示部10の構成]
本実施形態の液晶表示部10は、例えば電子腕時計に使用される液晶表示パネルである。図1は、本実施形態に係る液晶表示部10の断面図である。液晶表示部10は、第1の液晶表示パネル12と第2の液晶表示パネル14とを備え、第1の液晶表示パネル12と第2の液晶表示パネル14とが透明部材(例えば空気層)13を介して積層される。
次に、図1に示した液晶表示部10を備えた液晶表示装置50の構成について説明する。以下では、本実施形態の液晶表示装置50として、電子腕時計を例に挙げて説明する。図2A及び図2Bは、電子腕時計50の概略図である。図2Aは、第1の液晶表示パネル12によるキャラクタ表示の一例を示している。図2Bは、第2の液晶表示パネル14による情報表示の一例を示している。
次に、第1の液晶表示パネル12及び第2の液晶表示パネル14を備えた液晶表示部10の動作について説明する。前述したように、液晶表示部10の動作は、表示駆動部57及び制御部51により制御される。まず、キャラクタ表示の動作について説明する。図4は、キャラクタ表示における液晶表示部10の動作を説明する図である。
次に、電子腕時計50の動作について説明する。まず、傾き検知部59の動作について説明する。図6は、傾き検知部59の検知動作を説明する図である。
以上詳述したように第1の実施形態では、電子腕時計(液晶表示装置)50は、消費電力の小さい第1の液晶表示パネル12と消費電力の大きい第2の液晶表示パネル14とが積層された液晶表示部10を備え、第1の液晶表示パネル12は、時計表示を含むキャラクタ表示を行い、第2の液晶表示パネル14は、キャラクタ表示より情報量が多い情報表示を行うようにしている。さらに、キャラクタ表示中は、消費電力の大きい第2の液晶表示パネル14及びバックライト15をオフするようにしている。
第2の実施形態は、第2の液晶表示パネル14として、半透過型液晶表示パネルを使用した構成例である。図11は、第2の実施形態に係る液晶表示部10の断面図である。
Claims (7)
- 対向配置された第1及び第2の基板と、前記第1及び第2の基板間に挟まれた高分子分散型または高分子ネットワーク型の第1の液晶層とを備える第1の液晶表示パネルと、
対向配置された第3及び第4の基板と、前記第3及び第4の基板間に挟まれた第2の液晶層と、前記第3の基板に設けられたカラーフィルタと、前記第3及び第4の基板にそれぞれ設けられた第1及び第2の偏光板とを備える第2の液晶表示パネルと、
前記第2の基板に接するようにして前記第1及び第2の液晶表示パネル間に挟まれ、前記第2の基板の屈折率と異なる屈折率を有する透明部材と、
を具備することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記透明部材は、空気層であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2の液晶表示パネルは、ノーマリブラック方式、かつ垂直配向(VA)モードであることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2の液晶表示パネルは、複数の画素を有し、
前記複数の画素の各々は、反射領域と透過領域とを有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1の液晶表示パネルは、キャラクタ表示を行い、
前記第2の液晶表示パネルは、前記キャラクタ表示より情報量が多い情報表示を行い、
前記キャラクタ表示において、前記第1の液晶表示パネルが駆動され、かつ前記第2の液晶表示パネルがオフされ、
前記情報表示において、前記第1の液晶表示パネルが透過状態に設定され、かつ前記第2の液晶表示パネルが駆動されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1の液晶表示パネルの上方に設けられたタッチパネルと、
前記タッチパネルが検知するタッチ操作に応じて、前記キャラクタ表示と前記情報表示とを切り替える制御部と、
をさらに具備することを特徴とする請求項5に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 表示面の傾きを検出する検出部と、
前記検出部の検出結果に応じて、前記第1及び第2の液晶表示パネルのオン/オフを制御する制御部と、
をさらに具備することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
