図1は、第1実施形態の液晶表示装置50の斜視図である。

下側ケース51は、バックライト11、第1液晶表示パネル12、及び第2液晶表示パネル14を順に収容し、支持している。上側ケース52は、下側ケース51に被せられるとともに、下側ケース51に固定される。上側ケース52は、画像を表示するための光を通す開口部52Aを有している。
図2(a)は、第2液晶表示パネル14の斜視図、図2(b)は、第1液晶表示パネル12の斜視図、図2(c)は、バックライト11の斜視図である。
第1液晶表示パネル12には、配線部53が接続される。配線部53は、例えばFPCから構成される。第1液晶表示パネル12には、ドライバー12Aが設けられる。ドライバー12Aは、外部から送られる各種制御信号及び各種電圧を用いて、画素24(具体的には、TFT25、画素電極26、及び共通電極29)を駆動する。配線部53、54は、電源回路、及び制御回路などに接続される。
図3は、第1実施形態に係る液晶表示装置50の液晶表示部10の断面図である。液晶表示部10は、第1液晶表示パネル12と第2液晶表示パネル14とを備えている。第1液晶表示パネル12と第2液晶表示パネル14とは、透明部材(例えば空気層)13aを介して積層される。
次に、第1液晶表示パネル12の構造について説明する。第1液晶表示パネル12は、画素ごとにアクティブ素子を配置したアクティブマトリクス方式が用いられる。
第1液晶表示パネル12は、アクティブ素子(スイッチング素子)としてのTFT(Thin Film Transistor)、及び画素電極等が形成されるTFT基板20と、カラーフィルター及び共通電極が形成されかつTFT基板20に対向配置されるカラーフィルター基板(CF基板)21と、TFT基板20及びCF基板21間に挟持された液晶層22とを備える。TFT基板20及びCF基板21はそれぞれ、透明基板(例えば、ガラス基板)から構成される。
次に、第2液晶表示パネル14の構造について説明する。第2液晶表示パネル14は、共通電極が形成される下側基板40と、表示電極が形成されかつ下側基板40に対向配置される上側基板41と、下側基板40及び上側基板41間に挟持された液晶層42とを備える。上側基板41の液晶層42と反対側の面が、液晶表示部10の表示面に対応する。下側基板40及び上側基板41はそれぞれ、透明基板(例えば、ガラス基板)から構成される。
以上詳述したように第1実施形態では、液晶表示装置50は、表示機能の異なる第1液晶表示パネル12及び第2液晶表示パネル14を備え、第1液晶表示パネル12と第2液晶表示パネル14とが空気層(空間)13aを介して積層される。第1液晶表示パネル12と第2液晶表示パネル14とが空気層(空間)13aを介して積層される。第1液晶表示パネル12と第2液晶表示パネル14とは、ケース(下側ケース51及び上側ケース52からなる)内に収容される。ケースには、第1液晶表示パネル12に接続された配線部53と、第2液晶表示パネル14に接続された配線部54とを外部に引き出すための開口部が設けられる。
図4は、第2実施形態に係る液晶表示装置50の液晶表示部10の断面図である。
本実施形態では、第1液晶表示パネル12のCF基板21の表示面側には、位相差板33、偏光板34、及び、反射防止層(AR(Anti-Reflection)層)35が設けられる。本実施形態では、偏光板34の空気層13a側の表面は平坦化されている。たとえば、空気層13a側の表面の表面粗さが所定値以下となるように平坦化された偏光板34を用いてもよく、偏光板34の空気層13a側の表面に例えば平坦化膜(図示せず)を形成して、偏光板34の空気層13a側の表面の表面粗さが所定値以下となるようにしてもよい。反射防止層35は、第1液晶表示パネル12の空気層13a側の平坦化された表面と空気層13aとの間に配置される。
反射防止層35は、偏光板34の空気層13a側の平坦化された面上に貼り付けて固定され、偏光板34とは別体のフィルムであっても良く、偏光板34の空気層13a側の平坦化された面上に材料を蒸着等することにより形成された薄膜であってもよい。反射防止層35は、例えば偏光板34よりも屈折率の低い層である。
上記のように、本実施形態の液晶表示装置50によれば、表示特性が劣化するのを抑制可能な表示装置を提供することができる。
なお、第2実施形態では、第2液晶表示パネル14の下側基板40と空気層13a側に設けられた反射防止フィルム48と、第1液晶表示パネル12の空気層13a側において平坦化された表面に設けられた反射防止層35との両方を備えていたが、液晶表示装置50は、反射防止フィルム48と反射防止層35との少なくとも一方を備えることにより、上述の第1実施形態および第2実施形態と同様の効果を得ることができるものである。したがって、本実施形態の液晶表示装置50において、反射防止フィルム48と反射防止層35との一方を省略しても構わない。
