また、上記表面被覆切削工具は、切削に関与する部分の増加表面積比が0.0005以上0.07以下とすることができる。
本発明の表面被覆切削工具は、基材と、該基材上に形成された被膜とを備える構成を有している。
上記基材としては、このような切削工具の基材として知られる従来公知のものを特に限定なく使用することができる。たとえば、このような基材として、超硬合金(たとえばWC基超硬合金、WCの他、Coを含み、あるいはさらにTi、Ta、Nb等の炭窒化物を添加したものも含む)、サーメット(TiC、TiN、TiCN等を主成分とするもの)、高速度鋼、セラミックス(炭化チタン、炭化硅素、窒化硅素、窒化アルミニウム、酸化アルミニウムなど)、立方晶型窒化硼素焼結体、ダイヤモンド焼結体、窒化硅素焼結体、または酸化アルミニウムと炭化チタンとからなる混合体等を挙げることができる。
図3に示したように上記基材8上に形成される被膜9は、主として更なる靭性の向上と更なる耐摩耗性の向上とを目的として形成されるものであり、TiCNからなる第1被膜10と、α型Al2O3からなる第2被膜11とを含むものである。
本発明の第1被膜は、上記基材と後述の第2被膜との間に位置し、TiCNからなるものであって引張応力S1を有するものである。この第1被膜は非常に高い硬度を有することから、これが第2被膜と基材との間に位置することにより、耐摩耗性を飛躍的に向上させる作用を奏するものである。
本発明の第2被膜は、α型Al2O3からなるものであって圧縮応力S2を有するものである。第2被膜をこのような素材で構成し、基材の最表面または最表面近傍に形成することにより、基材の酸化を効果的に防止するとともに切削加工時において被削材の構成元素が基材側に拡散することを極めて有効に防止することができる。そして、このような酸化や拡散は、切削加工時における発熱により助長されることになるが、α型Al2O3は高温安定性にも優れているため、これらの効果が相乗的に作用することにより極めて優れた効果が示される。
ここで圧縮応力とは、被膜に存する内部応力(固有ひずみ)の一種であって、「−」(マイナス)の数値(単位:MPa)で表される応力をいう。このため、圧縮応力が大きいという概念は、上記数値の絶対値が大きくなることを示し、また、圧縮応力が小さいという概念は、上記数値の絶対値が小さくなることを示す。
本発明の表面被覆切削工具は、切削に関与する部分の増加表面積比が0.0005以上0.07以下となる表面粗度を有することが好ましい。さらに好ましくは、該増加表面積比は、その上限が0.05、より好ましくは0.02、その下限が0.001、より好ましくは0.005である。
以下、実施例を挙げて本発明をより詳細に説明するが、本発明はこれらに限定されるものではない。
WC:86質量%、Co:8.0質量%、TiC:2.0質量%、NbC:2.0質量%、ZrC:2.0質量%の配合割合で各原材料粉末をボールミルを用いて72時間湿式混合した。続いて、その混合物を乾燥した後、プレス成形した。そしてその後、真空雰囲気中で1420℃、1時間の条件で焼結を行なった。

Claims (7)
- 基材(8)と、該基材(8)上に形成された被膜(9)とを備える表面被覆切削工具(1)であって、
前記被膜(9)は、TiCNからなる第1被膜(10)と、α型Al2O3からなる第2被膜(11)とを含み、
前記第1被膜(10)は、前記基材(8)と前記第2被膜(11)との間に位置し、かつ引張応力S1を有し、
前記第2被膜(11)は、圧縮応力S2を有するとともに、
前記引張応力S1と前記圧縮応力S2とが以下の式(I)によって規定されることを特徴とする表面被覆切削工具(1)。
400MPa≦|S2−S1|≦3500MPa・・・(I) - 前記表面被覆切削工具(1)は、切削に関与する部分の増加表面積比が0.0005以上0.07以下となることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表面被覆切削工具(1)。
- 前記第1被膜(10)は、アスペクト比が3以上である柱状構造を有するとともに、その平均粒径が0.05μm以上1.5μm以下である結晶組織を有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の表面被覆切削工具(1)。
- 前記第1被膜(10)は、2〜20μmの厚みを有し、前記第2被膜(11)は、0.5〜20μmの厚みを有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の表面被覆切削工具(1)。
- 前記第1被膜(10)は、さらに酸素を含有していることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表面被覆切削工具(1)。
- 前記第1被膜(10)は、さらに元素周期律表のIVa族元素、Va族元素、VIa族元素、Si、Y、BおよびSからなる群から選ばれる少なくとも1種の元素を含有していることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表面被覆切削工具(1)。
- 前記第2被膜(11)は、さらに元素周期律表のIVa族元素、Va族元素、VIa族元素、Si、Y、BおよびSからなる群から選ばれる少なくとも1種の元素を含有していることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表面被覆切削工具(1)。
