Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently couple a semiconductor laser and an optical waveguide, by constituting so that emission beams diffused in the upper and lower directions from the semiconductor laser are condensed by a cylindrical lens and are made incident to the end of the optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical lens 4 is fitted into a V-groove 2 formed on a supporting base 1 consisting of a silicon single crystal of surface bearing (100), a chip 5 having an optical waveguide 6 is placed on a stepped part 3, and a semiconductor laser chip 7 is provided on a metallic electrode film 11 insulated by an SiO2 film 9 of the supporting base 1, so as to be opposed to the chip 5 by placing the groove 2 between them. The beams diffused in the upper and lower direction, which are emitted from an active layer 8 of the semiconductor laser 7 are converged by the lens 4, and are made incident efficiently to the end of the optical waveguide.
