Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a coupler with effective beam focusing action by coupling a semicondutor laser with optical fiber with a lens interposed between the both.
CONSTITUTION: Lens element 2 is interposed between semiconductor laser 1 and optical fiber 3. Light incident surface 7 of lens element 2 should be a two-dimentional convex curved surface in a longitudinal plane (X-Z plane) perpendicular to junction surface 6 of semiconductor laser 1. Light emissive surface 8 should be a plane. The refractive index of lens element 2 is uneven and increases gradually from light incident surface 7 toward center P of light emissive surface 8. The refractive index will not vary in the direction (y direction) perpendicular to the longitudinal plane (X-Z plane).
