Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain high coupling efficiency to an optical fiber by decreasing deflection from a spherical lens formed in the case when installing an up-side-up. CONSTITUTION:A heat sink 5 is projected from an end surface of a luminous section 3 of a semiconductor laser, and a spherical lens 2 is placed on a projecting section 5a and glued to the luminous section 3. Projecting length L is made approximate equal to the thickness t of the laser 1 or slight larger than the thickness (t). A radius of the lens 2 is made approximate similar to the dimensions (t). If a diameter of the lens 2 is 150mum and (t) is 80mum, coupling efficiency does not lower remarkably because the deflection of beams projected is about 4 deg. and is smaller than an angle of light receiving of an optical fiber. When the projected beams of a small spot are required, the spherical lens may be formed in a small diameter and placed on a necessary pedestal, and an optical axis may be adjusted.
